Healthy Handbook: Kalamazoo

Page 1

Sindecuse Health Center presents

A decent guide for getting around, eating, and entertainment in Kalamazoo.

HELLO. If you’re holding this book, chances are you’re in (or have at least heard of) Kalamazoo. Others might have said it’s a(n) place, or you already think it’s . Whatever your opinion, we think it’s important to know a few things. We’re not telling you what to do or how to do it, but if you want to know more about getting around, where to eat well, or having fun while you’re here, you might want to have a look and decide for yourself. Although this is far from a complete directory or an encylopedic reference to living healthy, this handbook is at least authentic. It compiles reasonable information from people who have actually lived here, to help you have a decent experience yourself. We hope you find this useful or at least interesting.

research, design, & content Lauren Laheta creative direction, etc. Eric Howes

GEtTing TherE First things first. Assuming you know where you’re going, you need to decide how to get there. If you have a car, then you’ve got it easy; but we realize many first-year students don’t. Car or not, maybe you’re into alternative means of travel; because gas is too expensive or you are trying to “go green.” In any case, it’s a great idea to get to know your way around the city you’re living in.

GoOd Times A collection of things to do in Kalamazoo that don’t necessarily require drinking.

GOinG To Eat Instead of heading to the blasé chain restaurants you can find anyplace—you know, the predictable ones you’re ohso-comfortable with—we’ve provided a list of restaurants unique to Kalamazoo. First time on your own? This chapter can give you a few pointers about how to eat healthy, too.

Kal-Haven Trail State Park (269) 674-8011

Originally a railroad line connecting Kalamazoo and South Haven, the 33-mile Kal-Haven Trail is popular for bicycle riding, hiking and cross country skiing. In 2008, the eastern end of the trail was extended into Kalamazoo as part of the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail. When completed, the two trails will create a 70-mile bike path from Battle Creek to South Haven.

Kalamazoo River Valley Trail www.kalamazoorivervalleytrail.com

Currently, there are 14 miles complete of this nonmotorized, paved-asphalt trail. One stretch begins at 10th street, heading east from the Kal-Haven Caboose and streching 4.8 miles to Westnedge Avenue. You can also enjoy a section that connects Mayors’ Riverfront Park to D Ave., traveiling though Verburg Park, along Markin Glen County Park and Kalamazoo Nature Center. As funds and property become available the trail will continue to grow.

T.O.A.D. Bicyle Cooperative The T.O.A.D. bicycle collective of Kalamazoo meets every Wednesday 4PM–8PM at 817 Hoffman Ct. to work on bikes. Eating, Kalamazoo style

There are many terrific, unique options available. Why support local restaurants? When business owners and residents purchase goods and services from nearby sources, it benefits the local economy. Locally-owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and contributing to important causes close to home. More than providing jobs and convenient services, it makes a positive difference—right in our own backyard.
