James E. Gui Competition 2019 Aretha Franklin High School for the Performing Arts A performing arts high school situated in downtown Detroit. In an area of growth and urban revival the Aretha Franklin School for the Arts is surrounded by the architecture of Mies van der Rohe as well as two parks. The first being Lafayette park and the other, the very active Dequindre Cut. Once a railroad line the Dequindre Cut has been converted into a park featuring bike trails and running paths. The design for the high school arose from analysis of the site condition and the transportation systems shown in the map to the right. The resulting form has been carved by the various transportation methods that affect the site. The program of a performing arts high school is a dense one. This project faces the challenge of not only dealing with the hefty programmatic demands but also addressing the sense of urban renewal within Detroit.

The timeline to the left represents the student population that will attend the Aretha Franklin High School for the Arts. In order to more clearly understand and cope with the program requirements the student population has been abstracted into their disciplines. Each discipline is then studied and their path throughout the school measured in the form of a line graph. The “Standard School line is the basic school courses such as math, biology, and history, when the lines deviate from the standard it represents a student diving further into their chosen discipline. This study of how student’s measure against the standard line of schooling helps to clarify the organization of the program, delineating where there are common overlaps and where there needs to be clear distinctions. The in depth study of this timeline translates directly into the interior organization of program within the school. The arts studios become a wide open, multi-story space due to the large overlaps shown while the individual classrooms for standard schooling take the form of separated units along the interior.

Digital Bubble
Digital Bubble The blank social media experience explores the user relationship on the internet. Three relationships were define; celebrity, stalker, and mutual with a stalker. The user interacts with others in many different ways and can assume any of the previously listed roles. The ways in which these interactions happen has been abstracted and illustrated as digital bubbles interacting. These relationships are the digital form of the basic human experience. Relationships between people help to inform the design of both the digital and physical world. In the digital world distance is relative to the relationship versus physically you must be close to interact properly. Arch 3420 Spring 2018 Location Location After clicking on location a map will be brought up to provide your current location in the real world and online.

Celebrity For a user to become a celebrity they must meet certain requirements. They must like posts until their friend count reaches 10,000, at this point their friend number will rise rapidly along with their number of replies. The most noticeable change will be the interface. The color scheme switches to the “celebrity” scheme.

Gaining a Stalker
Stalker For a user to become a stalker they must click on the profile picture of a specfic person ten times. Once they do this the color scheme changes to the stalker scheme and the feed becomes focused on the one person they chose to 15285 12126545 stalk. They can only view, click, and scroll through that persons feed.
With Stalker For a user to gain a stalker they must press a secret floating button that will be located on the page. Once they have a stalker the user experience becomes glitchy and series of mousepressed functions begin to edit the page.

Social Media Machine The blank social media experience gets translated into a physical project. Each webpage abstracted in the blank social media project becomes a 3D modeled space with a form that reflects the function of each page. These 3D spaces become “Modules. Just as the user navigates and controls the blank social media experience the superstructure controls and helps the user navigate the modules. The superstructure is comparable to a claw machine that rotates and swivels to pick up and configure the modules into unique combinations. These combinations designate how the user moves through the physical version of the blank social media experience. ARCH 3420 Spring 2018

The materials used must be thicker to deal with the strains of the machine.
The end result of the machine is random combinations of spaces that emulate the virtual experience of moving through pages in social media.

Jesse Owen North Recreation Center Redesign
Re-design of the Jesse Owens North Recreation Center. Focus on designing, combining, and splitting primitive forms within a cube in order to create form. The primitives were used as base forms the removed from a cube, this cube was then subdivided to construct building and landscape. The design process investigated the relationship between rectified and figural forms especially the dichotomy created when they are combined. The final form explores the use of poche space more than open space due to the design and construction method. ARCH 3410 Fall 2017 Site: 2151 Neil Ave., Columbus, OH 43210

Double Dome Installation
Double Dome Study Space An exercise in full scale design and construction. Design a full scale installation study space within Knowlton that can be built using cardboard. The full scale installation relies on the precedent of the dome for its base design. As a group, the structure was modeled using grasshopper while the construction spanned over three days. This installation explored the process of construction method at the human scale. ARCH 2420 Spring 2016 Site: The Knowlton School

High Density Drawing Seminar This seminar studied the history of drawing both handmade and digital. Over the course of the semester each student created a catalogue of drawn objects that reflect their personal style. These items included scale figures, trees, plants, cars, furniture, and hatches. This catalogue was then used to create a series of highly dense drawings. The culmination of the seminar is a full scale drawing of the Ohio State campus. The map is pulled from the university archives and each student recreated a section using their personal drawing catalogue. These drawings were then printed on tapestries, sewn together, and hung in the main space of the Knowlton School. ARCH 5920 Spring 2018
