LM PORTFOLIO
Introduction This is a book of explorations - poetic ideas articulated in the form of architecture and design. Varying in scale and complexity, these stories express my journey spanning five years of design education. These pages hold a series of adventures, each chapter inscribed with inquiry and discussion of architectural issues. Their purpose is to trace the process of my eyes, mind, and hands as I investigate spatial, socio-cultural, and environmental relationships. Inside this book, I hope you will find hope, curiosity, love, happiness, will and desire, brokenness and openness, and in the end, a peek into the architectural values that I hold dear.

Pinch Point Graduate Advanced Studio Professor Coleman Coker Design Excellence Award Spring 2013
The poetics of building studio challenges designers to think three dimensionally, consider the complexity of natural systems, and create meaningful architecture. Every moment is measured through the senses, rooting the project in human experience. Located in Port Aransas, Texas, the gulf coast provides ecological intricacy, emphasizing the impact of human intervention. Immediately adjacent to the site lies the deep water, Corpus Christi Ship Channel, a trade connection to the intracoastal waterway. Cutting through prairie and marsh land, the barrier island ecology of Port Aransas is constantly threatened by exposure to human activity. Designed as an educational intervention for the University of Texas, Marine Science institute, Pinch Point conceptually expresses the tension between human and natural ecology. The structure acts as a threshold, drawing each visitor’s attention toward the constructed wetlands, where there are individual seats provided for contemplation and observation.

flatbed press Graduate Vertical Studio Professor Joyce Rosner Spring 2012
The site for the new Flatbed Press studio sits in an area undergoing rapid gentrification. Historically, the neighborhoods adjacent to Martin Luther King Boulevard have been low income and rich in diversity. As Austin, TX continues to grow, the unique character formerly found in East Austin is diminishing. Blight ravages the neighborhood as long-time tenants abandon their homes as their community changes around them. Inspired by the printmaking process, the new studio space provides areas for community activity and professional practice. The central courtyard acts as a neighborhood avenue, drawing the community in while providing private, professional studio space. The porch atmosphere inspires creativity and welcome, providing a civic space and encouraging resident ownership. In addition to professional studio space, flatbed press houses gallery space for exhibition and community classes. The courtyard is also designed to accommodate an artist market and community garden plots. In order to preserve the existing character of the neighborhood and encourage civic engagement between new and old residents, Flatbed Press will act as a community avenue.

Town hall school Undergraduate Advanced Studio Professor David Matthews Fall 2010
Saynatsalo Town Hall School is nestled in a community consisting of three islands in the Lake Paijanne area of Jyvaskyla, Finland. There is a deep connection between the three islands and the dense forests that cover the area. These natural surroundings are the perfect atmosphere for children, as they learn to appreciate nature and utilize the environment to gain understanding of many subjects as well as life skills. The students of Saynatsalo Town Hall School have the opportunity to take advantage of local resources in museums, university facilities, sporting complexes, and other community assets. The curricullum of Saynatsalo Town Hall School is designed around the principles of student-centered learning and multiple intelligence theory. Understanding cognitive development and current educational research became critical in developing the spatial relationships and experiential opportunities created for the school. The original Town Hall was designed by Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, and was conceived with a surrounding complex of buildings. Sayanatsalo Town Hall School proposes that Aalto’s original Town Hall be adaptively reused as an educational facility and community center.

brim
Graduate Wood Design Professor Mark Macek Fall 2013
Brim may be derived from the brim of a hat, tipped in greeting; a full cup, brimming with joy; or denoting the edge or precipice of the dining surface. Each circumstance relates to the experience of dining in friendship, joy, and anticipation. Designed for a breakfast room, the elliptical shape allows for ease of circulation around the table in a small space. The shape also seats diners shoulder-to-shoulder in a casual stance, making for an informal dining atmosphere. Simplicity is considered in each detail, expressing joints to identify points of structural tension, and rounding edges to compliment the overall design strategy. Working through the craftsmanship risk and the craftsmanship of certainty, Brim came about as an exploration of hand and machine craft. Flowing between sketches, mock-ups, and final cuts, hand tools provided more risk than machines requiring calculation, certainty, and skill. Overall, the method of making is inspired by the design concept - a casual table for gathering with friends.

Greenhouse Studios Graduate Technical Communication Studio Professor Burton Baldridge Spring 2014
Greenhouse Studios is located in East Austin adjacent to multiple transit hubs. To the North, rapid gentrification presses in upon the site as mid-rise housing marches its way South. Austin’s festival culture and alternative atmosphere are a draw for musicians, filmmakers and artists, creating a transient culture in contrast with Austin’s “local’s only” reputation. Greenhouse Studios will provide the resources necessary for the creative pursuits of both visiting and local film studios. With rentable soundstages, residences, and editting suites, Greenhouse Studios will provide a private, collaborative environment for actors, filmmakers, and artists. In order produce an enjoyable work environment, gardens and light are inserted as the core of the project. As the garden grows, the film production black boxes erode, generating overlapping zones of open space. Stitched between the black boxes, a shade structure covers the central garden, providing shelter from the Austin sun. A stimulating interchange between work and leisure is created using contrasting elements.

Nest
University of Tennessee Botanical Gardens Treehouse Competition Sanders Pace Architecture First Place Award Summer 2013
NEST establishes a framework for open ended discovery and exploration within the planned Children’s Garden Area. Our proposal supports the “Elements of Nature” theme planned for the new Children’s Garden by creating spaces with physical and experiential aspects inspired by the natural environment and geography of East Tennessee. The program brief asks for proposals to respond with an accessible solution within a limited budget. NEST creates opportunity from these constraints and provides a direct response to the challenge offered in the brief. Working within the given parameters, NEST is composed of three clearly defined components: landscape, wall, and shelter.
