SPRING/ SUMMER 14 SECRET COLONIES For Spring Summer 14 Casely-Hayford takes inspiration from “the secret colonies” of British Skateboarders and graffiti artists who, since the 1970’s have occupied the Southbank; the birthplace of British Skateboarding. Recently these knights of the pavements have been engaged in serious combat; in a clash between counter-culture and commercialism, as this cherished concrete enclave risks being turned into another stretch of bland chain stores and coffee shops. This season Casely-Hayford look at the cultural richness and energy this small corner has brought to London and the UK; Skateboarders were the first real constituents of modernist urban design. The SS14 silhouette is relaxed and oversized with suggestions of multi layering ultra light weight garments. The signature ‘Hensley’ Dashiki/Dhobi suggests a fusion between a sporty blouson Dashiki and Dhobi coat, creating an exciting new shape. This mood is echoed throughout the collection by fusing disparate elements from the skate world. Fabrics combine super light technical materials with new techno-crafted prints and finishes. Japanese indigo dyed embroidered Denim is paired with strong British sportswear influences. SS14 is a study in the skate culture and its characters, delving into how skateboarding was transported from California to England over 40 years ago. References such as Dustinn Craig’s amazing photos of the white mountain Apache Skateboarders or Ferris Plock’s Samurai skater illustrations highlight how other atypical cultures have integrated ‘secret colonies’ into their own society. These disparate strands build a rich picture of contrasting sources all brought together and reinterpreted through the Casely-Hayford handwriting for their Spring/ Summer 14 collection.
