Ask Eddie: What is the Downtown Heroes Award that HDR announced at the annual Celebration & Reception on February 23? Each year, at our Celebration & Reception, HDR recognizes many of the key people and organizations that have completed outstanding projects or contributed significantly to downtown revitalization. These awards include Design Excellence Awards, Volunteer of the Year Awards, and Partner Organization of the Year Awards. This year, for the first time, two people who are unmatched in their dedication to and investment in downtown were recognized with the Downtown Heroes Award. Barry Kelley serves on HDR’s Advisory Board and on the Plan Our Park Committee. Andrew Forward is a member of the HDR Board and is chair of our Economic Development Committee. Game changing development projects they have partnered on include the City Exchange, Urban Exchange, and Ice House.

In addition to the above projects, Barry has purchased and restored The Livery, Bruce Street, Walton Hotel, Matchbox Realty, and Campbell Court. A future mixed-use renovation project will be the Hess Furniture Building. Collectively, these projects represent tens of millions of dollars in private investment. The projects have provided opportunities for multiple new and existing businesses, created jobs and downtown housing, and preserved historic buildings with character and architectural charm. Their commitment through volunteer time and financial resources to downtown revitalization has made an extremely significant and long-term impact. HDR offers a special thank you to Andrew and Barry for truly being “downtown heroes.”
