MUSEUM OF ANCIENT LIFE In 1855, the Illinois Central Railroad laid its tracks west of Urbana, and a new city, West Urbana, later renamed Champaign, was established. Today, the downtown and residential areas continue to expand, resulting in a redevelopment of previously predominately industrial regions. The introduction of the museum, will continue to draw its inhabitants to an emerging public area. The concept of the project lies within the material properties. As the patron moves through the museum, he passes through areas of heavily diffused light, signifying the lack or gain of knowledge in the present day. The areas of dark - with backlit displays, signifies the journey into the past, seeing life’s complexities as they were, before the patron comes to know them again in present context.

The enclosure system is comprised of a polycarbonate wall filled with Lumira aerogel. The characteristics of each component allows for energy saving. The wall is impact resistant, UV protected, and its sheets are connected by v-joints. The gel is porous, minimizes both heat transfer and sound transmission, as well as repels moisture, is UV stable, non-combustible, and diffuses light excellently.

ENERGY SCIENCE BUILDING Under the guidance of Chicago firm HDR Architecture, who simulated the client consulting, my team designed a new Energy Sciences Building for the Argonne National Laboratory campus, in Lemont, Illinois. The site for the new Energy Science Building is located near the main entrance of the campus and serves as a state-of-the-art gateway for Argonne National Laboratory. Due to its location, differing site traffic characterizes various parts of the site. Vehicular traffic circulates north of the building while pedestrian traffic circulates primarily southwest. Thus the building faces the main entrance while pathways direct pedestrian traffic.

15

16

The most emphasized goal of the project is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration locally and internationally, to encourage researchers from different backgrounds to converse with one another in hopes of developing new innovations.

MUSICIANS’ RESIDENCE Set in the 18th arrondisement of Paris, the Musician’s Residence accommodates traveling musicians and their families, providing a facility for the contemplation and celebration of music in through both practice and performance. While there is clear separation between the living quarters and the practice/performance quarters, the entire building is encased in a breathing skin - the balconies breathe, the interior courtyards breathe, the double skin facade also breathes. As air is important to transmit wavelengths of varying frequencies, the breathable building transmits its medium. The environment inside the building is very open, save for the private living quarters due to double glass walls; the idea is to encourage inhabitants to learn from each other. Additionally, as the levels build up, the rooms become larger and more performance oriented.

CENTRE VIA - GALERIE As a small gallery space situated in a dense residential context, Centre Via needed to be set apart from its surroundings while at the same time connected to the small adjacent pubic garden space. In order to achieve a transition, from the dense residential space, to one with an ambience both open and natural, contrasting materials were used. The visitor steps through the black brick facade to an interior of birch wood floors, temporary and permanent white walls, and a now glass walls, which face the adjacent garden. In addition to the open north facade, both the stairs and elevator are encased in glass. Except for the office space, public bathrooms and storage space, views are uninterrupted from one side of the gallery to the other.

33

34

The entrance plays a crucial role in the transition. To make it more inviting, the gallery was offset towards the garden and a cantilever was incorporated into the exhibition spaces which not only regains space compromised by the initial offset but which also brings the gallery closer to the natural environment provided by the garden.

35

The folds of the gallery reflect the initial space created by the adjacent buildings and overall site.

The walls, which make up the southern façade, converge at the physical entrance of the gallery. The visitor’s eye is drawn to this point no mater from which street they enter the entranceway.

Once inside, there is no more brick, only light and open space. The floors are of birch wood while the permanent and temporary walls are white partitions. The sides and back facade, which faces the garden, are entirely of glass. In addition to the open facade, both the stairs and elevator are encased in glass. Except for the office space, public bathrooms and storage space, views are uninterupted from one side of the gallery to its other. The transition is complete. NORTHWEST VIEW SHOWING CAFE

FOUQUETS - SOCIALBOX With the Occupy movement in mind, our team focused on transportable food preparation and consumption for an urban environment. Drawing inspiration from transient street vendors and the compactness of an Alan Wexler design, we devised a single unit that is mobile, efficient and compact. Each unit contains four individual compartments serving the basic needs of kitchens - heat, cold, storage, and wash. In addition there are chairs and a hinged table. During transportation four bands wrap around and secure the separate compartments onto a trailer and these same bands, once stood upright, may be lengthened and widened to support a plastic roof covering the cook’s and diners’ heads.

HOUSE TO STREET Given a doubled 2x3 set of 10’x10’ cubes, two shifts in mass were allowed on a sloped site for a single living unit. The vertical shift in mass, programmed spaces, as well as use of materials protect the privacy of a single inhabitant who has control with both solitary and social agendas. Dark wood panels, windows with a high offset, limited circulation and shallow view ranges denote private spaces; protruding concrete walls, windows without an exaggerated offset, a high density of circulation, and a variety of elongated views denote public spaces.

BRIDGES OF CAUSE Our team partnered with two different organizations during the semester to work on two different projects. The Bridge to China Foundation (BTC) is a charitable nonprofit organization based in Hong Kong dedicated to improving connections from rural villages to larger communities. Research into various long span suspension designs allowed us to submit a preliminary steel/wood hybrid solution report.

AWOZHU STEEL /WOOD HYBRID BRIDGE 51

Allerton Park, owned by The University of Illinois, consists of a mansion, a forest, and European Style gardens. A walkway was designed to span a creek, linking a future bike path to the park. The original intent was to use a suspended bridge design as a means to gain technical experience; however a more aesthetically appropriate design was used to gain experience with construction processes instead.
