WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial space, according to Le Corbusier is not interactive at all, in the sense that they can only be ‘viewed from a distance’. As pictorial drawings are not measured, forever they can only be viewed front on, an issue that comes to light in real life such as stage sets.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) Le Corbusier never used black in terms of shadows and silhouettes like many other artists of the time. This takes away from the sense of depth and three-dimensionality. Instead, he would add white led and used depth as a way of demonstrating texture.

MARIO’S WORLD

3

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

This drawing was only completed after multiple attepmts and even still has some technical issues, such as angles of lines, that had to be fixed when drawing the two worlds together. The top of the trees lack consistency in this drawing, the curves being very irregular, but the drawing overall was clear enough to move on to the next stage.

4

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

Though it has improved significantly from the first world drawing, the tops of the trees are still fairly innconsistent. The base of the drawing is rather large and takes away from the worlds on top, so I decided to reduce the size in illustrator.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial drawings are taken from a vanishing point, making them less accurate and as a result ‘limits space’. In contrast, projection drawings are exact and allow us to see things we may not have in real life. This reading argues that pictorial drawings/paintings only show us what we can already see with the naked eye and as a result are not as useful and forward thinking.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projections originate ‘in ancient visual practices’, often used in a military frame of context. The first axonometric drawing depicts ‘trajectories of artillery projectiles’. The teachings of axonometric drawings date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, appearing in many engineering classes and is still used today in an industrial and architectural design context.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

Though the base was shortened significantly from the drawings, it is still rather bulky and would maybe be improved if it were broken up with some colour. I tried roughening up the lines of the mountains to reflect the ones in the original world, but it looked messy and left lots of white spaces. Instead, some texture maybe should have been added to give it more detail and create more contrast. I added one tube, two trees, some coins and some bricks into the middle of my drawing to fill in some empty space. I had planned to add more but found that most could not be seen and that it made the projection look messy and overfilled.

APPENDIX

First attempt at axonometric drawing done wrong - started with objects in the foreground first making it confusing

Both world drawings put together in preparation for the final drawing. Drawings were done in stages so some pencil lines are visible from last phase.

New attempt at first world drawing, now starting with objects closest to the back.

Experimented a bit in Illustrator, though much did not feature in the final such as this cloud. I chose not to keep this as it distorted and obscured many of the objects within the world. 9
