FISCAL YEAR 2014
Annual Report GIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN OKLAHOMA
Our mission:
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We began our work in 2014 with a focus of relevance, for girls, for volunteers, and for future generations. In April 2014, at the annual Juliette Low Leadership Society Luncheon, we announced the public phase of our capital campaign to include a new leadership center and improvements to Camps Tallchief and Swannie. As we move toward creating a new leadership center, we are incorporating the traditional elements which tie generations of Girl Scouts together while at the same time designing a structure to meet the needs of future generations of girls. Our volunteers are the foundation of Girl Scouts and it is their continued mentorship and involvement with girls that make a difference. Each year, we provide scholarships to graduating Girl Scouts; eleven scholarships were awarded in 2014. Without fail, their applications speak to the influence of their troop leaders who set examples for them in both words and deeds. Another common theme reflects the sense of confidence that these girls have gained, they truly believe that they can go anywhere and do anything, as a result their Girl Scout experiences. To be relevant in an environment where girls have so many competing demands, we provide programs and experiences girls cannot receive anywhere else, especially when combined with the mentorship of a troop leader and the support of a single-gender environment. The critical area of STEM is an example where girls as early as 5th grade, become hesitant to demonstrate their interests and abilities in these fields. We held our inaugural Cookie Construction event where girls made structures from Girl Scout cookie boxes, of course! The theme was the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. For both Cookie Construction and Robotics, girls were partnered with women who are architectural and engineering professionals, giving girls the opportunity to learn that with STEM there are many paths to choose. Our Brownie robotics troop, the Lego Queens, were invited to present their project of a flood-proof bridge at the White House Science Fair, where they met President Obama. To use their words, “girls can like science and girly things too”. As part of our three-year Live Healthy Lead Healthy initiative, girls participated in the Girl Scout Olympics and in the Thin Mint Sprint. Both events launched in 2014 and reached more than 1,200 girls combined. Most importantly, we saw the impact of this initiative on girls and their families, empowering the girls in their own environments to make smarter choices and to stay active. Some troops even started to pursue 5K challenges!

Tailored to our older girls, we started a new series, “Thinking Outside of the Cookie Box,” where professionals spoke to girls about topics that aligned with the 5 skills of the Financial Literacy Program. Like miniature TED talks, these conversations transferred skills such as goal-setting in cookie sales to goalsetting in a business environment. The translation of the 5 skills to real world applications illustrated the importance of the girls’ experiences. Finally, for 2014, we want to recognize Girl Scouts Beyond Bars. Driven by the statistics of our state, our needs are extreme. Through proven Girl Scout programs, we continue to make a difference, offering mothers and daughters a way to stay connected and to provide girls tools to help overcome the trauma of having an incarcerated parent.

GSBB
Girl Scouts Beyond Bars: serving almost 700 girls by reconnecting children with incarcerated mothers and by bringing proven Girl Scout curriculum to both mothers and daughters, we are breaking the cycle of intergenerational incarceration.
2014 was our inaugural year for Cookie Construction. With support from professionals in the fields of Architecture and Engineering, Girl Scout teams created sculptural designs, with an Olympics theme, to celebrate the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi.
Live Healthy Lead Healthy
Through our three year Live Healthy, Lead Healthy initiative, girls are actively engaged to pursue a variety of activities, to make healthy food choices and to focus on positive self-image and social well-being.

Designed with our girls in mind
Our original building was built in the late 1960s when our membership was only approximately 3,000 girls. As our membership grew, the need for an expanded facility grew as well. We added on to our current building in 1997 and our membership has grown to over 10,000 girls and 2,200 volunteers. In April 2014, we were pleased to announce the public phase of our capital campaign for the new Hardesty Leadership Center. Starting with the green sash on the facade, the bridges throughout the interior and finally the firepit in the back, the girls will be front and center. We were able to celebrate our groundbreaking October 7, 2014. With the support of our generous philanthropic community, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma is thrilled to be able to have a facility that embodies both the traditions and future of our organization.
