April 15 marks a historic date for the city of Shanghai. It will be the very first time the Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony is held in China. This commemorative edition of the Laureus Magazine will, we hope, provide a taste of the excitement ahead as the clock ticks down to this internationally renowned sports event. The Laureus Awards coming to Shanghai has a very personal meaning for me. It was just a few weeks ago that I became a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, a unique collection of sports legends who are committed to using the power of sport to help young people all over the world.
4月15日将成为上海市一个具历史意义的日子，因为这是劳伦 斯世界体育奖颁奖典礼第一次在中国举行。 在这个世界著名的体育盛会即将开幕之际，我们期望此次的劳 伦斯颁奖礼特辑能够提前营造出激动人心的氛围。 劳伦斯世界体育奖颁奖礼典礼将来到上海，这对我来说有着非 常重要的个人意义。就在几个星期以前，我成为了劳伦斯世界 体育学会的一员，而学会中有很多成员都是体坛的传奇人物， 他们在借助体育的力量帮助全世界的年轻人。 因此，你们就能理解我为什么会为第16届劳伦斯世界体育奖 能在我所居住的上海举办而感到特别开心了。
So you will understand why I am especially happy that the 16th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards is to be held in Shanghai, the city where I now live. The Awards Ceremony, which will be attended by many of the greatest living sportsmen and women, is the premier honours event in the international sporting calendar, but it also generates funds which directly benefit the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

Some thirty years ago, whilst living in New York City, I had a black friend who was a true sports superstar. He was constantly mobbed for autographs. I noticed that he took extra care giving signed posters to white kids. I asked him about the apparent favouritism. His answer: “Johann, if a white kid has my poster in his bedroom, he can hardly discriminate against the black kid in his class.” How true. Ever since then we have strived to create and promote crosscultural heroes. In South Africa we helped start Institutes and Sports Academies to promote sporting excellence. As a South African I have also witnessed first hand the profound role that sport can play in nation-building and reconciliation. When democratic South Africa was accepted into international sport over a decade ago, many believed it would take years for us to be integrated. Since then we have confounded the critics, won major championships and hosted others. It is this same belief that led me to propose that Richemont help found Laureus and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation believes that sport can change the way people look at the world. The true values of sport can bring together families, friends, nations – and on occasions, the whole world – in a way that no other human activity can.

Laureus’ passion is based on a simple truth: whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever your background, sport can give you the chance to be a better person tomorrow than you are today. In a world of increasing tension between cultures and religions, we believe that sporting heroes can bridge the gap that other leaders of society are either unable or unwilling to do. We believe that sport can help change the world. Sport represents the best of humanity: determination, fellowship, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence. This is a powerful message – one which I hope I can count on you for your support, playing your part to help change the world.

WE BELIEVE IN SPORT FOR GOOD 我们相信体育的力量
Laureus Sport for Good was founded back in 1999 by Daimler and Richemont. The goal was simple: helping children and young people master social challenges. Back then nobody knew that a major movement would develop in the 16 years to come. Through those years Laureus’ vision never faded – “Sport has the power to change the world”. Laureus lived up to these words, spoken by Nelson Mandela in his unforgettable speech at the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000. Moreover, Laureus Sport for Good continues to live these words each and every day. Now with more than 150 projects in 34 countries, Laureus has helped millions of disadvantaged children and young people since its inception. The power of sport provides mentoring, coaching and education in some of the most deprived environments around the world. Mandela’s speech didn’t end with that powerful sentence. He went on to say that sport also has the power to inspire. Sport speaks in a language everyone is able to understand, regardless of gender, race or cultural background. And becoming part of the Laureus movement is about spreading that inspiration all over the world. More than 200 Laureus Academy Members and Ambassadors donate their precious time to support Laureus Sport for Good, to act as motivators and role models for kids who take part in Laureus projects. Last but not least, Mandela reminded us that sport can create hope where there once may have only been resentment or capitulation – hope for a better life and for achieving one’s goals. This is what we work for: giving hope to children and young people all over the world, providing them the support they need to overcome social challenges and inspiring them to live their lives to the fullest.

We are very proud to be part of the Laureus movement and to support Laureus Sport for Good as it grows to reach more young people worldwide. In February 2015, Mercedes-Benz USA joined the Partnership for a Healthier America and committed to doing its part to reduce obesity in the U.S. in a generation. To drive this change, MBUSA provided a $10.5 million grant to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA. We next look forward to announcing a new development regarding our commitment in China. Laureus Sport for Good – thanks for the outstanding work done over the past 16 years. Let’s all work together to further contribute to the Laureus movement in the years to come!

When night falls, the lights of the Shanghai Grand Theatre create a dazzling vista across People’s Square. Since it opened in August 1998, the theatre, which is the home of the Shanghai Opera House Company, has staged over 6,000 performances of operas, musicals, ballets, symphonies and theatrical plays. In April it will be the proud home for a new event in its international repertoire – the 16th annual Laureus World Sports Awards, being staged in China for the first time and able to be enjoyed by millions of TV viewers from around the world.

GABRIEL MEDINA – LAUREUS WORLD ACTION SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR 2015 NOMINEE 加布里埃尔·梅迪纳 – 2015年劳伦斯年度最佳极限运动员奖提名人
Where else could you get the ultimate football fixture: the German World Cup winning team v Real Madrid, ten-time winners of the Champions League? Only at the Laureus World Sports Awards, where the two giants have both been nominated by the world’s media for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award. And there are fascinating contests everywhere. Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who was beaten last year by Sebastian Vettel for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award, faces UK pair Lewis Hamilton and Rory McIlroy and tennis world No.1 Novak Djokovic. The impact of the FIFA World Cup is also felt in the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year category where Germany’s Mario Götze, who scored the winning goal in the final, and Colombia’s James Rodriguez, winner of the Golden Boot as leading scorer, are both nominated. Serena Williams, nominated for Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, will be hoping for her record-equalling fourth Laureus Award, but she is challenged by the emotional appeal of China’s Li Na, who won her second Grand Slam in 2014 but had to retire later in the year. And can four-time winner Roger Federer add another Laureus Statuette to his collection? He has two chances, being nominated as part of the Swiss Davis Cup team for Team of the Year and Breakthrough of the Year. The winners are chosen in a secret ballot by the 50 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. The results are announced on April 15, in Shanghai, China.

Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton knows he has plenty of competition for the 2015 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award, including major sports stars Novak Djokovic, Rory McIlroy and Cristiano Ronaldo. “Rory’s done an amazing job. Ronaldo, what a great player he is. Djokovic, I mean he’s killed everything,” said Hamilton, who won 11 Grand Prix last year on the way to his second world title. Hamilton, who won the Laureus Breakthrough Award in 2008, said: “I’ve never won the big Award at Laureus and obviously seen the greats that have. I would be massively privileged if I was amongst those. Knowing how prestigious the Laureus Award is I feel very, very grateful and proud to be amongst the great athletes that have been nominated.”

Retired Chinese Tennis superstar Li Na is up against her former on-court rival Serena Williams as she attempts to win the Sportswoman of the Year Award at the Laureus World Sports Awards in her native country on April 15. Mario Götze, who will forever be known as the man who won the 2014 World Cup after scoring the winning goal in the final, believes the Germany team is poised for even more success in the future. Götze, at 22, was the youngest goalscorer in a World Cup final since 1966 – a feat which won him a Nomination for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. Götze said: “For me as a young football player it is a great honour to be amongst the other Nominees and great sportsmen. The Laureus Award is known worldwide and a significant prize. Since there are so many great sports people in the jury I really admire, it would of course be phenomenal to win, but let’s wait and see.”

It was March 2003 and Edwin Moses led nine of the world’s greatest sports legends on a visit to the Lujiazui School in Shanghai, the very first project in China supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The school had been established by Special Olympics, the world’s largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, and its Unified Sports Programme placed individuals with and without disabilities in the same teams for training and friendly competition to break down social barriers.

Laureus Academy Members Sebastian Coe, Nadia Comaneci, Deng Yaping, Kapil Dev, Michael Johnson, Franz Klammer, Robby Naish and Daley Thompson were in the group, sharing an unforgettable moment with the children, their families and their teachers. Laureus Chairman Edwin Moses said at the time: “Our work in China is only just beginning. As we move forward, we look ahead to building more relationships and creating a framework that will allow us to pass on our message that sport has the power to change the world.” Laureus has continued to support Special Olympics in China, and in October last year one of the world’s greatest gymnasts, Li Xiaopeng, became a Laureus Ambassador and joined fellow gymnast and Laureus Academy Member Alexey Nemov on a visit to the Pudong Special Education School in Shanghai. Li Xiaopeng said: “Our visit was really emotional, and I’m sure it meant a lot to the children that we were able to go and meet them. It certainly meant a lot to me. This is so exciting and so rewarding for me to see Laureus committed to a wonderful project like this.”

During their visit, Li Xiaopeng and Alexey Nemov took part in classroom lessons and shared games time with the pupils. Under the Special Olympics slogan of ‘I think I can’, the school carries forward the spirit of Special Olympics and runs a wide variety of sports including gymnastics, basketball, football, table tennis, golf, bowling and hockey, all with the support of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

Another legendary Chinese athlete who has taken part in a Laureus visit is Liu Xiang, who won the Olympic 110 metres hurdles gold medal in 2004 and also the Laureus World Newcomer of the Year Award the following year. Liu Xiang last year joined Edwin Moses and Alexey Nemov on a visit to Gezhi High School in Shanghai where the three Olympic legends gave the students a physical education lesson they will never forget.

Gezhi High School was established in 1874 and is one of the first ‘experimental model high schools’ of Shanghai, where Western scientific knowledge was first taught. The school provides basketball, badminton, billiards, table tennis, yoga, fencing and shooting courses for its students. Liu Xiang said: “I hope we were able to inspire them and encourage them to have their dreams. I tried to tell them if you work hard enough, you can achieve anything.” There have been other significant Laureus milestones along the way. In 2006 Hong Kong’s most famous film star Jackie Chan joined Academy Members Edwin Moses, Mark Spitz and Morné Du Plessis at the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens to publicise the work of Laureus.

Operation Breakthrough uses a variety of sports as the means to engage young people and help fight crime and juvenile delinquency in low-income and immigrant communities.

One of those sports is boxing, and almost exactly nine years later, in 2015, Moses returned to Hong Kong, this time with Marvelous Marvin Hagler, one of the greatest boxers to climb into the ring, who was guest of honour at an Operation Breakthrough fund-raising boxing event. Academy Member Hagler, who won 52 of his 67 fights by knockout and only lost three times in his career, visited Operation Breakthrough earlier in the day to see the project in action. He said: “It was a great pleasure to be here to visit the young people at the project and share my experiences and passion about boxing as well as some skills with them. It is great to see that boxing is helping young people to change their lives.”

MBUSA’s support has helped Laureus USA impact over 140,000 kids in 30 cities to date. The motif is based on the winning entry submitted for the 2014 drawing competition traditionally organised by IWC within all the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects worldwide. The subject, “Time to celebrate”, encouraged many children and adolescents from all over the world to submit entries. The jury selected the drawing by 13-year-old Nakayenga Zahara from Nakulabye in Uganda. Her picture shows a group of happy cheerleaders with pom-poms celebrating a goal. The engraving is a reminder that some of the sales proceeds are destined to help Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects in some of the world’s crisis regions.

To contribute to the Laureus Foundation Switzerland, founded in 2007 by IWC Schaffhausen and Mercedes-Benz Schweiz, IWC again donated a precious watch to the annual Charity Night’s auction. The unique Pilot Watch Perpetual Calendar went under the hammer for CHF 85,000 when internationally renowned sports stars teamed up in Zurich for the eighth Laureus Charity Night, which raised a record sum of CHF 652,000 as a whole. Many projects, such as the Laureus Cavallo project, will benefit from the funds. This venture makes dreams come true for socially disadvantaged children who would like to work with animals and participate in the often privileged sport of horse riding. The caring environment and emotional attachment to the horses instils a sense of responsibility in the children, as well as teaching patience and assertiveness.

And no fewer than five giants of sport have agreed to become Laureus Ambassadors and lend their powerful support to Russian’s football coach Fabio Capello; Spain and FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué; South African rugby captain Jean de Villiers; BMX maestro and Laureus Award winner Jamie Bestwick; and Bob Lujano, the massively admired US wheelchair rugby star. Laureus World Sports Academy Members and Ambassadors volunteer their time to support the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation which fights a wide range of social problems affecting young people today. But more than that, they are role models who help to provide the inspiration which young people need.

Tegla Loroupe, the first African woman to win the New York Marathon and an activist in the field of peace and women’s rights, became the 48th member of the Laureus Academy in February. She was followed shortly afterwards by legendary speed skater and respected International Olympic Committee member Yang Yang and Chinese Olympic gymnast Li Xiaopeng, who are now the 49th and 50th members.

Olympic legend Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, inducted Yang Yang and Li Xiaopeng in a special ceremony at the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. Also present at the announcement was Fabio Capello, one of football’s greatest coaches, who had previously been named a Laureus Ambassador.

Capello, who coached club sides AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus and national teams England and Russia, has long been an enthusiastic supporter of Laureus. In 2010, as manager of England, he invited children from two Laureus projects in South Africa to attend a practice match during the FIFA World Cup there. Another legendary footballer, Gerard Piqué, also became an Ambassador in 2015. Piqué has played for FC Barcelona since 2008, and was a key member of the highly successful Spanish national team which won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship two years later. He said: “I believe in the importance of helping the most disadvantaged people through sport, especially youth and children; this is one of the characteristics that we, sports people, share and also something that FC Barcelona has instilled into us since we were kids.”

One of the most respected and popular players in world rugby, Jean de Villiers, enjoyed an extra special 34th birthday celebration in Cape Town in February when he was named as a Laureus Ambassador. An inspirational leader both on and off the field, the South African rugby captain is now on the road back to fitness after a knee injury and is targeting his return for the Rugby World Cup in September. Sean Fitzpatrick, Vice Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, who captained the All Blacks 51 times, said: “Jean has done a fantastic job as captain of the Springboks and throughout has remained a caring person who believes that top sportsmen and women can help change and shape the lives of the less privileged.”

Two US-based sports stars have partnered with Laureus: Jamie Bestwick, one of the most successful BMX riders of all time, with nine straight X Games gold medals, and US Paralympic athlete and quad rugby national champion Bob Lujano. Bestwick won the 2014 Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award after his X Games feats, while Lujano has been an inspiration to disabled athletes. “Becoming a Laureus Ambassador gives me the opportunity to help promote inclusive sport and play for children everywhere, which is something I am very passionate about,” said Lujano.

From the snow of the Alps, via a sun-bleached football ground in Sydney to the back streets of Belfast, over the last few months children and young people from different continents have all been benefiting from being part of the Laureus Family. Participants from ten of the 13 Laureus Sport for Good projects in Germany and Austria travelled to the famous ski region of Semmering in Austria, where the project Snow Tiger, which enables children with disabilities to have access to winter sports, was the host of the annual Laureus Youth Camp. Many of the 69 taking part were making their first steps on snow and after a couple of days they were able to compete in a friendly race, which was an achievement for all of them. During the camp they were joined by Laureus Ambassadors and world class skiers Felix Gottwald, Christa Kinshofer and Martin Braxenthaler.

More than 8,000 kilometres south, with the temperature almost 30 degrees higher, just days before Christmas, the Laureus Youth Empowerment through Sport (YES) programme concluded its latest course with celebrations in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Laureus Ambassadors joined 30 graduates who had successfully completed the programme aimed at empowering and inspiring youth leaders from sports organisations across South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Ghana. Successful graduates learn technical, vocational and life skills needed to develop their communities.
