About Her Justice Her Justice engages the talent and resources of New York City’s law firms, bringing together committed lawyers and determined women to secure life-changing results.
Women in crisis can’t wait At Her Justice, we believe that all women with urgent safety and financial needs deserve legal representation. Legal services agencies in our city turn away 8 out of 9 people who come to them for help. They simply cannot hire enough lawyers to meet the overwhelming need. As a result, most low-income women go to family and immigration court alone, without a lawyer, and often lose cases they could win—crucial cases that would free them and their children from abuse and give them additional income to support their families and the legal right to remain in this country and not be separated from their children.
Transforming lives A dozen lawyers on our staff focus their time on recruiting, training and mentoring volunteer attorneys rather than going to court with clients themselves. They convince thousands of volunteer attorneys and other professionals to take on difficult and complex cases in family, divorce and immigration law, standing side-by-side with women who cannot afford to pay for a lawyer. Together, we give determined and courageous survivors—women who once felt powerless—the ability to take back control from their abusers, improve their children’s lives and build a stronger community for us all.
Who we serve Our clients reside in all five boroughs of New York City: • 31% live in the Bronx, the City’s poorest borough and the poorest urban county in the U.S. • 30% live in Queens, the borough with the highest concentration of immigrants • 52% are Latina, 25% are African-American and 14% are Asian or a member of another minority group ACCREDITED CHARITY
• 1 out of every 4 women we serve cannot access the legal system ®
ny.give.org
without an interpreter • 85% of our clients are victims of domestic violence • 69% are mothers
Every dollar donated to Her Justice delivers $6 worth of legal services By leveraging its small legal staff and tapping the human talent and resources of private firms, Her Justice increases exponentially the number of women who go to court with their own lawyers and obtain the legal protections they and their children need and deserve. Last year, our 18-member legal staff trained and mentored 2,400 pro bono lawyers, paralegals and law students who provided 78,000 hours of service valued at more than $34 million and provided representation, legal advice and assistance to over 7,100 women and children.
