Festival Welcome Wow! This is our 15th Annual Festival. We sure have come a long way from our humble beginnings. Back in our first year in 2003, there was no social media to speak of. We had a dream to present the very best music you don’t hear on the radio. Now there are 24 hr a day Blues and Jazz satellite radio stations! We presented a free one day festival in the park headlined by Juno Award winner Jack DeKeyzer. Our Canadian music scene has really developed and our musicians are some of the best in the world. We had an attendance in year one of 2000 with five volunteers, and last year our attendance grew to over 35,000, with 200 volunteers. We have been named one of the Top 100 Festivals & Events in Ontario 6 times and recently won a Headwaters Tourism Award. All of this has been accomplished by a dedicated group of music loving volunteers. The Town of Orangeville really gets behind this festival! The amount of support by so many local businesses and groups is simply amazing and we are very grateful. For many families, this is a great chance to get everyone together for the party of the year! As the festival has grown, we constantly strive to improve and evolve. There are some new initiatives this year as well. We are very proud to have presented such a high quality free event for many years. In an effort to improve our visitors’s experience, we will be licensing our entire Main Stage area in Alexandra Park. You will now be able to enjoy a drink at your seat and watch the great shows. We will be going to a larger single stage with improved audience sight lines. New this year is a $5 daily admission charge for the Main Stage and Opera House concerts. Children 12 and under are free. All other festival events will remain free admission including the ever popular Blues Cruise, TD Local Stars Tent,Pop Up Bands on Broadway, Workshops, Blues & Bikes, plus music in 20 Clubs, Pubs & Restaurants. Our festival is proud to support over 200 local artists who will be performing at the festival. It is a great showcase for many young up and coming musicians to perform in front of an appreciative audience. As we celebrate Canada’s 150 Birthday this year, we are happy to present some of the very best Blues and Jazz artists in the country. A sprinkle of international performers complete the eclectic mix! I hope you have a fantastic time and enjoy our beautiful historic town. We have a great weekend filled with wall to wall music and friendly people, so it’s time to let loose and have some big fun!

Cheers

SATURDAY @ 7:50 PM PAUL REDDICK

Melding poetry, mystery, darkness and light, along with an extensive knowledge of the history and traditions of blues music is what makes Paul Reddick on of the most popular figures on the blues and roots music scene today. For over 25 years he’s been writing and performing his eclectic brand of blues, bringing the art form to new frontiers with his rapacious, deep vocals, masterful harmonica playing and song writing. As the unofficial poet laureate of Canadian blues, words are his weapon of choice and when he sings, it is near impossible not to listen and get lost within the songs, right alongside him and illustrating what the influential British magazine Mojo described as his “wayward brilliance.” With his extensive career and importance as a major player in the Canadian blues scene, there is no doubt that Paul Reddick will long continue to be an innovator and boundary-pusher in the genre.

SATURDAY @ 9:30 PM

LIL’ ED & THE BLUES IMPERIALS ”Electrifying, raucous, pure Chicago blues….Lil’ Ed is a guitarist extraordinaire….slashing slide and flamboyant stage persona.” – Chicago Tribune “Rough and ready blues played with unmitigated intensity…Swirling, snarling, riveting slide….The Blues Imperials pound out riffs and rhythms like they’re overdosing on boogie juice. Scorching and soulful, joyous and stomping.” – Living Blues In Chicago, a city overflowing with unrivaled blues talent, world-renowned Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials have been standing tall for almost 30 years. The band’s big sound, fueled by Lil’ Ed’s gloriously rollicking slide work and deep blues string bending, along with his rough-edged, soulful vocals, is as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. The Chicago Sun-Times says,“Lil’Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.”

SATURDAY @ 2:40 PM SEAN PINCHIN

Monkey Brain is a guitar tour de force, a gritty mash-up of the history of roots guitar music torn down and built back up again. The title track is a grimy ode to our inner, more basic impulses: “When life gets to me. My head starts to change. I give in to my Monkey Brain”. Born in 1981 in Toronto, Sean Pinchin haunts the GTA with his sultry sounds and elegant verse. Pinchin found his calling Vince Maccarone is a performer, producer, composer and educator with over 25 years of playing, teaching and writing experience. Originally from the mining town of Sudbury, Ontario, he has been based in Toronto, Ontario for the past 30 years and formed Los Variants in 2013. A Los Variants performance represents an unbreakable link between traditional music and cutting-edge contemporary. Reggae, Jazz, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influences

are blended into a unique “world music” approach which is the Los Variants ethos. On the upcoming 2017 CD Vince has collaborated with artists from Spain to Jamaica to produce a unique collective known as Vince Maccarone’s Los Variants. Vince and the band members have won and been nominated for many JUNOS,Maple Blues Awards, DORAs and other awards and will be bringing all of their rich musical history to Orangeville 2017.

The Opera House SUNDAY @ 12:10 PM MANITOBA HAL

SUNDAY @ 1:40 PM MICHAEL PICKETT

SUNDAY @ 3:00 PM GUY DAVIS

Manitoba Hal is a consummate blues man, having toured Canada extensively with a ukulele. Picturing him in his 100 year old cottage in Nova Scotia, one can’t help wonder how someone can sound like he grew up in the Deep South of the States and play raw, swamp, delta, Cajun and zydeco style blues. Hal developed the blues sound when he lived in Winnipeg

Manitoba (where he also got his name). “Winnipeg, often referred to as the Chicago of the north, is situated in a delta between the Red and Assiniboine rivers. The blues is where my soul came into this world. Where it will end up I don’t know but I’m ready for the journey”.

In the 70s, 80s, and 90s Michael Pickett established himself as a musically ground-breaking, electrifying singer/ songwriter/harmonica player, [Whiskey Howl, Wooden Teeth, Michael Pickett Band], surrounding himself with some of the top musicians in the country. He’s received two JUNO nominations and won several Jazz Report, Real Blues, and Maple Blues awards including the coveted Maple Blues ‘Blues with a Feeling Award’ for his passionate

lifelong commitment to the blues. Pickett has shared the stage with Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, Jeff Healey, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, John Hammond, Sunnyland Slim, Lazy Lester, Matt Minglewood, Hubert Sumlin, Taj Mahal, Muddy Waters, Son Seals, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Tea Party, George Porter Jr., Lee Oskar, Jerry Portnoy, Watermelon Slim, Guy Davis, and more.

When Guy Davis plays the blues, he doesn’t want you to notice how much art is involved. “It takes work making a song that’s simple, and playful, and easy to do,” he says. “And I don’t want people to see that. I want to uplift and create something that causes delight. And I want some little eight-year-old kid in the front row to have big eyes and say, ‘Hey, I want to do that!’.” Davis’ much-praised 1995 debut, Stomp Down the Rider on Red House Records,

marked the arrival of a major talent, earning acclaim for his deft acoustic playing, his well-traveled voice and his literate, yet highly accessible songwriting. He’s barely rested since then, taking his music to television (the Conan O’Brien and David Letterman shows) and radio (A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, World Cafe, E-Town), as well as performing at theaters and festivals.

The idea that there should be a forum within which they can develop and nurture their skills was born. Under the direction of local jazz virtuoso Ryan Grist, the group’s songbook includes jazz standards, vocal stylings and original material from in-house arranger Cam Millar.

THE DISCARDED

Making music, any kind of music but especially loud punky garage music, feels good. Jared Dean – 17 years old- bass player and brother Caden Jax -14 years old- drummer figured that out quick. The boys needed something positive to grab on to something, something beyond online gaming, so they grabbed their rocker dad and formed a band. J.P Wasson is best known as the drummer for popular Toronto bands like Fifth Column and The Snowdogs, but Caden wanted to drum, so in The Discarded, dad sings and plays guitar.
