AMNH Expeditions For more than 130 years the American Museum of Natural History has launched scientific expeditions across seven continents, mapping the origin and progression of life on this planet and exploring the richness and variety of world cultures. Begin with an inland journey on the North Island to view the boiling mudpots and hissing earth of Rotorua, and enjoy the refinements of Wellington, the country’s up-and-coming capital city. Depart the U.S. for Auckland, the “city of sails.” There is something for everyone here, from stunning views atop Mount Eden to Maori art at the Auckland Museum. Our ﬁrst stop, geothermal Rotorua, lies in the heart of North Island. See Pohutu Geyser, and gather with Maori elders at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Travel to the capital city of Wellington to discuss contemporary cultural and economic issues in New Zealand. Enjoy a walking tour and visit the Te Papa National Museum to learn the history of this “land of the long white cloud.”

Discover the history and natural beauty of the isolated Otago Peninsula. From Dunedin, embark on a nature lover’s expedition to Taiaroa Head, a nesting area for royal albatross and yellow-eyed penguin. Later, explore the town’s Scottish heritage at the Otago Museum’s Southern Land, Southern People Gallery. Cruise to remote Stewart Island, where Rakiura (“land of glowing skies”) is the newest jewel in the park system and a refuge for endangered New Zealand parrot. Clipper Odyssey negotiates the Paterson Inlet, where Zodiacs transport us between Oban Village and Ulva Island. Stroll with naturalists and watch for native birds such as kaka, kakariki, and kereru, as well as indigenous fur seal.

South Island’s spectacular fiords are unforgettable. When the glaciers covering this area retreated, they carved a coast of plunging crevasses, branching lakes, and rock walls enhanced by cascading waterfalls and vast forests. Cruise from Dusky and Doubtful Sounds, winding through the islands of Fiordland National Park. At Milford Sound, disembark and board a smaller ship for a two-hour cruise of the gorgeous fiord. Complete the exploration with a drive through this World Heritage Park for an overnight stay in alpine Queenstown, which is flanked by two mountain ranges, the Remarkables and the Richardsons. The next morning, transfer to the airport for flights to the U.S.

S T U DY L E A D E R S Neville Peat is an award-winning New Zealand nature writer and interpreter. He has published more than 25 books and uses his considerable photography skills to illustrate his own work. In 1998, he authored a report on New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands that earned World Heritage Area status for the ﬁve groups of islands. An elected member of the Otago Regional Council, Neville chairs the council’s Environment and Science Committee. Neville is a ﬁfth-generation descendent of Scottish pioneers and lives on the Otago Peninsula. A very popular lecturer, he infuses travelers with his passion for and encyclopedic knowledge of New Zealand’s natural wonders.

Tom Litwin is director of the Clark Science Center at Smith College and served as the founding director of their Environmental Science and Policy Program. Tom has lectured on the environment at AMNH and has traveled frequently as a guest lecturer on educational study programs. He is a researcher in the ﬁelds of biological sciences and habitat ecology, and was the project creator and expedition leader for the PBS ﬁlm The 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition Retraced: A Century of Change. Tom was appointed an Aldo Leopold Fellow in conservation biology in 2004.

After an overnight flight, relax in Bangkok for a night and then fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, our base for exploring the spectacular stone temples of Angkor. Spend two days in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, once the seat of the powerful Khmer Empire and widely regarded as the crowning achievement of Khmer art and architecture. Visit the fortified city of Angkor Thom with its exquisite carvings that include the Bayon and the Terraces of the Leper King and the Elephants. See dreamlike Ta Prohm, an ancient Buddhist monastery shrouded in jungle vegetation. Visit twelfthcentury Preah Khan, then embark Mekong Pandaw and begin a seven-day cruise from the Tonle Sap River to the heart of the Mekong Delta.

HO CHI MINH CITY AND HANOI In bustling Ho Chi Minh City, visit the History Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, the former Presidential Palace, and the Tunnels of Cu Chi—a vast underground maze used during the Vietnam War. S T U DY L E A D E R S Steve Winter has traveled the world as a photographer for National Geographic Magazine, Newsweek, Audubon, and GEO. He has also worked for international organizations such as UNICEF and the U.N., and major conservation organizations such as World Wildlife Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the Nature Conservancy. He has lectured on conservation and natural history subjects at the National Geographic Society and The Explorers Club. His areas of special interest include conservation biology, natural history, marine ecology, and indigenous cultural practices. Maria Stalford is an MPH candidate in international health and a PhD candidate in social anthropology at Harvard. Her research focuses on the effects of market reforms and economic growth on access to healthcare and provision of social welfare programs in contemporary Vietnam.

Mekong Pandaw recreates the atmosphere and character of the original colonial-era steamers of the 1920s, and affords its passengers the luxury of peaceful cruising through tropical Southeast Asian landscapes. This fascinating land boasts an indigenous population with more than 700 language groups, complex tribal liaisons, and elaborate cultural celebrations. Join us as we trace the path of anthropologist Margaret Mead to the Southern Highlands, home of the Huli Wigmen, the once-ﬁerce warriors who elevate body decoration to a high art. Search for the brilliant-hued bird of paradise in the Tari Gap forest. Follow the Sepik River aboard MTS Discoverer, a luxurious seagoing catamaran. Visit “spirit houses” to uncover tribal rituals and native artistry. Our exploration ends in Madang on the palm-fringed coast.

In the 1930s, explorers seeking gold in the Highlands region discovered more than a million people of numerous tribes whose lifestyles were unchanged since the Stone Age. Fly to Tari to explore the remote Southern Highlands, and drive to the Ambua Lodge, perched at nearly 7,000 feet. Tari Gap, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of lush valleys draped between limestone peaks and watered by countless streams, is home to the Huli Wigmen, who don fantastic ritual wigs of human hair be-

decked with daisies, feathers, and fur. Enjoy rainforest walks to cascading waterfalls, search for the rare bird of paradise, and watch a traditional Huli sing-sing ceremony.

SEPIK RIVER CRUISE D AY S 8 T H R O U G H 1 2

The mighty Sepik winds from the mountains to the sea, through villages rich in cultural and artistic interest. Fly from Tari to picturesque Timbunke and board MTS Discoverer, home for the next five nights. The captain maintains a flexible schedule during the voyage to take advantage of unexpected cultural events. Stop at Tambanum, known for its wood carvers and ornately decorated houses, and also as the site of Margaret Mead’s six-month study. In Angoram, the spirit houses hold artifacts—including flutes, masks, and Kambot storyboards—from villages all along the Sepik. At Mendam, located in a mangrove swamp, bird life is plentiful. Spot white egret, blue heron, and kingfisher among the mangroves, and crocodile basking on the riverbanks. Venture into the river’s backwaters in smaller launches designed for exploring these meandering tributaries.

Arrive in Madang, situated on a coral promontory on the palm-fringed coast of Astrolabe Bay. Visit the local market, the cultural center, and the nearby coastal village of Bilbil, known for its traditional earthenware pots. Those who wish may join an optional snorkeling excursion to one of the offshore islands’ live coral reefs. Enjoy a festive farewell dinner at the Madang Resort Hotel, home to the Elizabeth Sowerby Orchid Collection. S T U DY L E A D E R Mary LeCroy, research associate and retired senior scientiﬁc assistant in the Museum’s Department of Ornithology, is an expert on the bird of paradise. She has researched the behavior and ecology of these elusive birds in Papua New Guinea for more than three decades. Mary’s research has taken her all over Papua New Guinea, and she recently completed ﬁeldwork in the Solomon Islands. In addition to leading natural history lectures and discussions, Mary will help us identify the many bird species we will see during our Sepik River cruise.

World Heritage-listed Wrangel Island boasts the Arctic’s largest winter population of denning polar bear, along with numerous walrus, musk ox, reindeer, and tundra goose. In 1992, scientists uncovered a tooth here from one of the last living woolly mammoths. Weather permitting, cross the Long Strait in helicopters and observe the ship’s dramatic progress through the thick ice from aloft. Venture into alpine valleys and snow-covered tundra in the company of the Russian scientists who protect the island. Then head south, leaving the ice behind to explore Siberia’s coastal wilderness and the far-flung villages of the native Chukchi, who still herd reindeer and practice traditional hunting techniques. SYMPOSIUM LEADERS Ross MacPhee is chairman of the Department of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. In 1998, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Scientists, Dr. MacPhee collected woolly mammoth remains on Wrangel Island. His most recent work has focused on how extinction of a species occurs, particularly those cases in which humans have been implicated. His publications include Extinctions in Near Time: Causes, Contexts, and Consequences (editor). William Fitzhugh is the director of Smithsonian’s Arctic Studies Center at the National Museum of Natural History. He has spent more than 30 years studying arctic peoples and cultures in northern Canada, Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia. As curator of the Museum’s arctic collections, Dr. Fitzhugh has produced four international exhibitions, including Crossroads of Continents: Native Cultures of Siberia and Alaska.

John Harte, a physicist by training, is a professor of energy and resources at UC Berkeley. Dr. Harte’s research focuses on the effects of human action on biodiversity, ecosystem structure, and climate. He has published scientific papers concerning polar region climate change, and has led educational programs to Baffin Island, Greenland, and Antarctica. Ronald Prinn is the director of the Center for Global Change Science at MIT. He headed the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences from 1998 to 2003. Dr. Prinn is working closely with social scientists to link the science and policy aspects of global change. He has published more than 160 scientific papers and several books.

ANCIENT DILMUN The ancient holy land of Dilmun was once located in what is now Bahrain. Because of its location along the sea trade routes linking Mesopotamia with the Indus Valley, Dilmun developed and ﬂourished in the Bronze Age (from about 3000 B.C.), into one of the greatest known trade centers of the ancient world. The “Golden Age” of Dilmun lasted from approximately 2200 to 1600 B.C., and the civilization’s decline dates from the middle of the second millennium B.C., when the Indus Valley civilization mysteriously collapsed, stripping Dilmun of its importance as a trading hub between Mesopotamia and India. Evidence of Neolithic culture in Dilmun comes from excavated ﬂint tools, weapons, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, and pottery. Sometimes described as the “Land of the Living,” Dilmun is the scene of a Sumerian creation myth and the place where the Sumerian hero Ziusudra was granted immortality by the gods. Dilmun’s rich archaeological sites are of great interest today; it has been linked to the biblical Garden of Eden and described as paradise in The Epic of Gilgamesh.

T H E N A B ATA E A N S The Nabataeans, an ancient Arab tribe, settled in southern Jordan around the sixth century B.C. and became the undisputed master of the region’s trade routes, levying tolls and protecting the caravans that passed from the Persian Gulf, Western Arabia, and the Red Sea. Petra was the spectacular capital city of this powerful and wealthy kingdom. Palaces, temples, and tombs were carved into massive, rose-colored cliffs during the third century B.C. A shift to sea-trade routes initiated the tribe’s decline, and by 7 A.D. Petra lay forgotten. In 1812 the Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt, disguised as a Muslim trader, discovered this “lost city,” now one of the most mysterious and dramatic archaeological sites in the world.

All tour prices and airfares quoted in this brochure are based on tariffs, costs, and exchange rates of the United States dollar that were in effect at the time of publication. Consequently, prices herein are subject to change. American Museum of Natural History Expeditions and the Tour Operator reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time.

ELIGIBILITY Participation in an AMNH Expedition is a beneﬁt of membership in the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire journey. For family programs, please refer to the recommended minimum age indicated in the trip description. Otherwise, there are no age restrictions, but all participants must be in good health.

B A S I S O F R AT E S All prices are based on two persons sharing a room or cabin. All prices and fares are quoted in U.S. dollars. The rates are based on current tariffs and are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we will do everything possible to maintain the listed prices, if it is necessary to levy a surcharge we reserve the right to do so and notiﬁcation will be given at the time of ﬁnal invoicing.

C A N C E L L AT I O N Deposits are fully refundable if a written notice of cancellation is received by American Museum of Natural History Expeditions within 30 days of receipt of deposit; after that, they are 100% nonrefundable. Cancellations after ﬁnal payment: 100% penalty. An application for cancellation insurance will be mailed with your conﬁrmation. For your protection, cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Refunds cannot be made to passengers who do not complete the tour for any reason at all. American Museum of Natural History Expeditions and the Tour Operator reserve the right, without penalty, to withdraw the tour announced (i.e., cancel a tour), to decline to accept any person as a participant in a tour, or to require any participant to withdraw from a tour at any time at his/her own expense, when such action is determined by tour staff to be in the best interest of the health, safety, or general welfare of the tour group or the individual participant, and is subject only to the requirement that the recoverable portion of the tour price that corresponds to the cost of unused services and accommodations be refunded, if any.

All participants should be in good health and capable of walking over sometimes steep, rough terrain. By forwarding the deposit for passage, the passenger certiﬁes that he/she does not have any physical or other condition of disability that would create a hazard for him/herself or other passengers.

RESPONSIBILITY To ensure ethical behavior toward local ecosystems and peoples, American Museum of Natural History Expeditions (AMNHE) selects tour operators who have a demonstrated history of responsible tourism. It is clearly understood that AMNHE will provide the educational enrichment program and is in no way responsible for the operations of the Tour Operator (TO), local agents, and other transportation companies. AMNHE and the TO act only as agents for the passenger with respect to transportation, hotels, and all other related travel services and assume no responsibility, howsoever caused, for personal injury, damage, loss, accident, expense, delay, act of God, or military action beyond their control. AMNHE assumes no liability whatsoever for negligence by the TO or its agents. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the passenger and the carrier. AMNHE and the TO are not responsible for unexpected transportation delays and changes, nor liable for additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. The airline/transportation companies concerned are not responsible for any acts, omissions, or events that may occur during the time passengers are not on board their vehicles. AMNHE and the TO reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from the tour at his/her own expense when such an action is determined appropriate by the tour staff to be in the best interest of the participant’s health and safety, and that of the tour group in general. AMNHE shall not be responsible for any inadvertent errors in this catalog or other descriptive materials.
