2008 Discovery Cruises Voyages Inspired by the Museum’s Rich History & Cutting-Edge Research
7()4
Dear Museum Traveler, For more than 130 years, the American Museum of Natural History has launched scientific expeditions across seven continents, mapping the origin and progression of life on this planet and exploring the richness and variety of world cultures. Museum log books are filled with reports from many of history’s luminaries: Franz Boas in the North Pacific, Roy Chapman Andrews in Asia, Theodore Roosevelt in South America, Robert Peary at the North Pole, Carl Akeley in Africa, and Margaret Mead in the South Pacific. Today AMNH scientists continue to embark on new, history-making expeditions around the world. Inspired by this spirit of expedition, members and friends of the Museum have been exploring the world on American Museum of Natural History Expeditions in the company of AMNH scientists for more than 50 years. AMNH Expeditions transports travelers beyond the halls of the Museum to experience firsthand the world’s greatest wildlife areas, archaeological sites, and cultural treasures from pole to pole and everywhere in between. From the sparkling waters of the Black Sea to the wild frontier of Patagonia, AMNH Expeditions offers unique itineraries that benefit from the exclusive resources of AMNH and our international network of scientific associates. To learn more about AMNH Expeditions, join us on our next cruise! Warm regards,
Alicia V. Stevens Director, AMNH Expeditions

The excellent crew-to-passenger ratios guarantee that service is friendly and attentive, and top-class accommodations and delicious cuisine are standard on all our small ships.
Our Study Leaders Every AMNH Expedition is accompanied by expert leaders who enhance our travels with their pa ssio n for the destinations we visit and their knowledge of topics as varied as anthropology, geology, biodiversity, evolution, conservation, paleontology, astronomy, and cultural history and archaeology. Along with providing a series of formal lectures, these e n g a g i n g schol a rs are our travel companions and cultural ambassadors, available for i n - de p th disc u ssio n and one-on-one conversation throughout our journey.

Join study leader Susan Perkins in the Belize Barrier Reef, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996 and home to more than seventy species of coral and thousands of fish and invertebrates. Angelfish, spotted eagle ray, Hawksbill sea turtle, and schools of snapper and jack all inhabit these remarkably azure waters off the white sand coast of Central America. Snorkel and swim in the Blue Hole—a perfectly round, collapsed cave with spectacular coral reefs surrounding a circle of deep blue water. Visit the thriving bird sanctuary on Half Moon Caye, where an observation platform provides excellent views of a red-footed booby colony. Explore the three major coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere—Lighthouse Reef, Glover’s Reef, and the Turneffe Islands—while cruising in luxury aboard Le Levant.
The Galápagos Islands rank among the world’s greatest destinations for nature lovers. Following in Darwin’s path, this island-toisland journey aboard the comfortable Isabela II affords close-up views of species such as frigate bird and endangered tortoise, as well as the nesting areas of blue-footed booby. Walk among hundreds of land iguana basking in the equatorial sun. Explore stunning lava formations and hike amidst the unique flora, fauna, and geology of the islands’ only rainforest. Meet Lonesome George, the sole survivor of Pinta Island’s tortoise population, and learn about ongoing conservation projects at the Charles Darwin Research Center. Snorkel and kayak among colorful fish, playful penguin, and curious sea lion by day, and stargaze from the deck of the Isabela II at night. AMNH study leader Michael Shara joins this departure.
Explore the archaeological and cultural riches of Egypt with study leader Tarek Swelim, including a four-day voyage along the Nile River aboard Sun Boat IV. Discover the pyramids of Giza, the massive temples of Karnak, and the tombs of the Theban necropolis. Stand before the enormous statue of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel. Sail in a traditional felucca at Aswan and see the High Dam, a marvel of modern engineering. Recapture the spirit of intrepid nineteenthcentury antiquarians on this unforgettable voyage through time that begins and ends with hotel stays in Cairo. At every stage of the journey, enjoy behind-the-scenes access and the perspective of our expert study leader and guest lecturers.

Learn about the Polynesian people, called “God’s best, at least God’s sweetest work” by Robert Louis Stevenson, through demonstrations of traditional dance, woodcarving, and the making of tapa (paperlike cloth). Visit a black-pearl farm where the islands’ most important export is produced and sample the fresh flavors of Polynesian cuisine. Swim and snorkel in the clear, warm seas of the South Pacific, where a kaleidoscopic world of colorful marine life beckons.
China’s emergence as a global economic force is changing the balance of power between East and West. Travel to East Asia in the company of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry for an in-depth exploration of the region’s history, culture, and politics. Aboard the privately chartered Silver Whisper, engage in intimate group lectures and conversations with distinguished world leaders who influenced the course of history. Discuss the rise of China as a world power and the past and future of the U.S./ China relationship with an elite panel of speakers. This exclusive symposium begins in some of China’s greatest cities and continues to South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Visit the places where history is being made, in the company of those who made it.
Venture to the remote tropical islands and archipelagos of Costa Rica and Panama aboard the elegant Le Levant and marvel at one of humankind’s most illustrious engineering achievements, the Panama Canal, during a rare daylight transit. Observe thousands of nesting birds up close during a Zodiac excursion at Pacheqa Island and visit the indigenous Kuna people, famed for their carefully embroidered molas, in the San Blas Islands. Tour Costa Rica’s National Institute of Biodiversity and Panama’s Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Stroll through ambient cloud forests and pristine jungle, and swim and snorkel in warm, turquoise waters. Stretching across the southern reaches of Argentina and Chile, Patagonia’s wild frontier is a world unto itself. Join study leaders Howard Topoff and Carol Simon to cruise among the remote fjords and ancient glaciers of Cape Horn, the Beagle Channel, and the Strait of Magellan aboard Via Australis. Explore Patagonia’s crown jewel, Torres del Paine National Park, surrounded by windswept steppes, monolithic granite peaks, and sheer, frozen cliffs. From rocky shores and verdant rice terraces to serene gardens, the natural beauty of Japan is poignant and dramatic. This memorable program combines four days in the ancient city of Kyoto with a seven-night cruise aboard Spirit of Oceanus and a two-day stay in cosmopolitan Tokyo. Discover the poetry of Japan’s island world, and the tranquility of centuries-old Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Feel the echo of power in shogun strongholds and the quiet charm of fishing villages. Explore Japan’s rich culture, complex history, and the ephemeral grace of its silkscreen-like landscapes on this memorable fifteen-day journey.
From Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands, sample the Celtic influence throughout the British Isles. Begin with a hotel stay in London and a visit to mysterious Stonehenge. Admire the Book of Kells in Dublin and visit the tiny Scottish isle of Iona, where that manuscript was produced 1,200 years ago. Aboard the spacious Island Sky, follow England’s picturesque Cornish coast to Wales, where you can ride a narrow-gauge railway through Snowdonia National Park. Marvel at such World Heritage sites as the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland and Skara Brae in Scotland’s remote Orkney Islands. Discover some of the loveliest lands in Britain: Scotland’s craggy islands, picturesque lochs, and wild highlands.
