The very first step towards becoming the Battersea we know was the building of a riverside manor house by the Bishop of Durham in the 1470s. This was passed to the famous Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York under Henry VIII, who referred to his little house in ‘Batirsey’. It is not surprising that this part of London is still renowned for its green spaces: until the 19th Century, the immediate area was little inhabited, Plough Road was hedged on either side and much of the land was let by the lord of the manor house for extensive market gardening. This was a lush and verdant area, known for the herds of cows which drifted lazily from field to field and for the range of crops that were grown. It was here that the first domestic asparagus was cultivated, and the now bustling Lavender Hill area was then a mass of purple lavender fields. Towards the end of the 18th Century, the first bridge across the Thames in this area linked Battersea directly with London for the first time and the district prospered. Housing sprang up and, with the arrival of Nine Elms station and then Clapham Junction in 1846, York Road became a prosperous Victorian community with homes and shops lining the pavement. Now, in the early days of the 21st Century, the promise of stylish city living has been realised. Thriving shops and world-class restaurants line the streets and people flock to an area which offers both the peace of open parkland and the excitement of the urban lifestyle.

seat of nobility

The area around Parkside St Peters is rich in history. The regeneration of Battersea Power Station and the building of Parkside St Peters is merely the latest chapter in a story of 500 years of change.

Huge investment in the area around Nine Elms and historic Battersea Power Station will bring extraordinary change to the neighbourhood. This corner of Battersea is destined to become a thriving and vibrant riverside community with world-class galleries, markets and restaurants. Comprehensive investment in the transport infrastructure has ensured the imminent construction of a new Underground station and extension of the Northern Line, while the proposed Diamond Jubilee Footbridge across the Thames will link Chelsea Harbour and Battersea. Residents will be able to walk or cycle across the river, linking north and south of the Thames and meaning that Battersea is even better connected.

a changing landscape

Parkside St. Peters is situated in the heart of Battersea, an area in the midst of a spectacular transformation.

The renowned bars and restaurants of St John’s Hill are just minutes away and you’re just a stone’s throw from Northcote Road with its fashionable shops and cafes. The weekend market here is busy with shoppers lazily browsing artisan bread, antiques, florists, fishmongers and craft stalls. Nearby Battersea Square offers a quaint, village atmosphere with the tables and chairs of a host of local restaurants lining the tree-shaded town square. Have a drink here before wandering down to catch some contemporary art at the local Pump House Gallery.

the neighbourhood

Overlooking leafy and historic York Gardens, Parkside St. Peters is nestled in the vibrant centre of Battersea. People have long known that this is a neighbourhood with a heart, and residents have flocked here for a sense of community on the doorstep of central London.

the neighbourhood

At Parkside St. Peters, the clue is in the title: York Gardens, Wandsworth Common and Battersea Park are all on your doorstep. The development overlooks York Gardens for a feeling of space and greenery right outside the front door. Just down the road is Wandsworth Common with its immaculate 171 acres of lawn and trees. It boasts five tennis courts, a beautiful bowls lawn, playground for children and a charming neighbourhood cafe right in the middle. Only a little further away, there’s Battersea Park, with wide, sun-dappled boulevards, serene boating lake and even a zoo.

green spaces

The jewel in the crown of Battersea has to be its green spaces. This is an area renowned for its abundance of parkland.

green spaces The Thames runs along the bottom of Plough Road and from here you can join the 180 magical miles of Thames Path on foot or bicycle, leading through pretty Putney, picturesque Barnes Village and, if you’re feeling ambitious, all the way to the Cotswolds.

Sit out and enjoy brunch in the sunshine at the acclaimed Ben’s Canteen or stroll over to energetic Northcote Road for a wander through the fashionable shops, antiques market and food stalls. There’s ‘the best pizza in Britain’ at Franco Manca, Spanish tapas at the bar at Lola Rojo, artisan breads at the famous Bread Stall, and genuine French meringues and brioche from Aux Marveilleux. Whatever your taste, it’s covered. The sun sets and Northcote Records springs to life, with the friendliest bar staff south of the river, expert cocktail making, a fantastic playlist and regular live music. For something a little cosier, there’s the local favourite, The Roundhouse Pub, popular for its regular film nights - combining good wine and food with classic movies and popcorn. Or if you like your films a little more up to date, there’s the Picturehouse Cinema, with its fiendishly difficult film quiz, just up the road in Clapham Common.
