Instagram Retail Interior By lauryn chen
DESIGN BRIEF • With the ever-increasing demand from online shopping, traditional bricks and mortar high street retailers need to find new ways to entice shoppers into their stores. Stores need to become more experience based, providing buyers with a reason to want to shop there. Store interiors should contain more than just racks and shelves of products, shoppers should could be given demos, take part in making, learn and be educated thus establishing a greater brand connection.
• Design a store with areas that provide different activities for buyers to engage with. You should seek inspiration from existing stores that do this well eg Nike Town, Sketch Restaurant (London), Armani Store in NY (Fuksas Architects)

It’s no surprise that London is so well equipped when it comes to places to hunt for technology goodies given the fact that it is home to East London’s Tech City, a technology district occupied by some of the most cutting-edge entrepreneurs working in tech today. With the likes of Facebook and Google having invested in the area, you’ll be in good company when you visit to look around. And so making use of that research I decided to come up with my own retail store based around technology. Instagram is a largely renowned social media presence and billions of people use it everyday, so what would be better than creating a very own store based on the massive app?

Other communal spaces
Public spaces play a vital role in the social life of communities. They act as a ‘self-organising public service’, a shared resource in which experiences and value are created
Public spaces offer many benefits: the ‘feel-good’ buzz from being part of a busy street scene; the therapeutic benefits of quiet time spent on a park bench; places where people can display their culture and identities and learn awareness of diversity and difference; opportunities for children and young people to meet, play or simply ‘hang out’. All have important benefits and help to create local attachments, which are at the heart of a sense of community
Paper folded models
Paper model
I decided to use the idea of movement and flow from my moodboard by creating this model using paper. I used the inspiration from my research photo of the aquarium at Sea World and ocean waves in order to make this model, curving different ends to give the feel and representation of waves
Wave inspiration
Wire model
I wanted to do something different for this design and so, for this model I decided to use wire instead of paper, in order for a more rigid and stationary model. Interestingly, my design represents a tree more than a light flow sculpture and so this also could tie into my rustic interior design I used the artist Siyon Jin as part of my inspiration, he uses light flow sources to influence his art pieces and so I used this art piece But mainly this art piece as inspiration for my retail interior, as the colours are bright neon pink, purple and blue which are the allocated colours that represent Instagram. I like how attention grabbing and sophisticated it looks
Paper model
Continuing the idea of movement and flow from my moodboard I decided to create this model using paper. Paper is easily manipulated and was able to provide me with different shapes and forms I could use (In this case I decided to use the edge of the table)
Waves to show the structure of the ceiling
Potential idea of a building layout – I encorporated the waves and curves and used my original dome structure idea
Cardboard model
Rustic colour; earthy Continuing the idea of a rustic interior, I decided to create a model using cardboard due to ecofriendly reasons. Even though the shop is mostly cool there will be rustic aspects (for example trees)
I added depth to the model by overlapping the small cut outs of cardboard in order to give a sense of levels
Sketchup Designs
Representing organic form
I decided to experiment with different versions/styles of my Sketchup model. The bottom right shows my design in its original version/style, and so does the top left, except shadows are added on in this version so my audience can see what it will look like realistically
I also experimented with these versions of my design, for example the top left, wherefore its more of a drawing to show a more sketchy, unfinished version (This also links into my rustic idea as this style could be described as earthy/grainy and unfinished)
This version shows a kind of silhouette of my building, but with more cooler tones which would also link into my Movement and Flow mood board
