Letter from the President: A REFLECTION

I am pleased to present the 2023-2024 Annual Report, which celebrates the spirited volunteerism, generous philanthropic support and extraordinary accomplishments made over the past year.

On behalf of the Lausanne Board of Trustees, I offer my most sincere gratitude for your unwavering dedication to our mission. Your commitment is the heartbeat of Lausanne’s success, as the very essence of the Lausanne experience - everything that makes us distinctive and transformative - is a direct result of your investment in our school.

I would also like to thank my fellow Board members, whose passionate dedication to governance and fiscal oversight continuously propels our school forward with Lausanne’s mission and vision at the helm. Together, we remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering exceptional education and boundless opportunities to each and every Lausanne student, now and for centuries to come.

Thank you again to all who continue to shape Lausanne’s future. As always, I hope this report fills each of you with immense pride in who we are, what we do and all that lies ahead.

“Between the construction of Shockey Hall, the success of our championship basketball team and the introduction of the IB program, I was already amazed by the tremendous growth I’d witnessed during my four years on campus, but after returning for my 20th reunion, I found that the school had far exceeded anything I could have imagined. The sky is the limit for Lausanne! When I reflect on my experience here, I’m amazed at how much I learned both in and outside of the classroom. Not only was I academically prepared for college, but I also developed a strong connection to my community, which I attribute to Lausanne’s emphasis on service, inclusivity and global awareness. Lausanne helped me become a well-rounded individual, teaching me that it’s valuable to embrace multiple interests. Today, I balance many roles - aspiring yoga instructor, sports enthusiast, physician in an underserved area and mother to a rambunctious 8-year-old! I’m fortunate to remain closely connected to campus through my parents, now Lausanne grandparents, and my nephew. When I contribute, I know I’m helping to educate the next generation of global servant leaders.”

“We’ve never seen a place live its mission more consistently than Lausanne. From the parking lot to the boardroom, the commitment to kindness and excellence is evident within every corner of campus, and we expect to see countless generations impacted by the nurturing community and education offered here. Our relationship with Lausanne is reciprocal; we want to give back because Lausanne has given so much to our family, and we intend to serve the community long after our children have graduated!”

“When our girls were born, we were faced with the important and somewhat daunting decision of how to provide them with the best educational environment. After learning more about Lausanne, we realized that no other school in the area, or even the state, offers the same opportunity for growth. When we first enrolled, the world was in the midst of a global pandemic, but despite seemingly insurmountable challenges, Lausanne adapted and overcame. That took vision, and the power of Lausanne’s vision has been apparent at every turn. When we first saw the plans for campus expansion, we were in disbelief. Not only were they incredible, but in the very center of the new Upper School atrium sat a bright yellow slide. Earlier in the year, during her Headmaster for the Day experience, Pippa had drawn a big, yellow slide on a set of ‘plans’, which she excitedly told us about at home that evening. At the time, we laughed together at the idea of a slide inside of a school. But lo and behold, Lausanne had listened. And it was at that moment we knew – we had to see this through. That yellow slide represents the principle that no idea - and no child - is insignificant. This is the message Lausanne has instilled within our girls and the message they will continue to instill within each and every student they help raise. Lausanne is so much more than a school – it’s the experience of a lifetime.”

Upper Middle School’s Lynx Performance Ensemble class allows students to celebrate the performing arts by honing vocal skills across various styles, mastering acting techniques and character development and exploring diverse dance genres. The class provides a unique opportunity for students to grow as individual performers while also embracing the power of collaboration within an ensemble. Comprehensive audition preparation ensures that students are fully equipped for success in all areas of performance, while various performance opportunities throughout the school year allow students to shine on stage.

In May, students in the class delivered a stellar rendition of Peace, Love and Cupcakes, a musical performance marking the culmination of a months-long effort. During the show, thanks to generous support of the Lausanne Community Fund, students were able to utilize brand new lavalier microphones, adding a professional touch to an already impressive performance. The dedication of these young performers was as clear and inspiring as the vocals, making Peace, Love and Cupcakes an act to remember.

Last fall, in alignment with Lausanne's continual professional development efforts, 12 faculty members traveled to Belize as part of a profound, cross-cultural educational experience with Santa Elena Primary School (SEPS). Throughout the trip, Lausanne faculty gained insight into essential new tools and teaching practices, led various classroom lessons, engaged in meaningful discussions with school leaders and solidified relationships for future collaborative endeavors – all while immersing themselves within the local culture.

“ The opportunity for our faculty to observe, learn from and partner with teachers and students from another region of the world is invaluable. A healthy exchange of best practices is imperative for continued professional growth,” reflected John Donecker, Head of Middle School.

He and Erica McBride, Assistant Head of Lower School, also facilitated sessions with administrators from SEPS and other local schools. These sessions encouraged thought-provoking discussions concerning global learning, competency-based teaching methodologies and faculty support.

In May, our littlest Lynx enjoyed Lausanne's Week of the Young Child, an annual celebration honoring the wonder of childhood and the crucial roles of family, friendship and play within a child's development.

During the week-long tradition, JK students brought out their bikes and scooters for a ride-along event inspired by Lower School teacher Amy Morrison's 500-mile bike ride to Sea Grove, FL in support of West Cancer Foundation. JK enjoyed a parade around Tanner Loop while PK2-3 students excitedly cheered them on. Inspired by the celebration, Lausanne’s LynxServe program donated to the foundation in their honor.

“Seeing our young students support a meaningful cause through such a joyful ride reminds us that even the smallest action can make a big difference,” Morrison shared.

“Their enthusiasm and compassion inspire us all to contribute to the well-being of others, and we appreciate LynxServe donating on the school’s behalf. We're grateful for such a strong community support system here at Lausanne.”

Keri Burnette, West Cancer Foundation’s VP of Operations, also joined the ride-along. She was deeply touched by the event and decided to introduce a kids' bike-a-thon to the foundation’s West Fight On event in September.

DONNA KAYE FISHER

’67

April 9, 1949 - August 14, 2022

During her time at Lausanne, Donna was a glowing example of tireless student leadership. Among other distinguished titles, she served as Day Attendant, Proctor, President of the National Honor Society, Editor-in-Chief of The Columns and member of The Quill & Scroll, the Library Service Guild and the Honor Convention.

After graduating in 1967 and later earning her law degree, Donna went on to build a successful career which culminated at Ogletree Deakins, a notable labor and employment firm. During that time, Lausanne enjoyed the privilege of welcoming her back to campus as Commencement Speaker during the Class of 1975 graduation ceremony.

Donna was a devout patron of numerous Memphis organizations, holding special regard for those dedicated to the arts, conservancy, education and humanitarian efforts. Perhaps most notably, she served as volunteer, president and later Honorary Director for Life of the Memphis Zoological Society, tenures during which she pioneered wonderfully successful efforts to expand the Memphis Zoo, provide information to visitors and help protect animals from mistreatment.

In December 2023, little more than a year after her passing, Lausanne was honored with a generous gift from Donna’s estate. As a tribute to her profound love for the natural world, this contribution will be used to create a state-of-the-art greenspace, named in her honor, within our new Upper School for students and faculty alike to enjoy for generations to come.

Lausanne is incredibly grateful and humbled to be part of Donna’s remarkable legacy. While we can’t imagine a day when she won’t be deeply missed, we find true comfort in knowing her light will continue to shine – throughout campus and within each and every corner of the city she so proudly called home.

AWARDS & HONORS

The Lausanne Way Award

The Lausanne Way award is presented annually to an individual who serves as a powerful inspiration to our community through actions which embody the core values of The Lausanne Way.

On September 21, 2023, The Lausanne Way Award was posthumously presented to Leo Bearman. A former trustee, brother to Kay Bearman ’56, father to Amy Bearman Dorsey ’86 and grandfather to Isaac Dorsey ’22 and Levi Dorsey ’25, Leo served as an integral member of the Lausanne community for decades as a tireless guardian, formidable leader and generous philanthropic supporter.

In attendance to accept the award on Leo’s behalf were his daughter Amy and daughter-in-law Judy. As an added tribute to his legacy, the Upper School Academic Dean’s Office was dedicated in his memory.

Young Alumni Panel

On January 5, 2024, Upper School kicked off the new semester with a special visit from seven Lausanne graduates during the annual Young Alumni Panel.

Panelists graciously shared personal experiences and insights regarding the various procedures involved in applying for college, the many ways Lausanne prepares its students for higher education and the highs and lows of post-graduate life. After the presentation, students were able to engage in a Q&A session and connect with other alumni in attendance.

Chair of Ideas

One of the school's most prestigious honors, the Chair of Ideas title has been awarded 25 times since 1994 to Lausanne alumni and other distinguished individuals, continuing a tradition that began with the school's Distinguished Speaker Series in the 1960s during which individuals such as Margaret Mead, William F. Buckley, B.F. Skinner and Aldous Huxley spoke to our students.

On March 25, 2024, this honor was bestowed upon Rebecca Baer ’01, who serves as Senior Digital Editor for Southern Living Magazine. With nearly two decades of experience working in television, radio and print, she has held several esteemed titles including author, talkSPORT radio producer and CNN writer and field producer.

During her visit, Rebecca spoke to Upper School students about the art of asking questions - a skill she says she gained while attending Lausanne - and shared personal insights into her career in journalism, international living and embracing rejection. She also enjoyed participating in an Anthropology class discussion on travel and the concept of culture shock as well as an English class debate surrounding Julie Otsuka’s novel, When the Emperor Was Divine She later had the opportunity to visit Lower School students who greatly enjoyed hearing about her experience with interviewing a NASCAR driver.

Commencement Speaker

On May 25, 2024, Lausanne had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Justine Okerson Whitfield '01 as the Class of 2024 Commencement Speaker. After excelling in her academic pursuits at Lausanne, Justine went on to achieve great success in her professional endeavors and currently serves as Senior Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission at East Carolina University.

Throughout her speech, she inspired students and families alike by illustrating the idea that it's okay to deviate from societal expectations and pave your own way, despite the fact that doing so can be a daunting decision. She spoke about the importance of courage, conviction and creating a legacy that is authentically ‘you’, leaving the Class of 2024 more empowered than ever to seek their own journeys.

Reflections on Lausanne and the World Beyond

Jim Clark

Graduation Year: 1985

Current City, State: Katy, TX

What’s your favorite Lausanne memory?

I have so many fond memories of Lausanne, but I think my favorite would be my senior year and everything that came with it - things like our senior cruise to The Bahamas, senior prom at the Memphis Hunt & Polo Club, being able to use the Senior Stairwell and the excitement of all the possibilities that lay ahead.

Tell us a bit about life since Lausanne.

How has Lausanne impacted your life?

After graduating from Lausanne, I earned a BA in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee. In the years that followed, I worked on several archaeological excavation projects in the southeastern United States as well as one in Oban, Scotland for the University of Edinburgh. In 1993, I moved to Houston, where I later met my wonderful wife Rebecca. In 1997, I started law school at South Texas College of Law and have been practicing consumer bankruptcy law ever since. I have two beautiful daughters and, on July 3, 2024, became a first-time grandfather.

I think the quality of education I received at Lausanne certainly prepared me for college, but more importantly, the amazing and truly caring teachers were very positive influences and helped shape the adult that I would become.

What advice do you have for current Lausanne students?

Do what you love to do, not what someone else wants you to do or something that you think will make you the most money. If you love your job, everything else will fall into place. There are too many people who hate their job, which negatively impacts everything in their lives. Do what you love, and you will love life itself.

One of my favorite memories at Lausanne is participating in ArtsFest SportsFest, especially during my senior year, when I had the opportunity to help organize the events.

After graduating from Lausanne, I attended Rhodes College and later Duke University for Nursing School. Following my time at Duke, I got engaged and moved to Memphis with my fiancé. I currently work at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and will soon be attending Duke University again - this time to attain my MSN from their top-ranked Nurse Practitioner program.

During my time as a student, Lausanne was all an all-girls school with boarding students from all over the world that added so much to the experience. I also loved the environment because of the wonderful teachers, particularly my Spanish teacher, Mrs. Bosak. Her passion for Spain and its culture inspired me to continue studying the language in college and beyond.

I graduated college and later married Marty, my husband of 42 years. In 2002, I started my business, pro-mo’s ad specialties, which continues to flourish today. Marty and I have two wonderful children, Kris and David, who both serve in the legal field. Having previously served on the Lausanne Board of Trustees for three years, I now serve on the Lausanne Alumni Board. I love being involved with the school, and it’s been incredibly fun to witness its evolution. In my spare time, I love to play pickleball.

Lausanne has had a significant impact on my life, especially in terms of my ability to embrace and appreciate diversity. The diverse student body at Lausanne taught me to approach healthcare holistically, considering the various cultural and religious backgrounds of each patient.

One piece of advice I'd offer is to recognize that life doesn't follow a single path. If you find yourself unable to achieve a goal through one route, don't be afraid to explore other options. There's a reason things happen the way they do, and often, unexpected paths lead to even greater opportunities.

The atmosphere at Lausanne encouraged us to remain curious and to learn as much as we could about everything. To this day, whenever I hear an unfamiliar term, I have to look it up immediately. Mrs. Hutter - our most feared English teacher - would have insisted.

You are so fortunate to be at Lausanne; please take full advantage of the opportunity. After graduation, stay connected to your classmates, visit campus often and when you’re able, make the decision to give back. Lausanne’s future depends on us.

2024-2025 LAUSANNE LEADERSHIP

Lausanne welcomed six new members to the Board of Trustees at the start of the 2024-2025 school year. These individuals are highly respected by the Lausanne community for their leadership, thoughtfulness and dedication to our school and to the broader Memphis community.

Letter from the Headmaster: ONWARD

As we inch closer to Lausanne’s centennial, I’m filled with awe as I reflect on the incredible journey that has led to us such a pivotal time in school history. This past year has been yet another showcase of incredible accomplishments by our students and faculty, and the opportunities afforded to them have all been made possible by the unwavering support of our community. Your gifts of time, financial resources and goodwill are the driving force behind our progress and have brought us so much closer to realizing our shared vision for Lausanne’s future.

Today, Lausanne stands at the forefront of realizing its full potential by transforming campus into an environment in which our students and faculty can truly thrive. Throughout the year ahead, your ongoing support will be more crucial than ever. With your help, our beloved school will shine as an even brighter beacon of global innovation as we step into our next 100 years.

Thank you for being part of the Lausanne community. We are deeply honored and excited to continue this journey with you - the BEST is yet to come.

With – and only with – your help, Lausanne will be able to make a relevant, effective and enduring impact on the lives of our students for centuries to come.

THE WORLD NEEDS OUR STUDENTS, AND OUR STUDENTS NEED YOU.

In the spring, Lausanne unveiled its most ambitious comprehensive campaign to date. Thanks to believers like you, we have the best students, faculty and curricula – but as we approach our centennial, it’s time we added facilities to that list.

Stretching far beyond an aesthetic upgrade, this project serves as a profound commitment to transforming campus into an environment which properly reflects the unmatched quality of a Lausanne education – one which prepares our students to not only exist in the world but to shape it.
