Hello! I’m Laura Medina Medina, a Spanish architect.

I started my study career at the Faculty of Architecture in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), where I graduated in 2019. Since I was a little girl, I loved travelling and living abroad. So I also did some years of architecture school studying abroad.

I studied one year in Trento (Università degli studi di Trento) and in Valencia (UPV). Just after graduating, I moved to Slovenia and started an internship in a big office in Ljubljana. After the internship, I also worked as a junior architect in a smaller office. In this way, I could learn how architects work in this country in different offices scale, different type of projects , and how to get immersed in the Slovene culture and its language. Projekti pri katerih je sodelovala so bili v fazah idejne zasnove, gradbenega dovoljenja ter projekta za izvedbo. Sodelovala je pri izrisu tlorisov, prerezov, fasad, 3D modelov shem stavbnega pohištva ter vizualizacij. Pri tem je bila potrebna tudi izdelava detaljnih načrtov opreme ter finalnih fasadnih oblog. Laura je zanesljiva, natančna ter ustvarjalna oseba z dobro delovno vnemo, ki lahko tudi v stresnem okolju ohrani osredotočenost na nalogo. Njene sposobnosti pri izrisu digitalnih risb, grafičnih predstavitvah in modeliranju so ji omogočile profesionalno odzivanje v najbolj zahtevnih pogojih. The site is located in the coastal city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. One of the main beaches of the city, known as Las Alcaravaneras, can be reached by a long homogeneous seaside pedestrian promenade. The main strategy is based in organizing the businesses and the original program under the Wave promenade. The promenade can guide the pedestrians through all the different shops and businesses while creates, at the same time, a relation with the port, the sea and the city.

The result will give to the city of Las Palmas, a transition from the cosmopolitan urban style, to the typical environment of the port.

In Valencia, a region of Spain, where production of rice is the main activity for centuries, the village of Catarroja has lost this tradition. Because of that, the autochthonous animals and vegetation are being lost. The project’s aim is the recuperation of the essence of this fragile area, bringing back the biodiversity. Thanks to the different ideas which will bring back the area to its origins, the landscape will attract a different type of visitors what would treat the area with the respect that deserves. After studying and doing researches about how the area used to be, the solution to re-activate the area of Catarroja consists in a serial of long term actions.

Those actions will consist in slowly switching those destructive nowadays activities for those which will create a passive relation with the area and so will bring it back to how it used to be.

Each action will belong to one phase. So when we will reach the third phase, in twenty years, Catarroja would have again the potential that used to be in 1950. Some of these actions will be relocating the current parking area to the entrance of the area, so the empty surface that would leave behind can be used as a landscape interpretation area.

SECOND PHASE

Those zones where nowadays are used for picnics and barbecues, will be used for re-activating the port and piers. Also, a museum and a restaurant about the fishing and rice activities in Catarroja are proposed.

The second part of my thesis project was about designing a building that would connect somehow the nature of the new green lung and the industrial activity of the city of Stuttgart. To succeed, the main project is divided in two other projects with different growing speeds:

COMPARATIVE OF SCALES BETWEEN DIFFERENT CIRCULAR SHAPE BUILDINGS IN FLOOR PLAN

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM: STRUCTURAL TREES TO HOLD THE ROOF

— A metal 200 m diameter length permanent roof, held by a mesh of serial tree shape pillars. — Under it a center for future mobilities for the house Mercedes-Benz will be designed. These buildings will have a flexible structure which will allow all the buildings to be modified on the same speed as the society and so the transportation will evolve.

The point of holding the roof using this system, is for not losing the infinite movements that the park allows. In this way, the roof gives a covered area for new activities. The shape of the pillars is motivated by the relation between the architecture and the trees of the park.
