Year 5 2013 22/900 Master Project:

Overview Building on the study of the Scottish Small towns from An Comann: 50 Small Towns in Scotland (2008) and Under the Mircroscope: 20 Small Towns in Scotland (2009) by Urban Design Studies Unit, University of Strathclyde, this reseach seeks to assess the possibility of introducing agricultural within the urban form of these small towns.

UP TO 60% OF SUBURBAN L A N D L I E S FA L L O W A N D U N DERUTILISED.

To assess such potential, the analysis looks into the existing open spaces and built environment of these small towns, specifically the residential neighbourhooods. The introduction of food production into residential areas makes logical sense as it reduces the supply chains by shortening the distance between the domestic food supply and its demand. Hence, a graphical representation is done to show the common patterns of the relationship between the residential neighbourhood typologies. The town’s population access to healthy food is also investigated; outlined by their access to main food destination within walking distance. The study will be imperative to formulate a case for the potential urban form of these small towns to support food production and the associated benefits of doing so. With the decrease in natural resources, there is a global urgency to formulate strategies which will encourage self-sufficiency and minimise any impact and need for more natural resources. The increase in food production within the Scottish small towns will hopefully then be a big step towards addressing this pressing issue.

Year 5 2013 AB 964 Design Studies 5A: Thesis Inception: (un)Certain Future of: Real Urbanism Overview Coal mining was once one of the most prominent industry in Scotland until the decline accelerated in the final decades of the 20th century. Until then, it was the driving force that fuelled many industries. Major industries are directly/indiretly dependant on coal as their principal source of energy. Throughout the county, the physical evidence of the industry continues to disappear from our landscapes. For many people, the massive contribution of the coal miners to the economic, political and cultural wealth of Scotland remains unrecognised. The study area, Netherthird, were developed as satelit neighbourhood of Cumnock. It originally was to rehouse the miners from various miners’ rows. Consequently, Netherthird overtime has grown separately from Cumnock. The proposed masterplan for Netherthird focuses on 3 main vision: Images from ‘Sprawl Repair Manual’

1. Recollecting memory of the past, creating identity and meaning to the community. Derived from extensive historical reseach into Cumnock and its proximities, it is hope that the better understanding of what happened in the past will provides information of former events & stories to be inteprated into architecture and urban intervention 2. Relocating local neighbourhood center and introducing new lateral connection Existing local neighbourhood center are in deprived state and not serving the whole community. The whole area are disconnected by high speed road and cul-de-sac, a very typical sub-urban condition. 3. Repackaged Netherthird The developmemnt of Netherthird have been on halt since the mining days and alternative have to be brought up to curb the problems. There is a pressing need to re-examine the planning policy of suburban settlements, to rethink rural spaces and capitalise on its assets. The masterplan proposes that agricultural, ecologial and social development should be developed simultaneously, with the aim to create a well balanced live/work environment.

Park - Kelvingrove Park

Year 4 2012 AB 418 Design Studies 4B: To Care - Bath House

Overview

‘Water is the driving force of all nature’ - Leonardo da Vinci

Public Baths originated from a communal need for cleanliness, becoming incorporated into the social system as meeting places. Bathing is the washing or cleansing of the body, with its principle purpose for personal hygiene. With the advancement of civilization, people has forgotten the original function of the building. Instead, it is used more of a leisure centre nowadays. Apart from providing the necessity health facilities to the public, the ambition of this project is to revive the social and spiritual function of bath house since the day the Roman Bath. Hence, the site for the bath house was carefully selected on a sinking contour to create a ‘cave-like’ atmosphere. Taking aspiration from the Roman Bath layout, the ‘transitional spaces’ is placed strategically in between public/semi-public/private spaces. Such spatial arrangement is important to govern the necesary privacy for the fact that the bath house is located in the middle of a famous park in Glasgow. The bath house further extend its reach to the river, incoporating some of the bathing function in the Kelvin river. Kelvin river was once relied heaviliy by the people, and was heavily contaminated during the industrial revolution. However, the condition of the river are improving, and it has witnessed varieties of wildlife returning back to their habitats. During summer, the river will be a casual bathing ground for the public. People would also use it as a cold bath in the spring and autumn season.

Park - Kelvingrove Park

Year 4 2012 AB 418 Design Studies 4A: To Care - Hospice

Overview The project concerns the design of a Young Adults (16-25 years old) Hospice, to be sited on the edge of Kelvingrove Park. Hospices rely on their architecture to do a significant amount of the passive palliative work, setting the scene for people going through a traumatic experience. The building must feel safe and welcoming. They need to be small, and domestic in scale. The architecture should exude hope. Site is chosen at the edge of Kelvingrove park next to Kelvin River. The building is located in the midst of trees, creating buffer from the city while not entirely disconnected from it. The sound of flowing river is proven medically to be benificial to the patient emotion. The building is designed in a hierarchical of public - private to accomodate different types of patients and visitors so that they will find their own intimate spaces in the building and spend their last moment of life together.

Basketball: Proposed

baskeball tower

Year 3 2011 AB 313 Integrated Studies 3C: To Play - Basketball Tower

Overview The project will be based on the verb ‘to Play’ and shall explore the themes of ‘performance’ and ‘the city’. Students are required to choose a passion of own, and develop that interest into an architecture. I’ve chosen ‘basketball’ as my passion. Basketball involved alot of movement and is considerably physical game. The culture of street basketball will certainly befits the city life and its unique characteristics of informality and dynamic movement will be the central theme of the project. The chosen site poses few issues. It has a frontage facing the main street and rear side facing a back lane, makes it quite a contradicting site with a limited builtup land. A basketball tower is proposed due to the restriction of the site. Taking advantage of the backstreet atmosphere, street basketball culture is fused with the building. The ground floor will be a full size basketball court and available to the public. There are additional function of gym, retail and seating area. The 2 other half size court will be located on the highest floor of the builidng. Semi-transparent material is used to reveal the activity inside the building in a subtle manner, while submerging itself into the everyday life of the city.

6_ To Live - Urban Housing

Year 3 2010 AB 311 Integrated Studies 3A Design: To Live - Urban Housing Overview Site was previously a previously meat market, it has laid vacant since the market was demolished in 2005. A masterplan of urban housing will be prepared by group of students. Each student is then expected to individually develop a multi-use urban housing for proposed user groups. As for my part, student acccomodation is proposed as part of the masterplan. Most of the private student accomodations are devoid of any social facilities. The layout are isolated and discourage any interaction among students. Taking that as point of departure, extra attention have been given on these functions. Library, cafe, and outdoor spaces will be provided alongside with different types of student’s accomodation.
