Sotogrande acoge la Copa Rives del Campeonato de Andalucía de ORC El sábado, si el tiempo lo permite, se disputará una regata costera entre Sotogrande y Gibraltar. El Real Club Marítimo estima una participación de medio centenar de barcos R. M. SOTOGRANDE.- Sotogrande acoge este fin de semana la XV Regata Copa Rives, prueba puntuable para el Campeonato de Andalucía de Cruceros ORC. El Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande (RCMS) ejerce de anfitrión y desde este pasado jueves ya está recibiendo a los participantes del que es el evento más importante del año para esta entidad. Está previsto que alrededor de medio centenar de embarcaciones tomen parte en esta regata que se disputa entre el viernes 15 y el domingo 17 de agosto. Un ejemplo más de la apuesta de Sotogrande por la vela como deporte náutico y como polo de atracción para que el turismo siga creciendo en la urbanización sanroqueña. Miembros del RCMS estuvieron durante toda la jornada del jueves, desde las diez de la mañana hasta las ocho de la tarde, ocupándose del registro de las participaciones y de entregar a los regatistas las instrucciones de la prueba. El plazo de inscripción se cerró el viernes por la mañana y

a continuación se celebró una reunión de patrones previa al arranque de las pruebas, tanto de ORC como de monotipos. El responsable de Comunicación del RCMS, Javier Molina, explicó a este periódico que la XV Regata Copa Sotogrande Rives supone lo “máximo” este verano para la entidad ya que vienen embarcaciones de toda Andalucía atraídas por las ca-

racterísticas del campo de regatas. A falta del cierre definitivo de las inscripciones, el RCMS barajaba la presencia de unas 50 embarcaciones, una veintena de ellas ORC y el resto de J80 y Tom28Max, las dos flotas propias del club. “Estamos muy contentos de poder acoger la XV edición de esta regata pese a los evidentes ajustes que se han tenido que realizar por la

crisis. Los ORC puntúan para el Campeonato de Andalucía. Además, a esta regata viene gente muy aficionada a la náutica deseosa de navegar por el Estrecho”, manifestó Molina. La XV Copa Rives consta de tres días de competición. Cada jornada se disputan tres mangas, de 4 millas náuticas cada una. El campo de regatas se monta en función del viento; es decir, si es poniente o levante. La previsión del viento para la regata es de levante moderado. Las embarcaciones salen siempre en contra del viento para poder ceñir. Una

vez alcanzan la boya, le dan la vuelta para encarar el jennaker (globo). Cada manga es de dos subidas a la boya y los participantes tendrán que tener muy bien estudiada su estrategia debido a las corrientes en Sotogrande, según señaló Molina. Dentro de los cruceros ORC hay tres categorías en función de las dimensiones de la embarcación (de 8 a 10 metros, de 10 a 12, y a partir de 12 metros). El vencedor será el que sume más puntos entre las nueve mangas. Así, habrá un ganador absoluto y luego por clases para compensar las diferencias entre los monotipos y los ORC. que el tiempo lo permita. Si el jurado lo estima oportuno, las embarcaciones zarparán desde Sotogrande hasta cerca del aeropuerto de Gibraltar en un trazado costero de dificultad pero que saca todo el frenesí náutico de las tripulaciones. nizada por el RCMS junto a la Federación Andaluza de Vela, la Junta de Andalucía y el Ayuntamiento de San Roque. Según recoge la Federación Andaluza de Vela en su página web, el Campeonato de Andalucía 2014 de Clase Crucero dispone de cuatro regatas. Hasta la fecha se han disputado dos: la de abril dentro de la XI Semana Náutica Costa del Sol celebrada en Benalmádena, y la de la semana pasada dentro de la XVII Regata Juan de la Cosa en el Puer-

to de Santa María. Sotogrande supone así la tercera escala del campeonato, que finalizará la semana que viene con la XXX Semana Náutica de El Puerto de Santa María. La clasificación del Campeonato de Andalucía de Cruceros está encabezada, tras las dos primeras regatas, por el yate ‘Hospitales Nisa-Alkevir’, de la tripulación de Ramón Rodríguez Morales del Club de Punta Umbría. • 15th Sotogrande Rives Cup

Royal Maritime Club welcomes the 15th Sotogrande Rives Cup R. M. SOTOGRANDE.- This weekend, Sotogrande welcomes the 15th Rives Cup, which counts toward the Andalusian Cruiser Championships ORC. The Royal Maritime Club of Sotogrande (RCMS) shall play host to the competition and has been welcoming participants since last Thursday to the most important event of the year for this association. It is estimated that around fifty vessels shall take part in this regatta, which shall be held from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th of August. This event further reinforces Sotogrande´s commitment to sailing as a nautical sport and a centre of attraction for tourists, guaranteeing the growth of this residential estate of San Roque. RCMS members were present all day Thursday, from ten in the morning until eight in the afternoon, recording all donations and issuing sailors with the trial instructions. The registration period closed Friday morning and subsequently a meeting was held for owners and coaches before the trials were launched for both ORCs and one-design boats.

The Head of the RCMS Communication, Javier Molina, explained to this newspaper that the 15th Sotogrande Rives Cup means a “great deal” to this entity this summer as boats are arriving from across the whole of Andalusia, attracted by the standards of this regatta. Just before the registration period closed, the RCMS estimated the presence of around 50 boats, 20 of which ORC and the rest J80 and Tom28Max, the two fleets belonging to the club. “We are delighted to be hosting the 15th edition of this regatta, despite the evident cutbacks we have had to make due to the crisis. The ORC counts towards the Andalusia Championship. Furthermore, many nautical fans visit us with the wish to sail down the Strait”, states Molina. The 15th Rives Cup comprises three competition days. Each day 3 races are held, each consisting of 4 nautical miles. The area for the regatta is set up depending on wind-direc-

tion; that is to say if it is westerly or easterly. The vessels always sail against the wind so they may beat windward. Once they reach the buoy, they must turn round so they are facing the jennaker (balloon). Each race consists of two laps around the buoy. Participants must prepare their strategies very carefully due to the currents in Sotogrande, as Molina points out. There are three categories for ORC cruisers depending on the measurements of the vessel (from 8-10 metres, 10-12m and from 12 metres and longer). The winner of the regatta shall be the participant with the most points after the nine races. Therefore, there will be an overall winner and a winner per category in order to compensate the differences between the one-design boats and the ORC. cup when the coast regatta shall be held, weather permitting. If the jury considers it to be safe, the vessels shall set sail from Sotogrande and travel up to Gibraltar Airport following the difficult coastline, that requires the help of all the crew on board. The coast regatta shall substitute the three races to be held on Saturday if they cannot go ahead. The yacht ‘Hospitales NisaAlkevir’, belonging to the crew Ramón Rodríguez Morales of the Punta Umbría Club Umbria, currently holds first place in the Andalusian Cruiser Championship. In second place is the boat ‘Sea Wolf of Southampton’, belonging to David La Tham Clocktower of the RCMS and is followed by ‘Uxama’ belonging to Pablo Valenzuela Sainz of the Royal Meditterranean Club of Malaga; ‘Amor Fati’ belonging to Rafael Ruiz Ramírez of the Benalmádena Maritime Club and ‘Titicaca’ belonging to Graham Cox, also of the RCMS. The current ranking shows the great role the fleet belonging to Sotogrande is playing, with two vessels amongst the top five. SOTOGRANDE.- Las canchas de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club vivieron el pasado martes 12 de agosto una de las mejores tardes de lo que se lleva del 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo. En liza los dos puestos para la final de la Copa de Plata Silex de alto handicap, que finalmente se adjudicaron los equipos Valiente y Dos Lunas Espirito Santo tras vencer en sus semifinales a Ellerston y Ayala Polo Team, respectivamente. La jornada prometía por el nivel de los equipos en contienda y pronto las gradas se llenaron de espectadores para disfrutar del espectáculo pese al calor con viento de poniente. En la primera semifinal se enfrentaron Valiente y Ellerston, dos de los conjuntos con mejor cartel del torneo. El equipo estadounidense, del patrón Bob Jornayvaz, cuenta en sus filas con el mejor jugador del mundo, el argentino Adolfo Cambiaso, y ya se ha alzado con la Copa de Bronce Isolas este verano en Sotogrande. Valiente está invicto en este torneo gracias al juego que están desplegando los perfectos escuderos de Cambiaso, Santi Torres y Santi Laborde. Delante tenían al temido conjunto de Ellerston, que cuenta con dos jugadores handicap 10 como son los hermanos argentinos Gonzalo y Facundo

Valiente, campeón de la Copa de Bronce, permanece invicto en el presente torneo en Sotogrande Pieres. El equipo australiano llega además a Sotogrande con la responsabilidad de defender título al llevarse el año pasado las Copas de Oro y Plata. El partido tuvo un inicio vibrante y a los pocos segundos del primer chukker Facundo Pieres abría el marcador con una jugada individual donde demostró su gran maestría manejando la bocha con su taco. Pero este comienzo no dejó de ser un espejismo porque poco después Valiente le daba la vuelta al marcador y tomaba ventaja, que ya no perdió en todo el encuentro. Los de Cambiaso controlaron el partido en todo momento tras abrir brecha en el segundo chukker, poniendo al final el marcador en el definitivo 16 a 10. Contemplar un partido desde las bambalinas de la cancha de Los Pinos es una experiencia única. Detrás de una de las porterías cada equipo dispone de su palenque. Asimismo, junto a estos campamentos para la ‘batalla’ están las caballerizas, donde los cerca de veinte animales por equipo son preparados para el encuentro por los petiseros (ayudantes de los jugadores). zona es similar al del campo de juego. Los petiseros no paran de calentar a los caballos para que estén dispuestos para el partido. Cada jugador cambia de animal de cinco a seis veces por encuentro. El caballo saliente es refrescado en la cuadra en un continuo ir y venir tras la zona de seguridad del arco. A la finalización del sexto y último chukker, los cuatro jugadores de Valiente no podían ocultar su satisfacción tras destronar a Ellerston. La primera en felicitar a Cambiaso fue su

La atención se desviaba entonces a la cancha IV de Los Pinos, donde Ayala Polo Team y Dos Lunas Espirito Santo se jugaban el otro puesto de la final de la Copa de Plata. La segunda semifinal contaba con numerosos atractivos, entre ellos la contienda entre los dos equipos españoles de alto handicap. Ayala, que también juega bajo la bandera fi-

SOTOGRANDE.- Last Tuesday the 12th of August, the Los Pinos Courts of the Santa Maria Polo Club experienced one of the best afternoons of polo ever in this year’s 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament. Two places for the final of the high handicap Silex Silver Cup were at stake, which finally went to the teams of Valiente and Dos Lunas Espirito Santo after overcoming Ellerston and Ayala Polo Team respectively in their semi-final matches. The day looked promising thanks to the high level of the teams and the stands quickly filled up with spectators read to enjoy the show, despite the heat of the westerly winds. In the first of the semi-finals, Valiente and Ellerston, two of the teams with the best reputation of the whole tournament, came up against each other. The American team belonging to Bob Jornayvaz had the best polo player in the world in its ranks, the Argentinean Adolfo Cambiaso, who has already walked away with the Bronze Isolas Cup this summer in Sotogrande. Valiente remains undefeated in this tournament thanks to the defending skills of Cambiaso, Santi Torres and Santi Laborde. Faced with the feared Ellerston team, featuring two players of handicap 10 known as the Argentinean brothers Gonzalo

Valiente, champions of the Bronze Cup, remain undefeated at this year’s tournament and Facundo Pieres. The Australian team arrived at Sotogrande with the responsibility of defending their title on their shoulders, as they were last year’s winners of the Gold and Silver Cups. The game got off to a lively start and within a matter of seconds into the first chukker, Facundo Pieres got the Scoreboard rolling with his individual skills where he demonstrated his expertise with his mallet. Yet the early celebrations on the part of Ellerston were short lived as Valiente soon turned the scoreboard around and took the advantage, not losing everything in their encounter. Cambiaso’s team took control of the game just after the second chukker got underway, leaving the final score at a definitive 16-10. Watching the games from the side-line tents of Los Pinos court is a once in a life time opportunity. Behind each one of goal posts, the fields for each of the teams can be found. Likewise, these areas are home to the stables, where around twenty animals per team are prepared for the upcoming matches by their “petiseros” (the

polo player´s horse workers). The hustle and bustle behind the scenes is not unlike that on the pitch. The horse workers ensure that the horses are fully warmed up and prepared for the game. Each player changes horse around five or six times per game. Horses are then cooled down in the stables and come and go via the safety area. After the sixth and final chukker came to an end, the four Valiente players could not hide their satisfaction after defeating Ellerston. The first to

The second semi-final was filled with several exciting moments, amongst which the dispute between the two high handicap Spanish teams was a highlight. Ayala, which also plays under the Philippine flag, also has a top ten player amongst its ranks; David Pelón Stirling. Dos Lunas Espirito Santo and Ayala Polo Team put on an excellent show with two completely varied parts, concluding with a very tight concluding minutes.

El motor de la cancha Y.O. SOTOGRANDE.- Miles de personas visitan cada año las canchas del Santa María Polo Club con motivo del Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo. Pero solo unos cuantos tienen posibilidad de visitar las cuadras, el lugar donde descansan, comen y se recuperan los más de 1.200 caballos que este año han llegado para conseguir uno de los trofeos que están en liza. A estos animales solo se les ve en el campo, no alzan las copas, pero deberían, pues forman parte fundamental del juego junto con el polista. En las cuadras de Puente de Hierro, propiedad del Santa María Polo Club, nos recibe Gabriel Gómez, responsable de que todo lo que ocurra en este bonito y silencioso lugar salga a la perfección. “Ahora tenemos unos 180 caballos. Los equipos que disputan el torneo suelen llegar cuando termina la temporada en Inglaterra, a finales de julio. Y si no la han jugado, lo hacen un mes antes”, nos cuenta Gabriel mientras caminamos por las diferentes instalaciones que albergan las cuadras. En cada una de ellas podemos ver a estos animales, la

mayoría tapados para procurarles el mayor confort, o con vendajes en las patas para facilitarles descanso tras el partido. Las cuadras que están va-

cías nos dicen que los caballos están en la cancha. “Cada equipo trae una media de unos 40 caballos, aunque los del Alto Handicap pueden traer hasta

el doble. Y cada polista, si juega en la máxima categoría, puede llevar hasta dos petiseros por caballo”, añade el responsable de Puente de Hierro.

El petisero es, según nos explica, el nombre que recibe la persona encargada de trabajar con el caballo. Es el nexo entre el jugador y el animal, el que controla su salud, su estado general, sus lesiones, y quien comparte el día a día con el animal. Mientras paseamos por los cuadras, Gabriel Gómez saluda a los petiseros que van llegando, bromea con ellos recurriendo al argot argentino, pues todos proceden de ese país, y nos informan que los caballos que salieron a jugar están a punto de llegar. “Son los primeros que empiezan a trabajar. Sobre las seis de la mañana ya están dando de comer a los caballos. Luego salen a entrenarlos, y si hay partido los preparan y los trasladan. Ellos lo hacen todo, los llevan a la cancha, los ensillan... El polista solo tiene que montar”, comenta Gabriel Gómez. Junto a los petiseros, cada equipo trae herradores, veterinarios y fisioterapeutas, tanto para el caballo como para los jugadores de polo.

y.o . / sotogrande.- Gabriel Gómez, encargado de las cuadras de Puente de Hierro, creció en una finca y durante toda su vida ha estado ligado al mundo del caballo. Conoce a la perfección a estos animales, y durante los tres meses de verano trabaja sin descanso. Aprovechamos su experiencia para que nos cuente cómo son y cómo viven. “El caballo de competición suele pesar entre 400 y 500 kilos. Son cruzados, hijos de caballos ingleses y argentinos; y son criados, seleccionados y elegidos únicamente para competir en el polo. Su entrenamiento comienza a los seis años, y puede estar en competición, si no tiene ninguna lesión, hasta los 15”, añade. El entrenamiento y doma de uno de estos animales empieza como todos, iniciando el contacto entre el animal y su entrenador, para luego montarlo. “Lo primero que hacemos es educarlo, que nos haga caso, que vaya haciendo lo que queremos. Una vez que conseguimos esto, le enseñamos el taco y la bola, para que se vayan familiarizando. Hay algunos animales que

Sin embargo, que juegue en la máxima categoría no quiere decir que sea el mejor animal. “No existe el caballo perfecto. Es muy difícil que un mismo animal lo tenga todo. The driving-force behind every player on the courts Y.O. SOTOGRANDE.- Thousands of people flock to the Courts of the Santa Maria Polo Club every year to visit the found Land Rover International Polo Tournament. However, only a lucky few get the opportunity to visit the stables, where more 1,200 horses that are ready to compete for one of the trophies at stake, rest, eat and sleep. These animals found on the playing courts are not awarded the winning cups, when we take into account the crucial role they play in the game along with the polo player, perhaps they should. Gabriel Gómez welcomes us to the Puente de Hierro stables, property of Santa Maria Polo Club. He is in charge ensuring that all the horses that come and go from this peaceful and pleasant place with no problems whatsoever. “We are currently caring for 180 horses. The teams playing in the tournament usually arrive when the season comes to an end in England, around the end of July. Sometimes if they haven’t played, they come the month before.” Gabriel explains as he leads us around the various parts of the stable.

In each stable, a horse is housed. Their heads are covered to ensure their comfort, and they have bandages on their legs so they may rest ea-

horses with them, yet High Handicap teams can come with more than double this number. Each polo player, if they play in the highest category,

can also bring two horse workers per horse,” the Puente de Hierro Manager adds. “Petisero” (an Argentinean word for Horse worker) he explains to us, is the name given to workers responsible for caring for the horse, providing a bridge between the player and the animal. They manage the animal’s health, their general wellbeing, any injuries and spend days with it. As we wander through the stables, Gabriel Gómez waves at the Horse workers as they arrive, joking with them in Argentinean slang, as they all are natives of said country. They inform us that the horses that were out on the courts should be back any minute. “The “petiseros” are the first to start work every day. At six o’clock every morning they arrive to feed the horses. Then they normally take them out to train, prepare them for a match and take them to the court. They do everything, make sure they are at the court on time, saddle them…All the polo player has to do is jump on”, states Gabriel Gómez.

Y.O. / sotogrande.- Gabriel Gómez, the Puente de Hierro Stable Manager, grew up on a farm and has been deeply involved in the equestrian world his entire life. He knows these animals to perfection, and for the three months of summer he works non-stop with them. We take advantage of his great experience to ask him about these animals and how they live. “Competition horses must weight between 400 and 500 kilos. Some are crosses, the offspring of English and Argentinian horses; and are bred, selected and chosen exclusively to compete in the polo world. Their training normally begins when they are six years old, and they may take part in competitions until they are 15, if they are not injured” he adds. The training and taming of an animal like this begins like all; initiating contact between the animal and its trainer so they may ride. “The first thing we do is teach the horse to listen to us, to obey us and do what we want it to do. Once we achieve this, we introduce the mallet and ball so they may

LA VERDAD SOTOGRANDE.- Agosto se anima en Sotogrande y el 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo es, como cada año, punto de encuentro para caras conocidas. Esta semana numerosos famosos se han dejado ver por Santa María Polo Club para disfrutar de los partidos de la Copa de Plata Silex. Cari Lapique y su hija Caritina Goyanes visitaron el torneo acompañadas de Carlos Goyanes. Se acercaron directamente desde la playa para ver a un jugador amigo que disputaba un partido por la tarde. Tras el encuentro aprovecharon para realizar diversas comprar por las numerosas tiendas que se disponen con ocasión del torneo en la zona de Los Pinos. La presencia de Amaia Salamanca también despertó una

gran expectación. La joven actriz llegó acompañada de su pareja y padre de su hijo, Rosauro Varó, y el empresario Javier Hidalgo, que les invitó al palco de Air Europa. Allí pudieron disfrutar de una tarde de polo rodeados de amigos, en un ambiente relajado y divertido. Más tarde se unió al grupo Alfonso de Borbón, que no dudó en acercarse a saludarles, aprovechando que pasa unos días de vacaciones en Sotogrande. La tarde, animada y bulliciosa, atrajo a otros rostros conocidos como Verónica Hidalgo, que aprovechó para realizar varias compras en el Polo Shopping Village, ya un clásico de las tardes veraniegas. Verónica, que se ha trasladado a vivir a Sotogrande, tiene previsto desarrollar su propio negocio. Mientras tanto nos confesó que cada día es más aficionada al

deporte del polo y no deja de perderse muchos de los partidos que se celebran a lo largo del verano. Sonia Ferrer y Álvaro Muñoz Escassi también han estado esta semana en Santa María Polo Club. Siempre en actitud muy cariñosa, como una pareja fuertemente unida y consolidada, Sonia y Álvaro estuvieron acompañados por Gonzalo, hermano de Álvaro, y su hijo pequeño, pasando la tarde entre sus conocidos y disfrutando de los partidos de semifinales que se estaban celebrando en las canchas. This week, numerous famous faces have dropped in at Santa Maria to make the most of the games of the Silex Silver Cup. Cari Lapique and her daughter Caritina Goyanes also visited the tournament along with Carlos Goyanes. They came straight from the beach to see a friend of theirs play in an afternoon polo game. After the match, they took the chance to go shopping at the various stores that have been set up in light of the tournament in Los Pinos. Amaia Salamanca´s presence also did not go unnoticed. The young actress came with Rosauro Varó, her partner and the father of her son along with the businessman Javier Hidalgo, who invited them to Air Europa box. There, they were able to enjoy a perfect afternoon of polo surrounded by their friends, in a fun and relaxing environment.

Later on, Alfonso de Borbón joined the group and did not hesitate to greet them all whilst he made the most of his holiday in Sotogrande. The hustle and bustle of the afternoon also drew the attention of other well-known faces, such as Verónica Hidalgo, who took the opportunity to go shopping in the Polo Shopping Village on said summer afternoon. Véronica, who has now moved to live in Sotogrande has plans to open up her own business. Meanwhile, she confessed her ever growing love for the sport of polo. Sonia Ferrer and Álvaro Muñoz Escassi have also been spotted at the Santa Maria Polo Club this week. Always a very loving pair, this strongly linked couple were accompanied by Gonzolo, Álvaro´s brother and his younger son, and they spent the afternoon with friends enjoying the semi-final matches held on the courts. Álvaro, a great fan of polo, and a polo player of many years, is a member and collaborator of the polo brand Valecuatro.

La presencia de los jinetes y caballos participantes generó una gran expectación entre los abundantes bañistas que se encontraban en esos momentos en la zona. El teniente de alcalde delegado del Valle del Guadiaro, Juan Roca, participó en la entrega de trofeos, y subrayó la importancia que tiene para el municipio de San Roque que se organicen en la zona este tipo de eventos deportivos, porque sirven para ofrecer un atractivo más a los turistas. También destacó la peculiaridad de este tipo de competiciones, en la que vence el jinete que consigue llegar a la meta primero con su caballo en mejores condiciones físicas (tras distintos controles veterinarios). El Raid, también llamado enduro, es una disciplina ecuestre en la cual se pone a prueba la velocidad, habilidad y la resistencia física y psicológica de caballo y jinete, ya que ambos deben recorrer grandes distancias en un día, a través de los más diversos terrenos y contra el tiempo. La prueba de iniciación disputada en Guadalquitón fue de 22 kilómetros. Para ello el jinete debe tener la capacidad de dosificar el esfuerzo de su caballo y llevar un ritmo adecuado durante la prueba, pues al finalizar la carrera los caballos son inspeccionados por veterinarios, se le toman las pulsaciones y el jinete podría ser eliminado si está sobre lo permitido.

Este Sotogrande no sale en la tele Joaquín Santaella, periodista y escritor, cuenta en un libro cómo es la sociedad que, durante 50 años, se ha ido creando en la urbanización. En su opinión, ha sido capaz de hacerse con un carácter propio y diverso

onversar con Joaquín Santaella es charlar amigablemente con un compañero de profesión. Periodista y escritor, es autor del libro Cartas de Sotogrande, una publicación que tiene como origen la correspondencia epistolar que Santaella mantuvo con una amiga, que se prolongó durante años, y en cuyas cartas trataba de explicarle cómo era la vida en Sotogrande. “Las cartas son la base del libro, pero durante casi dos años he estado trabajando para convertirlo en algo que yo he llamado un “relataje”, un término que me he inventado para describir algo que está entre el relato y el reportaje”, cuenta el escritor. Desde el principio de la entrevista, el periodista deja claro que quien busque en este libro personajes, anécdotas o crónica histórica no los va a encontrar. “No he querido hacer un libro sobre la historia de la urbanización, ni un anecdotario, sino un relato literario. Y aunque tiene un poco de todo eso, y es un relato amable, salpicado con una fina ironía, el enfoque es netamente literario”, añade el autor. Veinte años de residencia en Sotogrande -a la que califica de “cosa rara” por no ser ni pueblo ni ciudad- le han otorgado el conocimiento suficiente para hablar, de una forma amena y natural, de cómo es el día a día en la urbanización. “Este es el aspecto que más me interesaba de todos. En Cartas de Sotogrande no hay fotos, los personajes no son protagonistas, sino que lo es la urbanización en sí misma”. El libro está lleno de las experiencias que Santaella ha vivido y vive en primera persona. “Aquí, la vida social la cultivas solo si quieres. La estructura que tiene la urbanización te permite decidir o no si quieres encontrarte con la gente. Pero lo más sorprendente de todo es, en mi opinión, que pese a todo Sotogrande ha conseguido hacerse con un carácter propio. Y este carácter es el resultado de la mezcla entre los municipios de alrededor y el aporte internacional de quienes residen en Sotogrande. Creo que el Campo de Gibraltar se ha visto favorecido por Sotogrande y viceversa. Y eso ha provocado esta sociedad tan peculiar”, explica el periodista. Según comenta, la manifestación más clara de esta mezcla entre Sotogrande y la cultura y la historia de los municipios de alrededor se

“La vida social la tienes si quieres. Puedes decidir si encontrarte o no con la gente” pone de relieve en la procesión marítima que se celebra con motivo de la Virgen del Carmen. “Ese día, cuando la Virgen sale al mar, lo mismo te encuentras a un pescador que a un yate con una jequesa haciendo fotos. Esta es una de las pruebas más claras de que lo local, lo internacional y el factor lujo conviven perfectamente”, manifiesta Santaella. El libro, que ha sido presentado hace tan solo unos días, tiene como cometido intentar desterrar el tópico de que

Y con todo ello pretendo eliminar el cliché de que Sotogrande es únicamente lo que se ve en la televisión durante el mes de agosto. No es solo eso, pues después de medio siglo, ha sido capaz de generar una sociedad propia y

The other side of Sotogrande Joaquín Santaella, a journalist and writer, tells us about the evolution of the society of this residential estate over 50 years in his book. In his opinion, the society has developed in its very own diverse and unique way

alking to Joaquín Santaella is like chatting to a friend in the field. A journalist and a writer, Santaella is the author of the book Cartas de Sotogrande (“Letters of Sotogrande”), which takes its roots in the epistolary correspondence between the author and a friend over several years, describing life in Sotogrande. “The letters form the backbone of the book, however for two years now I have been working on converting it into something which I call a “relataje”; a term I have invented in order to describe something between a story and a report”, the author explains. From the very start of the interview, the journalist made it very clear that readers seeking characters, anecdotes or historical accounts, shall not find what they are looking for. “What I had in mind was not to write a book or a collection of anecdotes about the history of the residential estate, but a literary story. And even though it includes a little bit of everything, it is a pleasant story with hints of irony, focusing mainly on literature” the author adds. Twenty years living in the Sotogrande residential estate - a place which he describes as “strange” as it is neither a village nor a town - has provided him with sufficient knowledge to naturally discuss day to day life on the residential estate. “This is the aspect that draws my attention the most. In the “Cartas de Sotogrande” there are no photos, the characters are not the protagonists but the residential estate itself is. Th e b o o k i s b r i m m i n g w i t h Santaella´s personal experiences in Sotogrande. “Here you may structure your social life in the way you wish. The lay out of the residential estate means you may decide for yourself if you wish to bump into certain people. However, the most surprising fact of all in my opinion is that, despite everything, Sotogrande has managed to develop a personality of its own. This personality is a result of the combination of the surrounding towns and the international input from those living in Sotogrande. I think that the Campo de Gibralata is favoured by Sotogrande and viceversa, and thus this strange society has emerged” the journalist explains. According to him, the clearest example of this mix of culture and history between Sotogrande and

Throughout the pages of the book, the author refers to around 50 individuals, some of which he writes about under their real name and other with fictitious names, in line with their express content and in the aim of conserving their privacy. “As the story develops, the history of Sotogrande unravels along with the experience of its residents.” His main aim is to put an end to the cliché that Sotogrande is only that which is seen on the TV throughout the month of August. Furthermore, after half a century the residential estate has developed a diverse and unique society”,

Exhibición de pintura al sonido de un gran piano de cola Mosayko Arte Música y la Asociación Cultural Sotogrande traen una puesta en escena conocida como El reino de las musas, en la que un artista pintará al ritmo de la música interpretada por un pianista

l colectivo Mosayko Arte Música y la Asociación Cultural Sotogrande han convocado una nueva cita con el arte y la música para el próximo 21 de agosto. Se trata de una puesta en escena que va a sorprender a todos, resultado de un proyecto de Pedro Monty, conocido como El reino de las musas, en el que arte y música se fusionan. No es la primera vez que Mosayko, presidida por Carmen Jiménez, y Sotogrande llevan a cabo un acto de este tipo, pero en esta ocasión se han superado ya que habrá una exhibición de pintura que estará acompañada por el sonido de un gran piano de cola. Concretamente un Steinway, cedido por la familia Hinves. “Aún no me creo que vayamos a traer un piano de cola hasta aquí. Estoy muy contenta de haberlo conseguido”, cuenta Carmen, quien añade que esta cita estará abierta a la participación de diferentes artistas locales que practican distintas disciplinas. Habrá una parte del programa en el que se exhibirán las obras de los artistas de Mosayko; y en la exhibición, será el pintor y artista plástico José Manuel Gamero, quien realice su obra al ritmo del pianista y compositor Pedro Gutiérrez, conocido como “Monty”. En esta importante cita del verano, ambas entidades culturales cuentan con la colaboración de Pinna Fidelis, que ofrecerá una cata de vino; y Extra Natural, de Andrea L. Rafetta, que será la entidad encargada de servir el catering. El espectáculo pictórico-musical de Ars CreAtiva 21 será presentado en Alemania el próximo otoño. La romería de La Palma, Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía L.V. SOTOGRANDE.- Cerca de 40.000 personas, según fuentes oficiales, pasaron ayer por la playa de El Rinconcillo para asistir a los distintos actos que, con motivo de la festividad de la Virgen de la Palma, tienen lugar en Algeciras cada 15 de agosto. La imagen, sumergida durante el resto del año, sale del mar en una de las procesiones marineras más emocionantes y singulares de la costa gaditana y andaluza. Es la romería marítima, que en 2014 ha sido declarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. La virgen, que se encuentra sumergida a unos 15 metros de profundidad en una cueva en las cercanías de la Bahía de Algeciras, permanece durante el resto del año bajo el control de los buzos, que son los encargados del mantenimiento y la seguridad de la talla, limpiarla de algas y evitar que las corrientes la desplacen de su refugio. Esta romería suele comenzar al alba, cuando los barcos engalanados salen del puerto de Algeciras y se adentran en la Bahía para que los submarinistas del club de buceo El Estrecho rescaten la imagen. Una talla de 1,10 metros de altura, realizada por el escultor Nacho Falgueras en marmolina; que pesa unos 120 kilos, y que sustituyó en el año 2000 a la escultura original, desaparecida un año antes en las profundidades del océano. Cada 15 de agosto, la comitiva sale del mar con ella a hombros y la lleva hasta la playa, donde llegan hacia la una y media de la tarde. La devoción hacia la Virgen de la Palma en Algeciras surge a finales del siglo XVII, cuando un barco procedente de Italia atracó en el puerto para refugiarse de un fuerte temporal. Cada vez que el barco intentaba salir, un nuevo temporal se lo impedía. Llegaron a trasladar el cargamento a otra embarcación, pero -según cuenta la historiadora Ana Gómez- volvía a ocurrir lo mismo hasta que decidieron sacar la imagen que llevaban en un cajón. Las aguas se calmaron y el pueblo interpretó que la Virgen insistía en quedarse. La Virgen llevaba una palma en la mano y este hecho se relacionó con la conquista de Algeciras en 1344 por Alfonso XI quien consagró la antigua mezquita como iglesia católica con el nombre de Virgen de la Palma por ser aquel día Domingo de Ramos. La romería marinera tal como y se la conoce hoy es una iniciativa de la Sociedad Federada de Pesca Deportiva El Mero, que en 1975 decidió realizar una réplica de la Virgen y organizar esta procesión.

“Los algecireños estamos especialmente orgullosos de esta fiesta” El alcalde de Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce, ha señalado que la romería marítima representa para los algecireños uno de los momentos festivos más esperados del verano. “Estamos convencidos de que se trata de un bien no sólo de Interés Turístico, como ha declarado oficialmente la Junta de Andalucía, sino de una tradición ampliamente consolidada y de notorio arraigo popular. Hace ya 39 años que se lleva a cabo está entrañable procesión marinera, pero es ésta la primera

vez en que se desarrollará con el título andaluz de Interés Turístico, un reconocimiento concedido después de varios años de insistencia y acreditación de suficientes visitantes y turistas”, ha declarado. de transporte público desde prácticamente todos los lugares de la ciudad, lo que permitirá una mayor fluidez de tráfico; dispositivos especiales de seguridad, asistencia médica y emergencias; brigadas de limpieza movilizadas para la ocasión y una ampliación de los horarios de funcionamiento de los módulos de servicios de playa. A todo ello hay que unir un gran espectáculo de fuegos artificiales marítimos y terrestres que pondrán el broche de oro a la jornada.

The Palma Procession, Fiesta of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia L.V. SOTOGRANDE.- Near 40.000 persons, according to official sources, they happened yesterday for the beach of The Rinconcillo to be present at the different acts that, on the occasion of the festivity of the Virgin of the Palm, take place in Algeciras every August 15. This is a very special day for the city since it celebrates the city patron saint, the Virgen de la Palma (“The Palm Virgin”). This Icon which throughout the year remains submerged in the sea, rises to the surface in one of the most unique and exciting marine processions. This maritime pilgrimage is a tradition that gathers thousands of people to El Rinconcillo Beach in Algeciras and that this year has been declared Fiesta of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia. The virgin who remains immersed in a cave at a depth of about 15 meters in the surroundings of the Algeciras Bay, is permanently under the control of the divers. They are in charge of the maintenance and the security of the sculpture; they also clean away the seaweed and finally make sure that the tide does not carry it away from its shelter. The pilgrimage begins with the first rays of sunshine, when the decorated boats leave the port and enter the Bay so the divers belonging to El Estrecho Diving Club may rescue the Icon. This marble sculpture made by Nacho Falgueras is a 1.10 meter high marble model and weighs 120 kg. Since 2000, the latter has been used as a substitution to the original which disappeared the year before in the ocean depths. A sculpture made by Nacho Falgueras has been raised from the depths of the sea as part of one of Andalusian Coast´s most remarkable maritime pilgrimages half past one in the afternoon. The City patron saint Icon then stays at the Plaza de la Virgen del Mar. A mass is held on the beach at around eight in the evening and at half past eleven, the sculpture is taken back to the cave where it remains all year long. At the stroke of midnight, fireworks are set off from the beach and also underwater in order to say good bye to the Virgin until next year, as recalled José Cortés, the president of the Federal Society of Sport Fishing El Mero. This homage paid to the Virgen de la Parma in Algeciras dates back to the 17th century when a boat from Italy docked in the City Port to shelter from a storm. Suddenly, the waves quietened down and the village thus assumed that the Virgin wanted to stay there. Furthermore, the Virgin was holding a palm leaf with can be related back to Conquest of Algeciras in 1344 by Alfonso XI, who converted the former Mosque of the city into a Catholic Church named after the Virgen de la Palma, since the date was Palm Sunday. The marine pilgrimage as we know it today was initiated by the El Mero which decided to make a copy of the Virgen de la Palma and to organize this procession in 1975.

now, but this is the first time it shall be held under the title of Andalusian Tourist Interest, a distinction granted after various years of insisting and the submission sufficient certificates regarding visitors and tourists” he declared.
