The situation

by Aldo I. Dian

Laverda, a brand more and more international 70% of the production destined to export Together with Laverda’s good growth in the West European Market, we can note as well a further increase in the East European Countries where we have focused a lot of investments during these last years. The activities started and in particular the clients satisfaction, who first have trusted the product manufactured in Breganze, have focused the client’s attention towards Laverda and its products. Many aspects have contributed to this success. First of all the reliability of the machines and the elevated qualitative standard of the products which can be appreciated during the most difficult conditions. It’s sufficient to think that a Laverda’s combine often accumulates more then 1500 working hours in each campaign, efficaciously operating on different products with reduced operating expenses. Another aspect to be considered concerns the exactitude designing, a master for our engineers. The ingeniousness which distinguishes the technical choices contributes to simplifying the complexity of the combine. This is not an easy job but is punctually performed on the various models, including the most sophisticated combines which Laverda introduces into the market. The commercial network contributes to create a specialized distribution focalized on the final user. Important appreciations emerge

from the clients in terms of service and quality of the product in comparison with the competitors, as well as in terms of the efficiency of the after sale services and spare parts dept. Besides the statistics, a very interesting fact is that the client satisfaction, which is expressed in lots of different languages (We have to consider that we export 70% of the production), is unanimous. Thanks to international manufacturing industrial agreements and to the recent evolution of the product, Laverda is nowadays able to reach all the West Europe Countries to satisfy the most advanced agriculture. The introduction of the new telescopic (TTH) Tele tractor

handler which will be marked in the Landini and Mc Cormick colours but completely developed and manufactured in Laverda, is a further index of this Company’s entrepreneurial dynamism more and more projected towards new markets. Surely there will be new surprises in short term above all considering that the new markets we are taking into consideration such as Japan, South and Central America, North Africa, and so on look forward to being Laverda’s clients. In the meantime, without losing any of our affectionate clients, we trust in the future, extending everybody our very best wishes for the New Year 2006.

Change in the Company’s management Mario Scapin succeeds to Aldo I. Dian in the management of the Breganze Plant Important confirmation by Cermet on the managing system for the Laverda’s corporate quality

Eng. Mario Scapin

Change in the Company’s management in the Breganze Plant. Starting form January 1, 2006 Mario Scapin assumes the position of Managing Director, succeeding to Aldo I. Dian. The new Managing Director, Mario Scapin, 45 years, a degree in mechanical engineering in Pisa, married for 14 years with Maria and father of Alessandro, was born in Tuscany (in Gavorrano, Grosseto) but his family has Venetian origins, which he tenderly mentions: in fact his father is from Roncade (Treviso) while his paternal grandfather is from Santa Maria di Sala (Venice). The arrival of the engineer Scapin in Breganze can be considered as a return to the places of origin. But also two other elements can be retraced to his family: a strong passion both for the mechanics and for the agricultural machines. “I was born in the Country “– the new Managing Director explains with a strong Tuscan accent, - and in my memories I can see the image of when I was a child and I loved to get on combines and tractors in the fields all around my house.” In fact Mario Scapin is really following in his father's footsteps. “My father“- he tells - had a workshop and repaired agricultural machines and my grandfather not only was very keen on mechanics and agricultural equipments, but he also was a farmer”. We could say that it was fate! The passion for the mechanics is reinforced by the degree in mechanical engineering obtained in Pisa, after the “Liceo Scientifico” and is concretized during his

Cermet, the body for the certification, has confirmed the managing system for the Laverda Spa quality in the Breganze Plant, on the basis of the UNi Eb Iso 9001: 2000 provision. Designing, manufacturing, sale of harvesting machines and treatment of agricultural products machines are the services realized in the Breganze Plant to which it’s recognized the quality System Certificate. Laverda Spa, who has based his corporate policy on the quality of its products and on the service to his clients since a lot of year, has brilliantly got through the accurate controls by Cermet for the issue of the validity continuation of the certificate already obtained for the first time in 1996. An other confirmation of the excellence reached in the Breganze plant thanks to the validity of the process activities performed in Laverda Spa and to the main technologies. Consequently an evident positive mark for the quality for the service and machines produces.

first professional experiences in the motorcycle field at the Piaggio Company in Pontedera. And what’s about his second passion that’s the one for the agricultural machines? “He never left me and for almost fifteen years I have been working in this field. In particular I have been working for 4 year in the Argo Industrial Group where starting from January 1, 2002 I have assumed the position of Engineering Managing Director, and this year the position of McCormick Managing Director in Doncaster, UK”. Today he accepts this new challenge in quality of Laverda’s Managing Director with a well defined mission that is in absolute continuity with the previous managing direction: the grow of the Company to be realized through clears and coherent objectives. These objectives concern the product and in particular the enrichment of the offer thanks to the evolution of the combines’ ranges and to the introduction of new lines such as the new telescopic handler. And then objectives concerning the Laverda’s specific values that are: quality, reliability and service. Quality and reliability go together with profitability because a good quality and reliable machine obviously produces profitability, because a machine manufactured following the Laverda’s productive principles keeps an important residual income as it’s very

durable and resistant. Service is instead concretized, in terms of closeness to the Market, thanks to a privileged relation with the client. Finally industrial objectives which can permit Laverda to go on in the begun process to further improve the flexibility and the rapidity of the answer to the market demands, by developing the right product in a short time and the capacity of executing the orders. These ones are high objectives who always take care to the human factor, following the Laverda’s tradition that has always had at heart the client’s satisfaction.

Farm-contractors: the most interested visitors At EIMA the public of professional men has appreciated the new M 304 LS 4WD Integrale and the LCS Models Eima Show which took place in Bologna in November has been an edition not so frequented as the previous 2004 edition. 103.000 visitors in comparison to 111.000 of the previous year. But Unacoma organizers confirm that during the 5 days of the exhibition, who has registered 1760 exhibitors, good was the presence of the foreign operators: 9.300 (besides 9% of the total presences), coming from 95 Countries. Satisfactory have been the results for what concerns the commercial agreements, also developed thanks to aimed workshops and official foreign missions from 25 Countries”. Unfortunately also this year the opening of EIMA took place at the same time with the closing of Agritechnica in Hannover - Mr. Angelo Benedetti, Laverda sales and marketing Director Comments - a difficult situation for the Bologna fair which is not able to release from this concomitance. Obviously this is a problem for the Bologna exposition above all considering that many of our clients and of the other exhibitors in Eima move all around Europe. I think that in the future the becoming of Eima a biennal exhibition will improve the consideration of the show. However in the Laverda Stand - Mr. Benedetti adds - the visits have been numerous and the public was very interested in our machines”. “The main visitors of the exhibition have been the farm-contractors and the big Companies while the small family public, the agriculture who usually comes to look around and then refers to the farm-contractos who has a machine instead of an other one, lacked. This is my feeling even if during the first days of the exhibition, the organization’s official data have announced a higher crowd in comparison to year 2004. This is the second time Laverda has token part to Eima together with all the ARGO “fleet”, in a big stand together with the other brands of the Group. “This fact surely gives prominence to Laverda and to the different specific ness of the Argo Group, underlining the greatness of this industrial Group - Mr. Benedetti affirms. Great has been also the image given to the innovation exposed: the tele tractor handler - fruit of the Laverdas’ technology and designing and the McCormick tractor of the year 2006”. Also the closeness with the stand of Gallignani, partnership in the business with Laverda Spa, has been aimed to underline the realizable synergies. Gallignani is leader in the

haymaking machines and surely also the management of the Laverda technologic products such as the big balers and the fixed chamber round balers will permit the Company to reach good results. Which are the innovations introduced by Laverda? First of all the M304 LS 4 WD Integrale. This levelling system, last innovation of the M Series, is also equipped with a rear handler that let the machine to be always perfectly levelled. In this way the combine remains perfectly levelled on each of its side on 20% traversal slopes and on 30% longitudinal slopes uphill. It’s a perfect machine for the easy hills such as the Italy, Germany and France territories and it permits great performances. The other innovation - Mr. Benedetti goes on - being a reliable and cheap machine - is the Crop System LCS Combine who completes the Rev series. It’s addressed to the same clients as the M304 LS 4 WD Integrale, being a little bit superior. It is characterized by separation similar characteristics thanks to the MCS system. Its new cab has been

designed for the comfortable conditions in which the operator can work. For this reasons it’s the ideal machine for the farmcontractor who needs a M series machine, cheaper but who is able to guarantee great performances and reliability as it’s used a lot. The interest of the farm- contractors for this kind of machines is given by its versatility which guarantees good margins and can work with all the products, even if with rice, wheat and legumes. But there weren’t only combines in the Laverda’s stand. Also the window of the clothes for work and free time together with the fine spare parts exposition have been really appreciated. The Spare Parts Department has very diversified the offer meeting the demands not only of the today’s and yesterday’s Laverda fan but also of the professional men who work with other operative machines. The diffused Laverda network can perfectly support the spare parts distribution and the after sale service for what concerns both our second hand machines and the competitor’s ones.

The new “REDS” in the window In Bologna, Laverda has introduced two new combines which completes its range M 304 LS 4 WD Integrale All the visitors of the Argo’s stand could appreciate in the Laverda’s area the new M 304 LS 4 WD Integrale, last innovation of the M series. This combine, thanks to the machine’s automatic levelling function, four wheel drive and rear lifting mechanism always remains perfectly level and able to provide optimum performances plus absolute comfort for the operator on any slope. The four wheel drives along with integral levelling allows the machine to work in all directions, over vast areas and even on the most difficult ground and the combines always remains perfectly level and can work across slopes with 20% gradients, up slopes as steep as 30% and down 10% slopes, facilitating the successive straw harvesting operations with undeniable time savings in all phases. M 304 LS 4 WD Integrale unifies the great performance typical of the big machines to the qualities of agility and of being easy manoeuvrable typical of a small machine (as it’s totally automatically integral). The combine is provided with the GSA, PFR, MCS Laverda exclusive systems, HCD sieving pans and the commodore cab whose essential characteristic are Top class comfort, ergonomics, rational controls, best visibility, together with the passenger seat, and automatic air conditioning system, removable fridge and kit relax which includes on request CD reader, telecamera with colour display and GPS satellite system. This is the ideal environment for the operator’s well being and efficiency also during the most difficult working days.

Laverda Crop System, the competitiveness Also Laverda 255 LCS new medium level series of combines interested a lot the visitors who have made a lot of questions about its performances. LCS Laverda Crop System Combines are versatile and functional machines, able to work in different agricultural contests and characterized by great comfort and attention to the quality of the job. Laverda LCS combines complete, together with the REV series combines, the middle class offer of the Company in Breganze. They represent the ideal choice for the careful professional man who chooses and looks for the Top in terms of efficiency and performance, quality of the worked product and reliability and durability of the machine

which represents a sure source of profit. The design is new, characterized by essentiality and reliability and it combines with the functionality and the operator’s comfort. Rich is the basilar equipment which, appreciating the REV Series, proposes the following exclusive Laverda Systems: GSA, PFR, MCS to work safety and respecting the quality also in the most difficult conditions due to the ground conformation and to the conditions and typology of the product. Also the cab is new: it’s the Profi Cab, which permits the operator to work at top-class comfort. Ergonomic controls perfectly set inside the cab are very simple to use to always maintain the total control of the movements. Many people, always after queuing, wanted to try to get on and directly appreciate the new cab interiors. Special standard equipments are the HCD Sieving pans.

The exclusive Laverda equipments GSA. Ground Self Alignment. It’s an automatic transversal and longitudinal self-levelling system that aligns the cutting header to the ground. The tested Terra Control keeps uniform in a fully automatic way both the cut and the ground pressure. GSA offers a uniform cut even in the most difficult condition thanks to an optimal utilization of the combine. A good cut is the first requisite for a good alimentation.

Angelo Benedetti sales and marketing manager

PFR. Prepare and Feeding Roller. The PFR system, thanks to a roller with retractable fingers in the elevator inlet, ensures a continuous, regular flow of the product from the cutting head to the threshing components. The homogeneous and regular flow ensures optimal threshing of the product, regular efficiency of the combine, less power required, lower consumptions, longer lasting transmissions. Everything safeguarding the environment. MCS. Multi Crop Separator. The system, exclusively patented by Laverda, permits to differentiate the separation efficiency of the threshing components following the kind and the conditions of the product, increasing the combine performance by separating the grain from the straw before it reaches the straw walkers. It’s simply possible to pass through an electrical switch from a more aggressive threshing system to a softer one (for example with fragile straw or changes of the humidity conditions of the product). Utmost Versatility for the M Series. Thanks to MCS, in every machine every separation system has two separation systems. HCD Sieving pans. High Capacity Design. They are special standard equipments which the M Series has. Thanks to their exclusively design, it’s possible to make the most of the cleaning system for what concerns the cleaning, the ventilation and the productivity.

The new factotum giant was born in Breganze Designed, patented and manufactured in Laverda, the TTH, telescopic handler of the Argo Group A very special machine received the EIMA visitors in the entering gallery of the Bologna fair. A great blue telescopic handler, painted with the classic Landini colour, but with an important Laverda target to indicate the designing and manufacturing place. The tele tractor handler TTH 35X9X45 was at his first public introduction which was marked by the “Eima technical innovation” award, given by Unacoma. This new factotum machine, friend of farmer and of the people who work in the building field was the last innovation inside the Argo Group. And it’s a machine all “made in Breganze”. In fact Argo, has completely assigned to Laverda, his designers, and his know how the responsibility of the “Giano project” from which the TTH was born. It’s really in the Breganze plant the TTH 35X9X45 will exit, from the manufacturing lines which are being organized, in two different colours and look: the blue Landini and the red McCormick, brand leader in the Argo groups’s tractors field who will follow the TTH marketing both in Italy and all over the world. The Argo Group to design the TTH which permit him to enter in a new and strategic market sector, relayed on the Laverda’s experience maturated during decades spent in the designing and production of so big and complicated machines that are the combines. In Breganze all the creative phases of the TTH35X9X45 have been concretized: technical research, development, patents, homologation, product strategic marketing, a jewel who Laverda gives to the sale-network of the “sister” companies Landini and McCormick for its distribution in the market. Four are the innovative patents applied to the TTH. The “Dual drive System” reversible driving position, which permits a bidirectional use of the machine; the electronic variable transmission with the first “mixed” power shift and hydrostatic pump/engine, the telescopic boom with its cartridge- type inner boom extension system and finally the new steering system with four steering wheels and four different steering: besides the three steering used for the telescopic handler up today (with the only anterior tyres, corrected bend steering and crab stee-

ring) it’s added a fourth steering that is the possibility to steer with the only rear axle. This steering system is very useful because it allows a perfect handling also in the reverse driving. The telescopic handler has a 150 HP power engine and offers the innovation of the patented reversible driving position “Dual drive system” which permits the inversion of the driving direction in a few seconds. Moreover it offers the most spacious and brightest cab of any TTH in the market. As we have already said, the closed telescopic boom is very exclusive equipped with two elements which can be unthreaded without any external component, resulting in this way very clear, light and compact to guarantee the operator’s maximum visibility, safety and operative speed. The TTH is the top of its range and is the first one of a family of machines inside which other different models will be introduced to satisfy the various sectors of the market and being right for the operators’ different typologies. But the public has already understood the TTH peculiarities appreciated for versatility and functionality. A lot is already explai-

ned through its name: 35X9X45: 3500 Kg lift capacity, 9 metres high telescopic boom, 4500 Kg lift capacity. The new Tele Tractor Handler summarizes the characteristic of a tractor, crane, and excavator, forestall machine, and above all is a machine able to lift, move and transport very heavy materials. On the “nose” of its telescopic boom can be assembled hundreds of different accessories, such as crane hooks buckets, forks and any other kind of accessories destined to the harvesting and cultivation operations. This machines was historically born in the ground moving and in the building but it was successively adapted to other exigencies and nowadays Laverda has realized a polyhydric model which besides meeting the traditional customers’ requirements , it has specifically been created for the application in agriculture. A combine complementary machine, TTH can work with the equipments of the other brand of the Argo Group such as for example Fella and Pegoraro as it’s a great tractor with good performances, equipped with an electronic rear lifer characterized by a high performance.

The tractor for disabled people At the Eima exhibition a new 105 Landini Power- farm tractor has been introduced equipped to be used by disabled people thanks to some specific technical solutions, among which radio-controlled multiple system to get on, able to facilitate the cab access for the disabled people with difficulty of deambulation or in wheel chairs. The project has been realized by Landini with the Hanytech collaboration: The Landini Power farm 105 has been equipped with a reversal- hydraulic device controlled by a lever of the wheel, with a push button engine clutch and with an overdrive which permits to change gear through a simple button. The Landini Tractor is equipped with a Perkins Turbo charger engine 105 HP, 2200 rpm which permits to work in every condition, in extreme security and with an excellent margin of power and torque reserve.

The services

When the combines go on a cruise To ship: safe transportation even with special means The export sales office in Laverda organizes shipping towards a lot of destination: Turkey , Russia, Algeria, Romania, New Caledonia and so on…. every expedition is a different experience, a comparison among different Continents, Countries, laws, rules an cultures. Sometimes it’s very easy to organize everything starting form the estimate and arriving to the final load on the boat. Other times things are much more complicated and we never stop to learn something but …this is very important in our life! To personally assist to the load of a combine is surely a very interesting experience. By a professional point of view it’s very useful to directly see the operative modalities used to move these special machines in order to better understand the problems which can be originated. Our company’s nearest harbour is in Chioggia (Venice) . Whoever had visited it in July would have assisted to the shipment of a few Laverda’s combines together with cutting bars, wheat bars, sunflower kits, tracks, cutting bar trailer and other accessories. The stowage of the accessories is the first step. A very precise job to fit all the accessories optimizing the space and without damaging the goods both during the loading, the transportation and the unloading operations. The next step is the general control affected by the stevedore and the closing of the hold. At this point the combine’s “landing strip” is ready. In fact the machines, once have been fixed with four steel ropes (15 ton. each) to the four hooks on the combine’s roof, are easily lifted up with a crane despite weighing 12.000 kg each. It seems like they are flying! Then when the combines are put on the boat, they are fixed with steel ropes to the mechanical haulage and to the anterior and rear axles and then are fixed to hooks situated in the hatches. The draft created among the used devices guarantees their efficiency against the transversal, longitudinal, and vertical stresses which can happen during the travel. When all the operations are concluded, we have only to wish combines a good voyage! Sara Acanfora

The markets

The whole ARGO group’s fleet arrives in Hannover In Agritechnica Laverda, Landini, McCormick, Valpadana, Fella and Gallignani Agritechnica, one of the most important worldwide exhibitions in the agricultural mechanization field, took place in Hannover in November. The previous edition took place in 2003; in fact this is a biennial exhibition, like SIMA show which takes place in Paris. Laverda in hall n° 6 in a stand together with all the other brands of the Group showed two models of combines, M306 with a 6.60 meter cutting bar and REV 255 with 6 meter cutting bar. In the stand of the Group, besides the combines, there were the Landini and McCormick tractors, the Valpadana special tractors, the Fella haymaking machines and the Pegoraro soil-working implements together with a Gallignani well known combined “speed liner” round baler. Everything in a stand measuring over 1.850 square metres. Inside the Argo stand great attention was given to the McCormick TTH, developed and produced in the Laverda plant in Breganze and introduced for the first time as a technical innovation at the show in Hannover. Thanks to its combines, Laverda aroused great interest also probably because of two important brands such as Fendt (well known in Germany as tractor’s absolute leader and synonymous of quality non only for the German market) and Massey Fergunson, both of them very popular in the public opinion and among the German operators, exposed the machines produced in Breganze with their commercial colours and targets. It impressed a lot the fact that Agco choose Laverda as its productive partners. Laverda combines have in fact always been appreciated for the modern line and the people who already knew them appreciated their operative simplicity, their performances and their great reliability and durability. In the centre of the Argo stand it was possible to admire the Fella haymaking machines, knew all over the world and precisely movers, tedding machines, and swather. Agritechnica is not only an attraction for the German farmers and operators but it’s also an important appointment for North and Central Europe. In particular this year edition, also for the entrance of new East Countries in the CEE where agricultural farms dimensions are sometimes very impressive in comparison to the mid Western European ones, was entirely successful with a crowd increase of 13% in comparison with the year 2003. Agritechnica has been visited by more then 252.000 people. Hannover’s Show is a privileged observatory to analyze which could or should be the future development of the agricultural mechanization. Gianni Fontana

THE GERMAN SECTOR ASSOCIATION AWARDS A PRICE TO MR. PURRER, FELLA’S R&D MANAGER November 4, 2005 in occasion of the VDM Land Technick 63rd international meeting, a few important people won medals for having been distinguished in the research and development applied to agriculture. To receive the award, among others, was Mr. Eng. Joseph Purrer, Fella Werke Gmbh & Co. Kg R&D manager. Purrer has the merit for the technical progress in the mechanization of the haymaking machines and for the development of the machines destined to the professional men. His new ideas for the exploitation of the more sophisticated and modern means such as the simulation programmes and the CAD systems inside a Company leader have been really genius.

The Laverda’s organization in France gets stronger All the headquarters’ services at the disposal of the cisalpine network France is one of the most important European markets even if in the agricultural field. Consequently it’s very important and strategic for the companies which work in the agricultural field such as Laverda to reinforce their own presence already improved during these years. Exactly for this reason we are reorganizing our products’ distribution network in France. The fact to put the product always closer to the distributive network with the intent to lean the process improves the information and speeds up the reaction rate, focal point for Laverda Spa. Nowadays our French commercial network will directly enter in contact with Laverda Spa developing synergies and obtaining further margins of efficiency. In this way the final French client could count not only on the organization of the referring dealer but also on the headquarter-customer service. He will be able to save time and receive more immediate answers to his demands. The following ones are the departments and services of the headquarters at complete disposition of the French network. Marketing and Sales dept: the office is responsible for the development of the distributive network, for everything concerning sales and after sales services. It follows the communication in general. Administration and Financial dept: the dept. supports every financial valuation. Sales Administration: it’s the dept. responsible for the management of the orders and all the connected activities. After sale Service: it supports the French network in the technical problems. This service is moreover responsible for the technical trainings together with the Marketing service. It follows the product creation and the organization of all the manifestations. After sale services: it’s responsible for every demand referred to the spare parts. Simonetta Lambrocco

Mr.Rondeau: sales manager for the French market Years of professional experience in the field of the agricultural machines Starting from 1st of Nov, 2005 Fabrice Rondeau entered the Laverda team in quality of France’s sales manager. 51 Years old, Mr. Rondeau is a real professional. Agriculture is for him a great calling. “I am from Marne, an agricultural and wine area and since when I was a child I used to admire tractors, combines, and the bins for wheat. – Mr. Fabrice Rondeau explains. I used to draw them in my exercise books and build wood or “Lego” models. It was a kind of innate passion.” After the technical studies, he was engaged by a big Company famous for the combines and which was starting the manufacturing of the machines for the vintage. These 8 years in the Company were very important for Mr Rondeau’s technical and commercial experience. After that he became more professional working for three years in quality of commercial inspector for a French Company specialized in tractors. After these two formative experiences, Fabrice Rondeau assumed other jobs at an other German Company specialized in the harvesting machines. A period of great professional commitment during which he covered a lot of roles even becoming managing director of a branch house. Nowadays, Laverda sales manager, Fabrice Rondeau trust the reliability of the brand and his specialization, very appreciated from the operators: “The Laverda brand is famous for prestige and history. Moreover we have not to forget our managerial style that is to maintain a privileged relation with the final user by constantly servicing him. Fidelity is in fact based on the quality of the product and on the human relations. Experiences are being acquired during the years but the most important thing remains the real passion for the job. Moreover Laverda- the new sales manager affirms- specialist for the harvesting machines for more then 130 years, well satisfies the markets’ demand thanks to its good quality- combines, qualified for the most difficult product’s harvest.

French Dealer in the driving- cab

Innov Agri for the first time in the South West

During the last harvesting, the French sales team has taken part to the training about the combines for the Master Field in Laverda. This summer two meetings have been organized, the first one on July 13 in Saint Martin Sur Oreuse at the dept. Yonne 89, the other one in Caouennec at the dept. Cotes d’Armour (22). The program was composed of two parts: theory (in the classroom in the morning about the introduction of the range of the combines and information about the product) and a practical experience in the field in the afternoon. These days have been very important for two reasons: Laverda had the occasion to show the sales managers the evolution and the specificity of the products and above all has offered them the possibility to touch and drive the machines. On their side the students could appreciate the product and express their expectations about the request from the market. To give attention to the dialogue with the people who work everyday in the field is a MUST for Laverda in order to propose to its clients the right machines for the clients’ expectations. Harvesting is a very specific field where specialists place their knowledge at the everybody’s disposal. During the work in the field, the machine has been analyzed by a lot of points of view: the operator’s job environment, the accessibility and the maintenance, the manageability, the shape, the performances, and the quality of the job, the study of the technical specifications and of particular systems such as the levelling system. At the end of the day, everyone returns to follow the harvest evolution in his area, enriched from a new experience on one of Laverda’s machine.

The first edition of the Innov Agri Grand Sud Ouest took place at the Lycee Agricole of Ondes in the Haute Garonne Region. Laverda, with the collaboration of its local dealer Montauban (82) and Lavail, participated at the event. For the first time in the South West (usually the event takes place every two year in the Loiret region in Outarville) this open air exhibition let us see a lot of machines, agricultural equipments for the harvester, the crushing, the cultivation and the sowing . Innov Agri is a successful exhibition because it’s a demonstrative- dynamic show in the field: you have to consider that neither the bad weather caused a reduction of the crowd. In the stand measuring 200 square metres, Laverda showed 2 combines of his range: M and M 306. M 304 LS 4 WD Integrale, 5 straw walkers, perfectly levelled on each of its side on 20% transversal slopes and on 30% longitudinal slopes uphill and 10% downhill, with the lugging power distributed on 4 driving wheels (4WD) , equipped with a 5,4 meter cutting bar is the perfect choice for harvesting in the rolling-hilly areas of the South – West. M 306 was equipped with an 8 row maize header with stalkchopper. Great was its performance even if the rain from the previous days made the harvest conditions worse. The two machines perfectly came up to everyone expectation. They have been observed in details and a lot of questions have been made to the Laverda Staff. Very appreciated has been the innovation and operative simplicity of the “REDS.” They are already working on the next 2006 exhibition which will take place in Outarville (45), an appointment Laverda will not miss. From now on this exhibition will take place every year, alternatively in the North and South of France.

The Levelling System in the Belgium plain and hill

Peter Dequeecker, Matera S.A sales and product manager

Also in Luxemburg grown the interest for the REDS imported by the Matera Company Laverda has been represented in Belgium and Luxemburg since 2003 from Matera S.A which imports the complete range of machine of the Breganze Plant. Matera, exclusive importers also for the Landini and Mc Cormick products, belongs to the Matermaco Group which is divided in two parts. A network of dealers assures the distribution and the after sale service for the clients of Belgium and Luxemburg. While the Matera organization supports the distributive network: in fact the Area Managers work close agreements with the dealers and give them all the necessary information. The Company’s marketing service organises various commercial actions and is committed to communicate all the indication necessary for the sales development. Belgium is still an agricultural inclination Country. The population is 10 millions and there are 35.000 agricultural firms. The landscape is characterized by a great diversification of

the soil. Here the Laverda Levelling System Combines are much appreciated. The activity is particularly oriented towards the production of corn, wheat, maize, rape but in some areas tritticum, peas, pelt and oats are cultivated. During these last years the market of the combines remained steady but Laverda was able to grow. In 3 years Matera has already obtained a market share of 6% with Laverda and a further improvement is expected. The “REDS” of Breganze are much appreciated in this Country. Dominique Jaques, managing director of the agricultural Company in the Abbey of Scormont where the famous bear Chimay is produced explains: “We have purchased a M 306 LS this year with a 6.60 meter cutting bar which has perfectly worked during all the harvest season. In our agricultural firm we sow a mixture of oats, beans and spelth we grind in the field to obtain pet food. During the harvest, we could appreciate our M306LS because this machine is very simple

to drive and very good is its performance, thanks to the PFR which simplifies a regular and uniform flow of the product and to the MCS system which obtains an excellent separation of the straw from the grains. Moreover it’s possible to work with the machine regulated at its best on the basis of the condition of the product and of the humidity in the field”. An other testimony is given by Mr. Zephi Donneux, agriculture in Hannut: “our job is submitted to a constant pressure because the competition is always stronger and stronger and the rules for the protection of the environment are stricter and stricter. The farmer and the agricultural are obliged to produce more and more and at the same time to reduce prices. As a consequence, we have to steer our choice toward more functional and reliable machines. For this reason we have chosen Laverda”. Peter Dequeecker

Scourmont, 150 years of “ora et labora” The Monks of Notre Dame have stimulated the cultivations and productions in this area 1st July 2000, Father Prior Monk Dom Armand Veilleux celebrated with a solemn sermon on the anniversary of the foundation of the Notre Dame du Scourmont Abbey, Mary of the Sacred Mountain. During his sermon to the believers the monk told that along the street toward Rieze, where there is the Wayeres farm and where the first monks arrived from San Sisto in the1850’s to settle, there is a cross on which there is the following inscription: “25th July 1850 some Cistercian Monks, who have founded the Scourmont Abbey, started to praise God and to work the ground.” In this short inscription, we can already find the two fundamental elements of the monastic rule: to work the ground and to pray God. “Ora et labora”, in accordance with the Rule of Saint Benedetto. The founding of the monastic Abbey in Scourmont is due to the meeting of two men: the Monk Jean Baptiste Jourdain, curate of Virelleis and Mr. Joseph de Riquet, Count of Caraman and Prince of Chimay. (Origin of the name of the famous bear). The first, an ecclesiastic man, wanted to found a Community of men to pray and work; the second, a powerful man, desired the development of his reign and for this reason he gave a part of his lands to the monks for cultivation. One of the characteristic of the religious order in Citeaux which the monks of the Scormont Abbey belonged to was and is nowadays to live thanks to the cultivation of the lands. Since more than 150 years, the monks in Scourmont, at Forgeges, a town a few kilometres away from Chimay go on dedicating their time to pray and to a lot of material activities which permit them to live and to help

their brothers and sisters. They support the agricultural development of their Country which is very close to France and together with the local population. During the years, the Monks started a lot of activities which have become autonomous. Among these activities we can mention the production of the famous trappist bear characterized by the unmistakable squat bottle. Simonetta Lambrocco M 306 Ls is working. A brand-new round baler for the students of the Agricultural Institute Laverda’s donation to the Parolini Institute, a very good scholastic-business reality School and agricultural farm: this is the double role of the “Parolini“ Institute of Bassano del Grappa (Vicenza). The students become very good technicians and experts in the different fields of the agricultural production and environmental protection, thanks to 5 years direct practice in the agricultural activities afforded in the school- farm. Laverda wanted to help these students giving them a significant gift very important for their activities. The Parolini professional Institute for agriculture and the environment in Bassano del Grappa sees among its 400 students the sons of many families who work in the agricultural sector. The location of the school is Villa Rubbi, a rural building of which the most ancient part goes back to the end of 1600’as attested by the famous historian of art Renato Cevese. The frescos, as the headmaster Mr. Massimo Caneva explained, represents rural scenes in the “Valle del Brenta” have been recuperated by professor Tassello from Bassano during the early years of 80’s. The most recent part of the building is from the year 1928. Starting from 1972 the building was used for scholastic purposes, firstly associated with the agricultural Institute in Lonigo (Vicenza) and afterwards becoming autonomous. In 1928 the town Council of Bassano acquired the school and had placed at the disposal of the school ten hectares which are nowadays annexed to the Institute become a real agricultural farm. That’s the land cultivated by the students; an excellent occasion for putting into practice what they have learnt in the classrooms, contributing in this way to the scholastic expenses. In fact the agricultural products are sold and directly available at the scholastic outlet’s, open every day from 10 am to 12 am. Among these products, besides the olive oil squeezed by the olives of 350 plant, we underlined the famous maize flour of Marano, perfect for the yellow “polenta”; a vitreous maize with a reduced maize-cob, harvested by the students and produced for the first time at the end of 800’s by Antonio Fioretti from Marano (that' is the origin of the name). Finally we have an experimental apple orchard with 49 typical varieties and a pear orchard with 20 varieties of ancient pears. Laverda was immediately interested in the Parolini Institute, sustaining the educational project of the school and encouraging the young people to study and practice. For this reason, following a request received by the headmaster Caneva, Laverda has decided to contribute to the activity of the agricultural farm with the donation of a round baler model VB 218. The round baler was delivered on 29th September 2005 with a simple Ceremony to which all the 400 students of the school took place. During the meeting with the professors and the students I personally wanted to underline the attention of Laverda towards the world of the school and of the agriculture: strategic fields linked to the feeding and health of the population. Nowadays it’s very important to concentrate on the quality and good training is the essential point to reach it. The Parolini Institute - professor Zago precised – is a modern school, strongly oriented towards the outside. 30% of our students go on with the university studies. 70% start working in the sector. This event permits Laverda to be better known by the students and Angelo Benedetti, sales and marketing Manager, to show them the reality of the Industrial Argo Group, explaining brands, products, and

its Companies. The meeting was concluded with a friendly toast with “Vespaiolo”, a sparkling guaranteed quality Wine of the cooperative wine growers association of Breganze who the school is a member. Finally there were the greetings and the thanks of the headmaster Caneva and of all the professors of the Institute. Simonetta Lambrocco

The album 14 Massimo Laverda, great technique and passion He was the protagonist in the development of the most beautiful Italian motorbikes The recent and premature death of Massimo Laverda which deeply struck the world of Italian motorcycling, drawn among his friend and collaborators the attention to the tracts of his figure which have placed him among the protagonist of the success of the Italian motorcycling industry starting form the second half of the 900’s. Massimo very younger at about 30 years managed the Company “Moto Laverda “in Breganze founded in 1949 by his Father Francesco. The Company together with the Pietro Laverda Company manufacturer of agricultural machines and the “Laverda Trento Spa manufacturer of tourist aircrafts and caravans set up one of the most interesting and dynamic mechanical industrial groups during the 60’s and 70’s. A talented young man very interested in the innovation and in the changes of the market, Massimo was able to understand the changing roles of the motorbikes which from an economic and familiar means of transport were becoming an instrument for sport and free time. This insight also shared with the more developed markets such as the American One drove him towards a very demanding adventure; the realization of the first Italian maxi- motorbike which started in 1966. That was the Laverda 750 bicylindrical, an absolute international innovation; a future must of the design and technology, which is still a cult for every collector. It’s a very original motorbike with a very powerful hanging engine block perfectly integrated with the frame. Lines are clean, roar in unmistakable and the bravery guide is very fascinating. The following motorcycle was the 1000, three cylinders RCS version. This motorcycle can be considered the best of the European motorcycle design of that time. The commercial success of these realizations goes together with the competitions. Massimo is very fond of the races. 750 SFC bicylindric sportive ver-

sions dominated in the Italian and European circuits. The young Laverda brothers (Massimo and Pierantonio) reached important results also in the sector of the smallpowered motorbike: the quick 125 Laverda were the dream of a generation of teenagers during the seventies and thousand of models were manufactured. A renovation of the Company through the building of a new plant and the introduction of the most modern technologies followed the good answer of the market. In the “Moto Laverda“offices one of the first IBM data processing systems was installed. Laverda is also research and innovation. The Moto Laverda Company was managed by a person able to create a unified team together with the desi-

gners and technicians infusing great passion and cohesion. Thanks to the collaboration with Mr. Vittorio Alfieri, designer of a lot of projects of the Maserati Company, a new very ambitious project starts in 1977: the realization of the 1000 six cylinders, 90° V. Massimo Laverda says: “When we decided to realized this motorbike, an unprecedented creation in the history of competitive motorcycle, we wanted to improve our technology and to create the occasion of a direct comparison with the most qualified competitors to be transferred the future motorbikes. The refined and innovative engine is the best one characterized by the best technical solutions adopted for the Formula 1 racing cars. This motorbike which unfortunately remains only a

The history, the stories

The Christmas crib, a copyright of Saint Francesco Popular Art and tradition: a common symbol of the rural Nativity The Christmas crib, “made” in Italy and exported around the World, follows the tradition derived from an idea by Saint Francesco. The “revolutionary” and creative poor boy of Assisi, struck by a travel to Betlemme and by the numerous description of Luca and Matteo Evangelists, in Greccio, Umbria, during the Christmas night in 1223, as his ancient biographer narrates, recreated the Nativity inside a cave with a manger full of forage, an ox and a little donkey, thanks to the collaboration of a man living in that countryside. Standing in front of his realization, Francesco is “Ecstatic in front of the crib, the spirit rich in happiness and indescribable joy”. He celebrates the Mass in front of many people. In this way Greccio becomes the new Betlemme and the atmosphere is full of people, animals, torches, sounds and songs. This episode, magically painted by Giotto in the fresco of the “Basilica Superiore” in Assisi, is the first story of the crib. The rural scene, described by Tommaso da Celano, in fact, respects the collective crib imaginary everybody has (crib derives from the Latin world which stands for shed, manger.). There are many variants due to the local tradition where landscapes and characters change in accordance with the latitude of the maker, as well as the gifts given to the Child which often permit to understand each place’s speciality. During the Centuries the tradition of the crib becomes not only the Image of Christmas for the Christianity but also a powerful artistic expression. In Neaple we can find the first representation of the crib in 1025 in a document related with the Church of the Holy Mary of the crib. In Rome the first testimonies go back to the wooden statues of Arnolfo Di Cambio (1298) preserved in the crypt of the “Cappella Sistina” of the “Basilica di

Santa Maria Maggiore”. From that time on, the attention of artists and noblemen for the Nativity grew bigger and above all bigger in the paintings and sculptures but the modern concept of the crib goes back to a Venetian character who is Saint Gaetano from Thiene, born in Vicenza from a noble family and died in Neaple after a religious life in the name of the poverty and sacrifice chosen after frequented a too much gorgeous and “politic” Vaticano, as underlined by the Lutheran Critics. The Saint from Vicenza at the “Santa Maria della Stelletta” Oratory in Neaple in 1530 made a crib composed of lots of wooden characters dressed following in that time fashion. That century’s Chronicles tale that the habit of making the crib around the statue of the Child was widespread in the churches and monasteries, but also in the chapels and palaces. From that moment on a lot of artistic ideas started. In the 600’s and above all in the 700’s very important was the Napoleon crib thanks also to Mr.Carlo III of Borbone and to his input for an artistic development which was realized also in the art of the crib

which nowadays is represented by tiled and handicraft masterpieces. Very important is also the fact that Sicily, starting from the 600’s and fascinated by the influences of the “Campania“ Region, develops a crib art with the use of very particular materials such as coral, ivory, bone, mother of pearl, alabaster, shell or the typical wax used to shape the statues in the area of Palermo and Siracusa where the beekeeping was very widespread. More moderate is the Roman crib tradition often representing the Sacred Family surrounded by simple figures and set in the region of the countryside of Rome. In Liguria above all in the 800’s statues are in clay, hand painted created above all in the furnaces of Avona and Albisola. Even if the art of the crib in Liguria was born and widespread above all during the baroque Period. We have also to mention the tradition of the crib in Puglia, a very ancient tradition but very famous in the 800’s thanks to the creations of a category of men working the famous paper pulp, successfully imitated by the barbers in Lecce who, during the free time, were able to realize very important paper pulp and clay works. Finally the crib, starting from Italy arrived all around the World, reaching Africa and Far East, above all thanks to the missionaries the Crib was accepted in a favourable way thanks to its popular dimensions and rural origins also where the Christendom was only a minority. Both in Italy and in the Western Countries it has to compete above all in the 60’s and 70’s with the Nordic Christmas three. But nowadays these two symbols live together and the crib is still very important thanks to its rural origin and Franciscan message. Giotto, Greccio’s crib, “Basilica Superiore” in Assisi.
