Welcome to the third edition of The Bridal Affair! With the wedding journey having so many milestones for the couple to celebrate, this edition features real life weddings but also engagement shoots and parties, bridal showers as well as a boudoir shoot. Despite where in the journey you are, there is inspiration for you every step of the way! We’re seeing a trend in the wedding scene where couples are moving away from typical wedding looks to something that is more tailored and fresh that feels like ‘them’. One of the ways to personalize events is to introduce statements details that pack a punch. Giving your events that personal style makes it your own, from giant balloons, floral arches and hanging displays to statement sleeves on wedding gowns and oversized headpieces; couples are going for the wow factor. With that in mind, this emerging trend became the inspiration for this edition with it being incorporated in several facets. Whether it was to draw attention to the bride with big, bold bridal gowns and exaggerated accessories or the use of oversize decor and statement elements in the style shoots to create a lasting impression – we’re looking to inspire each bride to tell her story in her way.

Despite our more traditional values and views on love and marriage, Mohammad and I met the modern non-traditional way, online. It started with a swipe and a click that led to more than a few conversations, and finally to a date that almost didn’t happen. At the time, Mohammad was in his final year of residency at Brown University and I was a dental student in Boston. We were burnt out and exhausted from our programs and from dating when we both decided to give online dating a chance. After matching and having our initial conversation, it took us months before deciding to meet in person. Even then it took us months before actually making it happen due to our demanding schedules. We finally settled on a meeting date, which happened to be a long weekend in the US where most people leave town for trips and vacations. I was so excited to finally meet the guy I had been talking to for months that I didn’t mind staying in town when most of my classmates left Boston. I decided to use the time to pamper myself and get ready for my big date. After getting my hair and nails done, shopping for a new outfit, and getting myself ready for a meeting that seemed long overdue, my excitement was crushed when Mohammad had to cancel hours before our set date due to car trouble. I quickly decided that it must have been a sign that it wasn’t meant to be and that I was more than likely being saved from imminent heartbreak anyway. Despite my decision to not give him another chance, after all I did get stood up the first time, Mohammad’s persistence convinced me to set up another date with him – to which he showed up! – and from then we became inseparable. Although the story of us meeting is far from a good romance story you read in novels or see in movies, online dating brought together a Persian girl raised in Georgia, living in Boston and a Persian born Torontonian, studying in Providence, who otherwise might have never met, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. After a few years of dating and moving together to Manchester, New Hampshire we decided to take a weekend trip to the city where we initially met, Boston, Massachusetts. Little did I know that on this trip, and apparently a few other trips, Mohammad was carrying around a ring waiting for the right opportunity to propose. He had asked my parents for permission and had purchased a ring months prior, but being the romantic that he is, he could not find a moment special enough to present the ring to me. He had promised himself that no matter what happens, rain or shine, he was not coming back with the ring in his pocket this time. And that is exactly what happened. After spending an amazing weekend in Boston, the morning we were leaving to come back to New Hampshire, Mohammad asked me to go on a walk with him near the Boston Harbor. It had started to lightly rain so my initial reaction was to say no. However, it is rare that Mohammad has such requests as walking in the rain and he seemed very eager for this particular walk so without resisting much further I agreed. Our walk took us from the North End to the Harbor and into a park where we took cover from the rain under a beautiful pergola. Mohammad handed our camera to the only other person in the park with us and promised one photo and then we could head back to our hotel. When he got down on one knee, I told him to stop tying his shoe and get up quickly so we don’t miss the photo. Although the details of everything to follow are a complete blur, the image of Mohammad down on one knee under the pergola with the mist of rain around us is a beautiful memory I will never forget.

A very special and memorable moment for us took place on the wedding day but actually came before the “I do’s. Mohammad and I had decided that we wanted the first time we see each other to be a private and intimate moment reserved just for the two of us. We did our first look in the Stanley Gardens at Hotel X Toronto, where Mohammad was waiting with his back towards me under the shade of a tree. I will never forget the butterflies and excitement as I walked towards him that day. The moment we locked eyes as he turned around was the single most memorable moment in both our lives. The pure emotions that ran through us as we stood there in the garden is something we will never forget.
34
When our wedding planner first asked us what style we were envisioning for the wedding, our immediate answer was “Modern. Definitely modern.” We thought we wanted a modern wedding without really knowing what that meant. But as the planning process continued, I remember being at a floral appointment when our planner finally said “You might think you want a modern wedding, but a lot of what you are drawn to is traditional.” Thus began our journey of mixing old and new, modern with traditional, and classic with contemporary. Some might call this confusion – and at moments we most definitely were! – but one thing that we knew for certain was that we wanted the overall feel of our large wedding to be intimate and romantic. With both of us being Persian, we kept the foundation of a traditional Persian ceremony, with some modern touches in the Sofreh. The ceremony was held outside in the courtyard of Chateau Le Parc under a pergola draped in a light and airy fabric surrounding the perimeter to give the outdoor space a more cozy and intimate feel.
35
Two of our favourite features of the venue were the tall ceilings and chandeliers. To accentuate this we draped the room, floor to ceiling, in white velvet which also helped guide the eye towards the beautiful chandeliers that added a touch of glam to the overall look. The addition of the white drapes and white dance floor gave us a clean and modern canvas to work with and allowed the rest of the decor to stand out. To counter all the white, we used accent lighting and candles to still keep the feel of the room warm and intimate while the tablesettings and stationery were kept elegant with a touch of colour.
36
For the reception, our floral arrangements set the mood and ambiance of the room. We wanted our flowers and colour pallete to feel elegant and timeless so we chose to have only roses in our wedding decor in shades of ivory, quicksand and sahara. To give our flowers a modern and unique touch, our amazing florist painted each individual rose leaf in the arrangements gold.

We first met in Cuba. I was their with my girlfriend and Jamal was at the same resort with his brothers, his cousin and a few friends. It was my first day and his last day in Cuba. We ran into each other and he asked me and my friend to hang out a couple of times but I ended up blowing him off. A year later coincidently we were both in Vegas where he once again asked me to hang out, still with no success. After Vegas, I continued to blow him off again until eventually his persistence paid off and I gave in and agreed to go on a date. We ended up going to a hookah bar and talking until after the place closed down. This became one of our most memorable moments and was the start of our journey together. Since Cuba was the first place we officially met, Jamal surprised me with a trip there, to the same resort. The last night there, we were dancing at the piano bar and at midnight he got down on one knee and proposed. It was so romantic!

We wanted our wedding and reception to be very romantic like A Midsummer‘s Night Dream but also English garden-esque. So we went with pale white colours to keep it very pretty and romantic.
40
I originally wanted a formfitting dress but tried on a different style just for fun, which I ended up falling in love with. I immediately thought of of Jamal and knew it was the one I should get married in and started crying. I ended up purchasing a second dress that was more formfitting for the reception. For Jamal we wanted something that was neutral but also something he would stand out in. If you look closely there are little hints of the groomsmens suits colour in his suit.
41
I would definitely recommend getting a wedding planner; she really helped us through the process as well as the day-of and got in touch with all of our vendors. There were a few hiccups along the way but overall we were happy. We really loved all the florals throughout and the live sax and trumpet players were also a huge hit.
42
One of our favourite details was the light fixture that we had above the dance floor. It was something we saw a lot in European weddings but never really saw here, so we wanted to recreate it and make it magical. Our first dance under those lights with the addition of sparklers was truly a memorable moment. It was really what we pictured and made the moment everything we dreamed of!

Lutfi and I first met seven years ago at a mutual friend’s birthday in downtown Toronto, but it wasn’t until about four years ago when Lutfi decided to take the first step and finally ask me on a date. Due to Lutfi’s passion for soccer, our first date took place at a Toronto FC game. We spent the first 90 minutes drinking beers, eating popcorn and chatting. Little did Lutfi know, that was his last time watching a soccer game live without me. We have been inseparable since our first date. Lutfi and I were in New York with my family spending a summer long weekend together. Lutfi was acting strange that entire weekend and it wasn’t until the very last night when we had just gotten back from a nice dinner when Lutfi suggested that we go check out an oyster bar down the street from our hotel – Lutfi and I both enjoy oysters and seafood so that was nothing out of the ordinary of him to ask. Before making our way to the bar we decided to take a walk around the streets of SoHo, as we approached a cute small street, Lutfi started walking towards the middle of the empty street and that’s when he went down on his knee and proposed – I was in complete and utter shock as I didn’t expect it to happen at all in that moment. Life hasn’t been the same since that day!

I’ve always had a passion for fashion. I had searched everywhere for the right dress and panicked when I thought I wouldn’t find it. Until I decided to give White Toronto a visit, the first dress I tried on which was a Galia Lahav dress, recommended to me by the wedding dress specialist was the one that I ended up choosing to wear on the day of my wedding. I knew I wanted a clean, sleek silhouette with a glamourous look and this was exactly that. Pairing this designer dress with a custom made removable overskirt using the same material added drama and dimension and brought the whole look together.
46
Lutfi and I opted out of a first look, so the moment the double church doors opened was the very first time we saw each other that day. This became one of our most memorable moments. Right before the ceremony as I walked down the aisle looking at Lutfi, as tears were falling down his face, that was the moment when it all felt real.
47
The inspiration for our reception was a beautiful romantic garden while still having it be modern. We incorporated large trees, beautiful white garden roses, a custom swing, a showstopping hanging floral ring above the dance floor and an abundance of candles to achieve this feel.
48
Hands down our favourite wedding details were the florals and decor. Our florist understood our vision perfectly and brought it to life in a way we would have never imagined. Since we trusted her so much, we were pretty hands off and let her do her thing. Our jaws dropped when we got to the venue and saw how everything came together, especially the hanging floral ring, our raised headtable that oozed our garden theme and our flawless custom made swing for the guests to enjoy. The entertainment and music also ranked high on our list of favourite details. Having live music during cocktail hour and dinner made for a romantic ambiance. While the DJ got everyone dancing, making it an unforgettable night as the party ended with guests dancing on tables.

One of my closest friends was away for university, and I went to go visit her – little did I know it would be a trip that changed my life. One night we decided to go out partying, and went to one of her friends’ house, who invited a larger group of people over, that’s where I first saw Tom. I remember him looking at me from across the room and I couldn’t help but look back. A few glances later, he came over and introduced himself, and we were inseparable the rest of the evening. As the night was ending, I began to wonder if this would be the only time we’d hang out, as we lived quite far from one another. While we were saying our goodbyes, Tom pulled me in close and kissed me. He stared into my eyes, paused for a moment and said “I have this feeling that I’m going to know you for a very long time.” He wasn’t wrong, we eventually started to live together in London, UK but moved back to our hometown – Toronto a couple years later. In the winter of that year we were celebrating our eighth year together, and he planned a romantic dinner followed by a Christmas light show at Casa Loma – a very special place for us because we’d often go there to see the views of the city. As we were leaving Tom completely surprised me with a beautiful proposal in front of the castle. Of course I said ‘Yes!’

For our ceremony design we wanted to create a romantic feel with a touch of luxury while incorporating some of our favourite colours – mine is pink and his is gold as he works in the gold industry. We loved the beautiful landscape of the gardens at Graydon Hall Manor and especially loved the long aisle to the alter. We incorporated small vases of peonies and floral arrangements throughout the design. We wanted to make the procession a grand, memorable moment that would get our guests excited, to do this, we had the groomsmen, ring bearers and Tom walk to the Game of Thrones theme song. The bridesmaids and flower girl followed, walking to Pachelbel: Canon in D, setting the stage for my walk to the traditional piece; Christina Perri: A Thousand Years.
52
We were inspired by fairytales for our outfits. I wore a custom made Galia Lahav dress “Aelin” from the Queen of Hearts collection. The gown had everything I was envisioning – sparkle, glamour and a long train for a dramatic procession. This in combination with the additional sparkle from the jewellery and tiara brought my fairytale to life. My bouquet was full and lush with white ranunculus, lsymanchia, delphinium, freesia, spray roses, morning glory and blush and white peonies with vine hand-tied and a blush ribbon wrap. While the bridesmaids wore floor length blush dresses to match the colour pallete of the wedding and carried smaller bouquets matching mine. Tom and the groomsmen wore classic black tuxedos and bowties with boutonnieres of white snow flake spray roses with a touch of olive to create an elegant, formal look.
53
We wanted our reception to be very romantic with a whimsical feel. Keeping this in mind, we had rectangular tables with floral arrangements placed down the centre of the terrace with an abundance of candles throughout. The canopy tent had ivory chiffon draping with trees growing through it and chandeliers hanging down the centre. The large centerpieces featured hundreds of ivory and blush peonies, white majolica spray roses, white stock and blush ranunculus with lots of olive leaves and Italian ruscus spilling out the side to create lots of volume; which were accented with smaller vases of peonies for a lush look. For the headtable, a beautiful five foot floral arch ran down the centre using florals that matched the centerpieces with the addition of hanging blush orchids to create a floral frame for Tom and I.
54
The cocktail hour took place around the iconic Casa Loma fountain where guests were served signature drinks, hors d’oeuvre and canapÊs while live musicians played romantic favourites. The area had cocktail tables dressed in blush linens and hundreds of candles cascading the edges of the staircase leading up to the terrace where a gold frame accented with lush greens and peonies styled to match the centerpieces housed the seating chart.

Brian and I met at the bank seven years ago, I was a customer service rep and he was a client at the time. During the first three years, I was in a relationship and so was he. We both happened to end our relationship around the same time and after finding out he was single, I mentioned to my assistant branch manager how handsome I thought he was. One Saturday, my assistant branch manager had asked him how he spent his Valentine’s and he mentioned having had spent it alone as he was recently single; so she said, “Hey you know Krystal is recently single and I think you two will look great together!” Then the following Saturday, Brian came in and waited for me to be free to help him with his transaction. We chit chatted and at the end of the conversation he asked me out to the Raptors games, and I said yes. I had casually mentioned to my mom that I had accepted a date and she expressed to me that she thought it was too soon, as I had just ended a relationship a couple of months ago. So I decided to cancel the date and told Brian that I had changed my mind because of the break up and he understood. Later I found myself thinking of him and decided to change my mind again. Best decision I’ve made! After having dated for a while, we were travelling through Spain and Portugal on a trip, and towards the end of it, we were in the north part of Portugal on a beautiful hike up a mountain that overlooked the landscape and rivers, once we got to the top we were so amazed and started shouting out some words and phrases to hear our echoes bounce off other mountains and hear it go so far. And that’s when Brian shouted “Will you marry me?” and to hear it echo was truly amazing. He got down on one knee, and I screamed out “Yes!” He had it all planned out but I never expected it in that moment because every other time on that trip we were out at restaurants or doing something romantic, I thought it would be the day but he had me fooled every time.

For our wedding, Brian and I decided to bring the outdoors, indoors. We had trees, planters, vines and floral arches all inside the Liberty Grand. For the colours we decided to stay with a neutral, earthy vibe using beige, white, rose, green and light pink.
58
Ever since I was a little girl I always imagined myself looking like Cinderella on my wedding day. Keeping that in mind I went for a puffy ball gown inspired by the fairytale. Whereas Brian went for the classic classy look, black on white and bow tie.

We first met at a real estate gala where I approached Anthony at the bar. We talked the entire evening and exchanged business cards at the end of the night. A few days after meeting, he texted asking if I wanted to get together – we laugh now, but I took 48 hours to respond to his message. We went on our first date and when he took me for Nutella pizza and coffee, I knew he was going to be the one and we’ve been inseparable ever since. He says he called his best friend right after the date and told him that he knew I was the woman he was going to marry. Anthony took me to Montreal for my birthday and I was suspecting he’d propose, but the first night there he surprised me with diamond earrings, so I figured that was the end of the gift giving for that weekend. But he had other surprises in store. While in the hotel room, the concierge called informing us that the room was causing a leak in the room below and we were to transfer to another room the following day. The next afternoon we got the call that our new room was ready. I walked into a two-storey loft style suite filled with rose petals, candles and a huge arrangement of my favourite bougainvillea flowers. Again, because of the distraction with the diamond earrings, the proposal was still completely out of the question for me. I walked around the suite saying “WOW”, what an elaborate apology from the hotel. Anthony stayed quiet, wondering when I would clue in that it was all a setup. Finally, he grabbed me, expressed his love and got down on one knee, and of course I said, Yes! Anthony had also arranged dinner at our favourite restaurant, Le Bremner, not only do we love the food but it also holds significance because it’s where we first said we loved one another. When we walked in both of our immediate families yelled, Surprise! They all came to Montreal to celebrate our engagement. That was the moment Anthony was successful in getting me to cry.

When I first started shopping for wedding dresses, I was convinced that I would end up with something off the shoulder, netted, high slit and ultra trendy, but when I started to try them on, I just didn’t feel like a bride in those dresses. So when I walked into my appointment at Amandalina’s, they informed me that an up-and-coming designer, Yaniv Persy, was having a trunk show at their bridal boutique. As soon as I put on the designer dress, I knew it was the one! I loved the lace, low neckline, pearl buttons going down the back and removable sleeves which gave me two different looks. Although, it wasn’t what I had initially envisioned, the dress was more than I could have ever imagined. Whereas Anthony wanted a bespoke suit that was classic and timeless. His custom diamond bowtie is what really elevated his look.
64
Our favourite moment from the wedding is when our flash mob gospel choir stood up and started singing during our marriage license signing, it was amazing to see the reaction of our family and friends in that moment.
65
We really wanted to have an outdoor wedding, indoors – which is what the inspiration for our reception was. The venue was more on the modern side with 30 foot ceilings, so to create a more intimate feel, we incorporated trees and greenery, a floral suspension above the headtable, tall candelabras, staggered candles and suspended string lighting over the dance floor; this added height, dimension and warmth to such a grand space. Adding to this garden feel, we included natural elements such as wooden Grace and Louis Ratton chairs, as well as the Rattan white wash chargers. It was important for us to have a neutral colour palette to keep the overall look and feel timeless.
66
Listening to the speeches was definitely a highlight for us. We told our siblings, maid of honour and best man to save the heartfelt stuff for the cards and instead, asked them to roast us... and boy, did they ever roast us!

Playing with the size and scale of florals is the inspiration of this shoot; combining the delicate pink blooms with the unexpected and bold scale of the gold coloured palm leaves elevates this classic wedding palette from lovely to larger than life. The crisp white chrysanthemum balls and soft pink roses pop against the massive winding gold leaves to create a showstopping floral arch way ready to welcome the blushing bride.

The regalness of Toronto’s St. Georges Golf and Country Club, with its gilded mirrors, turrets and balcony set the stage for this romantic Rapuzel inspired shoot. A lingering bride with the elements of a golden key from a vintage hope chest, wax dripped candelabra, antique jewellery tray and glass ring box are combined to all harken back to an unhurried era; a guided age of stone fireplaces, chandeliers and candles. The bride dressed in a modern style gown with hints of old world lace, white begonias gracing her long braided hair, and a golden tiara crown her head with matching drop marquise leaf earrings.
91
The crisp touches of deep gold and black linen lend a modern twist; a beautiful blend of old meets new. Old world white begonias and light blush roses meet new world angel-winged pampas grass, and gold-tipped feathers.

FIT FOR A KING g u ys g e t c e l e b r i t y t r e at m e n t at n o r t h a m e r i c a’s first suit shop for grooms
James Bond’s Albert Thurston suspenders, Kanye West’s favourite ties by Drake’s London and the Holland & Sherry vintage barathea shirt and Barneys New York stud sets worn by Barack Obama at his wedding are just a few of the accoutrements available to guys at Garrison Weddings - Garrison Bespoke’s luxe new Toronto shop devoted exclusively to grooms and their groomsmen. The first of its kind in North America and located in Toronto’s iconic Omni King Edward Hotel, Garrison Weddings gives husbands-to-be the kind of royal treatment women have been treated to for centuries. “Wedding culture has become so focused on the bride that the groom is often an afterthought. Tablecloths and dinnerware are often given more attention than the groom’s outfit, so it is our vision to change that. We not only give men the best-looking, best-fitting suits for their wedding days but also the bespoke experience they deserve leading up to it,” said Michael Nguyen, owner of Garrison Bespoke. Garrison Weddings offers private, byappointment-only experiences where grooms and their brides-to-be or their groomsmen sip champagne or scotch and listen to

their favourite music while perusing the largest selection of fabrics and formal wear accessories for men in Canada. Each groom then begins a five-fitting design process with a personal stylist who helps him select fabrics, colour schemes and details to complement his skin tone, personal style and wedding theme, while one of Garrison Bespoke’s Master Tailors ensures the perfect fit. Garrison Bespoke suits and tuxedos are designed to make grooms look sharp down the aisle and sleek in photos while still being flexible and comfortable enough to allow them to do the splits at the reception and carry the bride over the threshold. Garrison grooms are in good company. Since opening its first location at King Street and Yonge Street in Toronto in 2008, Garrison Bespoke has attracted Toronto’s most influential figures in business, finance, law, sports, fashion to book an appointment and food and entertainment with a st ylist, call 416-566-2041 including the cast of Suits and Hannibal, The Toronto Blue Jays, The Toronto Raptors, The Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto FC and Drake to name a few.
