Student homelessness and food insecurity rates high in California community colleges Yami Sun STAFF REPORTER

She is not currently enrolled in any classes at De Anza College because she needs to work three jobs to cover necessities.

“I have at least one student each quarter who told me that she wasn’t able to complete our assignments because she has housing insecurities, said James Nguyen, political science department chair.

AB 302, sponsored by California legislator Marc Berman, would require community colleges that have parking facilities to grant overnight access to any homeless student who is enrolled in coursework, has paid enrollment fees and is in good standing with the college.

The bill would require the governing board of the community college district to determine a plan of action to implement this requirement.

Nguyen said that 25 or 30 students from De Anza and Foothill College found out about Assembly Bill 302 as they were preparing to go to Sacramento for an advocacy and policy conference in March.

At the 2019 Spring Plenary Session, the academic senate for California community colleges supported AB 302.

The session recommended local senates work with their colleges and districts to identify a housing assistance representative as part of student support programs and services to help students locate emergency shelter and affordable student housing.

“We should be helping our most vulnerable students however we can,” said Karen Chow, academic senate president. “We have parking lots and facilities that could be purposed for this newly escalating and growing student need.”

“Homelessness is a real issue facing our students at De Anza, Foothill and throughout the entire state for that matter,” said Nguyen.

Run, hide, defend trains students in school safety Dominique Evangelistsa STAFF REPORTER

Jim Thurber, police officer and speaker, provided a safe dose of fear and a call for awareness to a De Anza College English class with a safety training about what to do in an “active assailant” event on April 17.

Thurber addressed the recent school shootings and urged students to be aware of their surroundings.

He called on students to share their fears and concerns about the frequency of school shootings.

Students were familiarized with the mind of an “active assailant” and learned the different possibilities during an attack, how to respond and how a person could prevent such an event from happening.

“I’m pretty fearless,” said Vivian Pride, 19, social sciences major, about how she feels around campus.

“This is such an important discussion topic that the more students, faculty and staff that get involved and give up that 50 minutes of their day,” Thurber said. “It’s so empowering. It can help them out everywhere.”

Thurber said the usual turnout can be up to three people, covering only 2-3% of the Foothill-De Anza population.

Thurber said those students or faculty that could not make the training should take the time to watch their video and think about safety.

“Lack a situational awareness and you are in deep danger,” he said. “You have to be aware of everything.”

Ricci said other community colleges were trying to implement similar security when they met in Sacramento.

Foothill-De Anza Chief of Police Danny Acosta said the idea to install security cameras in De Anza parking lots raises more questions than answers.

“But I think there needs to be a lot more conversation behind it,” Acosta said. “From

my perspective, my concern is safety for everybody.”

Acosta said campuses are basically closed from midnight to 6 a.m. and safety services are unavailable at that time.

Nguyen said AB 302 does not directly address the housing crisis and other problems such as expensive rent, home prices and the lack of affordable housing.

“It provides a temporary solution for students who are currently living in their cars to be able to park somewhere that’s safe,” said Nguyen.

“For now, I’m just going to keep working at the job I’m working at, especially when things are settled,” Curcio said.

“If I get promoted, or I have a steady income, I’m going to try to go back to school and probably take online courses.”

DASB senate debates public, private office to remain organized Mehek Kapur STAFF REPORTER

DASB senators debated whether the office should stay open to the public or become a private space at their April 17 meeting.

DASB President Carolyn Nguyen and the dissolved administration committee started a motion to implement a shame board to help keep the office clean.

“If we see someone making a mess in the office, we will warn them not to do it again,” said Nguyen. “If we see it again, we

will take their photo and hang it on the Dirty Don Shame Board and hang it in the office.”

Many senators objected to the motion, calling it a humiliating and useless solution.

“It’s just shameful. I think there’s a better way. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t think we should shame people to create change,” said senator Brandi Madison. “I would be embarrassed if the president of De Anza saw this being implemented.”

The office was made public last spring, and according to some senators, has since become

disruptive and messy.

The possibility of banning specific students was previously raised, but did not pass.

The debate over the shame board raised the issue of professionalism and conduct within the DASB senate.

“I’m less concerned about the mess and more concerned about our conduct,” said senator Jeff Lydon. “It’s not professional.”

The motion to implement the Dirty Don Shame Board was overruled but DASB intends to continue discussing possible solutions in upcoming meetings.

No placement tests or prerequisites can risk higher failure rates at transfer level APRIL 29, 2019

Students can now register in transfer level courses such as EWRT 1A, precalculus, and statistics without taking any prerequisites and placement tests with the AB705 bill.

The bill requires community colleges to “maximize the probability that the student will enter and complete transferlevel coursework in English and mathematics within a one-year timeframe.”

“Maybe they can only take transfer level math in their first quarter and in their second quarter they take English instead,” said Mallory Newell, supervisor of De Anza institutional research and planning. “So they have seven

units of math and they are done with math and that’s as far as they want to go.”

AB705 suggests courses based on high school transcripts.

Students with a higher GPA can take the regular course while students with lower GPA are recommended to take an equivalent course and a supportive two-unit corequisite course.

“It is more work on the student, more hours, but in the life of their college career, that’s more hours this quarter, better chance to pass, and less quarters of math overall because they don’t have the prerequisite work,” said Cheryl Balm, Math Performance Success professor.

Student senators in California Community Colleges are advocating for strict language policy changes in school legislation, including Foothill-De Anza, prohibiting relationships among students and faculty.

Policies in Foothill-De Anza legislation state employees are expected to act in accordance with ethical conduct, district policy and procedure, according to Dorene Novotny, vice-chancellor of human resources and equal opportunities.

But there is no current antifraternization policies in district legislation prohibiting against consensual relationships.

“Consensual relationships between two adults is not prohibited,” said Novotny.

“Though, we caution employees, especially faculty, about entering into such relationships with students, noting the risk inherent if at any time the relationship is no longer consensual.”

Lawrence Su, chair of legislative affairs, first brought this issue up at the Jan. 30 DASB senate meeting.

He noticed how other public and private universities in California all had legislation with specific language prohibiting relationships between students and faculty.

Su said how morally and ethically wrong it is that California Community Colleges do not have the same language in the legislation.

“For some reason, the largest public educational system institution in the country made up of 2.1 million California

community college students, doesn’t have any regulation for that,” Su said.

The DASB senate approved to endorse the policy with no objections during that same meeting.

Endorsed by the senate, Su brought the resolution to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges which voted to adopt the resolution with a 29-18 majority vote with one abstention at the general assembly meeting on April 5.

The adopted resolution pushes to implement regulations within legislation to prohibit studentteacher relationships.

for much and they modeled it after policies from Stanford and MIT. Now that the resolution was approved by SSCCC, Su said the next step is getting faculty, including the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, on board with the resolution.

Tim Shively, president of the Foothill-De Anza Faculty Association, said he knows about recent cases involving complaints about sexual relations with faculty and agrees the issue needs to be addressed.

Shively said that most of the faculty he knows would support the resolution, but that there always will be people who won’t support it.

“It’s hard to get a complete census on anything,” he said.

Shively also said this legislation wouldn’t discourage faculty who try to extend the learning experience outside of the classroom.

“I know of several faculty who have invited their students for barbeques,” he said. “I think that that’s a potentially valuable experience for a college student is to take it outside the classroom in a more socially friendly environment.”

But he said it shouldn’t be a one-on-one kind of thing, but rather a chance to open up and ask more questions.

Su will be pushing for the antifraternization policy and he said he hopes he can get both students and faculty to push for the change in order to keep students safe.

“At the end of the day,” Su said, “it’s all for the protection of California Community College students.”

Some colleges that have implemented AB705 and opened transfer level courses to more students have seen success rates decrease with higher enrollment.

Without placement tests, more students enroll in transfer-level classes, but the percentage of students who actually pass the classes may decrease.

For example, 556 students successfully completed a statistics class in Fall 2018 with open enrollment, compared to

438 students who completed the class in Fall 2017 when students were placed.

But because there were so many more total students in Fall 2018, the overall rate of success declined from 71% in Fall 2017 to 62% the next year.

“You have more students passing because more students have access to the class but your overall success rate may go down,” said Newell. “Since there is a bigger pool of students, more students have access and the possibility of passing.”

“We do feel very constrained and frustrated but we are really trying to do the best we can,” said Balm.

Courses supported by AB705 will be offered in Fall 2019.

Scabies outbreak puts select VTA buses out of service

An outbreak of the parasitic skin infection scabies among drivers in the Valley Transportation Authority put several buses out of service.

After many VTA bus drivers refused to respond to questions from La Voz, one VTA driver, who remains anonymous, said that the busses contaminated with scabies were not safe for drivers or passengers.

The driver said many operators were surprised a scandal like the scabies outbreak did not happen sooner because of the VTA maintenance team’s poor work.

“I just think that we need to be more sanitized, more sanitary,” the driver said.

The driver said contaminated buses were moved to select yards for extermination.

Bus rider Alan Ngai, 19, global studies major, said scabies is scary and contagious but not dangerous.

Ngai said that he could protect himself by staying informed and wearing long sleeves.

Guadalupe Arellano, 18, criminal justice major, said she was not aware of the scabies scandal on VTA busses. She said she will be more cautious about where she sits now that she is aware.

Mary Sullivan, De Anza health education and wellness director, said accurate information should be available on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Former student Zheng Yuan adds a fresh take on Chinese cuisine and heartbreak with his short film “When an Egg Meets a Tomato,” directed and produced during his time at De Anza College.

Yuan’s short film narrates a poem connecting the traditional Chinese platter of eggs and tomato to the end of a relationship with drama and comedy.

Yuan plays a lonely man who reminisces about his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, comparing their love to that of an egg and a tomato, questioning if they were ingredients to a perfect dish.

“I wanted the humor to be more subtle, and find something in between,” Yuan said. “Watching my film at home alone could highlight the drama and sadness more, but it depends. People’s perception of film changes.”

Jonathan Fung, a professor at San Jose State University who previously worked for Cinequest as part of the Short Film Program, praised Yuan’s film.

“It was one of my favorite student shorts. It’s refreshing, clever, unexpected and almost absurd,” Fung said. He praised Yuan’s peculiar story and simplistic approach.

Yuan studied film for two years and praised De Anza’s film department. “For a film major, De Anza has everything you need,” he said. “Professors definitely prepared me well.”

Yuan’s film was featured at this year’s Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival, a 12-day festival

showcasing independent student films, where over 90 national and international films premiered.

The Cinequest Student Short Program showcased 14 films directed by high school and college students. This year’s film lineup premiered over 90 national and international films.

Terry Gascay, a San Jose resident who has attended the last five Cinequest festivals, said the student shorts stood out more this year than in previous years.

Gascay pointed out the considerably darker tones of this year’s student films along with how “extreme and over-the-top” they were.

Student director Bismark Fernandez said that creating his first stop-motion short, “Expend,” required him to take on new responsibilities, such as lighting, fabricating, designing sets and leading a film team.

The Student Short Program’s showcase began with a screening of “Atlas Liquors,” directed by Adam Geiser, a 17-year-old director attending Oakland School for the Arts.

The film depicts a doctor who buys alcohol for a minor after work, only for the doctor to find the minor in his hospital the next day.

“A lot of my films have that undertone,” said Geiser. He described his group of friends as “reckless” and said he ultimately “wants them to be safe.”

Geiser said Cinequest gave him a “big confidence boost,” which helped him work with other filmmakers and actors.

The next Cinequest film festival is set to take place again in March 2020.

Kirsch’s vertical garden fosters sustainability

Tucked away in the back garden of the De Anza College Kirsch Center stands a wooden box holding soil-filled plastic water bottles. These bottles compose a vertical garden, although only a few native wildflowers grow out of them.

“We don’t use any pesticides or chemicals or anything,” said Mehran Karimi, lab technician at the Kirsch Center. “All we use are organic soil and manure.”

Karimi, who participated in the environmental studies program in 2014, said he and his friend Nic Kasperee wanted to start a vertical garden in the Kirsch Center after studying the garden’s

The two applied for the DASB Environmental Sustainability Committee Eco Fund, which provided the bottles that hold the garden’s wildflowers.

As part of their campaign for the Eco Fund, Karimi and Kasperee visited classrooms and shared garden concept with students.

Karimi said they wanted to promote the message that “not everything recycled is upcycled,” and that they wanted the garden to be a positive example of how recyclable items can be used for a better purpose.

The garden was officially completed in 2017. Karimi said he hopes to incorporate succulents in to the garden, along with other drought-friendly plants.

We all know physical activity encourages normal growth/ development and helps us feel better function better, sleep better, while reducing the risk of a many chronic diseases.

But many students feel they don’t have time to exercise!

New guidelines show health benefits can occur when you take advantage of even short episodes of physical activity.

New guidelines (tinyurl. com/exercise-HHS) shows the importance of “moving more and sitting less.”

Yes, I know we knew that but the evidence goes further indicating even a little bit of physical activity incorporated into our day, of any intensity level gives great health benefits.

It can be the 30 minutes brisk walk to and from the bus/car 5 times a week. It can also be 75 minutes a week of vigorousintensity (running, cardio or spinning class).

Take the “talk test” to know the intensity of your workout.

During a moderate workout, you can talk during exercise, but not sing. During a vigorous workout, you can say a few words, between breaths. You need to identify how

intensive an activity is for you.

For an overall workout, remember to do musclestrengthening activities that involve all major muscle groups (arms, shoulders, chest, back, abdomen, hips and legs) on two or more days a week, as these activities provide additional health benefits.

Exercise tubes or resistance bands are cheap, small, and easy to fit in a backpack to help with muscle strengthening.

While waiting for the bus or for class to start, you can do bicep curls or chest presses to fit in fitness throughout the day.

While a single event of activity can bring short term benefits (reduced blood pressure and anxiety, improve blood sugar, cholesterol, sleep and certain cognitive functions), long term benefits include lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression and bladder/breast and colon cancer.

Exercise improves bone health, weight control, quality of life and improves functioning with many chronic illness/disabilities. Any exercise counts as good, whether it is intense, or short and sweet.

Look for ways to get your daily dose of exercise and invite a friend to join you!

Climate change: An emergency that demands immediate action Thomas Anthony STAFF REPORTER

In the summer of 2050, the Arctic Ocean will be ice-free.

Seven hundred million people will lose their homes, according to top UN scientists.

Last year, wildfires in California took over 100 lives, cost the state more than $11.4 billion and burned almost 2 million acres of land.

What was the most disastrous wildfire season in the state’s history will become commonplace in the coming years, according to National Geographic.

If no action is taken, global warming is projected to lead to 23% lower average global incomes by 2100, according to Nature.

Communities will struggle to access necessary resources to survive, and will be less able to prepare for more frequent and severe natural disasters.

Flooding alone is estimated to be “300% to 900% more frequent within US coastal communities” than 50 years ago, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Paris Agreement aimed to limit “the increase in the global

average temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius” to avoid irreversible catastrophe.

This means that we need to bring our global carbon emission to net zero by 2050.

We must take action as soon as possible because all our current inaction is further worsening the issue.

Many people argue that humans cannot stop climate change.

Therefore, they say we should wait to spend our money dealing with the aftermath of it, rather than trying to prevent the inevitable.

This position is foolhardy.

The longer we wait to counteract climate change, the greater the price we will have to pay.

Every day that passes where we do not consciously try to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions on the planet means more refugees, more famine, more disasters and more death in the future.

Anything less than our most earnest, concentrated efforts at reducing the rate of climate change is simply unacceptable.

De Anza needs to provide overnight parking Thomas Anthony STAFF REPORTER

If De Anza College stands by its mission to provide the best possible education to its students, it needs to support its most vulnerable members by providing overnight parking for homeless and housing-insecure students.

With a homeless student population of around 18% according to a 2018 De Anza survey, the college would go a long way in realizing its vision, as stated on De Anza’s website, to “empower all students to attain their educational goals” by merely

providing a place for students to sleep in their cars overnight.

Homelessness and the stress caused by not knowing where to sleep hinders students’ academic success, according to a 2015 report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Homeless students not only have to worry about finding shelter every night, but deal with food insecurity, health and hygienic issues and financial troubles. This can increase the stress levels and have a biological impact on the brain, hindering academic success, according to a 2014 HOPE lab study.

Time spent finding shelter could instead be used by students to focus on coursework or address any of the other challenges they must deal with.

In De Anza’s statement of values, the college says it welcomes “students of all ages and backgrounds… in their range of unique circumstances, to help them fulfill their dreams.”

By opening parking overnight for students who truly need it, De Anza could show its students and the public that it values all students, regardless of whether they have reliable shelter or not. This might attract

prospective students who want to get a valuable education at an institution that cares about them, and elevate De Anza’s standing within the community.

It is ridiculous to think that by allowing overnight parking, De Anza would somehow stray outside of its mission of providing an environment for all students to receive an enriching education.

De Anza needs to act in the best interests of its students, and doing so requires opening overnight parking to homeless and housinginsecure students, who have little, if any, alternative options.

DASB senate members should receive a stipend to compensate for their advocacy work. This would provide an incentive for participation and encourage more equitable representation.

At the May 1 DASB senate meeting, I will seek endorsement for a resolution to pursue possible compensation options for DASB senators and executives. The proposed payment will come in the form of a monthly stipend contingent on attendance at senate, shared governance and senate committee meetings.

The proposed stipends would provide $300 per month for executives and $100 per month to senators, requiring an annual budget of $34,200.

The source of the funding remains to be determined.

Funding may come from the college, or perhaps from a grant through the Foothill-De Anza Foundation.

Ideally, this modest financial assistance would allow students to spend more time on student advocacy, as well as provide an imperative for accountability and participation as a student leader.

Although $100 or $300 per month probably is not enough to pay local rent, it may help reduce financial burdens for students whose jobs take up time that might be spent on campus.

As student trustee, I receive a $450 monthly stipend from the district. This compensation is contingent on my presence at the single monthly Board of Trustees meeting — less than what would be required of senators and executives.

Personally, I would be unable to serve as student trustee if not for this stipend, which pays my rent and allows me to be active on campus and in my classes.

Our most active representatives spend hours every day in meetings, presenting to classes and committees, facilitating events and carrying out due diligence, sending emails and creating agendas.

Many DASB senators advocate at the regional and state level, proposing policy and making trips to Sacramento to testify on behalf of community college students.

Student representation is made possible by unpaid labor. As we clamor for increased student involvement in governance processes and college planning, compensating student leaders is a way to validate the work.

College admissions process corrupted by wealth, legacy

Banned books are some of the best books because they provide readers with controversial and complex themes while pushing conversations that society calls taboo.

For decades, outraged parents attempted to ban books because of sensitive topics like racism, violence, offensive language or sex.

However, some of the most notable banned books, like “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “Brave New World,” “1984,” “Fahrenheit 451” and “Kite Runner,” became classics.

These books provide opportunities for readers to view and experience life outside of the norm. People want to ban books that include sensitive topics, but those books help others who might feel alone in their struggles.

Take a look at a novel like “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which was

banned for offensive language and racism. Yet since its release in 1960, the book remains relevant to this day.

As a high schooler, discussing the impact of racism and other sensitive topics helped me become a more caring and understanding person.

Similarly, the ability to have an open discussion about suicide after reading “Thirteen Reasons Why” holds great importance for anyone wanting to discuss topics that most people consider taboo.

High schoolers are exposed to issues such as suicide, bullying and sexual assault, but rarely get to discuss them. A book like “Thirteen Reasons Why” could help students affected by social pressures and give them the courage to reach out for help.

Books that push the boundaries of what people consider acceptable in today’s society only help us grow and connect with each other.

In light of the FBI’s Operation Varsity Blues, which revealed parents across the country bribing coaches, SAT test proctors and other college admissions officials as well as staging scores and extracurricular activities at various top colleges, a large portion of the public outcry that resulted has been directed at the parents and officials.

In particular, William Singer, a man who ran a business to help students get ahead has been implicated and has plead guilty to four charges in federal court has faced the brunt of the outrage.

However, in the storm of all the anger directed at William Singer and the parents he helped, the general public seems to be missing one major piece of the puzzle, the place where their anger should be redirected.

colleges while still demonizing affirmative action.

Although the parents are to blame for committing fraud, they are far from the first to pay their way into admissions, and they certainly are nowhere near the last.

In the 2000s, 4-5% of admitted freshmen at Dartmouth and over 100 students a year at Brown were given special consideration due to sizable donations, enough to have them admitted with an SAT score up to 500 points below the school’s 25th percentile.

These numbers are significantly higher than the 50 parents who committed fraud to admit their children, and yet, the hundreds of parents who donate their way into universities are being overlooked in favor of this scandal.

This isn’t the first time donors have been overlooked.

A group called Students For Fair Admissions filed a lawsuit against Harvard last year due to the belief that their affirmative action policy is unfair and causes Asian-Americans to be discriminated against.

It is rare that a spot get “stolen” by another student due to affirmative action, while donors and legacy admits take up a larger number of seats.

In fact, a study found legacy admits are five times as likely to receive admission at Harvard.

The fundamental flaws of the college admission system are not in William Singer, Olivia Jade, Lori McLaughlin or any of the other people who now find themselves in the center of a media storm.

It’s in the system that we’ve allowed to let the rich cheat for years, and it needs to be put into question as much as the people we blame for stealing spots.

‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’ challenges players in insanely difficult samurai sandbox APRIL 29, 2019

“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” challenges both skilled and novice gamers in a dynamic samurai-era themed battlefield filled with revenge and spikes in difficulty.

“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” is a thirdperson action adventure game developed by FromSoftware and published by Activision.

The player assumes control over Sekiro, a samurai left for dead who seeks vengeance over the man who kidnapped his master.

Inspired by sixteenth century Japanese history, the world of “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” has landscapes ranging from autumn reed forests, haunted Japanesethemed temples and infested caves filled with abominations.

Despite the game’s realistic samurai soldiers lurking in these locations, the game surprisingly introduced mythical monstrosities such as massive disgusting bugs and a towering serpent seeking to devour anything it comes across.

Customization based on the character’s appearance is limited. It is a detail that should have been implemented in order to include different costumes based on the old samurai era.

Sekiro, the titular character, wears the same standard armor and same katana, which may feel dreary and dull for players IMAGE VIA IGN.COM who wish to appear different.

Instead, customization is emphasized with Sekiro’s abilities that branch off of a massive skill tree. These numerous abilities tie in with Sekiro’s strategies to defeat difficult boss battles.

The game’s combat system combines strategic swordplay action with Sekiro’s katana and prosthetic arm and a tactical stealth mechanic leading to brutal execution and assassination attacks.

Sekiro can use a grappling hook and other bombastic abilities with his prosthetic to eliminate his targets. Enemies have a posture mechanic that can be exploited to throw them off guard, which leads to some gory finishing moves.

As the title suggests, death is a heavy part of the game’s mechanics solely based on its frustrating difficulty and struggling learning curves. However, after overcoming obstacles, you are rewarded with new unlockable abilities and an intense feeling of accomplishment.

“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” is an absolute masterpiece that kicks off the year as one of the greatest difficult action games.

It is worth a buy for its intense combat style alone, but just prepare to die.

Google Stadia game streaming looks unpromising

Google Stadia, a cloud-based gaming service announced at the Game Developers Conference on March 19, may not improve on current subscription platforms because of latency and quality concerns.

Stadia promises games played in 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second on any device with Google Chrome installed.

It is set to release in late 2019, according to Google.

The concept of cloud-based gaming was explored without success before by companies who dedicated their entire focus to live streaming services, and Google Stadia may suffer from the same problems.

In 2009, Palo Alto-based company OnLive was expected to “disrupt the entire video game industry,” according to tech publication VentureBeat.

Just like Google Stadia, OnLive promised to deliver games with no discs, installs or heavy lifting involved.

OnLive needed to perfect their service by adding to their catalog and improving

bandwidth according to Kotaku.

The company never fixed these problems and is now defunct.

Stadia will most likely repeat OnLive’s mistakes and suffer specifically from input lag, which is the delay between pressing a button and the game reacting to the input while streaming a video game.

This will be a major problem for multiplayer video games that require precise timing and aiming, such as “Fortnite: Battle Royale” and “Call of Duty.”

Even one or two seconds of delay will be noticeable and detrimental to all players.

Consumers would have no reason to leave gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and switch to Stadia if Google can not provide a polished and consistent experience.

The idea to to play video games on almost any device with no physical discs required is definitely the future of gaming, but the framework needed for a pleasurable cloud-based experience is nothing but a dream for now.

‘The Curse of La Llorona’ unoriginal yet spooky Bryan Vo

“The Curse of La Llorona” is filled with shocking scares but lacks a solid identity, diluting Mexican folklore with horror tropes.

This horror film, directed by Michael Chaves, follows Child Protective Services worker Anna Tate-Garcia, played by Linda Cardellini, and her two children as she investigates the disappearance of two boys and uncovers information about the mythical ghost of La Llorona.

Director Michael Chaves fills “La Llorona” with quiet moments of suspense and shocking jump-scares.

The cast, including the child actors, offer fantastic performances. However, the script and dialogue making the film exceedingly predictable and cheesy.

Horror tropes make “La Llorona” excruciatingly predictable. When characters act stupid only for the sake of the plot, the children see La Llorona but do not tell their mother until much later.

This rejection of realism completely breaks immersion. All of these characters are stereotypical nonsensical horror characters.

The film borrows plot points from horror films like “The Exorcist” and does not take enough risks to make the film unique.

It features a religious or spiritual cleansing of the demon from their home, which is familiar and predictable for any horror fan.

If “La Llorona” embraced its Mexican folklore by setting the story in Mexico rather than Los Angeles, the writers would not have to borrow so heavily from “The Conjuring” just to make their film entertaining.

Despite following a formulalic storyline, “The Curse of La Llorona” is an enjoyable thrill ride that provides great scares for audiences.

Poor weather, sickness and injury could not keep the De Anza College men’s and women’s track and field teams down this season, as both teams said they are looking forward to competing in the Coast Conference Championships.

Head coach Nick Mattis said the season has been progressing well, despite the problems the teams have experienced.

“The girls have only been beaten by one junior college team

all year in a meet,” said Mattis.

“The guys have been consist among the top junior colleges in Northern California, even with all the adversity we’ve had.”

Though the team was not at full strength throughout the season, Mattis said the players’ depth of talent allowed the team to consistently succeed.

“For the women, the 400 hurdlers are really good,” Mattis said. “All four of them are ranked in the top eight in Northern California and in the top 15 in the

state.”

The men’s team scored high points in 800 meter races, said Mattis.

Thrower Melissa Favorite, 19, political science major, is ranked number one in the state in discus and number three in the hammer throw.

expected all her teammates to set personal records.

Bouzigues said he is hopeful for a successful end to the season after improving his decathlon score by 500 points since last year.

He said athletes still have time to improve before the last meets of the season.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, and I’m still trying to improve,” said Bouzigues.

“There’s always more that I can improve on.”

De Anza College students and staff mourn the loss and remember the life of assistant football coach Nate Garnica, who died on March 17.

He succumbed to heart failure at his grandmother’s house and was unable to be revived, head football coach Tony Santos said.

He was 34 years old.

He coached at De Anza for a little over one year, after playing for the team in 2008 and 2010, Santos said. He also coached Junior Varsity football and was an assistant wrestling coach at Andrew P. Hill High School in San Jose.

Garnica always radiated a positive attitude and was an eternal optimist, said Santos.

These traits helped he connect with the students he coached and he shared this attitude with everyone.

“He genuinely cared for the kids,” Santos said. “He reached out to a lot of kids on our team about giving them confidence to succeed.”

He was always interacting with players and making sure they were doing well, and did his best to encourage and support the student athletes on the team,

“Coach Garnica made everybody feel like they had a chance at success.”

As a coach and community member, helping those around him was an important part of his life.

“He was somebody who was very caring and giving,” said Tia. “He was all about his community.”

He didn’t strive for money or power, Tia said, but coached “out of the kindness of his heart, and just to really give back.”

Coach Garnica’s heart was always in the right place, said Santos, and he sacrificed his time to give back to others.

“He gave to others. He loved other people unconditionally,” said Santos. “I want people to know that his lifetime was an example of giving back.”

De Anza takes tough loss after leading innings

De Anza College men’s baseball team suffered a comefrom-behind loss to Mission College on Thursday, April 18, losing 9-7.

De Anza lead 5-1 after five innings but Mission outperformed them in the last four.

De Anza took the lead right away, scoring a run in the first inning. A solo home run by

Mission in the second inning tied the score before De Anza scored four runs in the fourth inning.

After the sixth inning, Mission scored eight more runs and De Anza only scored two.

Sophomore pitcher Lane Maxwell, 20, business major, walked two batters before giving up a three-run home run that sailed over the centerfield fence.

Three more Mission players scored runs because of walks and being hit by pitches.

A two-run eighth inning by Mission tied the score before a three-run ninth inning proved too much to overcome for De Anza.

The game ended when third baseman Cameron Castaneda, 20, business major, was thrown out trying to advance to second base.

Castaneda said the late-inning collapse was familiar to the team.

“We’re just not able to close,” said Castaneda. “That’s kind of just how it’s gone the whole season.”

Shortstop Tiaga Sato, 20, mathematics major, said De Anza could improve by not allowing their opponents to capitalize on mistakes.

“Walks and hit-by-pitches definitely hurt,” said Sato. “It just mentally derails us from getting into that rhythm.”

Head coach Erick Raich said he was proud of the players for performing well after their scheduled starting pitcher could not participate due to numbness

in his face.

“That was a gutty performance from our guys,” said Raich. “We have some guys that are playing out of position, guys that are doing a little bit more than what we anticipated them to do coming into the season.”

Sato said loss and failure are built into the nature of baseball.

“Most of the time we’re bound to fail in baseball, so to say,” said Sato. “So we just flush it, keep moving on. That’s all we have.”

De Anza College baseball team turned the tide and defeated Chabot 7-5 after a massive home run on April 23.

De Anza led with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, before Chabot scored three runs in the third inning and two more at the top of the fourth.

De Anza stopped Chabot’s momentum in the fifth inning and tied the game.

Outfielder James Halpin, 20, communications major, hit a powerful home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

“The pitcher got me with the cut fastball in the previous at bat, so I was looking to take away his outside pitch,” Halpin said. “He threw me a breaking ball, so I was ready for the pitch and just hit it out.”

Coach Erick Raich said he was satisfied with the game.

“We had a lot of injuries and adversities this year,” said Raich.

Pitcher Antonio Triest-Escobar, 19, communications major, said he was happy to win his last game at De Anza.

“It was good to get the win and be the tone setter. I’m definitely happy we won today,” TriestEscobar said. “Unfortunately I’m not going to be on the team next year, so it was nice to have the win to finish my career at De Anza.”
