nventors, artists, activists, leaders. Ordinary citizens. These are the some of the types of African Americans who have inspired and empowered attendees of the Black History Month celebration held on Feb. 12 at the Media and Learning Center.

The event was not only for celebration, but for reflection and discussion on how the black community has furthered society, and how it will continue to do so.

Many talked about how historic African American figures opened doors, allowing them opportunities that were previously restricted.

De Anza athletics budget clipped

All De Anza athletics teams will experience cuts in their conference and travel expenses during the 20192020 school year, after the DASB senate voted to allocate only $55,000 for the athletic department.

The amount is about a $24,300 decrease from last year’s budget. The athletic department requested about $169,000 for the 2019-2020 year.

“The athletics staff and I are concerned,” athletic director Singh said, “Where’s the money going to come from to pay (for the teams)?”

The DASB senate revealed its plans to decrease the athletic department’s funding at the Jan 30 meeting. The reason, said chair of finance Ian Robertsson during the meeting, was to avoid being held financially responsible for the department.

“We don’t want athletics to depend on DASB alone to be able to operate on a daily basis,” said senator Angel Ryoko during the Feb. 6 meeting, where budget deliberations were further discussed, “We’re trying to give them a point. We shouldn’t be the only institution that they fall back on.”

Robertsson said that funding from the college and the ability to fundraise

from outside sources could help sustubstain the department.

“Ultimately if we take away this funding they are going to go to the college and the college is going to have to decide, do we want athletes at De Anza?” said Robertsson, “I guarantee you they will say yes and they will help take on funding that we’re taking away.”

However, Singh is wary of having to rely on other sources.

“The coaches and myself, we raise quite a bit of money,” he said, “But, how many times can we keep going to the well?”

A motion by DASB president Carolyn Nguyen to cut $5,000 more from the athletics department failed to pass during the meeting after the senate discussed the impact athletics teams will face.

“I think that $55,000 is really disproportionate to 400 students (athletes),” Nguyen said. “We can afford to cut here if we’re going to allocate other funding to other programs.The finance committee went into budget deliberations with the intent of not funding anything disproportionately.”

At the Feb 13. Meeting, a motion by Robertsson to move the $55,000 funding from the away game meals account to away games was passed. This would allow more flexibiilty for the senate to discuss the athletics budget stipulations, which will occur at the Feb. 20 meeting.

Student input needed for Guided Pathways meeting Maryam Golkar STAFF REPORTER

De Anza students are encouraged to help faculty and classified staff brainstorm a clearer course-taking pathway at a meeting Feb. 22. The event is apart of the 2019 Convocation, and will be held at the Kirsch Center from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.

“We are especially interested in hearing from and dialoguing with students who are not getting much support from campus services at the moment,” Karen Chow, Academic Senate president, said in an email to

La Voz. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops or tablets in order to participate in the activities planned.

They can expect to hear information on Guided Pathways, a new initiative which will impact on students, faculty and staff.

Guided Pathways is an educational model designed to offer California community college students a clear coursetaking patterns and support services.

De Anza began a five-year plan to create and integrate Guided Pathways spring 2018.

‘Coffee with a Cop and Chancellor’ provides opportunity for conversations FEB. 19, 2019

Students and staff gathered at De Anza College’s main dining hall to grab a cup of coffee and have a casual conversation with Foothill-De Anza Chancellor Judy Miner, Chief of Police Danny Acosta and other police officers who attended the “Coffee With A Cop and the Chancellor” event on Feb. 5.

Acosta said that the event was created to

“break the conversation barrier” between the police and the students and staff on campus. People were encouraged to voice their concerns to an officer and speak with them to emphasize the idea that police are “just like us.”

“I hope it’s a way of connecting with and humanizing the police department,” said Miner. “They are good people who care about the students here at De Anza.”

If you are planning to drop a class because of an emergency or any other circumstance, a W grade can potentially help them out.

The California Board of Governors passed the EW, or “Excused Withdrawal,” in January 2018 to help students withdraw from courses for reasons beyond their control.

“One important point about EW is that it is not assigned by faculty.” said Mary Pape, Academic Senate vice president, in an email to La Voz. Under the new policy, students can request an EW from Admissions and Records for reasons such as a job transfer to a different region, incarceration, immigration issues and factors that will be determined on individual case facts.

According to De Anza College Institutional Research, there was a 10 percent course withdrawal rate in the academic year 201718.

In a survey from De Anza College Office of Institutional Research and Planning, 16

percent of students who withdrew from courses did so because of “personal issues outside of school” in spring 2018.

The EW grade can help students and will not be counted in academic withdrawals and other factors that can affect the students’ transcripts, enrollment or financial aid.

The California Board of Governors also passed regulation changes such as updating the W grade and adding MW, or “Military Withdrawal,” and FW, or “Failed to Withdraw,” grading symbols.

MW, or “Military Withdrawal,” functions in a similar way to EW except it is used for students who are called for active duty and orders that can collide with student’s academics.

FW, or “Failed to Withdraw,” is given when students fail the course due to their prolonged absence during the end of the term.

Karen Chow, Academic Senate president, said these new grading symbols would take effect in Fall 2019 if they were approved by the Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees.

4 Elements Hip-Hop Club hosts Open Mic Kyle McDonald STAFF REPORTER

4 Elements Hip-Hop Club held an event hosted by McTate Stroman at the Euphrat Museum of Art, continuing the 10 year tradition of hosting Open Mic Night on the First Thursday of each month.

Performing artists arrived to sing, play instruments, rap over beats, freestyle, and conduct slam poetry along with stand up comedy.

All of the artists who had displayed their art at the event were looking to take their careers as far as they could go, and were helping to build a local art community center at De Anza College.

Damon Ong, 22, communications major, brought along his acoustic guitar and performed self-made ballads as well as a cover of the R&B song “Redbone” by Childish Gambino.

When asked about his inspiration to pick up the guitar, Ong said “When I was younger my dad had bought me a guitar, and I mostly grew up on rock. My favorite artists include Pink Floyd, and Kendrick Lamar.”

Jonathan Ortega, under the stage name Lil Tega, showcased his two years of experience in rapping. Ortega said that he was going to be performing repertoires in San Francisco, where companies such as Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group will send representatives.

“The hardest times in your life, are the best times to write, “ said Lil Tega.

4 Elements Hip-Hop Club hosted the event to draw attention towards their own club activities.

Their club members enjoy activities such as breakdancing, learning how to make graffiti, DJing, and emceeing for entertainment purposes.

CAMPUS BEAT “Ancestral Journeys” showcases immigration stories FEB. 19, 2019

Artists gathered for a reception for the new exhibit “Ancestral Journeys” which spotlights self-identity, family history, immigration, and diasporas at the Euphrat Museum of Art on the rainy night of February 13.

“I thought last night went really well, especially considering how the weather was,” said Diana Argabrite, the museum director.

The exhibition will be held until March 21.

Artist Trinh Mai uses “Begins with Tea” to document time because her grandmother touched and drank every single one of those tea bags from her kitchen.

“It probably has her DNA on it. Right? That’s an interesting thought,” Mai said.

“I want people to see themselves in something that’s completely illogical.

I want to make work that speaks to people in ways that they might not understand, but they can feel,” she said.

Katy Cole, 23, an art major at De Anza who helped to set up the installation said, “I actually was here when artist David Middlebrook set some of these up and they’re actually different eggs from endangered species around the world.”

loosely tell the story of artist Cheryl Derricotte’s mother’s side of the family alongside other of Dericotte’s artworks on kilnformed glass.

“Even though there’s a lot of negative history, addiction, and terrible things about tobacco,” Dericotte said, “if you looked at the plant itself, rendered in that etched glass, all you just see are these beautiful leaves.”

“With my work, I always say it’s the beauty of the glass or the sexiness of the material that will lure you in,” she said.

“But there’s a deeper narrative and dialogue that I want to have with you, once you understand the subject matter.”

Argabrite said she asks artists at different levels of fame to participate in exhibits but she might not hear back from them because they’re too busy and successful.

But sometimes she gets surprises, like Gayle Tanaka who is a New York-based artist. Not only did Tanaka respond, but she was also delighted to participate.

She wanted to help pay for the shipping.

“I hope that whatever show you’re looking at, the artworks will make you think and not be obvious,” said Argabrite.

Step back, press ‘pause’ for your health Mary Sullivan Guest Columnist

We like to think we‘re tough, strong, independent - like a superhero fighting through all the negative in life, but chronic exposure to anger, ugly talk, flaming frustration can weakened our immune system.

Our brain listens and is affected by what we see, hear, even what we think.

While it is true sticks and stones may break bones, negative words can have life changing negative impact.

Whether it is in person, by email or through social media, words can promote health.

When you or a friend feel negative emotions - press “pause” and step back before responding with mean words.

It takes strength to build mental muscles and practice healthy “pause” behavior.

When others around are angry, sad, or stressed, and ready to react, help them and yourself to a healthier place by trying these options: Breathe – science tells us anger spikes emotions in our brain and take 90 seconds before cool logic can be brought forth.

Take a “pause”, then a deep

slow breath in through your nose, allowing your chest and lower belly to expand and gently exhale the negative feelings.

Repeat gently, as you gain control.

Move – The act of getting up, getting out, moving our body reduces stress and improves perspective.

If the situation allows, take a minute to walk yourself or your friend around the block and calmly decide what you or your friend will do.

Write it down – When you or a friend are feeling overwhelmed and ready to step off into panic land, “pause” and make a list.

What task needs to be done?

Can steps be broken down into bite size pieces?

What needs to be done first?

What resources are available?

If it’s a task I dread, I often set my phone timer for 12 minutes, to see what I can accomplish.

Phone a friend – Talking to others can give perspective and lighten the burdens. It might seem easier to text or email, but talking to someone you trust, hearing the familiar voice can calm and comfort. “pause” for a quick call

to say hi, and make plans to get together later to talk through what is happening.

Check grateful – When frustration grabs you and everything looks bad.

“Pause” and find five things for which you’re grateful.

Try the nightly practice of gratitude.

You’re brain will notice more positive things in your day.

If you see someone having a hard time, or have a gut feeling that something is not right, act on it.

It doesn’t matter what you say.

You don’t have to be a word superhero, “pause” and show you care.

Your words can change someone’s entire day.

Our hearts are made stronger by how we treat others. “pause” the negative, that’s the sign of a true superhero.

“They’ve inspired me, they’ve encouraged me, they’ve created opportunity for me to even be here,” said Caroline Alexander, human sexuality guest speaker.

Attendees of all races spoke of how African American figures have impacted their lives.

“The African American community has paved ways by providing leadership for other communities of color,” said Adriana Garcia, administrative assistant.

The event highlighted the importance of a month that is often overlooked or disregarded by many. Those at the event talked of the need to acknowledge and honor the contributions of African Americans to society.

Black History Month is important for educating people about the impact of black individuals and black community, Alexander said.

“Every time Black History Month comes around the corner, I’m learning new stuff,” said Sabrina Fansey, 21, biology major.

Kassie Phillips, Umoja Program coordinator, talked about what the month meant to her.

“It means reminders, trauma, celebration. It means love, it means history, it means my heritage,” she said.

Black History Month is not only about uplifting the black community, said Nmachi

Somanya, 19, English major. It is also about “sharing the greatness that’s in my community with people that are not from my community,” she said.

While the celebration helped highlight the important contributions by African Americans to society, attendees pointed out the need to realize that black history is not separate from the rest of history, a fact they said should be remembered throughout the year.

“It’s very necessary to understand that black history is not black history,” said Thomas Asrat, 19, electrical engineering major. “It’s American history. It is world history.”

After 17 years working for the California History Center, executive director Tom Izu is retiring in June 2019.

Despite retiring, Izu will still be involved in the center’s activities.

HIs goal, Izu said, was to emphasize the idea that history has important lessons every generation needs to know.

“What I wanted while working here through the California History Center was to promote the idea that all around us goes way back to humans beings on earth,” Izu said.

He continued saying that history has important lessons and people can find stories in our events and exhibits that may inspire and help them in their lives.

One of the exhibits he organizes and that supports his goal is the Day of Remembrance to commemorate JapaneseAmericans internment during World War II happening on Feb. 19.

“Now I was asked to do Day of Remembrance programs here at De Anza because I helped organize them in San Jose’s Japanese American community” said Izu. “To not only recognize this

happened and this was wrong but to get the government to apologize and pay reparations and form of redress for the wrong doing.”

“It is not so much that this happened to Japanese Americans” said Izu. “It’s just that it’s a very clear lesson about what can happen if people are not willing to stand up for the constitution and the Bill of Rights, or any group of people in this country.”

Izu cited examples like the treatment of various immigrant groups that suffer from profiling to scapegoating.

“People need to understand their civil liberties and their constitutional rights can be taken away by the U.S. government if people are not vigilant and stand up to attempts to do so” said Izu. “The Bill of Rights and the Constitution are not self executing. They do not protect them somehow and people actually have to do something.”

In a technologically-advanced society, facial recognition use is inevitable. Like many other technologies, it is beneficial to our society and will be a part of our everyday lives, expanding and developing further into the future. The software is already being used to save people time in their fast-paced lives.

Facial recognition technology is used on social media applications. On Facebook, it suggests who we should tag in photos. On iPhones, it helps group photos of your mom in one album. The use is being expanded to adapt to people’s security needs.

The software identifies specific points of your face, carefully measuring the spots to make a pattern that is already stored in systems like Apple iOS or databases like the FBI. According to Nancy Gupton of the Franklin Institute, facial recognition has a wide array of uses, especially when it comes to business and personal safety.

The software is used not only by companies like Facebook, but also on computers and ATM machines instead of numeric passcodes, in animated movies for lifelike design and by law enforcement to scan crowds for wanted men and women.

The software can also be used fairly easily by people without much thought. Imagine never having to come up with different alpha-numeric passcodes for every account you have and then having to remember them!

It can also be integrated into security systems very easily and inexpensively It helps both individuals and organizations save time and money.

It makes databases more accessible, but also more secure.

In addition to this, our databases will be harder to access, but for those who have the means to access them, it wouldn’t take as long.

According to Hugo Martin for the Los Angeles Times, the Department of Homeland Security hopes to use facial

recognition to track an estimated one million foreign travelers who travel in and out of the country through the Los Angeles International Airport, to strengthen airport security.

The idea of facial recognition technology tends to freak people out, because there is not much oversight on what companies do with the stored facial patterns.

But companies like Microsoft are calling for more government oversight, as the software uses are unavoidable.

Introducing facial recognition technology into everyday life is great, that is, if you are a tech entrepreneur, a cybercriminal, or a despot. But for the rest of us, this software has huge potential for misuse.

I have a suggestion for all those who are eager to make use of this technology. Talk to the hundreds of thousands of Uighurs, the Muslim minorities who have been detained in western China. Ask them what they think of this software, used to track their every movement and interaction.

They may have something to say.

This is a rather extreme example of the misuse of facial recognition software.

After all, not every country is going to install toilets that require a facial scan in order to receive toilet paper, as China is doing.

It is worth noting, that liberalism across the world is on a downswing and it is not unreasonable to worry about the sinister uses of this technology by governments, including our own, in the near future.

Just last year, Amazon tried convincing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to purchase its Rekognition software, according to documents obtained by the Project on Government Oversight. In the current political climate it is not hard to imagine this technology being used to identify the immigration status of residents in communities throughout the country.

The same Amazon product displays alarming bias in its abilities, misidentifying close to 30 percent of dark-skinned women, compared to 0 percent of white men, a study by the MIT Media Lab shows.

Even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, whose company produces facial recognition software, spoke about the need to regulate the technology.

“There’s no discrimination between the right and the wrong use of facial recognition,” he said.

Proponents of the software point to enhanced security as one of its strengths. But with the increasing power of machine learning, cybersecurity writer Mark Elgan says, artificial intelligence might soon be used to defeat facial recognition programs.

Facial recognition software presents a dubious step forward on the path towards an increasingly technological society.

It may provide some convenient benefits, but these benefits are far from vital, and the current and potential misuse of this software is enormous.

YouTube is becoming safer, one flagged video at a time Maryam Golkar STAFF REPORTER

YouTube needs to continue regulating their content in a fair way because the internet is already home to enough danger.

YouTube has removed 58 million videos in just three months, according to a CNET article on. The motive behind filtering out these videos is to remove any that violates YouTube’s policies or extremist

content, which includes spam and adult content.

Despite the regulations YouTube has set for its content creators, the platform has found an overwhelming number of people uploading content that is objectionable. The desire to keep YouTube a safe place is understandable, but given that it has over a billion users makes it hard to regulate.

YouTube is a place that anyone can access and it is important to make sure it remains a safe place

where people are free to use it as a creative outlet for the right reasons.

The benefits to taking down videos deemed unethical is to lower the incentive that others will re-upload the same videos.

But there is also a political factor that supports the removal of videos. For example, some people have been known to post content onto YouTube supporting terrorism. This is never OK. People can also search for trigger words and enter into

a whole world of explicit and supremacist content.

If a video gets removed, there is a reason. If someone disagrees with that, YouTube is not the place to upload their videos.

Some argue that freedom of speech plays a role in uploading what you want on your own channel, which is understandable, but what YouTube tolerates on its platform ultimately reflects on the company’s bigger image.

Taking the steps towards creating a safe community is vital

towards YouTube’s continuing success and the safety of its users.

By eliminating videos that go against YouTube’s guidelines, people will be able to use the platform in the ways that it is meant to be used.

It will allow users to roam safely on the site without running into content that the average person would not want to see.

It also sends the message that if someone is to use their YouTube channel to promote hate or violence, it will not be tolerated.

Masculinity, as a list of stereotypes assigned to men, is limiting boys and men from exploring themselves and the world, but it is also up to the individual to change or challenge these norms.

My relatives were shocked with the way I am — quiet, simple and into my own daydreams.

My mother used to mock me saying I was like a woman and that my older sister was more like a man because she was extroverted and involved in extracurricular activities.

When I was bullied during middle school for looking like a Muslim, my masculinity and character were tested for the first time.

My parents told me to “be a man” so I could stand up for myself but they never forced me to be someone I clearly was not.

While I am not a physically strong person or outgoing today, I am confident and do what I like — not what I am supposed to do.

I enjoy baking, reading books and watching a lot of YouTube videos and movies.

I agree that during my childhood and even during adolescence, I am haunted with my masculinity as I did not fit under those norms and community’s expectations.

But I have accepted myself for who and what I am –not masculine or feminine, but rather an individual with complex traits and behaviors.

Masculinity is often associated with strength and confidence, but strength can also mean inner strength. Confidence can also be shown without asserting dominance over others.

In order for a boy to show his masculinity, he doesn’t have to get involved in what others are doing. He can follow his own way, and that itself shows confidence.

A mother’s perspective: Raising my son right Shiri Marwaha STAFF REPORTER

Raising a boy in a world filled with masculine stereotypes and forcing norms of what men should or shouldn’t do is challenging.

The past twelve years were a breeze because he was too young to notice there was a gender disparity among his relatives. But now the disparity is literally in his face, puzzling him because it adds to the challenges of adolescence.

He was raised to be a responsible individual with no gender bias, but now he sees that men can get away with not doing

certain acts or gestures.

He tries to use it to his advantage by getting away from chores, but I’m strong and equipped enough to make him realize humanity comes first and then masculinity, that true strength of a man, lies in his kindness.

It’s a daily challenge to steer my son away from the toxic masculinity in society. It appals me to see him talk about the girls in class as being weak or say that girls can’t do certain things.

I talk to him every chance I get about the strength of women and all the great women in the past and their accomplishments, the great women of today and their strength and how women can do

things just as well as men, if not better.

This makes me wonder why society throws so many obstacles and creates stereotypes to poison young males’ minds? Especially when we have come a long way in history with women advancing in every field and proving their strength many times over.

I refuse to let society define what is masculine and I will raise my son the right way.

By showing him that kindness is at the heart of masculinity and he needs to respect and treat women equally, just the way he would like them to treat his mother.

A nonbinary person’s perspective: Accepting my duality Jamie Lamping STAFF REPORTER

Seeing cisgender men and fellow gender-nonconforming folks fight against toxic masculinity by doing traditionally feminine things has helped me immensely in my own fight against toxic masculinity.

As a non-binary person assigned female at birth, I find that toxic masculinity is a tough thing to navigate.

Growing up, before knowing I was non-binary, I had a desire to be perceived more boyish. I shunned anything feminine.

People complimented me for my long hair I didn’t want, called me cute and scolded me for being “unlady-like.” All of these led to a deep disgust for myself I couldn’t place.

I didn’t want to be seen as a “girly-girl” because that was synonymous with being weak. I didn’t know this was a symptom of the toxic masculinity I was subject to on a daily basis.

In high school, when I learned more about different gender identities, I came out as nonbinary.

Then I struggled even more with toxic masculinity. I felt pressure to be even more masculine to

make up for my feminine side.

I hid any “weak” part of me; I tried to be the tough one. But I’m not as tough as I tried to make myself out to be, and pretending ended up breaking me.

The more I hid my feelings, the more anxious I became over my self-image. In turn the anxiety I felt led me to squash my own feelings more and more, causing greater emotional distress.

I eventually forced myself to be so masculine, in appearance and behavior, to compensate for my femininity that my mom thought I was going to transition to male.

When I finally learned about toxic masculinity, I was able to

put a face to the problems I was experiencing.

It’s still an ongoing process to accept myself as both a feminine and masculine being.

These days I am much better at expressing myself when something hurts me, although I still struggle. I’ve also become more comfortable with displaying my feminine side once and awhile too.

Toxic masculinity affects everyone of every gender expression, not just men. Unless you’ve lived it, it’s hard to acknowledge.

‘Resident Evil II’ perfectly reinvents a haunting classic Tyson Tsoi

The world of the “Resident Evil” franchise is a horrendous zombie experience, but “Resident Evil Two” has pushed the boundaries of experience and reinvented the true definition of horror at its finest.

“Resident Evil Two” is a zombie survival 2019 remake of the original 1998 version, where you follow the stories of police rookie Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield who were trapped in the fictional Raccoon City. A virus that was released into the city has turned its citizens into zombies.

The smallest details in this game are presented significantly in gorgeous quality.

Whether it is the amazing motion capture in movie-based cutscenes, gory heads blasting off of zombies or the variety

and designs of these multiple zombies, “Resident Evil Two” masterfully portrays realism with its haunting atmosphere.

Wearing headphones is the best way to play this classic in order to immerse yourself with its amazing sound quality.

Much like in the original Playstation classic, you play as either Leon or Claire.

Both characters deliver compelling stories based on their own personalities and takes on the dangers of Raccoon City, and the feelings of nostalgia and anxiety are well accounted for in both storylines.

As you progress, every item in the game begins to become scarce, struggling to find health when you’re low or even ammo.

Precautions are needed on whether or not to pick up certain survival items due to the lack of inventory space, or else you either waste countless ammunition or be forced to stow away important items.

Pressure buildup in this universe will ultimately create this eerie feeling of

tenseness as the character struggles to figure out the numerous unique and well thought-out puzzles. Each puzzle, when completed, will grant a great feeling of accomplishment.

The most difficult part of a zombie’s characteristics is to tell whether or not they are actually alive or dead, which adds to that tension as you navigate the world with multiple corpses at your feet.

These zombies will lurk around in every corner, and it is never really easy to tell whether or not you are safe in the end.

All of these factors present a true horror experience that makes “Resident Evil Two” one of 2019’s greatest horror titles.

Whether or not you are a newcomer to the series, this is an absolute must-buy for horror fans.

‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ most immersive war film ever Julia Kolman STAFF REPORTER

World War I comes to life through the lens of the frightened boys and proud men of the Great War, telling their stories void of narration in the documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old.” Directed by Peter Jackson, “They Shall Not Grow Old” is a story of men and boys and their experiences detailed through their own voices and historical footage.

Jackson utilizes high quality technology to capture, colorize and incorporate sound effects into World War I footage from

the Imperial War Museum archives with excellent cinematography.

The documentary flows well without narration, subtitles, locations, dates or identification. Personal interviews with older British soldiers added to that effect of detail in their dramatic and traumatic experiences.

These stories share common feelings about the war and its harsh conditions, such as lying about one’s age to enlist.

When the young men are marching through the war zone with their faces almost as clear as in modern films the audience experience the war as it was in color and with sound, not through the

‘DNA’ presents a welcome evolution for Backstreet Boys Mehek Kapur STAFF REPORTER

The Backstreet Boys released their hyped new album, DNA. It is their 10th studio album and their first full-length album since 2013. The album is smooth, modern and a perfect testament to how the group has evolved over time with throwbacks to their roots.

The comeback itself has been massive for the Backstreet Boys who are currently on a world tour and received a Grammy nomination for “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” the first title on the album, and arguably one of the strongest.

The song creates a strong harmony and yet has a digital EDM sound that distances them from the group they were 20 years ago.

One of the strongest tracks, “Breathe,” is an acapella melody showing the group not needing to rely on production to create tracks that resonate with modern listeners.

The tune is smoothly sultry, and though simple, the lyrics are catchy and beautiful , by telling the story of a broken heart after a relationship. “Sand keeps slipping right through my hands/days all feel the same, still numb from you” is an example of these lyrics.

Another high note is “No Place,” which is a different type of song from the rest of

the album, by brings in country acoustics in a way that makes it sound uniquely outstanding.

The Backstreet Boys had an interview with NPR and said “[‘No Place’] is our favorite track on DNA. “[‘No Place’] just shows that we’re not trying to be anything we’re not, we’re comfortable in our own skin, and we’re happy to be doing what we’re doing still, so many years later.” group member Brian Littrell said.

The only song that really did not flow particularly well was “New Love,” a forgettable song with lyrics that were downright tacky and felt untrue to the group’s overall sound.

It begins with the lyric “Who are you, the sex police? My sex ain’t got no rules,” which are considered tasteless by some in light of the rape allegations last year against band member Nick Carter.

Overall though, the Backstreet Boys are back, and it is better than all right.

From start to finish, DNA is a medley of perfect harmonies, memorable lyrics and is absolutely worth listening to.

FINAL RATING: 4.5/5

The images of deadly bloodshot wounds and lifeless bodies paint the scene as an alarming experience, one that 120 men witnessed and narrated.

The film follows the perceived glory of war as the men are introduced marching through British towns, impressing ladies and proudly volunteering to fight before the legal age.

But it also, as it should, portrays death

and mutilation. Some scenes are disturbing and some stories are told unbelievably well.

Jackson superbly restores and displays the footage in an engaging manner. “They Shall Not Grow Old” perfectly captures the faces, the voices and the lives behind history’s silent war. It is a glimpse into into the past that allows the viewer to experience World War I at its clearest stages.

Track and Field gunning for top spot With the season starting, team’s confidence is rife to go one better on last season’s second place

The De Anza Track and Field team hopes that an increase in roster numbers will boost their chances this season.

After finishing second in both the men’s and women’s conference championships last year, head coach Nick Mattis made it clear that his goal is to get both teams back on top.

“Our goals are pretty much

the same standards I hold every year,” Mattis said. “We want to win conference, men and women.

We want trophies at NorCal, top three, and we want to be top ten at state.”

Mattis is hopeful that the increase in participation this season will help the team achieve some of those goals.

With 31 out of the 41 strong men’s team and 15 out of the 19 women competing for the Dons this season being fresh faces, Mattis is confident that the

incoming talent will be more than enough to make up for the athletes the teams lost in the offseason.

“We didn’t have a big team last year and so we have a large freshman class that’s boosting our numbers. The increase in roster size will also help the team with depth across various events,” said Mattis.

“We got people in every event with experience and talent, so that’s part of our strength as being a whole team instead of just individualizing in a couple of

spots.”

The athletes, on their part, have been focusing on improving their personal results by spending the offseason practicing and preparing for competition.

“A lot of people have been training since the summer,” said captain Emilio Zertuche, 18, film and television production major.

“They’ve really been working hard in cross country and during the summers as well.”

After months of offseason practice, athletes hope their

efforts will show up in the results throughout the season.

“As long as you come every day, it goes well,” said Melissa Favorite, 19, political science major. “The worst thing in track is if you stagnate. So as long as I keep going up, I’ll be OK.” De Anza will be hosting five meets this season, including the Coast Conference Trials and Finals on April 24 and 27.
