COLLEGE PROPOSAL: GOOGLE E-MAIL FOR ALL STUDENTS Robert Balicki LA VOZ

A proposal to automatically create Google Gmail electronic mail accounts for all students sparked heated debate that led to postponement in the De Anza Associated Student Body Senate Wednesday. The proposal would route all De Anza College e-mail communication, including “Pay to Stay” reminders, enrollment confirmations and important dates, to a new set of accounts provided by Google after a one-year transitional period, according to Bradley Creamer, De Anza’s webmaster. Some senators were concerned that students who do not use the Internet would be forced to use the system. “Maybe they just don’t want one,” said senator Zahra Noor. “I don’t see how Google will help them.” Executive Vice President Bernardo de Seabra said he shared Noor’s concerns. De Anza will be able to say it’s the student’s fault if the student does not use the assigned e-mail account, said de Seabra. “With the school mandating, this brings a serious problem.” Creamer said students could use the accounts to forward emails to another account to consolidate e-mails, and that it could

I know, I know. Nobody wants to read about hemorrhoids. But considering how common they are. Nearly 90 percent of people develop them at some time in their lives. I am figuring that somebody wants to know about this very irritating problem.

More students using math and science center Robert Balicki LA VOZ

Math and science tutoring has moved to a new, quieter location: S-43. The new center, which opened on Jan. 20, offers help in all math and science classes — anything from Elementary Statistics to Advanced Physics. The old location was “crowded and dense” and “right next to a bathroom with a freon machine,” which would randomly go off, said Evan Sarina, a math tutor. The program is currently serving 450 students, up 40 percent from last quarter, he said. “We don’t have enough tutors, so we can’t meet demand,” said Sarina. The challenge is attracting tutors, he said. Many well-qualified students are taking internships or working elsewhere. The center offers individual, group, and online tutoring. Drop-in tutors are usually also available. Tutors volunteer for one quarter, then get paid. Individual tutors are paid $8 per hour, and group tutors are paid $10. Tutoring program coordina-

What are they? The hemorrhoidal veins are a cluster of blood vessels located just inside the opening of the anus. A hemorrhoid occurs when one or more of these veins gets swollen and pops out of place and can hurt, itch or bleed. Who can get them? Anyone can get hemorrhoids, but some people are more likely to get them than others are. Anything that puts excessive pressure on the anal muscles will increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Chronic constipation, straining during a bowel movement, and sitting on the toilet for a long period of time all can lead to hemorrhoids. Pregnant women often get hemorrhoids during the last 3 or 4 months of pregnancy because the fetus places great pressure on the rectal muscles. What can you do to avoid them? Basically, what goes in your mouth will eventually come out the other end, so making changes to both your eating and bowel

tor Diana Alves de Lima called it a fun, educational place to work which “looks great on transfer applications.” The center also has had no stable source of funding in recent years because of the recent budget cuts, according to de Lima. The De Anza Student Senate,

which approved $7,428 in new funding on Wednesday, “has been incredibly supportive and has allowed us to keep our door open,” she said. However, the Student Senate approves funding on a yearly basis, and can’t be counted on for long-term support.
