July-Jan 2015-16 Rajoda,Ahmedabad Yogesh Gandevikar & Rajiv Darji

From the statistic data and case study above it was found that , children with special-different ability require special care and attention for their education and training. Also it was observed that they require equivalent amount of area for their outdoor activity. These out door activities must be under safe and secure environment. Therefore hierarchy of courtyard could be the best solution for designing this project. “Hierarchy of courtyard for safe and secure out door activity It is important to provide courtyard for composite climate of the site . Form of building for special people should be simple in geometry. Depending upon the space requirement, building could be maximum ground +two storey. Due to locally available materials brick walls and exposed concrete structure is provided. Where ever required brick jali is proposed for visual connectivity and safety. Non slippery flooring is provided for special children. As per requirement large, small and louver openings are provided.

INTRODUCTION

SITE

According to the research done by the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank, about 785 million people among the 15% of world population are suffering with significant physical or mental disability, which includes 5% of children population. In India 1.67% of the total population are disable, amongst them 35.29% are children. Rehabilitation means “process of helping someone and providing them a healthy and a disease free life.” Rehabilitation centres for disabled children are commonly seen in the Western Countries with various specialties. However, in India such facilities and infrastructure are lacking. After viewing the statistics and the rate of which awareness for this issue is being spread, it has become a necessity to have facilities like this in India. There are few centres in India but the building is not equipped to deal with different range of disabilities. It is a real challenge to set up a rehab center in India, as most of the people have superstitious belief. Ignorance towards mentally challenged is observed due to superstitious belief and fears. A challenged baby is considered as a curse of the God/Goddess, many parents want to disown their own challenged child and thus they do not disclose the very existence of challenged child in their family. Lack of education and social awareness has made acceptance of such kids socially difficult. Lack of social awareness affects each and every aspects of a child’s life. Teachers are not trained and schools don't have the infrastructure to deal with children with disabilities. Neither are paediatric wards of hospitals equipped to deal with them. There is not enough data on the number of children living with disabilities to allow the government to provide the necessary services.

PROGRAM

OBJECTIVE • The main objective of the rehabilitation is to develop confidence in kids mind and to motivate them to face the daily activities without others help. • The mindset of the people would be the biggest challenge as their acceptance is the first steps which will help them grow. Once there is acceptance the next step is to provide them best diagnosis assessment and medical care. • Children with disabilities have the right to get the best education and care possible, to become fully prepared to step into society and become active members of the IndianCommunity so that they can contribute to the development. • To surround them in the comfortable environment that would nourish and provide them with tools necessary to cope up with the society independently. Revitalizing Public Realm: Manekchowk Precinct, Ahmedabad Year Location Faculty

02

May - 2015 Manekchowk,Ahmedabad Jaydeep Bhagat & Meghna sutar

Manekchowk, Ahmedabad was the area selected to study the urban context. Three major monuments of the city are in Manekchowk – Jama Masjid, King’s Tomb and Queen’s Tomb. It has residences, commercial and market places. It is an example of how multiple activities function together. It indicates that Indian culture (depicted in its streets) is not about rigidity. Its about flexibility. Indian streets are organic and flexible in nature and so is our culture. Manek chowk has flexibility and just needs little organization of spaces to function smoothly. The intention was to understand the situation and rejuvenate its condition without disturbing the nature of the streets and its activities.

November - 2013 Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad Vibha Gujjar & Sangramsinh

The proposal of Ahmedabad Art Center was made to show a unique path to allow a soft transition of values from urban to nature and from modernity to local culture. Hybridizing the urban space with landscape and ecology, their design introduces and enhances new ways of urban, cultural and natural dialogue. The design also focuses on the enhancement of the pedestrian interface between public corridors and the Riverfront. The City museum proposal is a design opportunity to address environmental issues in institutional architecture participating in the construction of the Ahmedabad urbanity. This project will play an active role in the culture of Ahmedabad with a vision to nurture and share knowledge. These smaller volumes are linked in a physical and symbolical way by the same roof structure. The concave roof shape unifies the whole building performing a bioclimatic function where the shape allows for rainwater harvesting, shadow in summer and protection from lashing monsoon rain and wind.

Primary Health Center l Himatnagar 07 Year Location

OCT-DEC - 2012 Himatnagar, Sabarkantha

Faculty

Shouvik Chakraborty & Vimal Patel

In this semester project was mainly based on the climate and material studio. We were given a site near by Himatnagar and we had to design a primary health centre for the near by village. This building includes doctor's cabin, minor O.T, major O.T, nursing room , male and female wards, reception pharmacy, waiting area, utility, etc. The planning was based on centralized courtyard. In planning for the most sustainable building solution with least ecological impact, the main construction of the center is compressed earth bricks and expose concrete . Their high thermal mass capacity allows them to absorb the cool night air and release it during the day, helping keep the interior spaces cool. The clinic also features galvanized large overlapping roofs that protect the walls from rain and shade the interiors and surrounding spaces from the hot daytime sun. A ramp and staircase has been provided for the movement of stretcher and wheelchair, all the rooms are accessible through big corridor.
