Heather Karns, Assistant Dean for Law Career Services and Alumni Affairs By Teresa Cajot The Office of Professional Development at The University of Toledo College of Law in Ohio provides students and alumni alike with a range of career-related services and resources. The primary person behind these opportunities is the Assistant Dean for Law Career Services and Alumni Affairs, Heather S. Karns.
Karns joined the staff of The University of Toledo College of Law in 2003, where she now oversees Career Services and Alumni Affairs within the Office of Professional Development. Prior to joining the College of Law, Karns worked with the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, providing mental health and job retention counseling. She also spent four years at Clemson University’s Michelin Career Center, where she initially served as an education career services supervisor before being promoted to assistant director of recruitment. Karns also has experience running a private practice. At the present time, she is active within the Toledo Bar Association Diversity Committee and on the Board of the Federal Bar Association Northern District of Ohio. Karns,

who is also a member of the National Association of Legal Professionals (NALP), has provided articles for the association’s bulletin, presented at its annual conferences, and served on its committees. As a member of the NALP Annual Conference Education Planning Committee, she was heavily involved in organizing the upcoming 2012 Annual Education Conference- NALP in Austin: No Limits! The conference lineup will include workshops, networking activities, peer communication, wellness activities, two plenary sessions, the yearly diversity and inclusion reception, and more. Karns earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Toledo in 1994 and her M Ed in Counseling and Guidance Services from Clemson University in 1996. She is also a Licensed Professional Counselor.
