John Kroger, Oregon Attorney General By Teresa Cajot John Kroger made headlines earlier this month when he announced that he will be seeking a second term as Oregon’s top lawyer and prosecutor. He was first elected as the state’s Attorney General in 2008 with the nominations of both the Republican and Democratic parties. In this role, Kroger oversees Oregon’s Department of Justice and its 12,000 attorneys, investigators, and staff members.

As the current Attorney General and a former federal prosecutor and law professor, Kroger brings ample legal experience with him into the next campaign. During his first term as Attorney General, he was responsible for establishing the first Environmental Crimes Enforcement Unit in Oregon, as well as forming the Department of Justice’s Mortgage Fraud Task Force and the Rural Drug Crimes Task Force. From 2002 until 2008, Kroger served as an associate professor at Lewis and Clark Law School in Oregon. During this time, he was honored with the Levenson Award for Teaching Excellence three times. As a federal prosecutor, Kroger was involved in a number of high profile cases, in which he won convictions against corrupt government officials, major drug traffickers, and mafia captains. Kroger was a trial attorney on the Enron Task Force and was subsequently involved in the investigation and prosecution of Enron executives. In 2008, Kroger published the book, Convictions: A Prosecutor’s Battles Against Mafia Killers, Drug Kingpins, and Enron Thieves.

Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Kroger served as a member of the emergency response team, assisting FBI Agents in the process of delving into leads. While serving as an Assistant US Attorney, Kroger was presented with the Director’s Award for Outstanding Performance as an Assistant US Attorney. The honor was given in response to his work in obtaining a conviction for two mafia captains who were involved in a number of murders. Kroger served as a Judicial Clerk for the Honorable Judge Anthony Scirica of the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1996. In 1993 he worked as a senior policy analyst for the US Department of Treasury and served in the US Marine Corps from 1983 until 1986. Kroger earned his law degree with honors from Harvard Law School in 1996. During his time at Harvard, he was a Kaufman Public Interest Law Fellow and a Mark DeWolfe Howe Fellow in Anglo-American Legal History. He also attended Yale University, where he earned BA and MA degrees.
