Law Professor Named to Advisory Committee By Teresa Cajot Ingrid BrunkWuerth, a Vanderbiltprofessor of law and director of the International Legal Studies Program, has recently been appointed to the State Department Advisory Committee on International Law. The committee includes international law experts such as professors, practitioners, and policy makers, who possess the skills and knowledge to advise Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Legal Advisor, Harold HongjuKoh.
Wuerth officially accepted the appointment in November, thus adding another accomplishment to an already impressive resume. Her areas of expertise include international law, foreign relations law, international litigation, civil procedure, and the German Constitution. She joined Vanderbilt University’s law faculty in 2007 and has served as the director of International Legal Studies Program at the Nashville, Tennessee law school since 2009. At Vanderbilt, she teaches International Law, Foreign Relations Law, Civil Procedure, and Comparative Constitutional Law. At the present time, she serves as the co-chair of the American Society of Law’s Interest Group on International Law in the Domestic Courts. Additionally, she worked with the program committee for the 2011 annual American Society of International Law meeting. Immediately prior to becoming a faculty member, Wuerth was a law professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law. She has also served in a number of leading roles within the American Society of International Law and has written extensively on international law in domestic courts and US foreign relations law. Her work has been published in the Chicago, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Harvard Journals of International Law.

Through the German Academic Exchange Commission, Wuerth spent the majority of 2011 in Berlin at the Humboldt University Law School. As a former Fulbright Senior Scholar, she also had the opportunity to serve as a research fellow in Berlin in 2007 and also in 1997 after being named a Chancellor’s Scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt Association. Wuerth completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before moving on to the University of Chicago Law School where she served on the law review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Following her graduation, she clerked for Judge Jan E. Dubois of the US Eastern District of Pennsylvania and also for Judge Jane R. Roth on the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She then joined Dechert Price & Roads in Philadelphia as a practicing attorney. “I am very excited and honored to have the opportunity to serve the Secretary and the Legal Advisor as they make decisions about international law,” Wuerth said in reference to her latest appointment.
