The firm’s origins can be traced to a legal firm founded by Samuel Weiss in 1875. Weiss died in 1910 and his son William joined with Charles B. Cole and two others to continue the practice under the name of Goldsmith, Cohen, Cole & Weiss. The firm underwent several name changes before 1950 when it took on its current name, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, & Garrison. In more recent years, the firm has served a number of notable clients including Spiro Agnew, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Bruce Bromley. It also serves as counsel to many high profile corporations and financial institutions such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Time Warner, the Carlyle Group, and General Atlantic Partners. Today Paul, Weiss boasts more than 700 lawyers throughout its offices in New York; Beijing; Hong Kong; London; Tokyo; Toronto; Washington, DC; and Wilmington. The New York office, located in midtown Manhattan, is divided into the following eight departments: Corporate, Litigation, Bankruptcy, Entertainment, Environmental, Personal Representation, Real Estate and Taxation.

The Washington practice offers a variety of legal services pertaining to issues involving the executive branch and independent regulatory agencies, the federal courts, and Congress. This office specializes in the areas of telecommunications, administrative law, antitrust, legislation and corporate governance. The firm’s London office is primarily involved in capital markets transactions as they pertain to the European marketplace, private equity/private M&A transactions in Europe, and cross-border M&A transactions. The Hong Kong and Beijing offices are heavily involved in advising US, international, and Chinese companies on direct investment options, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, project finance, and technology. Within Japan, the firm serves a number of leading trading companies and financial institutions, as well as telecommunications, computer, and industrial companies.
