Sari Zimmerman, Assistant Dean of Career & Professional Development By Teresa Cajot Under the guidance of Sari Zimmerman, the Office of Career & Professional Development at UC Hastings College of Law in San Francisco provides a range of key services to students, alumni, and legal employers. The primary functions of the office are to serve the career development needs of both students and alumni, partially through outreach work with legal employers. Services offered include counseling, panel offerings, mock interviews, workshops, career fairs, on-campus recruiting programs, and other professional development resources. The office works with students pursuing work in all areas of law and even with those looking into careers outside of the legal arena.

Sari Zimmerman, the Assistant Dean for the Office of Career & Professional Development, is responsible for the delivery of these and other services that benefit past and present students at UC Hastings College of Law. She oversees a career and professional development staff of seven in the creation and application of training and recruitment programs, and also handles the department’s budget and works directly with students. Zimmerman joined the law school in 1996 to launch the Alumni Mentor Program, which arranges an estimated 400 mentor/mentee relationships each year. In 1998, she moved into the position of associate director for career development and in 2010 was appointed to the position of Assistant Dean for the Office of Career & Professional Development. Since taking on her latest position, the office has placed an increased focus on instilling professionalism and practical training into the general law school program.

Immediately prior to joining Hastings, she served as a telecommunications associate at the Washington, DC firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand, which is now known as DLA Piper. She remained with the firm for two years, during which time she served a number of high profile clients including Motorola and the Association of American Railroads. Additionally, she frequently speaks at National Association of Legal Professionals conferences and has been quoted by the media on a variety of professional development matters. She also possesses teaching and counseling experience from the Georgetown University Law Center. Zimmerman holds a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center and a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
