Schiff Hardin LLP By Teresa Cajot Schiff Hardin LLP is a general practice law firm with offices in the cities of Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Lake Forest, New York, San Francisco, and Washington. The firm, which represents clients throughout the nation and around the globe, has memberships in the following referral networks: The Network of Trial Law Firms, The United States Law Firm Group, and TerraLex.

The firm’s origins date back to the 1864 founding of the firm Hitchcock & Dupree. Many of the firm’s current banking and industrial clients have relied on the firm’s sound advice since the 1870s and 1880s. However, the firm’s current name was not taken on until 2004. Today the firm’s largest practice area is litigation with a concentration on complex toxic tort, insurance class actions, and reinsurance disputes. Schiff Hardin’s 400 attorneys also serve clients in a range of other practice areas including antitrust and trade regulation; construction and corporate securities; employee benefits and executive compensation; energy and public utilities; environmental; finance; financial institutions; intellectual property; international; labor and employment; private clients, trusts, and estates; private companies; private equity and venue capital; product liability; public companies; public finance; real estate; restructuring; bankruptcy and creditors’ rights; securities and futures regulation; sustainable energy and climate change; tax; telecommunications; and white collar crime and corporate compliance.

In addition to its primary practice areas, Schiff Hardin is also committed to pro bono work from an array of legal services organizations and civic groups, state and municipal agencies, and litigants themselves. The firm’s major areas of pro bono interest include civil rights, political asylum, death penalty litigation, landlord-tenant disputes, public benefits, divorce, child custody, disability law, consumer contracts, homeless rights, low-income housing, community development, simple will and estate matters, as well as other issues of concern to the indigent. Schiff Hardin is also devoted to promoting women in the legal field. In 1998, the firm established the Schiff Hardin Women’s Networking Group (WNG), which offers a number of networking events and opportunities professional advancement opportunities for women attorneys. The group consists of female attorneys from the law firm as well as female clients and other friends of the firm.
