The University of Toledo College of Law By Teresa Cajot The University of Toledo College of Law in Ohio is proud to be a small, close knit law school within a large university. There are an estimated 520 students enrolled in the College of Law, with a typical incoming class size of 170. The law school strives to maintain small classes and an open door policy to encourage student engagement.
The College of Law, which was founded in 1906, offers fulland part-time JD programs and four joint degree programs. Additionally, students can earn a certificate of concentration in criminal law, environmental law, international law, intellectual property, or labor and employment law. The University of Toledo College of Law was named the Best Value Law School within Michigan and Ohio by National Jurist Magazine for three consecutive years. Furthermore, the College of Law offers one of the most extensive scholarship programs in the US. Close to one-third of its incoming first year law students and upper level students are granted either full or partial scholarships. The school has a bar passage rate of 90 percent. The law school’s academic program aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of fundamental legal concepts, knowledge of specialized areas within the legal field, and the necessary research, writing, and legal practice skills. The College of Law Clinical Program for upper level students is designed to train students to work directly with clients while also mastering courtroom presentation and advocacy skills. Additional clinical offerings allow students to work for change while readying themselves life after law school. These additional clinical offerings include the Civil Practice Clinic, the Criminal Law Practice Program, the Dispute Resolution Clinic, the Domestic Violence and Juvenile Law Clinic, and the Public Service Externship Clinic.

The law school publishes the student-run University of Toledo Law Review on a quarterly basis. First year members are encouraged to write articles for possible publication while also to involving themselves in the technical editing process. Second-year editors take on a range of responsibilities, including final product review. Students and alumni have access to the Office of Professional Development, which promotes career success through a number of offerings such as workshops, individual career counseling, and outside skill development opportunities. Students are also invited to participate in the school’s twentyplus student groups and organizations including the Student Bar Association, the Moot Court Association, the Federalist Society, Asian Pacific Law Students, Black Law Students, the Criminal Justice Society, and Sports Law. The University of Toledo College of Law operates under Dean Daniel J. Steinbock, who has been a faculty member since 1985. As a law professor, Steinbock has taught Criminal Procedure, Administrative Law, Immigration Law, and Trial Practice. He holds both his undergraduate and law degree from Yale University.
