Veronica Morelli, Sturm College of Law By Teresa Cajot Many students are drawn to the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law for its extensive Environment and Natural Resources Law Program. With a variety of international course offerings and a focus on both theoretical and experiential knowledge, it should come as little surprise that the program attracts students from around the globe. Veronica Morelli, of Lima, Peru, is one of those students.

Prior to entering the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program Morelli was an in-house lawyer at PERU

US and Europe but ultimately chose Denver for a number of reasons. The school’s highly regarded program was a major

LNG S.R.L, where she provided support to both social and environmental teams. PERU LNG, the founder and operator of South America’s first LNG (liquefied natural gas) business, was established through a complex approval process. The company had to gain the approval of a number of Social Environmental Impact Assessments for the use of natural resources. Involved land use planning and negotiations were also involved.

In order to secure a loan of $800 million from the International Development Bank, PERU LNG had to conform to various international environmental and specific social guidelines. As a part of an ongoing process, lenders and Peruvian regulatory groups monitor the company to ensure that it is in compliance with all regulations. For Morelli, Denver Law was a natural choice because unlike a general LLM program, Denver Law presented the opportunity to further her knowledge in energy, environmental, and natural resources. Morelli researched LLM programs within the

The study of environment and natural resources law is important to Morelli for several reasons. ‘’Nowadays, it’s inconceivable to think about the use of natural resources without having as a principal matter consideration of the environmental aspects involved in the execution of said activity,’’ said Morelli in an interview. Prior to joining PERU LNG, Morelli studied law at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences (UPC) in Lima. She is on track to graduate from Denver Law in 2012 and intends to return to her hometown, where she will continue working at PERU LNG.
