The firm had its start in the 1930s when Mark Wilmer joined Frank L. Snell, Riney Salmon, and Charles Strouss in practice. Following World War II, Joseph T. Melczer and James Walsh became members of the firm and the name was changed to reflect these additions. When Edwin Beauchamp joined the firm, the name was changed to Snell, Wilmer, Walsh, Melczer, and Beauchamp but quickly shortened to Snell & Wilmer. Throughout the 1960s, Snell & Wilmer experienced significant growth as new practice areas emerged. New attorneys were consistently brought on board to meet the growing demand for services in the areas of complex business transactions, securities, and utility regulation. In 1989, the firm combined with Bilby & Shoenhair, Tucson’s oldest and largest law firm. Today, as one of the largest law firms in the western US, Snell & Wilmer is capable of handling thousands of diverse clients both within the US and overseas.
