Winston & Strawn, LLP By Teresa Cajot Winston & Strawn LLP is an international law firm with offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Geneva, London, Moscow, Paris, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. With about 1,000 attorneys, the firm is capable of serving businesses of all sizes in a range of areas from business financing, taxation, and antitrust matters to mergers, acquisitions, and litigation.

The firm was established by Frederick H. Winston in Chicago in 1853. Nearly 41 years late, Silas H. Strawn, the firm’s other name partner, joined the firm. Over the years, Winston & Strawn has been associated with a number of major cases including the 1894 organization of the Union Stockyard and Transit Company and the 1994 challenge of the War Powers Act set forth by Montgomery Ward department store. A number of high profile clients turn to Winston & Strawn for legal advice and representation, including the Microsoft Corporation, State Farm, Verizon, the McDonald’s Corporation, Dell Inc., Fortune Brands Inc., the Lowe’s Corporation; American Airlines, Bank of America, and many others. In an effort to provide clients with the best possible service, the firm practices cross-office and cross-practice collaboration. Technology is also central to the firm’s operations. Winston & Strawn further prides itself on its history of pro bono work. In 1991, the firm became one of the first major US law firms to take on a written pro bono policy and was along among the first to sign onto the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge and to employ a full-time director of public interest law. The firm also sponsors The Winston & Strawn Foundation, which was established about 20 years to provide financial assistance to civic and charitable organizations working in the areas of health and social welfare, community arts and culture, education, and legal advocacy. In an effort to shape future lawyers, the firm also offers summer programs that provide practical training in areas such as drafting a legal research memorandum, drafting an IPO document, taking a deposition, and much more. Each office is responsible for organizing its own summer associate program but each office promises to expose participants to several practice areas.
