Are Green Jobs An Answer To The Staggering Unemployment Rate? By Todd Schultz Green jobs might be of use to the economic recovery. A Pew Charitable Trust study claims that clean energy is practically a recession proof job creator, losing only 6.6% of its jobs since 2009, one of the worst economic periods in the last century.

Last week, benefits for the unemployed rose to its highest level in six months. There were 484,000 first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week. The numbers indicate that the economic recession is not headed for immediate recovery. With U.S. stocks trending downward, companies are not hiring as much. Faith is low in the economic recovery. Cisco CEO John Chambers spoke to analysts on Wednesday. ‘’We are seeing a large number of mixed signals in both the market and from our customers’ expectations.’’ Chambers said. ‘’We think the words ‘unusual uncertainty’ are an accurate description of what is occurring.’’ The Fed came out on Tuesday to state what has been obvious to employers. They said that economic recovery was going to be slower than the one projected. They vowed to maintain support for the economy as employers held their breath. John F. Wasik, author of The Audacity of Help: Obama’s Economic Plan and the Remaking of America, suggests that

turning attention towards the creation of clean energy may help America through the depression. He called for the energy industry to ‘’creative incentives’’ for purchasing clean power and ‘’increase and extend loan guarantees and tax breaks for all clean-tech companies over decades, not year to year.’’ Obama himself stated that the renewable energy industry would create ‘’The jobs of the future, jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced.’’ However, one green company has proven the latter claim to not be completely true. Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., announced that it would move the final assembly of existing solar cell products from its Michigan plant to Tijuana, Mexico. That move puts 140 American workers out of work. ECD did say that they would create 600 new jobs in Michigan with the help of the $13 million stimulus tax credit. However, with the moving of the plant, those 600 jobs may be pushed back longer than expected.
