Securing Attorney Lawyer Jobs If you are currently studying law or have recently graduated from law school and are preparing to begin a career the thing that is likely to be foremost on your mind is just how you are going to find a job. You have devoted a lot of time and resources towards joining the legal profession-four years for a Bachelors Degree, sitting the LSAT, then three more years in law school. To make it all count, you need to know how to get your foot in the door and land one of the available attorney lawyer jobs.

There are several options for you to consider with the good news being that the need for lawyers by the society in general will always be there-whether it is buying property, battling through divorce or requesting compensation for libel. The bad news when it comes to lawyer jobs is that the competition for jobs is fiercer than ever and you have to work hard to get noticed. One of the most important keys to getting attorney lawyer jobs is networking. This process can start the day you graduate from law school. Make sure you maintain contact with your law professors in the areas that were most interesting to you. Your professors have all practiced law in some capacity and most likely still have friends and colleagues in the job market that can prove to be useful contacts in the search for attorney lawyer jobs. If you keep in constant touch with your law professors, they are more likely to remember you; but more than that they will see that you are focused and committed to law and will not hesitate to recommend you to someone else. Keeping in touch can be as simple as calling or visiting them every couple of months. But your professors are just the beginning of your networking plan for lawyer jobs. Many law firms, corporations, nonprofit organizations and lawyer societies frequently organize events that can be a powerful way to network. Some of these events are attended not just by lawyers but by professionals across several disciplines. Many of these people could be key decision

makers in the organizations they work for and you should try and establish contact as much as you can. When you attend such networking events, make sure that you do your research on whatever theme the event will be based on. That way you can participate in the event with confidence since you will not have difficulty maintaining a conversation that is relevant to participants. Use this to break the ice and get in touch with as many participants as possible. Do not just focus on the high profile participants since demand for their attention is usually intense and you could lose out on other contacts as you wait your turn. In any case, a high profile person who probably meets tens or hundreds of new people at such an event will struggle to remember all. Do not have too high expectations as a rookie in the lawyer jobs market. Your first attorney lawyer jobs may not be high profile and well compensated. You might even have to start off by volunteering at a non-profit firm or taking on cases pro bono. Of course these options may not be glamorous but they do help you build not only your resume but that all important contact list. During this time of low income work, some newly qualified lawyers choose to tutor students for the LSATS. Not only is this a great way to earn some extra funds, it is yet another way to build contacts. Some of your students may probably come from a family that runs its own legal firm and could help link you with the partners in their firm. Do not shy away from doing seemingly mundane tasks when you are first employed before you are entrusted with
