Delhi, the capital of india, is an amalgam of the old and the new. The ancient and the modern times are in juxtaposition here, not only in the remains of a succession of empires, but equally in present social structure and lifestyles. The name delhi, dehali, or dilli is derived from Dhillika, the name of the first medieval township of delhi, located on the southwestern border of the present delhi, in mehrauli.

This was the first in the series of seven medieval cities. It is also known as yoginipura, that is, the fortress of the yoginis (female divinities). 71

Jantar mantar There was, however, an ancient urban settlement in delhi known as indraprastha on the banks of the yamuna which is traditionally believed to have been founded by the pandava brothers, the mythical heroes of mahabharata, the national epic of india. Excavations at the site of the township inside purana kila or the old fort show that the date of the oldest habitation in delhi is around the 3rd or 4th century b.c. Delhi is divided into two parts. The old delhi or delhi was one of the capitals of muslim india between the 12th and 19th centuries. Old forts, mosques and monuments related to india's muslim history are located here. New delhi is the imperial city which was created as the capital by the british. It is spread over a wide area and is lined with imposing boulevards. Delhi is a major travel gateway into india. It is one of india's busiest entry points for overseas airlines and is on the overland route access across asia.

Mumbai (bombay)

mumbai, the capital of maharashtra, is the fastest moving, most affluent and industrialised city in india. Mumbai is part of india's beautiful west coast that runs down from gujarat, through mumbai to goa, karnataka and kerala. The city has a natural harbour, which was developed by the british. It is one of the busiest ports of india, handling approximately 40 percent of india's maritime trade. Mumbai (till recently known as 'bombay'), derives its name from the local deity mumba devi, whose temple is still there. The portuguese predecessors of the british preferred to think of the name as bom baim, the good bay. Mumbai is a group of seven islands which are today known as colaba, mahim, mazgaon, parel, worli, girgaun and dongri. Large expanses of open sea have been filled in, and tidal swamps have been reclaimed for furthering the land area. These reclaimed areas include 75

What to see gateway of india, the principal landmark of mumbai, was the principal port when the visitors came to india by ship. The gateway was conceived, following the visit of king george v to india in 1911, and was officially opened in 1924. Its architecture is akin to the conventional arch of triumph, with elements derived from muslim styles of 16th century gujarat. Near the gateway is the colaba causeway, which extends to the end of colaba promontory, the southern end of mumbai island. Sassoon dock is always interesting to visit at dawn, when the fishing boats come in and unload their catch. 76

The first train to steam out of mumbai was from here to thane in 1853. Taraporewala aquarium is also on marine drive, and has both fresh water and saltwater fishes. On top of the malabar hills are the hanging gardens and kamala nehru park, which offer superb views over mumbai. The taj mahal, a resplendent mughal mausoleum, is probably the most extravagant monument ever built for love and is without doubt india's most popular tourist attraction. It was constructed by emperor shah jahan in memory of his second wife, mumtaz mahal, whose death during childbirth in 1631 reportedly left the emperor so heartbroken that his hair turned white overnight. Built entirely of white marble, the monument sits on a raised marble platform, at the end of the famous waterways, and has four decorative minarets at each corner. Perfectly symmetrical the mausoleum is a stunning sight from any distance, but viewed close up, the carvings and inlays on the marble are astounding. Tickets to enter the taj are pricey for tourists but it is a sight not to be missed, and if you prefer entrance is free on fridays but it tends to be impossibly crowded because of this. Agra fort is the only other place worth a visit in agra, dating from 1565, the massive red sandstone fortress is located on the bank of the yamuna river. Rajasthan offers a wealth of interesting attractions to visitors and really requires a few weeks to be explored in full. But for the short break tourist, a trip to jaipur, the vibrant capital of the region gives an insight into some of the treasures rajasthan has to offer. Just hours from delhi by train, car or bus, the famous pink city (so-called because of its pink colored buildings in the old city) is a feast for the eyes and gives a glimpse of the color and vibrancy of rajasthan. Founded in 1727, the city did not go pink until over a century later, when in 1876 the maharaja ram singh had the entire old city painted pink (a color traditionally associated with hospitality) to welcome the british prince of wales on his first visit.

More than any other spot in the country, kuala lumpur, or "kl" as it is commonly known, is the focal 89

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

point of new malaysia. While the city's past is still present in the evocative british colonial buildings of the dataran merdeka and the midnight lamps of the petaling street night market, that past is everywhere met with insistent reminders of kl's present and future. The city's bustling streets, its shining, modern office towers, and its cosmopolitan air project an unbounded spirit of progress and symbolize malaysia's unhesitating leap into the future. To some, this spirit seems to have been gained at the loss of ancient cultural traditions, but in many ways kl marks the continuation rather than the loss of malaysia's rich past. Like malacca five hundred years before, kl's commercial centre is a grand meeting place for merchants and travelers from all over the world

with a height of 1,453 feet, the world's tallest buildings now rise above the skyline of kuala lumpur. They are called the petronas towers, and, inevitably, they have become the symbols for the astounding growth that has taken place in malaysia over the last two decades. As fate would have it, however, their supreme status will probably be shortlived: by the year 2001, shanghai's world financial center is expected to top off at record-breaking 1,508 feet.

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

It would be difficult to overstate the attraction of malaysia for anyone who appreciates the natural world. Its primal forests, ranging from shoreline mangrove to mountaintop oak, are of the sort that most of the world now knows only in myth. Although malaysia's size is similar to that of norway, natural trees and forests cover almost three quarters of the land, an area equivalent to almost the entire united kingdom. One can walk for hundreds of miles in malaysia under a continuous canopy of green, marveling at an abundance of plant and animal species equaled by no other location in the entire world. A single halfkilometer plot of land in borneo's lowland dipterocarp forest, for example, may well contain more than eight hundred different species of trees alone, a stunning degree of variety that pales, however, in comparison to the profusion and diversity of flowers, birds, ferns, and insects.

Compared to the rest of the world's rain forests, malaysia's is a grandmother. During the ice ages, much of the earth was covered by immense glaciers that kept the global climate cool. Consequently, many of the planet's tropical rain forests had to wait until the glaciers receded before they could evolve. Malaysia's forest, however, was blessed with a location far enough away from 91

the ice that it developed 130 million years ago - far earlier than those of africa and latin america

Iit sounds like hopeless social experiment: take every home in a village and lump them all under the same roof. While you are at it, eliminate the concept of individual possessions and divide the goods equally, down to the last cigarette. Finally, throw in the condition that, under that one long roof, each family must live, sleep, and eat together in a single room about the size of a minibus. To most, such an experiment sounds even worse than hopeless. It sounds like a recipe for outright social collapse.

Islam and the golden age of malacca 1400 ad - 1511 ad until the 15th century, the hindu kingdoms of peninsular malaysia were largely overshadowed by neighboring kingdoms in cambodia and indonesia. The strongest of these kingdoms was called srivijaya, and the records of chinese, indian, and arab traders laud it as the best trading port in the region. It was the first great maritime kingdom in the malay archipelago, and other ports quickly emulated its success. At some time around the 13th century, as other entrepots

Emerged, srivijaya's influence declined. The lack of a strong central power, coupled with the ever-present nuisance of pirates, amplified the need for secure, well-equipped port in the region. Fate would make this port the city of malacca.

Just visiting malaysia - seeing a few sights, meeting its people, and eating good food - is more than enough to make for an unforgettable trip. Your best memory might be a quiet day you spend wandering the colonial streets of malacca, or breathing in the earthy air of a kampung. Usually, it will be the malaysians themselves you remember most, their smiles and generosity. That said, malaysia also offers some very special activities, and if you make room for one or two of them, they will enhance your trip immeasurably. Here are some suggestions:

Diving: the tropical waters off both peninsular malaysia and borneo offer some of the world's best scuba diving. This is a place endowed with some of the sport's best possibilities: you can dive with whale sharks, hover around immense coral gardens and walls, or dive on ominous and hulking wwii shipwrecks. In many places, you can get 100 + feet of visibility. Also, the country has become increasingly aware of the biological and economic importance of its marine 94

heritage, and each year brings better access to and protection for the unique marine life. Because of the hundreds of islands, there are many dive options. Visit the dive pages to learn more about malaysia's diving options.

Shopping: Next to activities like spelunking and jungle trekking, "shopping" may sound a bit tame, but make no mistake: exploring malaysia's outdoor markets is pure adventure (and of course you can take home whatever you hunt - or bargain down). The variety of bargain items you can find in the major markets is endless, ranging from quality electronics to blowguns to traditional arts and crafts. Currently, the dollar goes a long way in malaysia, so if you're serious about shopping you might consider bringing an extra bag along.

perhaps the best known malaysian theater event is the wayang kulit. Before the encroachment of television,

the

wayang kulit, or shadow puppet play, was the favorite after-dark entertainment. The enang, as the puppeteer

called, directed the puppets' intricate movements while singing dozens of parts in a performance which often lasted several hours. The wayang kulit draws its 95

inspiration from the ramayana, the hindi epic comprised of a potpourri of immortal tales. The wayang kulit throws in a handful of javanese and malay characters for good measure and then pits good against evil in a classic plot. Warrior animals, giants, ghouls, princes, and priests battle it out to the finish in this rousing epic.

bangladesh is endowed with great tourism potentiality with it natural beauty, tribal culture, special events, religious rituals, historical places, forests and wildlife, sea beaches etc. But unfortunately having all these facilities we are not able to attract more foreign & local tourist because of the following problemsî ş

Now a days many of these spots loose attraction for improper management and preservation. • Disturbance from the local public: some tourists mainly foreigners are harassed by the local public of terrorists in different tourist spots of bangladesh.

one of the major problems for attracting foreign tourists is the negative attitude among the foreigners about bangladesh because of our law & order situation and other problems. ď ś The participation between the govt. & private sector is the key factor in the success of sustainable development in tourism.

nature and wildlife oriented travel represents a major trend in tourism today. What was once best described as a safari now carries labels such as "adventure travel" and "eco-tour", but the basic concept is the same-a journey to an exotic spot where modern human society has not displaced the indigenous wildlife.

when the disastrous greenhouse effect on the earth and its environment was noticed, a group of conscious people started a movement to save the earth 101

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

and the environment. Gradually that movement highlighted that mass tourism cause’s serious threat to the ecological balance of the earth. Since then, ecotourism emerged as a new concept to develop tourism without disturbing ecological balance. Development of tourism can no longer be at the cost of degrading and rapid loss of natural resources.

What is eco-tourism? ties (the international ecotourism society) define ecotourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the wellbeing of local people. ecotourism is intended to be sustainable, focused on the natural world, and beneficial to local communities. The world conservation union defines it as environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural Areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socioeconomic involvement of local populations. 102

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

Practically speaking, ecotourism includes activities in which visitors enjoy hands-on experiences, such as bird-watching in the brazilian rainforest, hiking in the mountains of nepal, participating in a traditional village celebration, or taking a canoe trip down a river. Local guides usually accompany small groups of tourists on expeditions, teaching them about the local flora, fauna, and culture of the region. Ecotourism is characterized by small-scale outfits in remote locations where commercialization and mass-tourism outfits have not yet penetrated. Tourists typically stay with local families, or at small, environmentally-friendly hotels called ecolodges. These opportunities for personal contact with members of the host community facilitate cross-cultural exchange and add greatly to the value of ecotourism experiences for some people. Ecotourism is rooted in a conservation Ethic and has a mission to support the biological and cultural resources of the community. Revenues from safari expeditions, for instance, may go to protecting the animals from poaching, while the entry fees from visiting a village may go to supporting education and health care for the local children. Prime locations where ecotourism has become popular include latin america, southeast asia, and australia. Those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following principles:

environmental

and

cultural

awareness and respect. •

Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.

The united nations has already declared the year-2002 as the international year of eco-tourism.

The objective of observing international year of tourism is 

(1) to generate greater awareness among public authorities and the private sector regarding eco-tourism's capacity to contribute to the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage in natural and rural areas, and the improvement of standard of living in 104

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

those areas. (2) disseminate methods and techniques for the planning, management, regulation and monitoring of eco-tourism to guarantee its long-term sustainability. (3) promote exchanges of successful experiences in the field of eco-tourism. And (4) increase opportunities for the efficient marketing and promotion of eco-tourism destinations and products on international markets.

Bangladesh has a fairly large number of virgin eco-tourism spots to offer. Some of these are: 105

benefits of ecotourism: Ecotourism has been describe as ‘one of the most potent tools in the arsenal of the contemporary conservationists. It presents an environmentally friendlier and potentially more sustainable alternative to extractive activities, such as farming, logging, mining, or harvesting of wildlife. It offers local people the chance to escape a cycle of poverty and, by sharing their knowledge of the local terrain and ecology with visitors, to develop a stronger sense of community pride and a broader, more global perspective that recognizes the value of biodiversity to all people.

106

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

Ecotourism encourages the development of markets in native handicrafts and artwork for souvenirs, and thus contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage.

for environmentalists, ecotourism provides an opportunity for long-term protection of the land and its resources. This is particularly valuable considering that the hot spots of biological diversity are generally the poorest regions of the world, where economic necessity is most likely to drive people to pursue environmentally damaging options. Ecotourism is an opportunity to preserve ecosystem and biological diversity that would otherwise be lost. It is also a chance to generate revenue to support research efforts. Entry fees for an ecotourism attraction can be channeled into programs that further scientific knowledge about the area’s ecology; that support captive breeding, rehabilitation, or reforestation; or that monitor human impact to ensure that visitation does not degrade the resource. The kakum canopy walkway in kakum national park, ghana, for example, is a rainforest walkway designed and built by conservation international. The walkway is used both by tourist and scientists and is a source of revenue for conservation efforts in the park. It was credited with boosting visitation levels from 2,000 in 1992 to 70,000 in 1999. The concepts of ecotourism are same throughout the world. As a tourist attraction bangladesh also not beyond of this concept keeping the view in

107

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

mind bangladesh also should formulate the guideline as other countries like u.s.a, japan are following in the ecotourism view.

though bangladesh is an ideal land for the tourists but much is yet to be done to develop tourism in bangladesh. From tourism, bangladesh earns a negligible amount not worthy of being mentioned. But this sector can turn into one of the major revenue and foreign exchange earning source in our economy. But for that the development of tourism industry its infrastructure facilities must be ensured. New sights and tourist spots should be created, as well as existing sites should maintain with effectiveness. Because of ineffective maintenance facilities tourists do not want to visit in bangladesh.

Cox’s bazar, sundarbans and kuakata are the world famous natural tourist spots but fail to attract a lot of tourist due to poor tourism facilities like accommodation facilities, insufficient fund, law and order situation, 108

TOURISM MARKETING IN BANGLADESH - - - -

disturbance from the local public etc. Besides this there are some archaeological spots are in the country. These spots should be brought under proper management and guidance. Steps should be taken to make these spots attractive.

in such a situation, the old fashioned life style in rural bangladesh, the rivers, the forested hills, the largest mangrove forest and pollution free sea beaches are a waiting to be converted into highly attractive tourism products.

There are great scope to combine all aspects of tourism- beach, cultural, village and eco-tourism to make tourism products of bangladesh attractive. The urgent need now is to expand the country’s tourism sector under an integrated development plan.

In conclusion, bangladesh does not have many world class tour operations to compete world tourism market. But as tourism is most dynamic and the people like to visit new places. The government should develop the infra-structural facilities first and then suitable promotion should be launched to build up the new image of the country abroad.
