Lawrence Academy Annual Report
A Legacy of Giving Arhant Ghanta ’21 and Emma Anane ’21, the 2019-2020 recipients of the omas B. Warner ’75 Memorial Prize (see description of prize inside front cover)
2019–2020 R ECOGNITION A WARDS Each year, Lawrence Academy recognizes outstanding students, alumni, faculty, and staff for their contributions to the school, the local community, and the global community. This year, these awards were proudly presented to the following recipients: Founders’ Day Award For extraordinary service to Lawrence Academy, given at Founders’ Day.
THE THOMAS B. WARNER ’75 MEMORIAL PRIZE Established in September 1979 by the Warner family and friends in memory of Thomas B. Warner, Lawrence Academy alumnus, Class of 1975. To be awarded annually to two incoming seniors who have demonstrated a remarkable determination to achieve to their fullest potential in the classroom, on the field, and in the extracurricular activities of the school. Pictured above: Tom Warner ’75 and Dave Oakes ’74 take the lead in LA cross country meet circa 1973.
About the Recipients Arhant Ghanta ’21 — A relentless, genuine, and kind student, Arhant maintains high marks in an all-honors schedule, seeking extra help from teachers and helping his peers. He values learning for the sake of learning. Passionate about languages, Arhant has taught himself Sanskrit, Hindi, and Arabic, and is doing a RAIL in linguistics. Arhant’s passion for learning is apparent outside the classroom, where his conversations range from Taoism to the Bhagavad Gita. Last year, he established a STEM/Robotics Club and the Debate Club. He is also a dedicated runner and squash participant who loves dance.
Emma Anane ’21 — From being a part of Elm Tree Society to her involvement on student government, all while juggling a rigorous academic load, Emma demonstrates the qualities that fit the description of this award. She is a friend to all and is usually the one that provides sound advice to her classmates. She is often bringing younger students to adults for the purpose of problem solving or receiving assistance. She has challenged herself academically, taking four honors courses, and has worked hard to overcome some setbacks. Ultimately persevering and landing on her feet, she has elected to challenge herself in the last two terms with a RAIL study in psychology. Emma is a varsity volleyball and JV lacrosse player, and manages the boys’ varsity basketball team.
The Dunn Family: Ray & Kelly, Jay ’83, Marty ’85, Peter ’86, and Margaret ’90 Greater Good Award For service to humanity, given at Founders’ Day to a student. At the Founders’ Day ceremony, Roisin Casey ’20 and Kayli Grise ’20 were recognized for their outstanding leadership of Rise Against Hunger. Kathy Peabody Book Award For service to Lawrence Academy students, given at Founders’ Day. Carine Aurelio Department Chair for Excellence in Teaching This teaching award recognizes innovation in teaching methods, the ability to inspire creativity and independent thought, evidence of staying current in one’s field, intellectual energy, and commitment to teaching and to the intellectual development of students. It is given at the end-of-year all-school assembly. Tony Hawgood Robert W. Darling Faculty Chair Awarded every five years for excellence in teaching, appointed by the head of school. 2016-2021: Joel Sugerman
From the Head of School This Annual Report draws particular attention to two things that are so important right now. First, the qualities of our educational program and community experience are timeless and indispensable. Second, support for LA runs strong and deep. In the more than 225 years of Lawrence Academy’s existence, the school has seen and weathered crisis before. Through it all, the school has lived up to being a light that shines for all. If our students are the light of generations past, present, and future, then philanthropic support is the fuel that feeds the fire. We have needed that generous energy more than ever this year. Whether it was the alumni body stepping up in commitment, increasing their giving by 23%; the Day of Giving rallying the community at the end of the year; or the parent community — particularly the parents of the Class of 2020 — doing everything possible to support students and school equally, it was an heroic effort. More than any year, the school has dedicated its resources to provide whatever has been necessary in the moment to meet a drastically changed educational environment and remain as highly
operational as possible. Our accomplishments could never have occurred without a strong legacy of past support and a ready reserve of present support. The articulation of our endowment funds, described in detail in this Annual Report, are an example of the strengths and contributions of the past. The Senior Parent Gift is a great example of the strength and ambition of the present. To the degree that we have the core institutional strength to remain a thriving environment to recognize, inspire, support, and empower our students, we have our donors to thank — from those giving at leadership levels to those giving just to participate in something they believe in…and from those who gave decades and even centuries before to those who gave for the first time in this extraordinary year. We are humbled and motivated to be stewards of your generosity and vision. With your help, we will continue to carry Lawrence Academy into the future as the beacon of possibility and humanity it has always been. With greatest thanks,
Dan Scheibe P’23, P’24

Individualized Teaching and Learning Student-centered learning is essential to Lawrence Academy’s academic program. Our faculty teach students how to think, not what to think. roughout the year, the faculty assess each student’s interests and needs and adapt their teaching approach accordingly. Between daily office hours during the school day, after-hours help sessions offered by our largely on-campus faculty, and the availability of full-time learning coaches for students who need extra assistance, we pride ourselves on our ability to truly “recognize each student for who they are” and “inspire them to take responsibility for who they want to become.”

Exceptional Student and Faculty Connections e advisory system is at the heart of the Lawrence Academy experience. Our advisory groups consist of 4-8 students of varying grade levels and backgrounds who are assigned to a faculty advisor for the entire school year. e faculty advisor sees each student every day for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Advisors monitor each student’s welfare and academic progress, are responsible for writing their twice-monthly progress reports, and are the main point of contact at the school for each advisee’s family.

Why We Give
Honoring Their Teachers DONALD AND PATRICIA ARMSTRONG ENDOWMENT FUND FOR THE FACULTY
Armstrong brothers Donald ’87, Timothy ’89, and John ’93 all walked away from their time at Lawrence Academy with fond memories of the relationships they formed with their teachers. Later in life, as they saw family friends starting funds to support the LA community and Tim found himself in a position to do the same, the Armstrongs established the Donald and Patricia Armstrong Endowment Fund for the Faculty, to support those who made a difference in their lives. The brothers put the fund, which they established in 2005, in their parents’ names to honor the sacrifices they made to send their three sons to Lawrence. As students at Lawrence Academy, Don, Tim, and John found that they often mentioned their teachers during
conversations at the family’s dinner table in Littleton, Mass., regularly sharing stories of their time in the classroom. They carried those relationships into their adult lives, too: Don remains connected with Rob Moore, and John speaks highly of Charlie Corey. Tim, meanwhile, is quick to say that Doc Richardson’s influence was life-changing: He remembers vividly his time spent in Doc’s class and still recalls lines from “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas. Because of the faculty members who guided them on their individual journeys, the Armstrongs are pleased to support the teachers who continue to gift LA students with advice and lifelong memories. #whywegivetoLA

Why We Give
An Educator’s Bequest, in Loving Memory GORDON ’67 AND ELIzABETH ALLING SEWALL FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID served in all these positions, and, later on, as a trustee and the secretary of the Academy’s board of trustees, he has a unique and layered perspective on LA’s recent history. Gordon and his wife Elizabeth met at Lawrence, a blessing that would be touched by sadness when Elizabeth died from metastatic breast cancer in 2012. To honor her life and legacy, Gordon and his two sons, Scott and Duncan, chose to establish the Elizabeth Alling Sewall Fund for Financial Aid at LA. “I spent my life in education, so, in many ways, this gift was a stretch for me. Nobody ever feels that they have enough money, and we’re all being asked for so much,” Gordon says, “but there are simple ways for people with average incomes to make a large impact. I’m happy that my years in development led me to realize it was possible to do this for LA in memory of Elizabeth.”
Gordon and Elizabeth Sewall
For Gordon Sewall ’67, many roads converge at Lawrence Academy: first as a student, following in the footsteps of his father, Edgar Jr. ’35, and his brother, Edgar III ’64, and then, after completing his degree at Bowdoin, as a rookie history teacher and football coach. Over the next few years, Gordon would also become director of both admissions and development. Having
16 Lawrence Academy Annual Report 2019–2020
And, given the multitude of ways Lawrence Academy has influenced his life and career, Gordon wanted to see the positive effects of his gift here and now. “I initially thought I would just establish a bequest, but I wanted the fun of seeing it established in my lifetime,” he explains. On a deeply personal level, Gordon’s generosity to Lawrence Academy commemorates the school’s undeniable influence on both his and his family’s lives. “The innovative things that we’re doing at Lawrence Academy have been part of our mission for decades,” he says. “LA is a special place with a great future, a source of great pride for all of us.”
Leadership Giving Leadership Giving represents those donors who have contributed $1,000 or more to the school in the 2019-2020 fiscal year. This includes all gifts to the LA Fund, as well as gifts to endowment, capital (including the gifts designated to capital from the Senior Parent Gift) and any other restricted giving. These gifts serve as the core foundation of the financial support that advances the educational mission and programs of the school. We greatly appreciate the remarkable generosity and support that each and every one of our leadership donors provides.

Why I Give
Paige Beede ’16
“My four years at Lawrence Academy were filled with so much faculty support, classroom engagement, academic inspiration, true friendship, and personal growth. Being a part of that community will always be something I reflect on and am grateful for as I become a part of new communities in different stages of my life. I have continued to support LA as a young alumna because I feel strongly that it is important to contribute to the preservation and progression of that strong community that had such a lasting effect on me. I believe that I can contribute to the school’s positive growth in ways that are beneficial to the current and future students there, and I think that through continued support from young alumni we can play a part in creating more access to opportunities for the students, the faculty, and the school as an institution.” #whywegivetoLA

Why We Give
A Legacy of Inspiration and Friendship THOMAS B. WARNER ’75 SCHOLARSHIP FUND three years at Lawrence, where he was “the glue that connected” the cross country and hockey friends who continue to share lifelong bonds. His brother Patrick ’80 describes Tom as “an unpretentious, eager, curious, upbeat, gregarious, approachable guy;” to his close friend Rich Johnson ’74, “Tom was LA” and represented everything that the school community values by being “a friend with everybody, tremendous athlete, great student, and kind.”
Tom Fahey ’74, Rich Johnson ’74, and Tom Warner ’75
Tom Warner ’75’s legacy at Lawrence Academy is honored by the Thomas B. Warner ’75 Scholarship Fund, established by his family and friends in September 1979. Originally, the award went annually to “a deserving senior who has demonstrated a remarkable determination to achieve his or her fullest potential in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the extracurricular activities of the school” — someone reminiscent of Tom himself — to help with general school expenses. However, close family and friends continue to grow the fund, allowing it to now also be used to defray the cost of Winterim for a student who would not otherwise have the chance to travel during those two weeks. Tom came from a working-class family in Fort Devens, Mass. The son of a retired military father, Tom spent
Tom possessed many talents — he was a superstar runner, passionate hockey player, and co-valedictorian of his class — but most importantly, he had a humility that others respected greatly. Tom Fahey ’74 will always remember him “as an innately talented teenager who attracted a diverse and disparate group of friends through his warm and open spirit.” Tom died on Sept. 25, 1979, after a valiant battle with a non-cancerous brain stem tumor. To continue to honor Tom’s life, Tom Fahey planted a tree in his memory on campus at his 25th reunion; nine years later, Rich Johnson started an annual 5K that helps grow the Memorial Fund. June 2020 would have been the run’s 12th year, and Rich looks forward to when runners will once again pass Grant Rink and the apple orchard, where Tom was at his happiest. Four years ago, while representing his brother at a reunion at Amherst College, Patrick was approached by a current student who had been a recipient of the Thomas B. Warner Memorial Fund at Lawrence Academy, an encounter that Rich says is “an example of the ripple effect of what we do.” Indeed, it is powerful to see how the fund brings people together, just as Tom did so effortlessly. #whywegivetoLA
Annual Report 2019–2020 Lawrence Academy 23
Alumni Giving By Class Lawrence Academy relies on its alumni for philanthropic support to advance the mission of the school and provide LA’s current and future students with the resources to experience the best education possible. Alumni serve and help promote the school in many ways — as trustees, Alumni Council members, class agents, ambassadors, reunion chairs, Reunion Weekend alumni panelists, and regional event hosts. We are truly grateful for all that our alumni do in support of the school.

Why I Give “I give to LA because LA gave me more than I can ever repay financially. LA gave me relationships, taught me how to learn, held me to high standards, taught me accountability, and delivered tough lessons. Even after all that, LA gave me encouragement and continued to push me to be the best version of myself. What LA gave me has made a huge difference in my personal and professional life trajectories. I feel fortunate to have been a student at LA, and LA gave me so much, I try to express my gratitude through giving back.”

LA gave me so much more than I could ever repay, so whatever I’m able to give back, I believe it can help the next generation of kids just like it helped me.” #whywegivetoLA

Why We Give
Tribute to a Teacher’s Magic THE BRIAN FEIGENBAUM ENDOWED FUND
A recent graduate, who wishes to remain anonymous, has established a fund to honor longtime dance teacher Brian Feigenbaum. She writes: “I had a lot to say — artistically and otherwise — but at 16 years old, I didn’t yet have the tools to process and respond to my world in a way that felt constructive. Enter: Brian Feigenbaum. “It was easy to see that the way he worked was magical. His approach to the work has always been interdisciplinary, and he cultivated dancers (who arrived with varying degrees of technical training) who made bold, but sensitive, physical choices. Brian encouraged rigor, discipline, thoughtful editing — habits which transcended the dance studio.”
30 Lawrence Academy Annual Report 2019–2020
“It was later, in college and graduate school, where I really was struck by how sophisticated his teaching was. We had kids 14 to 18 years old who were creating work using processes that most people don’t get exposed to until they are pursuing their MFA!” “I started the Brian Feigenbaum Endowed Fund to honor Brian, and also hopefully make it possible for his most daring and motivated students (regardless of their ability to pay) to be able to travel with him to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. That opportunity, for me, was a powerful synthesis of all I learned at LA.”

The Beloffs “Lawrence Academy has become an integral part of our family’s life since our son Nick (Class of 2021) began as a freshman. Since then, our daughter Caroline (Class of 2023) has joined Nick at LA. We have often been asked how our children have embraced LA, and our response is, instead, we are more amazed by how LA has embraced our children. Nick and Caroline have matured and grown in the classroom and the hallways. LA is guiding Nick and Caroline on a journey that tests their potential, challenging them to discover who they are academically, athletically, and personally. The Lawrence experience is priceless to us as a family, and it is the reason why we give.” #whywegivetoLA

Senior Parent Gift
Liam ’18, Lori, Eric, and Olivia ’20 Healy
The Healy Family “Eric and I were honored to be asked to co-chair the 2020 Senior Parent Gift campaign with Susanna and Richard Gallant. While already active within the LA community, we were willing to assume new responsibilities and do so timed with the graduation of our second child from the school. Fueled by a desire to leave a lasting legacy, we kicked off the fundraising effort in November 2019 — not knowing of the unprecedented challenges soon facing LA and the world at large. Given these extraordinary circumstances, we were pleased with both the level of class participation and donor support when the campaign drew to close this past June. For Liam ’18 and Olivia ’20, there was never any question that LA offered the right fit, despite each child having different interests and learning styles. LA recognized our children as unique individuals as they embraced a challenging academic curriculum and immersive extracurricular
experiences that transcended playing fields and cultures. Perhaps most importantly, our love of LA was anchored by the amazing faculty and staff that championed, advocated, motivated, inspire,d and engaged our children during not only their time at LA but post-graduation. We supported the Class of 2020 SPG campaign because we were excited to be able to give back to the community that nurtured our children’s success. We wanted to help to ensure that the great work that LA does for its students is sustained and are grateful to have played a small part in contributing to the construction of the Center for Applied Science and Technology. We care about the future of LA and are proud of all the parents of the Class of 2020 who participated and donated during an especially tumultuous time.”

Senior Parent Gift
Trustee Susanna, Rachel ’20, and Richard Gallant
The Gallant Family “When we were asked to co-chair the 2020 Senior Parent Gift campaign, it was impossible to say no. The LA community embraces the “the light shines for all” motto — and we have seen our daughter thrive because of it. Teachers, coaches, and administrators truly work to help each student work to their potential. The school environment encourages exploration across the academic, social, artistic, and sports worlds. It is a model that encourages a lifetime of interests and learning. We are so grateful for all that LA has done for our family; co-chairing the Senior Parent Gift Campaign is one way that we could show our appreciation. We have been so pleased to have had so many parents join us in this venture — despite the uncertainties that COVID has brought to our world. We believe that Dan Scheibe and his leadership team will ensure that future generations of LA students will have the opportunity to thrive in an ever-changing world.”

Current and Former Faculty/Staff The talented faculty and staff of Lawrence Academy provide the backbone for the high-quality education and strong sense of community that benefits LA students. In their daily approach of “recognizing students for who they are and inspiring them to take responsibility for who they want to become,” LA’s faculty and staff routinely put in the extra time and effort with our students. Understanding the role the LA Fund has in supporting the school’s operating budget, the following faculty and staff — both current and former — supported this year’s fundraising efforts. Annual Report 2019–2020 Lawrence Academy 41
Endowment Funds The Lawrence Academy Endowment helps to secure the long-term financial sustainability of the school and provided 6% of the school’s annual operating budget this year. In contrast to the LA Fund, endowment funds are permanently established, and their annual growth provides revenue to LA in perpetuity. Each year, the Lawrence Academy Board of Trustees approve a 4% withdrawal against the value of the endowment and direct that money to the school’s operating budget. With some funds established more than a century ago, we wish to gratefully acknowledge alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends who have created, and continue to support, a lasting legacy honoring their relationship with Lawrence Academy and their deep connections forged here, today and throughout the decades. The market values of Lawrence Academy’s endowment funds reflected below are as of June 30, 2020. Each of these funds offer ongoing endowment gift opportunities to support Lawrence Academy with a vision to secure its future.
