From the Head of School
In 1792, forty or so visionaries from the local area — inn and store keepers, doctors, lawyers, and a lot of farmers — committed between 5 and 15 British Sterling Pounds to support the “humble petition” they were putting forward to the state legislature, which began, “The happiness of community requires the dissemination of knowledge and learning among all the classes of citizens.” The principal raised by the “subscribers” towards that principle was close to 300 pounds. That’s valued at approximately $75,000 today.
The origin story of Lawrence Academy raises the point that the educational enterprise requires both firm ideals and material support. It also pretty graciously and literally makes the point that “it takes a village” (in this case, 1792 Groton, Massachusetts).
In thinking of the day-to-day operations of Lawrence Academy, the “it” supports the collection of humanity (on what was once known as “Academy Hill”) putting in the passionate work of teaching, learning, care-taking, and campus-keeping.
–
Dan Scheibe –
In terms of the resources behind it all, the “it” is the ongoing support of the Academy “subscribers”: people like you who give to the school because they believe — like the school’s founders — in the power and purpose of education in the lives of young people and in the world.
The LA Fund supports our operations, enlivening every moment of learning and living on campus. The endowment supports enduring programs: Financial Aid, Winterim, Faculty & Staff Professional Development and Support. Support for capital projects enables us to continue to imagine and build the future vision for Lawrence Academy.
The fundraising around the Community Commons Project deserves highlight. Grounded in the principle of building “The Happiness of Community,” we are proud to say that we have raised over $16 Million towards this project, a project that will not only transform the landscape and lived experience at Lawrence Academy, but also set in motion broader future aspirations.
Last year will be marked as one of the most impactful years of fundraising in the history of Lawrence Academy — including that auspicious year of 1792. Institutional strength and pride are critical, AND I believe that our success lies in the fact that we have never been clearer on our mission. We recognize. We inspire. We support. We empower. Thank you for making our mission live through your support.
“I believe that our success lies in the fact that we have never been clearer on our mission”
Lawrence Academy RECOGNIZES you for who you are, INSPIRES you to take responsibility for who you want to become, SUPPORTS you as you learn, and EMPOWERS you to take action for the greater good.

The 1793 Leadership Society
Leadership Giving represents those donors who have contributed $1,000 or more to the school in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. This includes all gifts to the LA Fund, as well as gifts to endowment, capital (including the gifts designated to capital from the Senior Parent Gift), and any other restricted giving. These gifts serve as the core foundation of the financial support that advances the educational mission and programs of the school. We greatly appreciate the remarkable generosity and support that each and every one of our leadership donors provides.

12 Lawrence Academy Annual Report 2022–2023
Alumni Giving by Class
Lawrence Academy relies on its alumni for philanthropic support to advance the mission of the school and provide LA’s current and future students with the resources to experience the best education possible. Alumni serve and help promote the school in many ways – as trustees, Alumni Council members, class agents, ambassadors, Reunion social and giving chairs, Reunion Weekend alumni panelists, and regional event hosts. We are truly grateful for all that our alumni do in support of the school.

Why I Give
I continue to support Lawrence Academy out of respect for all of the memories I hold in high regard that were the result of contributions from other alumni. I’m not only referring to memories from my time at LA, but those experiences I have today that were forged from friendships and ideas discovered at LA. While college was beneficial, LA provided me with many of the tools I find most integral to my professional and personal success. I support LA with the hope that others have the opportunity to explore educational tools that embolden their lifelong learning while molding cherishable moments and friendships to keep them company throughout their lives.

Why I Give
Supporting Lawrence Academy and making the school a bigger part of my giving has become really important to me. Life after LA has reminded me on multiple occasions of the incredible impact that the community and its opportunities have had in my life. Unique experiences I had through Winterim, athletic teams I was a part of, and various leadership groups have actually led me to many passions that I continue to pursue today. These outlets that LA provides pushed me outside of my comfort zone while I received necessary support from the faculty and my peers, ultimately giving me the skills to pursue challenges in my post-LA education and in my career. Maintaining the school’s ability to develop young lives is critical both for current students as well as alumni who benefit from LA’s reputation, and those of us in the cohort of young alumni are now vital to that mission.

Why I Give
Why do I give to LA? The answer is simple. Lawrence Academy shaped me into the person I am today. Some of my life’s best memories were made on the quad, in the classrooms, during the NGP, at the Holiday Dinner dances, on the tennis courts and all other areas of that elm tree shaded hillside. My teachers at LA inspired me to become an English teacher, and I have spent the last 16 years in a classroom hoping to give young people the same type of educational foundation they all gifted me. If my donation to LA can in any way help contribute to its future successes, I will continue to do so for as long as I am able.

Why I Give
After returning from my time overseas, I embarked on a personal mission to give back to LA, recognizing the invaluable role it played in shaping my education and preparing me for my career and personal aspirations. I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of LA in cultivating a tight-knit community that nurtures meaningful connections and fosters a profound sense of belonging among its students. Moreover, I hold deep admiration for the school’s unwavering dedication to creating a secure and inclusive environment, where students can fully harness the numerous avenues for personal growth. It is these fundamental principles that instill in me and my family a profound sense of trust and drive our commitment to give back to LA.

Senior Parent Gift
At Lawrence Academy, senior parents uphold the tradition of creating their own legacy through the Senior Parent Gift, a transformative gift to the school that supports the annual fund and a capital project that makes a lasting, positive impact on the school.
This year’s gift was allocated to the LA Fund and an investment in the new Community Commons project, the Community Commons Terrace, an addition off the existing MacNeil Lounge.

Parents of Alumni Giving
The philanthropic support Lawrence Academy receives from parents of alumni confirms the value of the educational experience their children benefitted from as they continue on through higher education and their careers. We are truly grateful for the continued, loyal generosity the school receives from these individuals.

2022-2023 Faculty and Staff
The talented faculty and staff of Lawrence Academy provide the backbone for the high-quality education and strong sense of community from which LA students benefit. In their daily approach of “recognizing students for who they are and inspiring them to take responsibility for who they want to become,” LA’s faculty and staff routinely put in the extra time and effort with our students.
Understanding the role the LA Fund has in supporting the school’s operating budget, the following faculty and staff – both current and former – supported this year’s fundraising efforts.

Annual Report 2022–2023 Lawrence Academy 35
Endowment Funds
The Lawrence Academy Endowment helps to secure the long-term financial sustainability of the school, and the draw on those funds typically provides 6 percent of the school’s annual operating budget. In contrast to the LA Fund, endowment funds are permanently established, and their annual growth provides revenue to LA in perpetuity. Each year, the Lawrence Academy Board of Trustees approves a 4 percent withdrawal against the value of the endowment and directs that money to the school’s operating budget.
With some funds established more than a century ago, we wish to gratefully acknowledge alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends who have created — and continue to support — a lasting legacy honoring their relationship with Lawrence Academy and their deep connections forged here today and throughout the decades. The market values of Lawrence Academy’s endowment funds reflected below are as of June 30, 2023. Each of these funds offers ongoing endowment gift opportunities to support Lawrence Academy with a vision to secure its future.
