real life made simple
tricks, tips and ideas we love
this month Your beauty look doesn’t need to be intricate to make an impact. A berry lip and glowing skin are always in.
1
SOFT SPOT In a sea of black and navy, you’ll stand out this holiday season by embracing a lighter, brighter palette. Intimidated? Stick to easy-to-wear shades, like pastel pink or dove grey, from head to toe.
2
FOOLPROOF FESTOONING
Decking the tree can feel like a bit of a Goldilocks situation: You don’t want an underdecorated look, but you don’t want to go over the top, either. The good news is we’ve done the math for you. For each foot of your tree’s height, you require about nine feet of garland, 20 ornaments and 100 lights.
Don’t forget to patch test the fabric of the garment to make sure whatever you use doesn’t stain it.

Ever experience the frustration of a caught zipper? Gently rub a wax candle or petroleum jelly (or a waxy lip balm, if you’re on the go) on the closed teeth. You should then be able to slide the zipper open and closed with ease.

Top Tips
Sift chopped candy canes through a finemesh sieve to remove the fine dust from the large beautiful pieces before scattering them over the melted chocolate layer on our Chocolate Tofee Crackle. Save the candy cane dust to sprinkle over hot chocolate or use to rim cocktails.

TEXTURED TOUCHES The best way to give your casual outfits a holiday spin is with textured accessories. A velvet watchband offers up soft romance if you’re looking for something subtle, while a faux-fur scarf oozes luxury for the glamour-minded.

Hasselback potatoes first appeared at the Hasselbacken restaurant in Stockholm. Traditionally, the potatoes are sliced about halfway through, then baked with butter and a bread crumb topping. In this issue, we’ve turned the classic dish into a deliciously cheesy casserole. Find the recipe on page 118.
“A dysfunctional family is any family with more than one person in it.” We can’t help but agree with author Mary Karr— especially around the holidays. For beautifully shaped and decorated cookies, invest in these cookie cutters, piping tips and ofset spatula by Ateco. We used them for “Classic Cookies” (page 124). They’ll last a baker’s lifetime. Embrace the more mature version of sparkle for your eyes.
GLITTER VERSUS SHIMMER SHADE
FINDER DEPENDING ON YOUR EYE COLOUR, CERTAIN SHADES WILL MAKE YOUR PEEPERS POP!
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GLITTER AND SHIMMER IS ONE OF TEXTURE AND SIZE. GLITTER TENDS TO HAVE LARGER SPARKLY PIECES, WHICH CAN OFFER A BIT OF A 3D EFFECT, WHEREAS SHIMMERY FINISHES HAVE SMALLER SPARKLY PARTICLES THAT HAVE MORE OF A VELVETY TEXTURE. IF SHIMMER IS VELVET, THEN GLITTER IS SEQUINS.

Grace Lee, lead artist for Maybelline New York, shares her tips for embracing shimmer and shine— especially if you’re wary of the trend. Her own ethos? “I’m all for it—as long as it’s in moderation.”
Green eyes
Hazel and green eyes tend to have gold flecks, so choose shades that mimic those flecks (coppers) or contrast the green (rosy tones).
If you find glitter where it shouldn’t be, use a clean spoolie to gently pick up pigment.

“Make the shimmer almost like a fairy dusting of product,” says Lee. Piling it on is opaque and too severe; instead, keep it sheer and build if you need to. GLOSSIER Lidstar in Cub, $22, glossier.com
“You want to make the glitter application the final step of your eyes,” says Lee. You may even want to apply your foundation after so that you can brush away any shimmery fallout easily. Lee recommends doing this with a clean spoolie brush.
For an even subtler, but still very modern, take on sparkle, switch up the placement. “Use it as eyeliner, or even a highlight in the inner corner of the eye,” suggests Lee.

The little black dress is an esthetic shape-shifter, understated yet provocative. Affectionately nicknamed the LBD, it has been a trusted friend to women because when we put one on, we feel powerful and sexy. But you shouldn’t save it for special soirées. Lip colours ranging from cherry to burgundy rocked the Fall 2018 runways. Lee likens choosing a red lippie to selecting a red wine. “You start with a Pinot and work your way up to a Merlot—a little more deep and rich,” she says. Swapping vivid lilac for sooty black instantly softens a smoky eye. If you’re looking to bling it on—after all, it is the holidays—choose a purple eyeshadow with major sparkle or use your fingers to press micronized glitter over top of your regular shadow. Take it a step further by decking out your nails with a chunky-sparkle polish.
Lashing Out
There’s a reason exaggerated eyelashes are the beauty signature of icons such as Twiggy and Diana Ross: They can transform any look. And a holiday bash is the perfect occasion. Wear them with dewy skin and a vivid stamp of fuchsia lipstick. Lee suggests using a long-wearing lip formula if you’re going to be sipping on cocktails.

WHERE TO
START
STEP 1 Learn to see those small steps, the subtle shifts, the minute changes. Train yourself to appreciate psychic and emotional movement, which is often a precursor to big behavioural changes. (Hint: Look for wins not only in what you do but also in what you don’t do.) STEP 2 Acknowledge that small simple movement. Take a moment to breathe it in and credit yourself for the change. Celebrate the win. NEED SOME IDEAS? Here are some of the small successes my clients and I have celebrated recently. (Names have been changed.) 58 | CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2018
• Mila is in a toxic relationship with someone who criticizes and insults her until she loses her temper, then he blames their problems on her “anger issues.” Ultimately, Mila will need to either get her partner into counselling or leave the relationship, but for now, she should celebrate that when she saw the pattern begin, she refused to be baited and excused herself from the room before she blew up. • Angela is a workaholic. After an acrimonious
divorce, she uses her high productivity at work to prove her self-worth and as insulation against loneliness. Our goal is for Angela to see her worth beyond the employee performance review. Last week, Angela joined a Facebook group for dog lovers. She’s still on her laptop all evening, but now she’s working at connecting with others. • Barb battles anxiety. Her negative thoughts can cascade until she’s in full panic mode. She
has been working hard on controlling where her mind goes, but it’s a process that takes time. At her last appointment, Barb told me a story: Driving home from work, she normally listens to the news, worrying about another financial crisis, but this time, she turned on some music. Then, when she spotted a rainbow over the rainslicked road, she pulled the car over and took a moment to appreciate it. It was a simple and small pleasure that represented a sizable win for her.

NOURISHING YOUR HAIR FROM WITHIN Hair nutrients can be found in natural sources like millet, silica, and even apples. They are used by hair follicles as building blocks or as promoters of hair growth. Apples, for example, contain Procyanidin B2, a known hair growth-promoting factor.

I saw the supplement Hair Volume at GNC, and since the reviews were good and the cost low, I decided to give it a try.
The first thing you notice when taking Hair Volume, is that your nails start getting stronger. Nails react faster than hair, to a new supply of nutrients. But after a month or so will you notice your hair stops shedding and starts to gain volume.
AMAZING RESULTS I have taken it every day for two years now and the results are just amazing. My hair stopped falling out and appeared to grow faster and thicker. I did not tell my beautician I was taking a hair supplement so when she cut my hair, she asked what I was doing because my hair seemed so much thicker now. Since I had amazing results, my mother began taking it as well, and her hair was thinner than mine. Needless to say, she now takes it daily. Her hair is thicker, stronger and it even helped her with gray hairs, she says.

ay you live in Japan—far away from most of your family back in Canada—and you can’t make it home for the holidays. In Tokyo, you’d never have to celebrate alone. For a reasonable 40,000 yen (or about C$470), you could hire a couple for four hours to substitute as parents and come over for Christmas; they could help with dinner prep, open presents and sing a few carols—and, if you were feeling really homesick, you could get your rent-a-mom to make comments about your brother’s single status and your (albeit small) weight gain. It’s not that strange an idea, considering that the latest census survey—published in 2016—shows

Give your time to those in need.
One surefire way to feel less alone is to give back. Over and over again, studies show that volunteering begets happiness, so this is the perfect solution for anyone who is sad to be far from their relatives. Serve dinner at a soup kitchen, sort cans at a food bank, answer letters to Santa, deliver stockings of toiletries to women’s shelters, fulfill wish lists of kids in need or spend time at a retirement home. Because if you can’t have your ideal holiday, you can surely help someone else achieve theirs—it’s the best gift you can give yourself.
there are more Canadians who live by themselves than ever before, and about three million Canucks live abroad. But even if you aren’t alone in your home province, you may not have extended family (or immediate kin) living close enough to share the holidays with. The thing is, being separated by too many kilometres when the festive season rolls around can really take its toll on some of us. (Bah, humbug, indeed.) And whether you’re missing mom’s turkey stuffing or tales of your sister’s ongoing relationship drama, or if it’s the first year you won’t be lighting the menorah candles with your kids, there are ways you can close the gap and feel near to dear ones. Here’s how.
Spending the holidays sans family doesn’t have to be depressing. Redefine how you spend the season and find happiness in what surrounds you.
2
MAKE NEW TRADITIONS WITH YOUR “CHOSEN FAMILY.”
You may long for that family Christmas feeling, but you shouldn’t be lost without it, and spending time with friends who feel as close as family can help keep your yearning for home at bay. Start traditions with those individuals. Whether it’s a Hallmark movie marathon, an ugly sweater party, a decadent cookie exchange or a night of ice skating, scheduling festive activities with friends gives you something to look forward to—and still counts as spending the holidays with your nearest and dearest.

Skype in for holiday dinner.
Celebrate virtually. No doubt you watch for social media updates and photos from family members, but if you haven’t already, consider starting a private Facebook group where your family can share pictures, chat in real time or post messages for one another and show of the decorated tree, the kids’ snowman or all that gift unwrapping. And don’t forget to phone (or, even better, Skype or FaceTime); go ahead and interrupt the party or dinner you’re missing out on! Schedule the call with the host and get partygoers to pass the phone from person to person, with each spending a few minutes celebrating with you—bonus points if you make yourself a plate of something they’re serving and post it to the group.
Find ways to build memories, ignite conversations and inspire inside jokes with loved ones who are living far away.
Share experiences from afar.
Finding, buying and wrapping the perfect gift is another opportunity to feel connected—it’s a way to keep your loved ones top of mind when you’re out and about this season. Take it a step further and source an experience you can share or live vicariously through. Find something you recently did (and loved) or want to do in your city that’s being replicated where your loved one lives, like a play, a choir performance or an art-night event. Send your parents to dinner at a restaurant you’ve been dying to try in their town. Give your brother a gift card for the movies, then watch the same flicks so you can compare reviews. Or pay for your sister to take some Zumba or burlesque workouts (hey, don’t knock it till you try it) and dish on the phone after classes.

Surround yourself with notions of home. When decking your halls, put the items that remind you of your loved ones front and centre (even if it’s your nana’s kitschy crocheted Santa tissue cozy). Ask everyone you miss to send you an ornament that represents them to hang prominently on your tree (they may not match, but they’ll be meaningful).

Having—and practising—rituals has been shown to bring families closer, ofer a sense of belonging and lessen feelings of loneliness, whether you’re celebrating in the same room, virtually or solo. There’s comfort in knowing that, however far apart you are, you and your siblings are doing the same stuf, such as baking Grandma’s famous cookies, listening (and singing along) to Boney M.’s Christmas album, sipping extra-strong eggnog and wearing a brand-new set of holiday-themed jammies.

CHRISTMAS MIRACLES
winter getaways.
Paris,
FRANCE
These magically merry destinations are so heavily adorned for the holidays that you might as well be visiting the North Pole.
The City of Light is downright luminescent come Christmastime, with every corner seemingly touched by Kris Kringle. Strolling the streets was dazzling, whether we were window shopping
I love the staircase in Shakespeare and Company, a beautiful bookstore where I bought a great many Christmas gifts. (Oprah voice: “You get a book! You get a book! Everybody gets a book!”)
I first travelled there two years ago with my husband’s family (my mother-in-law has been going since she was a kid). I fell for its rocky beaches, salty ocean air, lobster rolls and the annual Christmas Prelude, which kicks of with a treelighting ceremony, followed by 10 days of merrymaking. Shops dish out apple cider, the holiday-hat parade is a hoot and Santa rolls in on a lobster boat. This year will be the first time our daughter—who’s now two and a half—will be able to truly delight in this place (and grow up to love it as much as her Baba does).

along the twinkle-lightlined Champs-Élysées, poking around the multiple Christmas markets or marvelling at the elaborate displays at the Galeries Lafayette (which almost rivalled the panoramic view from the roof). When we tired of shopping, we sipped Champagne on a dinner cruise along the Seine, indulged in arguably the world’s best hot chocolate at Angelina and burned the calories of touring museums and dancing in our seats at the Crazy Horse cabaret (whose stage was reproduced for Beyonce’s “Partition” music video). It’s true that Paris feels like one of the most romantic places on Earth— even when you’re there with a bonne amie.

Lapland, FINLAND
Childhood dreams come to life in this winter wonderland on the Arctic Circle, where Santa and Mrs. Claus summer with their favourite elves and 190,000 reindeer roam free. My seven-year-old daughter, Maddie, was equally enamoured with meeting the “celebrity couple,” dogsledding, watching the northern lights dance across the sky and playing in the snow. My highlight was seeing how happy she was.

From November to May, the region is covered in about a metre of snow… and Maddie couldn’t get enough of it. She didn’t ever seem to get cold!
New York City, NEW YORK
While I was there, we strolled through the most magical snowfall, where oversize confetti-like snowflakes made everything glisten.
Maybe it’s because I grew up watching Home Alone 2, but visiting New York City over the holidays feels so right. There are the traditional sights to be seen—the happy couples skating at Rockefeller Center, the extravagant window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue, the snow-topped trees in Bryant Park—but the entire city is magical. I visited my S.O. there last year during a glorious snowfall and have the warmest
memories (despite how cold and wet we were!). We went to all the clichéd destinations, and along the way, we stopped to do some shopping (hello, Sézane!) and eat decadent meals (Balthazar with its festive trimmings is so dreamy). But my favourite part? Going back to his place to warm up and share a bottle of red, a cozy blanket and lots of laughs. —RENÉE REARDIN, SENIOR DIGITAL EDITOR

Dubai,
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Known for over-the-top luxury, Dubai didn’t disappoint—especially when I laid eyes on this incredible 850-squaremetre swimming pool.
MUST-DO I treated myself to the ultimate indulgence at The Palm: a hammam-inspired Désert d’Orient body treatment at the Guerlain Spa. Merry Christmas, me! 68 | CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2018
I’ve always been fascinated with Dubai’s reputation for decadence and over-the-top architecture (remember how the Burj Khalifa surpassed the CN Tower as the world’s tallest freestanding structure in 2007?)—and I justified this luxe trip as the ultimate gift to myself. After a crazy-busy year in my new role at Canadian Living (and the 13-hour flight from Toronto, which I only survived thanks to Emirates Airlines’ business class!), the soothing elegance of the palatial One&Only Royal Mirage
resort was a welcome respite. From the sweeping view of the private coastline from my room to the spectacular service (there’s a pool attendant who ofers sunglass cleaning), perfection abounded. A short boat ride across the bay took me to the equally opulent One&Only The Palm. A calm oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai, the resort is so spacious it feels empty even when it’s at full occupancy. The best part? My beautiful bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom itself.

Who could have imagined that the two things I’d love most about my dream trip to the luxurious One&Only Reethi Rah resort in the Maldives would be the bicycle I rode along the manicured beach and the Hawksbill turtle I snorkelled alongside on a shallow reef in the crystal-blue Indian Ocean? That’s not to say that this island oasis wasn’t amazing in every other way—because it was. OUR STAFF REVIEWERS Sara Cation has wept her way through a litany of literary heartbreaks, from The Little Prince to A Little Life, but she’s buoyed by the likes of Shteyngart and Safran Foer. She reads anything set in North Korea or India but never touches self-help or romances. Alexandra Donaldson loves reading literary fiction, essay collections, dark humour, Canadian authors and magical realism. This, and the fact that she’s one of our resident fashion editors, makes her the closest thing we have to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Amanda Etty has an affinity for nail-biting thrillers and smart, funny books written by smart, funny women. She’s always on the hunt for her next favourite novel, although she’s currently working her way through a stack of parenting books (toddlers, right?). Suzanne Moutis almost always has her nose in a book, be it Golden Age mystery, Second World War history or Hollywood tell-all. She unapologetically loves Regency romances and young adult fiction but flatly refuses to read anything that will make her cry.

Health-care pros tell us their patients’ most-asked questions. This issue, our experts talk about autoimmune diseases and lifestyle-related illnesses.
Q
What are autoimmune diseases? Who gets them?
Q
What are lifestylerelated illnesses and how can I modify my risk factors?
Dr. Hochman says
Bawden says
When the immune system mistakenly attacks our own tissues, it can result in tissue inflammation and damage, causing symptoms and signs of what’s called an autoimmune disease. There are many types of autoimmune diseases that afect various parts of the body and people of diferent ages. For example, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease of the joints, and multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the neurological system. In general, risk increases if you have relatives with an autoimmune disease; specific factors vary across disorders. Diagnosis begins with assessment by your family doctor, who may request blood work and imaging before referring you to a specialist. Although treatments can’t cure autoimmune diseases, medications can help control symptoms, especially when complemented by lifestyle modifications, such as increasing physical activity, following a healthy diet and getting enough good sleep.
These are illnesses that occur or worsen because of poor lifestyle choices, including the food you eat, how active you are or whether you smoke. Hypertension is an example of a lifestyle-related illness; so are obesity and Type 2 diabetes, which is most often seen in overweight people. By incorporating positive approaches, people can see and feel improvements in their health and decrease the likelihood of developing these conditions. Risk factors for diseases can be modified by maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise; avoiding smoking; limiting alcohol consumption; managing stress; and following sleep-hygiene strategies. There are endless benefits to adopting a healthy lifestyle; for instance, planned, purposeful and repeated physical activity can help prevent cardiac events and provide modest protection from cancers. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle may be a stronger cause of mortality than smoking.

BEAUTY
Reap the benefits of antioxidant-rich buckwheat by adding these products to your self-care routine. (It’s especially soothing on the skin.)
DR. HAUSCHKA Soothing Mask, $63, thebay.com.
DID YOU KNOW? Buckwheat is sometimes used to stuff pillows as an alternative for those allergic to feathers, dust and pollen.
A staple in Asian and eastern European diets for centuries, the buckwheat plant is a close cousin of rhubarb. The hulled seeds, called groats, are gluten-free and can be cooked on their own or milled into flour for use in baked goods.
1 Buckwheat has a unique
nutritional profile that contains a significant amount of antioxidants, including rutin, a compound shown to be protective against inflammation, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
2 Buckwheat is one of the
few plant-based foods that
contains all nine essential amino acids. One cup of cooked buckwheat groats has six grams of high-quality protein, a form that’s easily digested and absorbed.
3 A quarter cup of buck-
wheat contains eight percent of your recommended daily
intake of iron. Pair it with vitamin C–rich foods, like citrus fruit, to help boost iron absorption.
4 The bran of buckwheat
groats has more soluble fibre than wheat or oat bran, which lowers blood cholesterol levels and helps keep you feeling full.

The promise of a quick pick-me-up by indulging in our favourite dessert is hard to resist when we’re feeling down. But ignoring the siren call of sweets is exactly what you should be doing when you’re feeling that way, say experts. Instead, opt for a moodelevating bowl of blueberries or a handful of walnuts, both packed with nutrients that help promote mental well-being. “The brain needs 50 different nutrients to function,” says Christina Seely, a clinical dietitian at the Parkwood Institute for Mental Health Care in London, Ont. “A deficiency in any nutrient can impact brain function and mental health.” Considering that studies report that diet can reduce the prevalence of depression by up to 40 percent, it’s worth fuelling our bodies properly to optimize our brains while keeping stress, anxiety and depression at bay. Here’s a look at some key mood-enhancing nutrients and how to incorporate them into your diet.
Magnesium According to Vancouver-based registered dietitian Desiree Nielsen, evidence suggests that a diet low in magnesium is associated with increased anxious behaviour. “Magnesium helps relax the muscles, including blood vessels, helping lower blood pressure, which naturally LPSURYHV EORRG ÀRZ WR WKH EUDLQ ´ VD\V 1LHOVHQ DGGLQJ WKDW PDQ\ SHRSOH WHQG WR EH GH¿FLHQW LQ WKLV PLQHUDO 0DJQHVLXP DOVR VWLPXODWHV gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors (GABA is a neurotransmitter that eases anxiety and nervousness). Magnesium is found in legumes, nuts, seeds and dairy products. One of Nielsen’s favourite sources is pumpkin seeds; a quarter cup comes close to meeting a woman’s needs for the day. Other magnesium-rich foods include spinach, quinoa, black beans and chickpeas. Taking a supplement may seem like an easy way to get this mineral, but Nielsen recommends whole foods instead. “When you eat something in its whole-food context, you get more out of it; for example, pumpkin seeds also have essential fats and other minerals like zinc, which is important for nerve signalling LQ WKH EUDLQ ´ VKH VD\V
“There are higher rates of seasonal affective disorder in northern-latitude countries.” Vitamin D Population studies reveal that lower vitamin D levels are present in people with mental health conditions, such as depression, schizophrenia and cognitive decline, says Seely. Researchers are exploring a possible link, she says: “Suicide rates peak in early spring, when vitamin D levels DUH DW WKHLU ORZHVW XQOHVV \RX OLYH QHDU WKH HTXDWRU ´ 7KH DYHUDJH GDLO\ diet provides about 200 international units (IU) of vitamin D, but we need 1,000 IU to maintain optimal levels. “There are higher rates of VHDVRQDO D̆HFWLYH GLVRUGHU LQ QRUWKHUQ ODWLWXGH FRXQWULHV ´ VD\V 6HHO\ she believes that this may indicate how a lack of vitamin D contributes to depression. Because we can’t manufacture enough vitamin D from the sun year-round and there’s a limited supply in food (including eggs, some dairy products, salmon, cod, sardines and mackerel), Seely recommends taking a supplement with 1,000 IU. Foods that are overly processed or packed with added fats and sugar can have a negative impact on our mental health. “Research shows that regularly indulging in these types of foods significantly increases the risk of depression,” says Felice Jacka, a leading researcher in the field of nutritional psychiatry and director of the Food and Mood Centre at Deakin University in Australia. “A good-
quality diet high in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish and healthy fats is consistently associated with an approximately 30 percent reduction in the risk for depression.” Give a pass to sweets, packaged snack foods, fried foods and sugary drinks, and try to limit foods made with processed oils, such as corn oil, soy oil and sunflower oil, especially if you’re prone to a low mood.
TIP Be aware of how different foods make you feel. Keep track of what you eat in a food journal, noting how you react—physically, mentally and emotionally—over time.

TOSS & TURN
Reimer brought in shapely garden stools (they can be used as tables or seating) as a creative way to incorporate colour. For a refined feel, gifts are wrapped in elegant neutral papers, including blue-and-white ticking stripes and mini golden Christmas trees.
An easy way to inject seasonal sass into a room is to switch up the toss cushions. For contrast and impact, Reimer used a mix of patterns, hues and textures: gold velvet, damask, stripes and white linen.

“The palette reminds me of the CRISPNESS AND BRIGHTNESS of snow.”
From the cane-back French seating to the star topper on the tree, every beautiful bit hails from Bash Panache, Reimer’s posh Greater Toronto Area–based event-rental company. In the home, there’s nary a traditional red or green bauble in sight. “Instead, blue and white provide more memorable impact,” says Reimer. “The palette reminds me of the crispness and brightness of snow. I knew I could really make it sing by adding vibrant and sunny gold tones for balance and warmth.” A good example is the cozy family room. Or, as Reimer puts it, “fun, fresh, bold and colourful.” Who says blue isn’t for Christmas?
NOW YOU SEE IT Blue accessories animate the classic pale subway-tile-clad kitchen, set for breakfast on Christmas morning. “The modern steel-andacrylic stools disappear on their own, so I added custom blue damask cushions to anchor them,” says Reimer.
STORAGE SCORE Vintage embossed-steel loving cups in varying sizes make for unusual but interesting vessels to hold cooking uten-
sils. Reimer inserted greenery to lend a little festive charm.
GREEN LIGHT “Greenery goes a long way,” says Reimer. “On the kitchen counter, we laid fresh evergreen sprigs between the settings.” In addition, some are tucked into a velvet ribbon that holds enamelled white flatware. While you might cherish your traditional baking recipes, why not take the opportunity to switch things up with honey? Make sure to head to beemaid.com/honey-converter for precise swap instructions. By swapping out sugar in your cookie, cake, square and pie recipes for Bee Maid’s honey, you’ll not only be using an all-natural 100% Canadian sweetener, you’ll also be supporting Canadian beekeepers. The best part? BeeMaid Honey works seamlessly with so many of our favourite holiday recipes—gingerbread
When swapping out sugar for honey, it’s important to make sure you’re doing it right. Here are some general guidelines to get you started, but make sure to head to beemaid.com/ honey-converter for more help.
HOLIDAY BAKING TIPS
1
INGREDIENT CHECK: Pick up fresh spices and herbs for your holiday baking—they usually have a shelf life of six months, so if you haven’t used your nutmeg since last year, get shopping.
2
MEASURE SMART: When baking, it’s important to have accurate measurements—which is why we recommend spraying your measuring cup with non-stick spray before measuring out your honey. You’ll love how easily the honey slides into your bowl, and you’ll know you’re getting every last drop.
3
cookies included!
RULE OF THUMB
Holiday Honey Gingerbread
1 TBSP SUGAR = 2 TSP HONEY 1 CUP SUGAR = ½ CUP HONEY
GET FROZEN: Prep your cookies ahead of time, wrap them in plastic and freeze, then pull them out when you’re ready to bake. For cakes and muffins, bake and let them cool completely before wrapping and freezing.
4
HANDS OFF: We know it’s tempting to open that oven—the delicious smell alone is temptation enough! But keep the oven door closed and your hands to yourself—until it’s time for a post-bake taste-test, of course.
HOLIDAY HONEY GINGERBREAD INGREDIENTS 1½ cups BeeMaid Liquid Honey ¾ cup butter or margarine, softened 1 egg 5 cups all-purpose flour 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tbsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cloves DIRECTIONS In large bowl, cream BeeMaid Honey and butter until light and fluffy; beat in egg. Add flour, ginger, cinnamon baking powder and cloves; mix until combined. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. When dough is chilled, divide in half; return 1 half to refrigerator. Dust work surface and dough with flour. Roll out dough to ¼ inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters; transfer to well-greased baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove cookies from sheet and cool on wire rack; repeat with remaining dough.
