Brief Summary of Important Patient Information about DUPIXENT® (dupilumab) (DU-pix’-ent) injection, for subcutaneous use What is DUPIXENT? • DUPIXENT is a prescription medicine used: – with other asthma medicines for the maintenance treatment of moderate-to-severe eosinophilic or oral steroid dependent asthma in people aged 12 years and older whose asthma is not controlled with their current asthma medicines. DUPIXENT helps prevent severe asthma attacks (exacerbations) and can improve your breathing. DUPIXENT may also help reduce the amount of oral corticosteroids you need while preventing severe asthma attacks and improving your breathing. • DUPIXENT is not used to treat sudden breathing problems • It is not known if DUPIXENT is safe and effective in children with asthma under 12 years of age. Who should not use DUPIXENT? Do not use DUPIXENT if you are allergic to dupilumab or to any of the ingredients in DUPIXENT. See the end of this summary of information for a complete list of ingredients in DUPIXENT. What should I tell my healthcare provider before using DUPIXENT? Before using DUPIXENT, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, including if you: • have a parasitic (helminth) infection • are scheduled to receive any vaccinations. You should not receive a “live vaccine” if you are treated with DUPIXENT. • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether DUPIXENT will harm your unborn baby. Pregnancy Registry There is a pregnancy exposure registry for women who take DUPIXENT during pregnancy to collect information about the health of you and your baby. Your healthcare provider can enroll you or you may enroll yourself. To get more information about the registry call 1-877-311-8972 or go to https://mothertobaby.org/ongoing-study/dupixent/. • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known whether DUPIXENT passes into your breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your healthcare provider if you: • are taking oral, topical, or inhaled corticosteroid medicines • or use an asthma medicine Do not change or stop your corticosteroid medicine or other asthma medicine without talking to your healthcare provider. This may cause other symptoms that were controlled by the corticosteroid medicine or other asthma medicine to come back. How should I use DUPIXENT? • See the detailed “Instructions for Use” that comes with DUPIXENT for information on how to prepare and inject DUPIXENT and how to properly store and throw away (dispose of) used DUPIXENT prefilled syringes. • Use DUPIXENT exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. • Your healthcare provider will tell you how much DUPIXENT to inject and how often to inject it. • DUPIXENT is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection). • If your healthcare provider decides that you or a caregiver can give the injections of DUPIXENT, you or your caregiver should receive training on the right way to prepare and inject DUPIXENT. Do not try to inject DUPIXENT until you have been shown the right way by your healthcare provider. In children 12 years of age and older, it is recommended that DUPIXENT be administered by or under supervision of an adult.

How should I use DUPIXENT? (continued) • If you miss a dose of DUPIXENT, give the injection within 7 days from the missed dose, then continue with the original schedule. If the missed dose is not given within 7 days, wait until the next scheduled dose to give your DUPIXENT injection. • If you inject more DUPIXENT than prescribed, call your healthcare provider right away. • Your healthcare provider may prescribe other medicines to use with DUPIXENT. Use the other prescribed medicines exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to. What are the possible side effects of DUPIXENT? DUPIXENT can cause serious side effects, including: • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), including a severe reaction known as anaphylaxis. Stop using DUPIXENT and tell your healthcare provider or get emergency help right away if you get any of the following symptoms: breathing problems, fever, general ill feeling, swollen lymph nodes, swelling of the face, mouth and tongue, hives, itching, fainting, dizziness, feeling lightheaded (low blood pressure), joint pain, or skin rash. • Inflammation in your blood vessels: Rarely, this can happen in people with asthma who receive DUPIXENT. This may happen in people who also take a steroid medicine by mouth that is being stopped or the dose is being lowered. It is not known whether this is caused by DUPIXENT. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have: rash, shortness of breath, persistent fever, chest pain, or a feeling of pins and needles or numbness of your arms or legs. The most common side effects of DUPIXENT in patients with asthma include: injection site reactions, pain in the throat (oropharyngeal pain), and high count of a certain white blood cell (eosinophilia). Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all of the possible side effects of DUPIXENT. Doused in a cayenne-rich sauce and served with a slice of white bread and some pickle chips, this fiery fowl has skyrocketed in popularity even beyond Music City in recent years. Reportedly, it all started in the 1930s in the Nashville kitchen of Thornton Prince. Prince had come home from a late night out, and his girlfriend was none too happy about it. For payback the next morning, she fried up a batch of chicken and loaded on the hot pepper and spices—but her punishment backfired. Prince went wild for the spicy chicken and soon after opened what is now Prince’s Hot Chicken on the city’s south side. Prince’s is still going strong nearly 90 years later, and it has inspired a flock of new hot chicken joints that have popped up all over Nashville—and across the nation.

Air-Fryer Nashville Hot Chicken I live in Tennessee and absolutely love the famous Nashville hot chicken. In an attempt to make it easier to prepare, I thought I’d try cooking it in my air fryer. I’m so glad I did; this is almost better than the original. —April H. 1 Tbsp. pickle juice, 1 Tbsp. hot sauce and ¹ ₂ tsp. salt. Add chicken and turn to coat. Refrigerate, covered, at least 1 hour. Drain, discarding any marinade. 2. Preheat air fryer to 375°. In a bowl, mix flour, remaining ¹ ₂ tsp. salt and pepper. In another bowl, whisk egg, buttermilk, the remaining 1 Tbsp. pickle juice and the remaining 1 Tbsp. hot sauce. Dip chicken in flour to coat; shake off excess. Dip in egg mixture, then again in flour mixture. 3. In batches, arrange chicken in a single layer on well-greased tray in air-fryer basket; spritz with cooking spray. Cook until golden brown, 5-6 minutes. Turn; spritz with cooking spray. Cook until golden brown, 5-6 minutes longer. 4. Whisk together oil, cayenne pepper, brown sugar and seasonings. Pour over chicken; toss to coat. Serve with pickles. 5 OZ. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about Prolia. What is the most important information I should know about Prolia? If you receive Prolia, you should not receive XGEVA®. Prolia contains the same medicine as Xgeva (denosumab). Prolia can cause serious side effects including: • Serious allergic reactions. Serious allergic reactions have happened in people who take Prolia. Call your doctor or go to your nearest emergency room right away if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: low blood pressure (hypotension) rash trouble breathing itching throat tightness hives swelling of your face, lips, or tongue • Low calcium levels in your blood (hypocalcemia). Prolia may lower the calcium levels in your blood. If you have low blood calcium before you start receiving Prolia, it may get worse during treatment. Your low blood calcium must be treated before you receive Prolia. Most people with low blood calcium levels do not have symptoms, but some people may have symptoms. Some people have developed unusual fractures in their thigh bone. Symptoms of a fracture include new or unusual pain in your hip, groin, or thigh. • Increased risk of broken bones, including broken bones in the spine, after stopping, skipping or delaying Prolia. Talk with your doctor before starting Prolia treatment. After your treatment with Prolia is stopped, or if you skip or delay taking a dose, your risk for breaking bones, including bones in your spine, is increased. Your risk for having more than 1 broken bone in your spine is increased if you have already had a broken bone in your spine. Do not stop, skip or delay taking Prolia without first talking with your doctor. If your Prolia treatment is stopped, talk to your doctor about other medicine that you can take. • Serious infections. Serious infections in your skin, lower stomach area (abdomen), bladder, or ear may happen if you take Prolia. Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis) due to an infection also may happen more often in people who take Prolia. You may need to go to the hospital for treatment if you develop an infection. Prolia is a medicine that may affect the ability of your body to fight infections. People who have a weakened immune system or take medicines that affect the immune system may have an increased risk for developing serious infections. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms of infection: fever or chills skin that looks red or swollen and is hot or tender to touch fever, shortness of breath, cough that will not go away severe abdominal pain frequent or urgent need to urinate or burning feeling when you urinate • Skin problems. Skin problems such as inflammation of your skin (dermatitis), rash, and eczema may happen if you take Prolia. Call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms of skin problems that do not go away or get worse: redness your skin is dry or feels like leather itching blisters that ooze or become crusty small bumps or patches (rash) skin peeling • Bone, joint, or muscle pain. Some people who take Prolia develop severe bone, joint, or muscle pain. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these side effects. What is Prolia? Prolia is a prescription medicine used to: • Treat osteoporosis (thinning and weakening of bone) in women after menopause (“change of life”) who: are at high risk for fracture (broken bone) cannot use another osteoporosis medicine or other osteoporosis medicines did not work well It is not known if Prolia is safe and effective in children.

Do not take Prolia if you: • have been told by your doctor that your blood calcium level is too low. • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. • are allergic to denosumab or any of the ingredients in Prolia. See the end of this Medication Guide for a complete list of ingredients in Prolia. Before taking Prolia, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • are taking a medicine called Xgeva (denosumab). Xgeva contains the same medicine as Prolia. • have low blood calcium. • cannot take daily calcium and vitamin D. • had parathyroid or thyroid surgery (glands located in your neck). • have been told you have trouble absorbing minerals in your stomach or intestines (malabsorption syndrome). • have kidney problems or are on kidney dialysis. • are taking medicine that can lower your blood calcium levels. • plan to have dental surgery or teeth removed. • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Prolia may harm your unborn baby. Females who are able to become pregnant: Your healthcare provider should do a pregnancy test before you start treatment with Prolia. You should use an effective method of birth control (contraception) during treatment with Prolia and for at least 5 months after your last dose of Prolia. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Prolia. • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Prolia passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take Prolia or breastfeed. You should not do both. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and overthe-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of medicines with you to show to your doctor or pharmacist when you get a new medicine. How will I receive Prolia? • Prolia is an injection that will be given to you by a healthcare professional. Prolia is injected under your skin (subcutaneous). • You will receive Prolia 1 time every 6 months. • You should take calcium and vitamin D as your doctor tells you to while you receive Prolia. • If you miss a dose of Prolia, you should receive your injection as soon as you can. • Take good care of your teeth and gums while you receive Prolia. Brush and floss your teeth regularly. • Tell your dentist that you are receiving Prolia before you have dental work. What are the possible side effects of Prolia? Prolia may cause serious side effects. • See “What is the most important information I should know about Prolia?” • It is not known if the use of Prolia over a long period of time may cause slow healing of broken bones. The most common side effects of Prolia in women who are being treated for osteoporosis after menopause are: • back pain • muscle pain • pain in your arms and legs • bladder infection • high cholesterol Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. Richter says fish oil is the best option for combating joint pain and inflammation because it contains EPA and DHA, which are omega-3 fatty acids with anti-inflammatory properties. The American Kennel Club notes that fish oil supports a dog’s heart health, strengthens its immune system, promotes a silky coat, reduces dry skin and provides allergy relief.

Baking in Brooklyn southern roots, but now Shanika is transforming classic comfort foods into vegan delicacies with her family in NYC.

F SHANIKA GRAHAM-WHITE WANTED WINGS FOR DINNER, SHE WAS GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE THEM FOR HERSELF. And that’s just what she

did growing up in Florida. “My family is from Jamaica, so they were always making more traditional island foods.” Since the age of 11, she’s been experimenting with recipes for the foods she craved, like pancakes and cheesecake. Of course, she would make enough to share with the whole family when she prepared her favorite comfort foods. Today she shares those craveworthy creations with thousands of followers on Orchids + Sweet Tea, a blog that combines her design sensibility (orchids) with her southern upbringing (sweet tea). “In the South,” she says, “food is major, especially big breakfasts and all those decadent desserts.” A scroll through her Instagram reveals pictures of golden waffles, baked oatmeal dotted with fresh fruit, and syrupy sticky buns—enough to work up anyone’s appetite. In the spring, Shanika loves to put her zippy Vegan Lemon Poppy Seed Doughnuts on the breakfast table. The word vegan in front of doughnut shouldn’t be discouraging; it’s nearly impossible to tell that these delightful baked and glazed confections contain no dairy or eggs. Shanika has taken years to perfect her vegan recipes to keep them light, sweet and fluffy—and downright delicious no matter what your diet. “I’ve tricked my family a few times—I’ll bake

something vegan and I won’t tell them until after they’re done,” she says. “They’re always shocked!” Getting that perfect, fluffy doughnut texture is all about the amount of moisture in the batter. “Even an extra tablespoon of liquid can make these too dense,” she says. Shanika suggests being very precise with the measurements and adding the liquid slowly. If things get too wet, hold some of the liquid back. Another tip for avoiding flat, heavy doughnuts is allowing them to cool for a few minutes in the open oven after turning off the heat. As they slowly cool, the structure of the doughnuts solidifies to produce the cakelike yet airy texture that breakfast dreams are made of. To arrive at these tips and tricks, Shanika has done many rounds of testing in her Brooklyn apartment. The trusted taste testers are her husband and 5-year-old. “The doughnuts with sprinkles are his favorite,” she says of her son. “And my husband is originally from Brooklyn, so he’s really a pizza man.” As much as her southern heart loves a baked treat, Shanika does think about a well-rounded life for her family. She says she’s looking for balance in their diet, so she shares recipes for healthy bowls and nutritious meals on her blog, too. Her most Instagrammed recipes are a perfect portrayal of this balance: blueberry muffins, cozy banana bread, and a light and refreshing cucumber detox drink. She says a balanced day can absolutely start with a doughnut, especially when it’s vegan.

Collards Quiche I love quiche and wanted to make something that incorporates my southern roots, so I came up with this version. With eggs, cheese, ham and nutritious collard greens in a flaky crust, it’s a complete meal. Enjoy! —Billie Williams-Henderson, Bowie, MD Prep: 20 min. Bake: 35 min. + standing Makes: 6 servings 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 cup frozen chopped collard greens, thawed and drained 1 small onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced ¹ ₄ tsp. salt

BRIEF SUMMARY OF INFORMATION ABOUT XCOPRI® (cenobamate tablets) CV Rx Only (ex-koh-pree) Tablets, for oral use This information does not take the place of talking to your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about XCOPRI (cenobamate tablets) CV, ask your doctor. Only your doctor can determine if XCOPRI is right for you.

WHAT IS XCOPRI? XCOPRI is a prescription medicine used to treat partial-onset seizures in adults. It is not known if XCOPRI is safe and effective in children.

WHAT ARE THE MOST SERIOUS WARNINGS ABOUT XCOPRI? XCOPRI can cause serious side effects, including: 1. Serious or life-threatening allergic reactions which may affect organs and other parts of your body like the liver or blood cells. You may or may not have a rash with these types of reactions. Call your healthcare provider right away and go to the nearest emergency room if you have any of the following: • swelling of your face, eyes, lips, or • painful sores in the mouth or around your tongue eyes • trouble swallowing or breathing • yellowing of your skin or eyes • a skin rash • hives

• unusual bruising or bleeding • severe fatigue or weakness

• fever, swollen glands, or sore throat that • severe muscle pain does not go away or comes and goes • frequent infections that do not go away These symptoms may be the first signs of a serious reaction. A healthcare provider should examine you to decide if you should continue taking XCOPRI. 2. Like other antiepileptic drugs, XCOPRI may cause suicidal thoughts or actions in a very small number of people, about 1 in 500. Call a healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, especially if they are new, worse, or worry you: • thoughts about suicide or dying • trouble sleeping (insomnia) • attempts to commit suicide • new or worse irritability • new or worse depression • acting aggressive, being angry, or violent • new or worse anxiety • acting on dangerous impulses • feeling agitated or restless • an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania) • panic attacks • other unusual changes in behavior or mood Suicidal thoughts or actions may be caused by things other than medicines. If you have suicidal thoughts or actions, your healthcare provider may check for other causes. How can I watch for early symptoms of suicidal thoughts and actions? • Pay attention to any changes, especially sudden changes, in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. • Keep all follow-up visits with your healthcare provider as scheduled. Call your healthcare provider between visits as needed, especially if you are worried about symptoms. 3. Do not stop taking XCOPRI without first talking to your healthcare provider. • Stopping XCOPRI suddenly can cause serious problems. • Stopping a seizure medicine suddenly can cause seizures that will not stop (status epilepticus). 4. XCOPRI is a federally controlled substance (CV) because it can be abused or lead to dependence. Keep XCOPRI in a safe place to prevent misuse and abuse. Tell your healthcare provider if you have ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, prescription medicines, or street drugs. Selling or giving away XCOPRI may harm others and is against the law.

WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE XCOPRI? Do not take XCOPRI if you: • are allergic to cenobamate or any of the other ingredients in XCOPRI. See “What are the ingredients in XCOPRI?” • have a genetic problem (called familial short QT syndrome) that affects the electrical system of the heart.

Before taking XCOPRI, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, including if you: • have or had depression, mood problems or suicidal thoughts or actions. • have liver, kidney, or blood problems. • have had an allergic reaction to a medicine which caused a rash or affected internal organs, like the liver or blood cells. • use birth control medicine. XCOPRI may cause your birth control medicine to be less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best birth control method to use while taking XCOPRI. • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if XCOPRI will harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant while taking XCOPRI. You and your healthcare provider will decide if you should take XCOPRI while you are pregnant. { If you become pregnant while taking XCOPRI, talk to your healthcare provider about registering with the North American Antiepileptic Drug (NAAED) Pregnancy Registry. The purpose of this registry is to collect information about the safety of antiepileptic medicine during pregnancy. You can enroll in this registry by calling 1-888-233-2334 or go to www.aedpregnancyregistry.org • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if XCOPRI passes into breastmilk. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby while taking XCOPRI. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. XCOPRI may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how XCOPRI works. Do not start a new medicine without first talking with your healthcare provider. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a list of medicines you are taking, if you are not sure. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE XCOPRI? • •

Take XCOPRI exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. It is very important to increase your dose of XCOPRI slowly, as instructed by your healthcare provider. • Do not stop taking XCOPRI without talking to your healthcare provider. Stopping XCOPRI suddenly can cause serious problems, including seizures that will not stop (status epilepticus). • Your healthcare provider may change your dose, if needed. • Your healthcare provider will tell you how much XCOPRI to take. • XCOPRI can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. • Swallow tablets whole with liquid. Do not crush or chew. • Talk with your healthcare provider about what you should do if you miss a dose. • If you take too much XCOPRI, call your healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away.

WHAT SHOULD I AVOID WHILE TAKING XCOPRI? •

Do not drive, operate machinery or do other dangerous activities until you know how XCOPRI affects you. XCOPRI may slow your thinking and motor skills and may affect your vision. Do not drink alcohol or take other medicines that can make you sleepy or dizzy while taking XCOPRI without first talking to your healthcare provider.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF XCOPRI? XCOPRI may cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about XCOPRI?” • problems with the electrical system of the heart (QT shortening). Call your healthcare provider if you have symptoms of QT shortening including fast heartbeat (heart palpitations) that last a long time or fainting. • nervous system problems. XCOPRI may cause problems that can affect your nervous system. Meanwhile, to make the polpette, in a large bowl, combine all polpette ingredients and reserved ¹ ₂ cup tomato mixture. Gently mix until combined (mixture will be loose). With wet hands, roll ¹ ₄ cup mixture into balls. Place on a baking sheet. Add meatballs to simmering sauce, gently shaking pan to allow for more space. I went from there. I enjoy crumbling these over nondairy ice cream. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR OTHER FAVORITE CREATIONS THAT FOLLOW YOUR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS? I developed a pie recipe with mashed potatoes as the filling over gluten-free pastry. It’s Southwestinspired. It has tomatoes, green chiles, onions and cheese in the filling. I also enjoy a vegetable stew with mixed fresh vegetables, and again, this recipe has green chiles. I use small whole potatoes as one of the vegetables to make it extra filling. WHAT’S YOUR BEST-LOVED KITCHEN TOOL OR GADGET? Nothing fancy! I like a good frying pan, a heavy Dutch oven, a variety of wellbalanced knives and a food processor. I also use a slow cooker for my vegetable stew. It’s nice to have something that allows me to go and work in the garden or in my pottery studio while it does the cooking. This information does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your medical condition or your treatment. What is the most important information I need to know about receiving Neulasta® with the on-body injector for Neulasta®? • See the Instructions for Use for the on-body injector for Neulasta® for detailed information about the on-body injector for Neulasta® and important information about your dose delivery that has been written by your healthcare provider. • Know the time that delivery of your dose of Neulasta® is expected to start. • Avoid traveling, driving, or operating heavy machinery during hour 26 through hour 29 after the on-body injector for Neulasta® is applied. Neulasta® is a prescription medicine used to help reduce the chance of infection due to a low white blood cell count, in people with certain types of cancer (non-myeloid), who receive anti-cancer medicines (chemotherapy) that can cause fever and low blood cell count. Do not take Neulasta® if you have had a serious allergic reaction to pegfilgrastim or to filgrastim. Your spleen may become enlarged or may rupture during treatment with Neulasta®. A ruptured spleen can cause death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have pain in your left upper stomach area or left shoulder. • A serious lung problem called Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Neulasta® can cause kidney injury. Call your healthcare provider right away if you develop any of the following symptoms: swelling of your face or ankles, blood in your urine or dark colored urine, or you urinate less than usual. • Increased white blood cell count (leukocytosis). Your healthcare provider will check your blood during treatment with Neulasta®. • Decreased platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Your healthcare provider will check your blood during treatment with Neulasta®. Tell your healthcare provider if you have unusual bleeding or bruising during treatment with Neulasta®. This could be a sign of decreased platelet counts, which may reduce the ability of your blood to clot. • Capillary Leak Syndrome. Neulasta® can cause fluid to leak from blood vessels into your body’s tissues. This condition is called “Capillary Leak Syndrome” (CLS). CLS can quickly cause you to have symptoms that may become life-threatening. Get emergency medical help right away if you develop any of the following symptoms: • swelling or puffiness and are urinating less often than usual • trouble breathing • swelling of your stomach-area (abdomen) and feeling of fullness • dizziness or feeling faint • a general feeling of tiredness • Myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. If you have breast cancer or lung cancer, when Neulasta® is used with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, or with radiation therapy alone, you may have an increased risk of developing a precancerous blood condition called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or a blood cancer called acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Symptoms may include tiredness, fever, and easy bruising or bleeding. (16 oz. each) pound cake mix 1 cup shortening 1 cup butter, softened 8 cups confectioners’ sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 4 to 6 Tbsp. 2% milk 2 cups orange and 1 single brown Reese’s pieces Silver nonpareils 1 mini Oreo cookie 2 pretzel sticks

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare cake mixes according to package directions. Pour the batter into 2 greased 1.5-qt. ovenproof bowls and 2 greased 10-oz. custard cups. 2. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center of the cakes comes out clean, 40-45 minutes for custard cups and 60-65 minutes for bowls. Cool in pans for 5 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely. 3. For frosting, beat shortening and butter in a bowl. Beat in confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and enough of the milk to reach spreading consistency. 4. Use a serrated knife to level the cakes. Place 1 large cake, flat side up, on an 8-in. serving plate. Frost top of cake. Place remaining large cake on top with the flat side down and edges even. Frost top and sides. 5. For the head, place 1 custardcup cake with flat side up on serving plate. Frost top of the cake. Place remaining custard-cup cake on top with the flat side down and edges even. Frost top and sides. Trim 1 side of assembled head so it is flat, then place head above the body, using extra frosting to adhere cakes. 6. To decorate the cake, use orange Reese’s pieces to create four 3-in. circles randomly placed on the body.

Arrange large silver nonpareils and additional orange Reese’s pieces in decorative patterns inside each circle. Dahlheim of Charleston, South Carolina, in early 2017. She just didn’t know what, until she read about Jessica McClard, an Arkansas woman who was operating an anonymous food pantry. Katie loved the idea of a pantry where it’s easy for donors to drop off contributions and for those in need to pick up items without strings (or paperwork) attached. “The problem was, I live on a cul-de-sac, where nobody is just sort of happening by,” she says. “So I thought maybe instead of having only one pantry, I’d try to find businesses, churches or other people to help me make a little network of them.” That’s how the Lowcountry Blessing Box Project got started. The boxes are similar to Little Free Libraries that have popped up across the country. Katie began building a few by adapting cabinets she found at her local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and adorning each one with a decal that reads, “Leave what you can. Take what you need.” She went online and publicized the project, and soon the completed boxes were picked up from her garage, installed and stocked at various locations. A donor who was inspired by Blessing Boxes gave Katie $500, which she used to organize volunteers to build even more. Katie got the word out through local news channels, setting up a website and promoting the project on social media. In addition to nonperishable foods, the boxes often contain diapers, sunscreen, formula, school supplies and dental hygiene products. Katie suspects that many of those who are using the boxes are single parents, elderly, college students, people going through a medical crisis and people picking up items for others. “I don’t actually know,” she says. “And that’s the point…you don’t need to know because you’re putting that can of corn in the box for whoever needs it, and that’s that.”

When her mother, Frieda Rapoport Caplan, founded the company in 1962, she was a trailblazer in the industry, and Karen, even in her youth, was happy to follow suit.

Tell us about your beginnings in the produce business. Working for my mom was always my summer job, so one thing led to another. And not by her recommendation, invitation or choice, I decided that I loved sales and that I loved the produce business. So I decided to call my mom one day and say, “Can I come work with you after college?”

What’s your most valuable lesson from your mother? I learned how important it is to be nice to everyone. My mom passed away in January 2020 at the age of 96. What was amazing, especially at her memorial, was hearing others speak about her kindness.

What’s your fave recipe to make with Frieda’s Specialty Produce? My favorite recipe is the Stokes Purple sweet potato pie. It’s made with coconut milk, cinnamon and nutmeg.
