ADDING CURB APPEAL WITH FIBER CEMENT SIDING & TRIM
Located in the center of the heartland, HGTV Urban Oasis® 2021 in Indianapolis, IN, is a cozy cottage filled with modern charm. To add considerable curb appeal with this renovation, HGTV used a variety of siding products for an eclectic and eye-catching exterior. Here we take a closer look at how it was done with lower maintenance, long-lasting fiber cement materials from James Hardie, and how you can replicate the look on your own home!
Timeless & Traditional
An Appealing Accent
Bespoke Board & Batten
The home features Hardie® Plank in Select Cedarmill® finish for a natural cedar texture that mimics wood. Smooth Hardie® Trim accentuates windows and doors and enhances architectural features.
Shingle siding adds character to the backyard covered porch. This clean-lined Hardie® Shingle softens contemporary designs and adds refinement to rustic styles, all while giving the distinct look of cedar with less maintenance.
Hardie® Panel paired with Hardie® Trim Batten adds a modern farmhouse aesthetic. Use this classic combination for a board-and-batten exterior—or combine it with Hardie® Plank for a custom design.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT MATTRESS You spend one-third of your life in bed, why not make it wonderful? ― MAKE IT PERSONAL
Scale the size to your space and match the firmness to your sleep style. Map out your bedroom to determine whether a king or a queen would be the best fit. If you sleep with a partner (or pets!), it may be worth sizing up. Find the right feel—Firm, Plush, or Ultra Plush— based on your usual sleep position.
Designer Spotlight Corey Damen Jenkins @coreydamenjenkins
The nationally acclaimed designer shares how to make the most of your bedroom. What are the elements of a perfect sleep sanctuary? The proper color palette is essential. It’s important to know whether visual movement inhibits you from calming down. If so, stick to the monochromatic and avoid pattern play on pillows, wall coverings, and rugs.
― THINK LONG TERM
A high-quality mattress should last up to 10 years, so invest in comfort, durability, and support. Research how it’s made—the materials used for the interior and the exterior can have a major impact on comfort and durability over time.
Tips for finding the best bedding? I help my clients create their dream beds through a series of discussions, and ultimately, it comes down to taste and budget. Choose brands committed to quality and timeless design, and you’ll never go wrong.
― TRUST THE LEGACY
Seek out a brand with a proven track record. Stearns & Foster mattresses are crafted by hand, not massproduced. So much care is put into them that each mattress is handsigned by the Master Craftsman who built it.
What are some easy ways to refresh a bedroom? For a quick update, switch out the table lamps on your nightstands, or hang a fantastic mural or wallpaper behind the bed to serve as an accent wall. How can one make an investment purchase less intimidating? The best way to avoid mistakes is to hire an interior designer! We always say, “Measure twice and shop once.” Double-check your dimensions before making a big purchase— there are few things worse than buying an amazing bed that movers can’t fit through your front door!
― ELEVATE YOUR COMFORT
A Legacy of Design in Every Stitch
At Stearns & Foster, we believe that exceptional design lives in the details. This is why we have spent every day of our 175-year legacy committed to refining the details that make Stearns & Foster distinct. From velvet trim to hand-tufted top layers, our mattresses are meticulously crafted to look as good as they feel. Use our tips to help you choose the perfect mattress to complete your bedroom sanctuary.
LEARN MORE AT STEARNSANDFOSTER.COM
We’re spending more time in our bedrooms than ever before—from working to reading to bingeing the latest series. Adding an adjustable base to your mattress can optimize comfort, making your bed a life hub by day and a sleep sanctuary by night.

candle FAQs
sharp statement
Cone candles, from $24 for a mixed set of 2 (tallest is 13" tall), store.moma.org
Answers to all your—wait for it—burning questions.
Q : Why do candles smoke?
A: Think of the wick as a bridge between the flame and the wax. When it’s long, it’s harder to draw wax up, which means the flame burns the string instead and you get (harmless) black smoke.
wavy wonder
Remi Squiggle 7 1/2"-tall candle in fuchsia pink, $13, moderneaesthetic.etsy.com
Q : OK, so how
short should I snip?
Gold-plated-brass wick trimmer, $14, uncommonjames.com
A: Using a clean pair of scissors or a wick trimmer for chic points, cut the string so it’s about 1/4 inch above the wax.
Q : Is it always necessary
to display a pair of tapers?
A: Nope! While a duo on a dining table is a forever classic, we also love a mantel lineup of various lights. Stagger heights, alternate textures, and mix colors and finishes for the perfect unfussy look.
glam geode
Malachite Geode 3"W x 3"D x 6 1/2"H pillar candle, $49, amethystambercandles.com
Q : How do I get my candle to stay put in the holder?
A: Hold a flame to the bottom for a few seconds to slightly melt it, then press the softened candle into the holder until it feels secure. If your holder is somewhat bigger than your candle, try adhesive such as Stick-Um (available on Amazon).
Q : What’s the least annoying way to excavate an old nub of a candle?
gold rush
Ombre 12"-tall candles, $15 for a set of 6, shop.stylemepretty.com
A: An emery board will help separate the wax from the holder so you can pry the clump out. If that doesn’t work, place the holder in the sink and pour hot (not boiling—it can damage the holder) water on the holder to soften. Then give it another good dig.
Q : Flameless candles: yay or nay?
A: They’ve come a long way! With truer “flame” colors and flickers, they look more like the real thing these days and are a great solution for homes with kids or klutzes. Pottery Barn and Sandstone & Sage have good ones.

Carmeon Hamilton—winner of HGTV’s Design Star: Next Gen and host of the upcoming show Reno My Rental—shares her best moves. Carmeon shops for accessories, the quickest way to personalize a space.
switch out light fixtures
bring in vintage pieces
They boost character in any room. “I once saw a salvaged fireplace mantel mounted onto a wall,” says Carmeon. “It was a great focal point!” Little touches—a ceramic bowl from a flea market full of fruit or an antique vase on a bathroom shelf—do the trick too (without heavy lifting). 22 HGTV Magazine
put plants in unexpected places
“I like to elevate plants by placing them high on shelves or suspending them from the ceiling,” says Carmeon. Equally interesting: planters dangling from wall hooks in a living room or bedroom.
PAINT, ROLLER: GETTY IMAGES; LIGHT: PHILIP FRIEDMAN/STUDIO D
A different pendant over your dining room table is a budget-friendly refresher; choose a whole other style, shape, or material. If you’re renting your place, says Carmeon, “hold on to the old fixtures so you can put them back when you leave and happily take yours with you.”
fake a built-in
“Painting furniture such as bookcases or floating shelves the same color as the walls makes them look like impressive elements that were always there,” says Carmeon.
pop the ceiling
Most people skip it when they paint— it’s just white, it’s clean—but a moody color can totally transform a room. You can paint it back to ceiling white before you move out.
supersize the art
“Who doesn’t love gallery walls? But they do take some time to plan and put up,” says Carmeon. “One or two big pieces of artwork also give an empty wall presence, with less effort—and you make fewer holes in the wall!”
make a big statement in a bathroom
“I’m into large-scale mural scenes and wall coverings that have texture like grass cloth,” says Carmeon. “These days, temporary, peel-and-stick options are easy to find.”

books and objects by color is the easiest and cheeriest way to stir up a shelf, which is why we’ll never be over the rainbow. Continue one hue across two shelves and it’ll keep the look fluid (snag Roy G. Biv books at yard sales and thrift stores). DANE TASHIMA; DOG: GETTY IMAGES
how bad is it to not put your pet in another room when company is over? You might appreciate your dog’s tendency to jump on laps or your kitty’s insistence on being stroked; your guests, not so much. “And some pets can get territorial or fearful of visiting kids and act up,” says Stefanie Schwartz, D.V.M., a veterinary behaviorist who runs civilizedpet.com. Prep a dog to stay in a separate room by wearing them out with a long walk or game of catch, then give them a treat so they know they’re not in trouble. A chew stick smeared with peanut butter can keep a pooch busy and calm. Consider a baby gate instead of closing the door so they’ll feel less isolated. For kitties, a snack and a shut door should be fine.

how bad is it to mix old and new batteries?
“That’s like running a three-legged race with a less fit partner—not optimal,” says Alex Huang, Ph.D., professor and a chair of the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Say you have only one new battery for a two-AA remote that’s dying. Even if the remote starts up, the charge won’t last. The new battery has to work harder to make up for the spent one, shortening its life span. Meanwhile, the dud battery might overheat. Just get a fresh pair! It’s ideal to use batteries from the same manufacturer; different brands’ voltage can vary slightly, and an electricity imbalance could affect performance. There you go, science lesson of the day.
PRETTY BAD!
The ruckus may sound like the cubes are wrecking the disposal, but it’s the opposite. When knocked around by the spinning mechanism, “ice can remove food residue stuck to the chamber wall,” says Chris Nealon, a group manager for Moen. Left standing, that gunk could cause foul odors. Ice cubes are handy for dislodging softer, stickier stuff like pasta, mashed potatoes, and rice. Run the water when the cubes go down, and chase them with a shake of baking soda or a couple drops Guess what? of dish soap for max stink It’s SO GOOD to control. As eeeped out as you may feel, relax. Mice don’t travel in packs and typically forage for food independently. There’s a chance one squeaked in through a crack, says Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., chief entomologist for the National Pest Management Association. “Rodents’ common entry points are garage or basement doors where the rubber seal or weather stripping needs replacing,” he says. Evict the mouse with whatever method you’re comfortable with. To avoid future intruders, eyeball ground-level entries and solidify them as necessary. Check around the house foundation and the underside of window ledges, too, and fill with outdoor sealant. Also transfer dry goods, especially in storage areas that you visit less often, to airtight containers.
not so bad!
how bad is it to not mat a framed piece of art?
Mats are a smart idea for pretty and practical reasons, but not a must! The depth and dimension they give can make artwork stand out (especially smaller pieces) and colors pop, says Brian Cognazzo, master picture framer at Washington Framers’ Workroom in Washington, D.C. “Mats also act as spacers between the artwork and the glass, which prevents art from getting stuck if moisture gets in from humidity.” Choose an acid-free mat, known not to deteriorate and damage art. With gallery walls, leave some prints unmatted for an eclectic look. You can usually skip mats for typographic prints—they stand out enough.

OUR LIVING ROOM The minute I
spotted a photo on Instagram of a word search design on a wall, I knew I had to create our own in a big way. It makes this whole room—and teaches Hazel her ABC’s! Under the stairs, I fit in built-ins for a play area. And I made sure all the grown-up stuff is toddlerproof. The fabric on our RH sofa is performance velvet, the armchair (from my shop) has the kind of leather that looks naturally worn, and the floor is porcelain tile that’s easy to clean—the avocado that’s always on Hazel’s hands wipes right off.

Our house is painted Homestead Brown by Sherwin-Williams—perfect for our neighborhood, which is full of evergreen trees.
It wouldn’t be a toddler’s living room without toys, am I right?”
Hi, everyone! It’s me, Jasmine.
When HGTV Magazine asked if I’d tell my story for this issue, I was like, Wait, isn’t that your job?! But seriously, I’m so excited to share the details of the house that my husband, Brett, and I spent years on—literally, three years. (And hey, I did just write a book about renovations, so I’m game.) Our new home is in Huntington Beach, CA, just a few blocks away from our last one. Each of the houses we’ve built for our family has a nickname, and from the beginning I’ve called this The Roth Homestead. To me, a homestead is a place that’s comfortable and organic—as in, not super polished—where good times happen. My usual style is beachy chill with a sense of humor, and Brett and I totally dialed that up. During the process of building this house, we had Hazel. Then it became about wanting to create a cheerful, whimsical home for her, too. I think we pulled it off! Hope you get some ideas for your own place. Let’s go!
I think mixing shapes makes shelves not boring.”
OUR KITCHEN
We like to have people over, and if you follow us on Instagram, you know that Brett is an amazing cook and I’m pretty handy in the kitchen myself. Since we spend a ton of time here, we wanted it to be nice and airy. We chose open shelves instead of upper cabinets (mama needs her coffee mugs handy!) and a light oak wood for the lowers. The island is huge, 10 feet long, so there’s plenty of room for prep. One part is granite and the part where you sit is wood—that makes it special.
A gingham runner adds a pinch of cute.”

Cooking is even more fun now that Hazel can try a taste of everything.”
HGTV Magazine 57
house tours OUR DINING ROOM My goal was to create a space so cool and casual that we’d always want to have dinner here, not just big-deal meals. I paired a mash-up of chairs I had in storage with a simple CB2 table, way more low-key than a table set. The epic chandelier from Anthropologie—I’m obsessed—felt a little fancy at first. Putting plaid wallpaper by Astek on the fireplace wall relaxed it right up, like throwing a flannel shirt over a ball gown. Now this room is as awesome for takeout sushi as it is for Thanksgiving!
I dig this chandelier for its old-school candelabra vibe with a modern beachy twist.”
A multicolor rug is playful and it hides stains. Joy!”

A large canvas hides our T V. It’s no biggie to take on and off."
OUR GAME ROOM How can we make this the
most fun? we wondered. Put in a secret bonus space! Can you guess where the door is? Yep—the bookcase swings open to our speakeasy-style wine room. Also entertaining: a shuffleboard table from a dive bar in San Diego and a salvaged teak-root coffee table I got on Chairish. It’s where we play games and, sometimes, I let Brett win. Ha! Vintage-y pennants on the bar add to the fun.
We pass plates from the kitchen through this window.”
OUR OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM This is where you’ll find us at the end of the day, getting some fresh air and tiring out Hazel before bedtime. You can tell I’m into sectionals, which are the best for family lounging. Light sofas outside are totally doable with outdoor fabric, which I completely hose down. The upper cabinets open to reveal three TVs, my surprise for Brett when we were building the house—it’s like an at-home sports bar during football season.
I love a good wallpaper surprise, don’t you?”
OUR BATHROOM
I may not have time to take as many baths as I used to (parenthood: worth it), but this claw-foot tub still excites me. I got it from a project where we salvaged as much as we could before knocking down an old house. Me: “I’ll take it!” I had it refinished in black with gold legs. It turned out to be one of the most glam tubs ever, and then I found a fab glass chandelier at RH Baby and Child to go above it. Leafy wallpaper from Wallshoppe and a scallop paint treatment in Hay by Farrow & Ball that resembles waves brought in the chill.
HAZEL’S ROOM
This was the first room I finished, even though Hazel wasn’t due for a few months. I couldn’t wait to make a space for my daughter! I was going for pretty but not froufrou. To give the crib area character, I had a carpenter affix MDF trim boards to the wall (an easy DIY except I needed help getting everything done before Hazel was born), then we painted it Halcyon Green and the other wall Faint Coral, both by Sherwin-Williams. I’ve spent many hours in that rocker with my girl. It’s amazing to me that now she can walk across the room.

They’re all photos from our travels.” Vineyards use these wood stakes to hold up grapevines.”
OUR BEDROOM
The wall treatment is one of my favorite parts of the house, and I still pat myself on the back for pulling it off. I wanted something like reclaimed wood to give the space a beach cottage feel, but different. I went on a hunt and came home from the lumberyard with cedar grape stakes that I attached to the wall with pin nails and construction adhesive. The yellow patterned blanket by Garnet Hill is sunny, and I did two kinds of bedside tables because it’s always more interesting than a matching pair.

hen Angela and Joe Austin bought an aging brownstone in Brooklyn, NY, they needed all the caffeine to renovate it. They had that part covered—the Austins cofounded and run a chain of area coffee shops, called Milk & Pull. And the house had its charms: nearly 125 years old, 3,000 square feet, and full of original details. But it needed exhaustive updates, including raising low ceilings, replacing beams, reimagining the kitchen, and ripping out the linoleum that covered every single floor. They joined forces with designer Danielle Fennoy to balance jolts of color (usually shades of Angela’s favorite, green) with clean white, and choose pieces that snap against the woodwork and pine floors. The juxtaposition of old and new—and lively and low-key— make for a high-octane place to start the day, a calming way to end it, and special family time always.
Angela, Joe, Carter, 3, and Ava, 7, often hang on their front stoop.

It’s wall-to-wall hers—the 7-year-old had a say in every detail. She spotted the pink juju hat at local store Peace & Riot. “I said, ‘That’s a great choice!’ ” says Angela. “And then I explained where juju hats come from and their meaning, and she was all over it.” The canopy bed from RH Teen, bedding from Pottery Barn Teen, and rug from West Elm can all grow with her. That framed abstract watercolor is an original by Ava. HGTV Magazine 69

Angela, “but of course at bedtime the kids come in to put on their PJ’s, sing and dance, and do all the silly things they do to kill time and not go to bed!” An accent wall of subtle ombré wallpaper by Calico that goes from dark teal to charcoal and a dense blackand-white rug from AllModern cozify the room. Ditto the original shutters, which the couple unearthed during the reno. A vintage chair by Pierre Paulin picks up the yellow in the striking bedding.

hy choose a single decade for decorating inspo when you can do three? Designer Brian Patrick Flynn merged ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s style for one unique look in the HGTV Urban Oasis 2021. “There’s something for everyone,” he says. “The whole house is fresh and fab.” Brian embraced the hip Broad Ripple neighborhood near downtown Indianapolis, IN, by packing the approximately 1,350-square-foot house, built in 1945, with personality inside and out. A combo of James Hardie board-and-batten, siding, and shakes revamped the traditional exterior. He filled the inside with feel-good textures and photoworthy hues and features. “I wanted to match the charisma of the cafés, restaurants, and nightclubs in the community,” says Brian. “Even just hanging out at home will be a thrill!”

LIVING ROOM Welcome to the ’70s, revisited here with a far-out mix of patterns and earthy colors and a mod capiz shell pendant. Brian had the fireplace painted white (Pure White by Sherwin-Williams) and turned the corner ledge into comfy seating with a cushion and pillows.
KITCHEN A blush backsplash and walls (Sultan Sand by Glidden) and mint curtains nod to the ’90s pastel trend. “Gray cabinetry kept the pink from coming off as too sweet,” says Brian. Vintage caged copper lights have that industrial edginess.

A MULTILEVEL RED ROOF (asphalt) is a total eye-catcher next to white clapboard. “It gives our cottage a dollhouse look,” say homeowners Emily and Jacob Kaler. THE DOOR AND WINDOWS were put in by previous owners, but with classic eightlite style and transoms, they don’t stick out as updates. ADIRONDACK ROCKERS play off the color of the roof. Comfied up with lumbar pillows, they’re the place for happy hour.
In the planters (clockwise from top left): SWEET POTATO VINES are graceful, BLACK-EYED SUSAN add height, and YELLOW AND WHITE LANTANA pop.
A JAPANESE CEDAR TREE offers lush greenery yearround. “We like that it’s fluffy, which is why we never trim it,” says Emily. BOXWOOD along the front edge of the lawn create a natural fence; rounded ones are an elegant entry at the start of the path.

MAXIMIZING OUTDOOR SPACE is key in a small lot—this one is 0.1 acres—so homeowner Caitlin Lubatty had a patio built on the second floor. WHITEWASHED BRICK created a softer look than the original red and involves less upkeep than painted brick. (No chipping!) PALE GREEN SHUTTERS are pretty against the light brick and nicely contrast the wood details. It’s OK that the two sides of the house don’t match; in fact, it adds charm.
Left, two varieties of COLEUS (in the flower beds) and, above, NELLIE R. STEVENS HOLLY (by the shutters) liven up a neutral yard.
CEDAR WINDOW FRAMING is pricier than other wood varieties, but it’s resistant to rot and insect attacks. “A layer of penetrating oil once a year keeps them in good shape,” says Caitlin.

TWO TYPES OF SIDING— clapboard and brick—are funkier than one. The brick came from a textile factory that dates back to 1888. THE PATH “was always going to be brick, and it turned out even cooler with such a special reclaimed kind,” say Casey and Trista Koenigseder, who designed their Craftsman-esque house. GAS LANTERNS by the front door require running a gas line; the couple considered their vintage charm worth it.

HANGING PLANTERS are maintained with a watering wand—a watering can could spill over onto you. A PORCH SWING was a must for Trista, who grew up sitting on her grandmother’s. Casey secured the hooks in studs on the ceiling. A spring on the top of each chain absorbs shocks. DRAGON WING BEGONIAS

mpty nesters Denise and Rick Mauro were ready to make a big statement in their kitchen when they moved back to Houston. They’d been overseas for Rick’s job as a geologist and were looking forward to boisterous Sunday dinners with their three sons and their families. “I had come to love color as a result of living in different places and collecting art from all over,” says Denise. Guided by designer Victoria Sheffield (Denise knew her from book club), the couple decided to combine a daring shade of teal and a not-shy, Moroccan-style tile backsplash. Rick picked the granite countertop for its prominent swirls. Black accents and the fact that the space opens to living and dining areas with white walls keep it from feeling over the top. Still, in more ways than one, it’s the most spirited spot in the house. “When our family is all together in the kitchen,” says Denise, “those are our loudest and happiest times.”

been drawn to kitchen cabinets in this color on Pinterest, though she wondered if the teal would be too much. “It was a meeting of the minds when Victoria had that same color picked out,” she says. Definitely an unexpected move for a kitchen—but no regrets here.
