We all know Canada Goose for its top quality winter jackets that have been keeping us protected from frigid weather since 1957. Now the brand is cozying up our feet, too! Stylish, comfortable and totally practical, the company’s new line of footwear impresses by keeping feet warm in extreme cold temperatures. Plus, the boots are fashioned with durable water- and snow-proof materials, as well as having tough treads that offer amazing grip and flexibility. Trek through the inevitable city slush or embark on a snowy hike— The Journey boots are perfect for both. Canadian winter, here we come! The Journey BOOTS in Tundra Clay, $795, canadagoose.com.
BEST BLENDS There are so many things to like about Braun’s new TriForce Power Blender—too many to list— but we’ll tell you our faves. First, the smooth soup setting, which spins to achieve the perfect texture while heating the soup at the same time. Yum! Second, its iTextureControl interface, which allows you to use six automated programs and three texture settings for a total of 18 different blends. And last but not least, a specially shaped jug that makes for finer and faster blending. Braun TriForce Power BLENDER, $300, braunhousehold.com.

ZEST BETTER No one likes having a stuffy nose, sore throat or a bothersome cough, and there are certain aids we all turn to when a cold takes hold—cough drops, anyone? This year, we’re opting for the newest flavour of longtime lozenge brand Fisherman’s Friend, Orange Spice. A collaboration with Lesley Hampton, an Indigenous Canadian fashionista and designer who celebrates inclusivity and body positivity, the calendar is filled with more than 30 full- and travel-size luxury beauty products. Its design gives subtle nods to Lesley’s First Nations heritage, and 10 percent of every purchase made is sent to Indspire, an Indigenous organization with programs that support First Nations, Inuit and Métis students and educators across Canada. HO HO HOLD THE PAPER This year, instead of using single-use, store-bought, nonrecyclable wrapping paper, opt for a reusable option! These ones from Indigo are some of the many sustainable gift wraps on the market. They’re cute, eco-friendly and will last for years to come! Nota Reusable Eco GIFT WRAP in Holiday Baubles, Festive House and Women Skating, 24" x 24", $16 each, indigo.ca.
When we heard that so many products are full of water, we went on the hunt for some more sustainable options. Last month, we featured solid skin-, body- and hair-care products in our story “Set the Bar” (November, 2021). If you like the idea of less water in your products but prefer typical jarred serums and lotions, give Teaology a try. The products are infused with tea, instead of water, as their liquid base. We especially love the White Tea line (white tea is naturally rich in antioxidants). The Miracle Eye Cream and Miracle AntiAge Face Cream, plus the newest product in the collection, Peptide Infusion Serum, make a powerful combination. TEAOLOGY Peptide Infusion Serum, $33, White Tea Miracle Eye Cream, $65, White Tea Miracle Anti-Age Cream, $79, teaologyskincare.ca.

Winter
Wonders Six hot destinations to savour the cold.
If there’s one place on Earth where winter reveals its magic, it’s Canada. From coast to coast, this season enchants with silver-tipped greenery, pristine snow and sparkling icy vistas just waiting to be explored. Lucky for us Canadians, we’re a hardy crew, willing to brave the elements for some physical activity. Even if these places are outside your travel comfort zone, we’re hoping they’ll inspire you to seek out your own happy place. So put on your parka and boots, skis or skates and enjoy the outdoors!

Valley of Ghosts The highest point in Quebec’s Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, Parc national des Monts-Valin benefits from exceptional snowfall every winter. That makes it a real paradise for snowshoeing. It’s also an ideal place to admire trees transformed into snowy ghosts and frosty mummies. Several marked trails of varying distances are easily accessible for daytrippers. The aptly named Vallée des Fantômes route takes you to the highest peak in the park, Pic Dubuc, for a 6 kilometre round-trip hike in a picture-postcard forested setting. (Don’t forget to reserve your spot aboard one of the Le Fantôme Express shuttles that drops you off at the foot of the trail.) Parc national des MontsValin also offers cross-country skiing and fat biking trails. SEPAQ.COM/PQ/MVA.

2 Ice fish on Lake Simcoe Long considered the ice-fishing capital of North America, Lake Simcoe—located less than an hour north of Toronto—attracts large numbers of avid fisherpeople every winter. During the season, more than 4,000 small heated huts dot the water’s frozen surface. The lake is home to a wide variety of fish, including lake trout, perch and whitefish. Remember to register online for your fishing license, and an
One of the highlights of Alberta is Banff National Park—Canada’s first—nestled in the Rocky Mountains. And some of the most breathtaking sights within the park and surrounding area are the frozen waterfalls. From December to midApril, the imposing cascades freeze into icy curtains and present a fantastic scene. After a good snowfall, the park’s hiking trails are adorned with a magnificent, immaculate white coat worthy of a Disney fairytale. Beginners should check out a guided tour of the region as the paths are often very slippery; ice cleats are a must. More adventurous visitors can book an introduction to ice climbing and experience the frozen waterfalls up close with professional mountain guides. Check the website for current conditions before heading out. PC.GC.CA/EN/PN-NP/AB/BANFF.
Outdoors Card if you plan to fish for more than a day. To safely enjoy this experience, outfitters offer hut rentals equipped with all the essentials (fishing tackle, live bait, padded benches, etc.), while also taking care of digging the holes in the ice. There are also comfortable accommodations in the cabins and inns that border the lake. EXPERIENCE.SIMCOE.CA/PAGES/ ICE-FISHING.ASPX.

5 Go wild in
There are plenty of good reasons to head to Yukon in winter; seeing the northern lights is just one of them. From midAugust to mid-April, this display is otherworldly when witnessed from Whitehorse, where light pollution is minimal. Yukon is also a fabulous place to wrap yourself up and take to the trails with some canine companions in a dog sled. The territory is home to several world-renowned dog-sled races throughout the year. If the cold gets to be too much, immerse yourself in your hotel’s hot tub (many of the region’s accommodations have them). If you happen to look up and catch the northern lights while you’re doing it, so much the better. TRAVELYUKON.COM/EN.
4 Ski and stay
at Pin Rouge Very popular with tourists in summer, the Gaspé is also worth a trip in winter. Located just 20 minutes from downtown New Richmond in Baie-des-Chaleurs, the Pin Rouge tourist resort is a destination of choice for families who want to enjoy the pleasures of winter in a setting as warm as it is sumptuous. The ski area features more than 20 ski slopes suitable for all levels, with a high point offering a stunning view of the Chic-Choc mountains. Recognized as one of the best recreational tourism establishments in Gaspésie, the Pin Rouge resort is a wonderful winter playground offering a wide variety of activities. The tubing will delight youngsters, while 10 kilometres of marked trails will lure snowshoeing and cross-country skiing enthusiasts. To fully enjoy the experience, rent one of the 32 fully equipped chalets at the foot of the mountain. PINROUGE.COM. 14 | CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2021

6 Skate the Rideau Canal Running through downtown Ottawa, the Rideau Canal becomes the world’s largest skating rink when frozen (typically early January to early March), and it’s an iconic image of the Canadian winter. This 7.8-kilometre waterway is available for skaters of all proficiencies to take to the ice, free of charge. Even if you don’t bring your equipment, you can either rent some,
or just wander along the edges of the canal or the pathways above it to see twirls, tykes (and tumbles) aplenty. Remember to check the latest conditions on the Rideau Canal Skateway website before setting out, as temperature fluctuations can affect the safety of the ice. The site also lists whether amenities and concessions are open. NCC-CCN.GC.CA/PLACES/RIDEAU-CANAL-SKATEWAY. CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2021 | 15

motivation of the month R.S.V.P. Overwhelmed by the number of upcoming fêtes? Here are some tips for fielding holiday invitations. Whether or not you plan on attending a party, make sure to respond to an invitation in a timely manner. Waiting until the last minute can be stressful for both you and the hosts. A busy social schedule can be draining, so check in on your energy levels. When replying to invites, make sure you reserve enough downtime in between to recharge. If it all seems a bit much, limit the number of requests you accept, and set reasonable expectations for how much time to spend at each.

Saying “no” is also an option. Make sure to decline with kindness and warmth: express gratitude, be honest and keep it simple—there’s no need to over-explain. If appropriate, send a small gift with a card to the hosts.

We all spend money—and sometimes we regret it. Buyer’s remorse is common

1 Social proofing. These are ratings, reviews and labels that create the idea that a product is worth purchasing. Some common labels include “bestseller,” “most popular,” “highly UHFRPPHQGHG´ DQG ³UDWHG ¿YH VWDUV ´ These labels feel like proof to us that the product is valuable. We can combat this through awareness and questioning. We can ask ourselves whether it matters that something is a bestseller. And how do we know this? Is a product’s popularity important to me?

2 Scarcity. The intention of this technique is to prompt you to buy now because there may be none left. Phrases like “limited supply” or “sale ending soon” can compel us to purchase precipitously. They create an urgency that prompts spending. The techniques to combat scarcity are doubt and questioning. Do you really believe the store will run out of the runners you want? Chances are there will be more. And even if the sale is ending, sit tight. In a little while, the product will probably be on sale again.
3 Reciprocity. This approach gives the customer something for free, such as free trials, samples, in-store testers DQG JLYHDZD\V 5HWDLOHUV DUHQ¶W R̆HULQJ \RX IUHH VWX̆ EHFDXVH WKH\¶UH JHQHURXV they’re doing it because they know you’ll feel obligated to purchase something in return. Think about the last time you took a free sample from your local grocery store. Did you feel obligated to buy the promoted product? Challenge this thinking with awareness and resistance. When you see a retailer R̆HULQJ \RX VRPHWKLQJ IUHH XQGHUstand that this is a marketing ploy. You are welcome to the sample even if you don’t buy the product. That’s why they’re called samples. Resist the guilt and obligation and walk on.
The practice of retailers ending a price with a “9” has been shown to increase sales by up to 24 percent (wow!).
4 The power of 9. Research has shown that when we read numbers, the last one sticks in our brain. For some reason, humans identify the number “9” with discounts and deals. The practice of retailers ending a price with a “9” has been shown to increase sales by up to 24 percent (wow!). Awareness is key here. When you see products listed with a “9” at the end, ask yourself if the price really indicates a deal or a discount. In reality, it may not.
5 Online convenience. Online retailers are making it easier and easier to buy. Free shipping, gifts and bonus points are some of the ways they make a purchase more tempting. Plus, a site may save your payment information DQG R̆HU D RQH FOLFN RSWLRQ IRU TXLFN future purchases. Many sites display suggested products based on your
previous browsing as well. If you feel enticed, think awareness, time and friction. Awareness is always key, but often time works against us. So instead of pressing Add to Cart in a rush, wait a day. If you still want the item then, go ahead and buy it. Friction works to make buying harder for yourself. This could look like not saving your credit card number online so you have to go through the steps of getting the card from your wallet, entering in the number and then completing your purchase. Also consider unsubscribing from lists and newsletters. The bottom line? Avoiding temptation is easier than resisting it. There are so many ways that retailers are trying to get you to spend your hard-earned dollars. Some techniques are overt, and some are quite subtle, appealing to the brain and heart. Instead of succumbing, use your smarts to be aware, question everything and ¿QG ZD\V WR DYRLG LPSXOVH EX\LQJ STACY YANCHUK OLEKSY IS DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS AT THE CREDIT COUNSELLING SOCIETY. health hack of the month SNACK SMARTER, SLEEP BETTER As part of a healthy lifestyle, Health Canada recommends getting between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep is related to sedentary lifestyles, chronic stress and poor mental health. A new study found that sleeping fewer hours than recommended may also result in poorer snacking choices. More time awake creates more opportunities to nosh (and let’s face it—at night, most of us aren’t choosing the healthy munchies!). Skipping those midnight morsels, the researchers suggest, could help improve both sleep and diet overall.

THE BENEFITS CHOLESTEROL BUSTER Incorporating a handful of whole pecans into your diet on a daily basis can help protect your heart. Pecans contain monounsaturated fatty acids, which have been shown to improve total cholesterol and lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. A recent study from The Journal of Nutrition suggests that even a small reduction in LDL is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Along with fatty acids, other bioactive compounds found in pecans, including protein, fibre and micronutrients, may also reduce inflammation and improve insulin resistance, helping

to protect adults at risk for developing CVD and type 2 diabetes. UV PROTECTOR Pecans are reported to contain the highest total polyphenol content of all nuts. These plant compounds act as antioxidants in the body and offer protection against inflammation and many chronic illnesses. Ellagic acid is one of the significant polyphenols present in pecans. This acid offers a promising strategy for maintaining skin health by protecting against photoaging, including wrinkles, collagen breakdown and inflammatory responses related to UV exposure. What’s more? Your gut microbiome converts ellagic acid into metabolites, primarily urolithin, which circu-

Your metabolism uses arginine to create nitric oxide, a crucial signalling molecule in the body that acts as a potent vasodilator. Nitric oxide tells the smooth muscles in the blood vessels to relax, allowing them to expand. It is essential for maintaining desirable blood pressure levels and good circulation.

GET YOUR MOJO BACK DURING MENOPAUSE
T
Let's Talk About Intimacy
PHOT O CRED IT: DAVE L AUS
he hormonal shifts that occur during menopause are responsible for more than just hot flashes and mood swings. They signify a loss of estrogen and testosterone which can lead to changes in a woman’s body and sexual health related issues. For example, women may notice that they’re not as easily aroused, leading to less interest in sex. According to the Bonafide® State of Menopause Survey 2021, 53% of women surveyed engaged in sexual activity with a partner(s) less often after menopause. It’s a common issue, but women often feel embarrassed or ashamed discussing these topics with their partner or doctor. During menopause and post menopause, the body’s production of estrogen decreases, which also influences collagen’s ability to provide support for the pelvis. The tissue in the vaginal area and the bladder region loses tone and elasticity, which can decrease the body’s ability to keep things functioning as they once did. Women with vaginal laxity can be uncomfortable with vaginal appearance or may experience reduced sensation and pain during sexual activity. Beyond the physical symptoms, this can have a significant impact on one’s emotional health and relationships. “Oftentimes, when we stop having sex, we also stop being physically close and affectionate,” says Dr. Jess O’Reilly, a TorontoDr. Jess O’Reilly based Sexologist who holds a PHD in Human Sexuality. “This occurs because many couples only express physical affection as a means of
initiating sex. A lack of intimacy can also have a major impact on one’s confidence and self-esteem.” What many women don’t know is there are options other than hormone replacement therapy, lubricant, and abstinence. Silk’n, a global leader in home-use medical aesthetic devices for over a decade, has recently launched Tightra, a device that is clinically proven to treat the symptoms of menopause, tighten the pelvic floor, improve sexual function, and increase sexual sensation. Tightra is a safe, painless, and effective intimate wellness solution for intimate health-related issues. Cleared by Health Canada, Tightra is the first and only home-use device that utilizes Radio Frequency Energy, a medically proven technology that increases blood flow and boosts elastin and collagen production in weakened pelvic floor muscles. Tightra also stimulates the cells, enhancing natural lubrication, increasing sensation, and improving external appearance. 92% of the women who participated in Tightra clinical trials experienced reduced feminine itching, burning, and pain, and 89% experienced improvement in sexual function. Participants used the Tightra three times a week for 20-minute sessions for a period of four weeks. O’Reilly stresses that communication is an essential component when navigating changes in the sexual relationship. “Assumptions and expectations are often tied to a lack of communication,” says O’Reilly. “Don’t blame your partner or yourself. Share your feelings and speak your truth, even if it is a difficult conversation.”
Tightra retails for $499 CAD and is available on silkn.ca, shoppersdrugmart.ca, tsc.ca and costco.ca.

ingredient of the month OYSTERS
PHOTOGRAPHY, TANGO/C. FOOD STYLING, NATALY SIMARD. PROP STYLING, CAROLINE SIMON
Revered by some and not-so-much by others, oysters have been an important food source for humanity since prehistory. These saltwater bivalve mollusks are chockfull of delicious nutrients, including protein, zinc and vitamin B12. Old wives’ tales once cautioned against eating oysters in months without the letter “r” in their English or French names (May, June, July or August). Prescience? Perhaps, but we now know that oysters are at their best during fall and winter since they spawn in the summer months and become softer, fattier and more flavourful as they grow.
