From colorful red cabbage and ruffled savoy to your basic green variety, there are so many sweet, crunchy picks to play with. Here’s how to make the most of them:

HEALTHY COMFORT FOODS

57 Cut 1⁄2 small green cabbage into 4 wedges and brush with olive oil. Grill, flat sides down, on medium-high until charred, 3 min. per side. Cut into 1-in. pieces. Whisk together 2 Tbsp lime juice, 1 Tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tsp brown sugar and 1⁄2 tsp each red pepper flakes and salt. Add grilled cabbage and 1⁄2 small napa cabbage (cored and cut into 1-in. pieces) and toss to combine. Fold in 1 cup cilantro leaves.

In large skillet, cook 4 slices bacon (chopped) on medium until crisp, 4 min. Add 1 large onion (sliced) and sauté, covered, 4 min. Add 1⁄2 head red cabbage (cored and thinly sliced), 1 Gala apple (cut into 1⁄2-in. pieces), 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar, 1⁄2 tsp salt and 1⁄4 tsp pepper and sauté until cabbage is just tender, 8 to 10 min.

Combine 21⁄2 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp lime juice, 2 tsp honey, 2 cloves garlic (pressed) and 1 Tbsp grated ginger; toss with 1 lb large cleaned shrimp (chopped). Arrange on baking sheet and broil until opaque throughout, 3 min. Blanch savoy cabbage leaves until just tender, 1 min. Drain and pat dry. Fill leaves with shrimp and top with sliced cucumbers and scallions.

Think Before You Pink Mara Model, left, a beloved member of the GH editorial team who died from metastatic breast cancer in November, took time in the last weeks of her life to research and write about a few of the products that helped her through treatment. No pinkwashing here!

What is PInkwashing? When a company uses the pink ribbon symbol for marketing purposes without meaningfully supporting breast cancer awareness, that’s pinkwashing. “Some companies exploit breast cancer for profit,” said Mara. “The disease is commercialized, and patients are subjugated for their personal stories instead of companies educating, empowering and making changes.” Before you buy, ask these questions:

How much does the company actually donate? Examine the fine print for information on where the company shares its proceeds from sales of a pink ribbon product and in what amount. Some companies will cap the amount they’ll share, no matter how much is sold. In such a case, look to see whether the maximum donation has been met. If so, your money would be better spent as a direct donation.

Some pinkwashers claiming to support breast cancer research actually contribute to the breast cancer epidemic by using ingredients that can elevate breast cancer risk or donating to industries that do, explains Krystal Redman, DrPH, executive director of Breast Cancer Action. “We should do our research, be critical of products and fundraisers to ‘raise awareness’ and seek out information about where the money behind pink ribbon promotions is going.”

What gets supported? Because breast cancer is such a broad category, a number of organizations claim to advance breast cancer research but don’t explain precisely how. “Before donating, make sure the company’s mission and activities are in line with your personal values,” Redman advises. —Lizz Schumer

When I first learned that I’d be working at Good Housekeeping, my aunt sent congratulations and told me she’d cried when she heard my news. GH had been my grandma’s favorite magazine, and imagining me working here brought her both happy memories and a bit of sadness that her mom was no longer with us to cherish moments like these. Thinking about readers like my grandmother inspired me to work my hardest to keep up the incredible work of this iconic brand, and it made me reflect deeply on why people have looked forward to their Good Housekeeping issues with excitement for generations. Here’s what I believe keeps us all coming back: 1) Good Housekeeping is always packed with beautiful, delicious, useful, fresh, creative and exciting ideas for our lives and homes; 2) For over 100 years, GH has stayed true to its promise to be the most accurate, careful and trusted source of consumer info; and 3) We have heart! GH shares tons of real-life stories about people like you and me. Sadly, our hearts were recently broken when we lost a member of the Good Housekeeping family. Senior SEO manager Mara Model spent her days (and frequently her evenings) working to be sure we’d create content that would capture imaginations — and that we could stand behind with the brand’s rigorous dedication to accuracy. Not only did we lose a dear friend, but also GH lost an enthusiastic fan. One of the last pieces Mara left us was a story she originally wrote for our sister publication Town & Country about brands and products that helped her through cancer treatment. Like Good Housekeeping, Mara wanted to ensure that we consumers actually got what we paid for, by educating readers about which companies actually make meaningful donations to organizations supporting breast cancer research: “No pinkwashing here!” Sadly, breast cancer took Mara before she could see her top picks in the magazine — but hopefully you can help us support the cause that was so central to her too-short life (page 6). While they lived in very different times, both my grandmother and Mara Model loved Good Housekeeping because of what it has steadily

Easily erase smudged makeup. Unless you’re a pro, almost everyone gets mascara, eyeliner or eyeshadow smeared on their skin when applying makeup. But there’s no need to take it all off and start from scratch. Instead of wiping it with your finger, which can worsen the smudge, dip a cotton swab or a small makeup brush in a liquid makeup remover, then dab it directly on the spot to remove just the errant color. A: Yes — with a caveat. Collagen is a buzzword in skincare, but there is some controversy about what the ingredient, a protein that’s a building block of skin, can and can’t do in topical products. “Topical preparations containing collagen help skin look smoother because they help it retain water,” says Lian Mack, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital Center in New York City. “When skin cells are plump and fully hydrated, skin appears more supple and radiant.” That said, because collagen is a large molecule, it has difficulty penetrating skin’s surface when applied topically, she explains. “While applying collagen to the skin may not boost the amount of collagen within skin because it is unable to penetrate, there are ingredients that increase collagen production or prevent its breakdown,” Dr. Mack says, such as the gold standard, retinol (vitamin A). “Collagen rebuilding products help skin look more youthful because the more collagen we have in our skin, the less sagging and wrinkles we see,” she adds.

RESVERATROL FOR SKIN PROTECTION The health benefits of drinking red wine (in moderation!) are well known—and now the active ingredient that delivers those effects, resveratrol, is creating buzz when it comes to skin health. A polyphenol commonly found in the skin of red grapes, resveratrol “neutralizes damaging free radicals produced by the environment such as UV radiation and pollution,” says Geeta Yadav, M.D., a dermatologist in Toronto. “This cellular damage accelerates skin aging, but applying skincare products formulated with antioxidants like resveratrol helps mitigate signs like wrinkles, loss of firmness and dark spots.” The ingredient works on all skin types; apply it daily in a leave-on formula like a serum or a moisturizer for best results. 3 Laundry Myths, busted! Straight answers to common misconceptions Myth: A washer 1 cleans itself. Fact: Your machine may clean your clothes, but it needs an occasional cleaning too. Dirt, detergent and hard water residues build up over time, leading to germs and odors. Once a month, use a machine cleaner, like GH Seal star Tide, to clean and freshen. Pop out the dispenser and scrub it too. Myth: Bleach 2 removes color. Fact: Many, but not all, colors are damaged by bleach. To see if a color can stand up to chlorine, mix 2 tsp bleach in 1⁄4 cup water. Place one drop on a hidden spot, like an inside seam, wait one minute and blot. No fading or bleeding? In this Durham, NC, home, designer Becky Shea outfitted a nook with open wood shelving that makes it easy to grab essentials. “The idea came about because we had so much going on with the mudroom millwork opposite this nook,” Shea says. “It allows this little space to shine on its own.”

Hide supplies behind doors (and skirts!). With compact spaces like designer Kim Armstrong’s Dallas laundry room, it’s all about maximizing the floor plan. In this case, taking the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and using the space under the skirted sink did the trick. “In small spaces, you have to get super creative with your storage options,” Armstrong says. “It makes the room not only beautiful but also functional.”

Add detergent to the sink or basin as the water is running so it dissolves completely. Give the solution a quick stir to be sure it is fully mixed. Gently place your garment in the suds.

Immerse your garment.

Submerge your clothing item, gently squeezing the suds through the fabric. Let it soak for five to 10 minutes, turn it over and squeeze again. Soak for five to 10 minutes more.

Rinse thoroughly.

Carefully remove the wet garment and drain the sink. Fill with cool water, lay your item in it and swish to rinse. Squeeze out—don’t wring out—excess water. Roll in a towel.

Lay flat to dry.

Place the garment flat on a dry towel or a mesh rack, blocking it back into shape. When the top is dry, flip it over to give the back more air. Swap in a dry towel if needed.

Designers often encourage homeowners to take risks with wallpaper in petite spaces like powder rooms. For this laundry-mudroom setup, designer Elizabeth Gill complemented blue cabinetry with a playful wallpaper featuring gray blowfish (Mr. Blow wallpaper, abnormalsanonymous.com). “There isn’t anything else that is too bold, which allows you to focus on all the lovely blowfish,” she says. “If I had added a bright color for cabinetry or a multicolored rug, for example, it would have diminished the effect of the wallpaper itself.”

Convert a closet space. Using bifold doors instead of pricey cabinetry was the key to transforming this closet into a laundry room. To recreate the look, designer Jamie King of JLK Interiors suggests sticking to a closet that’s at least 3' deep and 5½' wide. Go for a quartz countertop to create a workspace, and install upper cabinetry for storage. This doesn’t mean skimping on style, though. “It’s important to have an element of beauty, which is why I added the Farrow & Ball wallpaper,” King says. “That way, when the doors are open, there is still a beautiful visual.”

Elevate your washer and dryer. Most machines come with an optional riser kit for ease of loading and unloading. However, this Ocean City, MD, laundry room already featured an elevated area that served as the perfect ergonomic spot for a washer and dryer. “By raising them, we were able to make the room a little bit bigger and make life a bit easier at the same time,” says designer Christie Leu. dry clothes Today’s dryers have faster, gentler cycles to help minimize shrinkage and prevent damage. Here are some things you can do to be sure your items emerge looking their best.

1 Shake out wet garments. As you put them in the dryer, give items a shake to help reduce wrinkles, fluff fibers and speed drying.

Avoid 2 overloading. You may think doubling up on dryer loads saves time or energy, but that’s not so. Stuffing the drum inhibits tumbling and slows drying.

Using sensors, automatic cycles assess when the load is dry and then stop. This saves energy and prevents overdrying. Timed cycles run for the time you select and are best for bulky items, like comforters, that take a while to dry.

Don’t ignore 4 puffy stuff. Filled items like pillows and down coats need a watchful eye. Every so often, pause the dryer and remove, shake and rearrange the item to ensure that all sides are getting dry. Toss in a few dryer balls to keep things tumbling.

Remove items 5 promptly.

Use a sunny color in a dark room. “No one is spending a ton of time in the laundry room, so go bold and have more fun than you normally would in a living space,” says designer Kelly Finley of Joy Street Design. The lively yellow color she selected for this layout also helped solve a design dilemma —

the space doesn’t receive much natural light. “Because we weren’t able to bring in more daylight, I wanted to go with something very bright and not overly dark. We also found a fun removable wallpaper that ties everything together,” she says.

For fewer creases, remove garments right after the cycle ends. If you can’t, run a steam refresh cycle if your dryer has one, or re-tumble the items on low heat for a few minutes.

Keep it clean.

Machine-clogging lint isn’t just a fire hazard; it also slows down drying. Clean the lint screen after every load, and clean the exhaust duct yearly.

3 Choose the correct cycle.

There’s no getting around it: Ironing boards are bulky to store, a pain to set up and take down and seemingly always in the way. Wall-mounted drop-down models or even over-thedoor styles are other discreet options. If you do only occasional ironing, these portable table or countertop styles may suit you just fine.

Simplify your sorting. Sorting properly is one of the most important steps you can take to make sure your clothing emerges clean and undamaged. You’re likely already separating lights from darks and sturdy fabrics from delicates, but it helps to do more. Wash heavily soiled garments apart from lightly soiled ones, and keep shedding fabrics such as terry cloth away from lint grabbers like knits and corduroy. Built-in baskets (like those in the above space designed by Sarah Stacey) are both accessible and seamless, but even freestanding units make sorting a breeze.

Measure detergent.

Place detergent packs in your washer’s tub before adding clothes. For other types of detergent, use the dispenser. Shake garments and place them loosely in the drum. When the washer is three-quarters full, you’ve got a large load.

Follow the label’s directions. Most give doses for medium loads. Add more for large or heavily soiled ones. Use too little, and you risk poor results.

Build your machines into the cabinets.

Start with a punchy graphic wallpaper.

Along with a mix of closed cabinetry (featuring $4 knobs!), designer Becky Shea incorporated cubbies to create an airy vibe and store frequently used products. “We measured every single cleaning item the homeowners use — from ironing boards to detergents to hampers — and went over their flow along with any existing frustrations during laundry time,” Shea says. “It opened up the space simply by not adding any drawer/door faces.”

This windowless laundry area called for a gut renovation, which included the addition of ceiling lights. But designer Kelly Finley also took it as an opportunity to make a design statement: “This allowed us to go wild and have the entire design centered around the wallpaper [Chloé Nova, from $137, dropitmodern.com]. We then chose complementary colors for the floor and cabinets to give the space interest.”

Their benefits are many, from improved muscle tone to better flexibility. “No home gym is complete without a set of resistance bands,” says Maloney. “They provide tension through the entire range of motion for an optimal workout.” Plus, they can be hung on a hook for easy storage, and you can bring them anywhere.

Resistance training increases muscle mass and helps support and protect joints. Start with a set of 10-, 15- and 25-lb dumbbells; add a barbell for more advanced training. “Strength training helps burn more calories even at rest, since the increased muscle mass boosts resting metabolism, which may be helpful to a weight-loss program or goal,” says Kercher.

Small exercise equipment can get your heart rate up. Kettlebells are a favorite of trainers, as the swinging action adds range of motion and an increased cardio workout; start between 13 and 18 lbs. Online training topped the ACSM’s 2021 Fitness Trends list. We caught up with Jess Sims, a Peloton instructor who leads classes in running, strength, cardio, bike boot camp and more, to find out how to thrive in the virtual fitness world.

What’s the key to sticking

1 with a fitness plan?

Think consistency over intensity. If you can manage only 20 minutes four days a week, maybe split between two strength and two cardio sessions, that’s great. Start small and build up to the high-intensity 60-minute workouts. It’s also important to stay curious. If you’ve always been a runner, check out a bodyweight class or yoga. As I like to say, movement is medicine. The more you mix it up, the better you’ll feel.

Any advice on how to find

2 the right online coach?

My advice is to try lots of them! The right instructor will change depending on the day. Some mornings you might need someone to kick your butt. Other times, when you’re not going all-out, an instructor who tells great stories will be a better match. If you’re training for a race, the right instructor might be one who gets into the nitty-gritty of technique. It’s not just about finding someone whose music you like; you need to listen to their words and their teachings.

3 munity through COVID-19?

Before the pandemic, people came from all over to my live classes in New York City to meet me and other members. Those aren’t back yet, but I like to go on Instagram Live after sessions and hang with the class. I’ll give shout-outs to members who reached a milestone, and everyone high-fives one another. Members host virtual meetups too. If they’re training for a marathon, they’ll do Zooms between classes, then meet in person for the first time at the race.

Fitness starts with exercise. But the post-workout rest period is what creates the results. “Muscles grow and get stronger as they adapt to the stimulus you subjected them to during those intense workouts,” says Maloney. His rule of thumb is 1 to 2: That is, after an intense training session, give your body two full days to recover. Lighter workouts might require only 24 hours of rest.

Following a warm-up, a light dynamic stretch before and then after working out will keep muscles from getting tight. “Everyone should consider a foam roller too,” says Kercher. “It’s a simple way to reduce feelings of muscle tightness before or after a workout.” She also likes the peanut ball, which consists of two tennis balls taped together — perfect for digging into muscles around the neck and spine.

Many of our favorite apps include meditation programs to improve focus, reduce stress and enhance sleep. The practice is embraced by health and wellness coaches, a relatively new profession focused on self-care and resilience. act fast. Cons often create a sense of urgency. “They want to instill fear or excitement,” says Kathy Stokes, director of fraud prevention programs with the AARP Fraud Watch Network. “For fear, it might be ‘This is the Social Security Administration, and your number has been suspended because of

criminal activity.’ For excitement, it could be ‘This is Publishers Clearing House. You’ve won a million dollars!’ ” Be aware that government agencies like the IRS will not call you out of the blue and demand payment. 3 They request payment in gift

cards. Stokes does not mince words on this: “Any time somebody asks you to pay for some obligation by purchasing a gift card and sharing the numbers from the back, it is a scam — 100% of the time. It is just not a legitimate form of payment.”

GH Institute Anti-scam strategies Scammers steal your personal info with fake websites, phishing schemes and malware. These tips can help you weed out scam calls and create strong passwords.

Turn on call blockers. Register for the FTC Do Not Call Registry (donotcall.gov), and use the tools built into your phone and provided by your mobile carrier (e.g., AT&T Call Protect, Verizon Call Filter, T-Mobile Scam Shield). Check your smartphone’s settings to modify privacy options or enable call-blocking features.

Verify the phone number. If you suspect that a call you’ve answered from a business is a scam, hang up and find a valid phone number to call to confirm that the company reached out. The same goes for emails and texts: Don’t click provided links or open attachments. Always check the email header carefully, and hover over hyperlinks to view the address they’ll direct you to. Do not call numbers provided in an email, text or letter; verify the business’s number before dialing. This advice works even for a person standing in front of you — ask them to wait while you call to verify that the company has sent someone to your home. Create a refusal script. Stokes says her mother would feel rude

hanging up on a caller, even if she suspected a scam. So she and her mom created a refusal script, which provides language her mom can lean on when she needs to end a call. Says Stokes: “I told her to say, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t talk right now. I’m having tea with Officer Brady’ and then hang up.” Stokes advises that you keep the script next to your phone — or by your door, for unwanted or fishy solicitors — as reinforcement. Use a password manager. Our Lab pros love that Dashlane Premium ($9 per month for family plan, dashlane.com) offers intuitive onboarding and helpful notifications that will alert you to potential security problems. “Salt” your security questions. You might feel safer when websites require answers to security questions like ‘Name your high school mascot.’ But thanks to social media, a lot of personal info is available online. “Scammers can figure out what high school you went to because you posted about your reunion on Facebook,” says Stokes. One strategy for staying safe is “salting” — sprinkling

a little extra info into your answers to make them harder to hack. If, say, your high school mascot was a cougar, you can add a memorable word or number to your correct answer — e.g., Cougar719 or CougarDoritos (even better: CoUgarDor!t0s) —

that others won’t know. Turn on multi-factor identification. Yes, it slows things down to have to enter, say, a second code when accessing private data, but a minor inconvenience to you is a big inconvenience to scammers. Stokes agrees that what’s known as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a valuable addition to your security: “The company is going to send that code to me on a known device, and it’s just one more step. If the scammer has your phone, it’s a different story, but more often than not that’s not the case.” Check your email settings. Mark unwanted emails as spam. Strengthen your privacy options in your email security settings, and have a secondary email account to use when you need to provide an email address for transactions.

Got Scammed? It’s OK! Read This. Some people feel embarrassed that they’ve fallen for a scam, so they might be reluctant to report it. But a recent AARP study showed that what makes people vulnerable is “not any attribute of the individual who experiences a scam—not socioeconomic status, not age, not educational achievement,” says Stokes. “It’s what you’re experiencing in your life right then. You’ve lost a job. You’ve lost a spouse. You’ve been diagnosed with a serious illness. It’s in those moments that we are most susceptible to a scam.” Reporting fraud can help someone else avoid it—or even help bring scammers to justice, because the reports are aggregated and available to law enforcement agencies. If you think you or a loved one has been scammed… • File a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (tips .fbi.gov), or contact your FBI field office in person. • Report fraud to your local police or state law enforcement agency. • Contact the Federal Trade Commission through the website reportfraud.ftc.gov. • Call AARP’s Fraud Helpline at 877-908-3360. It’s free, and specialists can provide support.

On vacation, I really like to let my hair down. And by that I mean that I become a massive slob. Piles of clothes on the floor, half-drunk cups of coffee stranded in strange places, crumpled

A disclaimer: We’re not talking about my departing from a hotel room or rental house with it so completely trashed that you’d think a wayward rock band had stayed the night. I’m not leaving soggy tissues on the floor or crumpled beer cans in the toilet. Mine is the kind of mess that might telegraph Oh, the person staying in this room is…not particularly concerned with how their space looks or simply Geez, this person is a slob. At home, nothing could be further from the truth. I wouldn’t dream of going to bed with a puddle of clothes next to my bed, nor could I leave for the day with a damp towel festering on the end of it. No piles, no coffee cups. While I’m hardly going to win any housekeeping awards, I may just get top honors for “obsessing over the amount of cat hair on the stairs” or “harassing other family members to please — please?! — stop leaving wet towels on the floor.” Every morning after getting showered, dressed and

ready for the day, I head downstairs to the kitchen and living room. Before I can even tackle making the kids’ lunches or fix my cup of coffee, there are at least 15 minutes of tidying up to be done: emptying the dishwasher, corralling stray toys, rehoming the remotes, placing wadded-up clothes into the hamper. This is the stuff of quotidian life — the endless tidying, the constantly receding horizon of completing the housework that goes into having a home as neat and clutter-free as possible, which I find vital to my sense of well-being. Once everything is back in place

— or, at the very least, hidden out of sight behind a cupboard door —

I feel a distinct sense of calm. When I’m feeling stressed or anxious, the lack of such order only magnifies it: A messy home plus a messy head just doesn’t work all that well for me. Oh, how I wish I could compartmentalize it better so the two didn’t meld into one another, so going to bed with a

pile of unfolded laundry off to the side wouldn’t make me just a tiny bit twitchy. But it does. But not vacation me — vacation me doesn’t get twitchy! Vacation me cares not about clothes strewn around or dribbled between the bathroom and the bedroom, dishes languishing in the sink. Vacation me doesn’t even hang things up after wearing them. Vacation me sometimes doesn’t even unpack. No worries! It’s all good! This total relinquishment of the rules I live by at home actually makes a vacation that much more relaxing and distinct from my daily life. In fact, I’d argue that real vacation isn’t found only in the change of scenery and the time away from work, but also in the escape from those daily Sisyphean tasks. What an unburdening! In fact, it makes me wonder whether I’m not a true neatnik but rather just playacting at being neat, because tidiness has such a direct relationship to making me feel

organized and in control. Real clean freaks have it in their blood and bones; for them, briefly shrugging it all off wouldn’t actually provide a release, because it’s all less pressurized — it’s simply how things are done. Of course, the maddening ( but perhaps predictable) thing is that after a while the decadence of being a slob starts to wear off, and things begin to feel…slobby in a bad way. As a vacation winds down, I find myself both bummed out at having to go back to “real life” for all the usual reasons and slightly looking forward to reentering the orderly and tidy world I create at home. Oscillating bet ween the t wo extremes has got me thinking, though. With a new year underway —

and a much-delayed family vacation on the horizon — I am going to try to do things differently, both on my next getaway and in my everyday life. Perhaps I can be a bit less tightly wound and tenacious about keeping things neat at home so I can bring some of those laissez-faire vacation vibes back with me. The objective: to untether my insides from my outsides so it won’t take an empty sink or a loaded dishwasher for me to feel at peace. Closing the gap between the two versions of me could be a win-win; I am fairly certain that my family will appreciate the downshift. And if these efforts at change simply don’t work — old dog, new tricks —

I can always revert to my Jekyll-andHyde home-vs.-away approach and set a new goal: Plan more vacations!

After splitting with her husband, whom she was with for 18 years, Alyssa Dineen reentered a world she hadn’t thought about in nearly two decades — the world of dating. This time around, the process was decidedly digital. “Everyone who is new to online dating feels really intimidated,” says Alyssa. “I was terrified.” A friend helped her choose photos and set her up on a dating app; then the messages from interested singles started coming in. Not every date was a success: Alyssa endured rendezvous with men who had clearly lied about their age or relationship status. Some sent explicit photos. “One guy spilled food on his shirt, disappeared into the bathroom for a while, then spent the rest of the date talking about the stain,” says Alyssa. The keys, she discovered, are an open mind, persistence and a sense of humor. After two years and close to 100 dates, she found love. Here, her top tips on putting your best self forward. Polish your profile. Craft your bio in a way that is eyecatching, authentic and fun. Be specific (instead of saying you like to read, list the last three books you read), show vulnerability (Do you cry at Hallmark commercials? Say so!) and share unusual interests. Alyssa’s triedand-true list of photos to include: a headshot, a photo of you engaged in a hobby, a social shot such as you at dinner, a full-body photo and a slightly sexy shot. “No one wants to see a picture of your cat or the last sunset pic you took,” she says.

There’s no magic message that will summon your soul mate. The key is to convey curiosity and attention. Resist the urge to message too many people at once. stay focused on making good conversation. Then just start asking questions — and expect them in return. Look beyond your “type.” “The boxes we checked when we were younger don’t necessarily serve us now,” says Alyssa. Make a list of specific qualities you’re looking for in a partner, but keep an open mind aside from that. Restrictions and prejudgments can sabotage a relationship before you’re out of the gate. “When I started dating with this focus, I met people who were much better for me and eventually found my perfect match,” Alyssa says.

“So much of our energy is spent chasing things we think will make us happy,” says Amy Johnson, Ph.D., author of The Little Book of Big Change. “The next vacation, losing a few pounds — they never lead to lasting happiness.” Teaching a niece how to read, having adventures with friends, working in a garden — intangibles like these give us real warm fuzzies. TRACKING WHO DISAPPOINTS YOU

We all remember who didn’t come to our party. “This ‘injustice collecting’ causes us to see the glass as half empty versus half full,” says Renee Exelbert, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and a New York University adjunct professor. “Instead, embrace gratitude for those who do show up.” CONSTANTLY CHECKING YOUR PHONE

Put your smartphone facedown when you’re with loved ones. “We simply can’t focus after so much online time; it shortens our attention span,” says Whatley. Try practicing being where you actually are.

If you start another episode of Squid Game at 1 a.m. with a hectic morning to come, you’re engaging in what sleep experts call “revenge bedtime procrastination.” People who delay bedtime know it will lead to negative consequences but do it anyway, says Michelle Drerup, Psy.D., a sleep medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. Drerup says she’s had an influx of patients who fail to go to sleep at a healthy hour despite facing zero barriers to doing so. Sound familiar? Try these techniques: 1 Rethink your schedule: Your late-night habits may be fueled by not having enough free time. Take a hard look at your day to work in “me time” long before bed. 2 Set a recurring a.m. alarm: Rather than prioritizing a certain bedtime, focus on waking up at the same time every day so your body’s internal circadian clock will naturally create sleepy feelings at night. 3 Turn off autoplay: Letting go of TV in bed is hard to do, but disabling the autoplay function on Netflix or Hulu can help. 4 Block yourself: A browser extension (such as RescueTime) or an app (like Freedom) can physically kick you off social media feeds or lock you out of your inbox at a certain time. — Erica Sweeney

But it’s time to let other people pick up the slack. “We go through life as if we’re responsible for every outcome we experience,” Johnson says. “We fail to recognize just how much happens effortlessly. Seeing what is working through us, for us, without effort needed, is a giant relief.” Allowing others to shoulder some of the burden will lower your stress, and you may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome — even if it isn’t perfect. HOW TO QUIT OVERTHINKING Thousands of years ago, the practice of turning stuff over in our minds (also called rumination) was wired into our brains to keep us from repeating dangerous mistakes, says psychiatrist Mimi Winsberg, M.D. Now, with fewer minute-to-minute risks, overthinking can lead to hours of agonizing over mundane things. The trick for stopping this is to be compassionate with yourself. Start to notice when you are having these worried thoughts, says Adrienne Meier, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist based in California. Then use these tips to proactively leave them behind: 1 Do a reality check: Acknowledge when you’re obsessing about something and ask yourself: Can it be changed? Is this a problem that needs to be solved right now? If not, try to set the issue aside for the moment. 2 Distract yourself: Watch a movie or play a game. “We can’t focus well on two things at once, so keeping our brains busy helps us stop ruminating,” Meier says. 3 Set a timer: Allow five minutes to edit an email instead of tweaking it for 30. 4 Recognize when a pro could help: Self-help may not be enough if your overthinking is part of clinical depression or anxiety, says Dr. Winsberg.

Up to 30% of people chew on their nails, and this habit can lead to a slew of health issues. The most common problem nail biters face is an infection caused by oral bacteria they introduce to sensitive skin around the nail bed, says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a dermatologist at Mount Sinai Hospital. Biting your nails may also cause damage to your teeth and to your jaw alignment over time, he adds. Experts say the behavior is often triggered by stress, anxiety or boredom, and research suggests that it may also be genetic. To kick the habit, most people start by applying a foul-tasting lacquer (such as Orly No Bite) to deter themselves, but these strategies can also help:

When changing into workout gear and cueing up an exercise video seems unappealing, try going for a walk. Both exercise and being outdoors have been known to lower blood pressure and improve mood, Dr. Smith says. And taking a moderately intense walk is just as effective as running for reducing your risk of hypertension and high cholesterol, according to a study in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. 5

1 Make crunchy bean croutons. Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D.N., author of The Superfood Swap, suggests this: Toss 1 can rinsed chickpeas with 1 Tbsp olive oil and seasonings; roast at 400°F for 40 min. (shake every 10 min.) — and voilà!

PROBLEM:

I need a post-workout drink that replenishes electrolytes but isn’t as sugary as a sports drink. : Try this homemade lemonade — it’s rich in electrolytes and has no added sugar. “Electrolytes

are minerals that help move water into your cells for better hydration,” explains Blatner, who is based in Chicago. Commercial electrolyte drinks use a basic formula: water + electrolytes (usually sodium) + sugar. But you can make your own using natural electrolyte and sugar sources and get the same effect, she says. Try it: Zest 1 whole lemon (save the zest to season fish, chicken or vegetables), then cut it in half and remove the seeds. Slice off the rest of the peel, leaving as much of the pith (the white stuff) intact as possible. In a blender, blend with 8 oz coconut water (which has natural sugar and electrolytes such as potassium). Pour into a glass, sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt (it contains sodium, the main electrolyte we lose in sweat), stir and sip!

Hack your 2 meat. Replace half of your burger meat with mashed pinto beans, or make chickpeas and lentils the stars of your next Taco Tuesday or Meatball Monday.

Build a lunch 3 bowl. Use beanbased rice as your base (buy on Amazon or search online to find popular brands near you). Top with plenty of veggies, a drizzle of your favorite dressing or even another protein.

Q: I’m bored with my stir-fry. Can you help? These wrinkly nuts are a strong source of cognitively protective compounds such as alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and polyphenols, both of which reduce inflammation to support brain function.

Carrots contain beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A. “Research indicates that vitamin A can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, as well as help prevent dryness and enhance night vision,” Fischer says.

Red vino contains an antioxidant called resveratrol, which may help lower blood pressure (drink it in moderation, of course).

The antioxidant lycopene has shown the potential to benefit heart health by improving cholesterol levels and reducing stroke risk. Cook tomatoes in extra virgin olive oil to increase lycopene absorption.

“If your kidneys are healthy, kidney beans can help keep them that way,” Fischer says. Their soluble fiber promotes stable blood sugar and helps lower “bad” LDL cholesterol. But people with kidney disease should limit their intake, as the potassium and phosphorus can tax weak kidneys.

Fiber Gets a Much-Needed Rebrand For years, fiber’s claim to fame has been as a solution for staying regular. But it’s much more than that, and it deserves a place on your plate. Check out these five fantastic fiber functions:

eeds friendly bacteria. Many types of fiber are prebiotic, meaning they act as food for beneficial gut bugs, a.k.a. probiotics. This helps with digestion, immunity and more.

ncreases longevity. Regularly eating fiberrich cereals and whole grains may reduce your risk of death from cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases by 17% to 19%, according to a Harvard Medical School study.

Orange-Cucumber Relish In bowl, whisk together 2 Tbsp each lime juice and olive oil, 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger and 1 tsp honey; stir in 2 scallions and 1 small jalapeño (all thinly sliced). Charred Bittersweet Blast Broil slices of Cara Cara orange until charred. Place 1 broiled orange slice in mixing glass. Add 1 oz sweet vermouth and gently muddle. BLOOD ORANGE Its stunning hue comes from the pigment anthocyanin, which helps fight inflammation. Toss segments into salads or squeeze juice into marinades for a hit of berrylike flavor.

Honey-Broiled Orange Toast Remove peel and pith of 2 oranges (blood orange and tangerine) and cut ¼ in. thick; arrange on baking sheet rubbed with olive oil. Drizzle with 1 Tbsp honey and broil until beginning to char, 4 to 8 min. Whip ½ cup ricotta in mini food processor. Spread on 4 thick slices of toast. 1. Heat oven to 375°F. Butter angel food cake pan. In medium bowl, whisk together 21⁄2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp baking soda and 1⁄2 tsp kosher salt. 2. A: I generally prefer to use a toaster oven or the stovetop, both of which help preserve—and sometimes even accentuate—the texture of foods. Those methods take longer than using a microwave, but they can heat more gently, and the stovetop offers more room for adjustment. For example, I sometimes like to add liquid to pasta to make it creamy or oil to protein or vegetables for more flavor and sometimes crispness. Plus, the microwave can easily overcook or dry out some foods. Air fryers work for reheating too, but because they’re usually very powerful, I recommend using a lower temp than you’re used to for air-frying to avoid burning the exterior before the interior is heated. Below is an overview of my preferred ways to reheat food, how each works and some best practices.

23⁄4 cups all-purpose flour 1⁄2 tsp baking powder 1⁄4 tsp kosher salt 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temp 3⁄4 cup sugar 1 large egg 11⁄2 tsp pure vanilla extract Royal Icing (recipe at right) Luster dust and vodka, for decorating 1. In large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. 2. In second large bowl, using electric mixer on high, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 min. Beat in egg, then vanilla. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add flour mixture, mixing just until incorporated. 3. Shape dough into 2 disks and roll each between 2 sheets of waxed paper to 1⁄8 in. thick. Chill until firm, 30 min. in refrigerator or 15 min. in freezer. 4. Heat oven to 350°F. LIMIT COLD EXPOSURE. Even if they have a thick winter coat, pets can still get hypothermia if they’re outside too long. Keep outdoor time short when temperatures get below freezing. Extremities like noses, tail and ear tips and paws are all susceptible to frostbite, warns veterinary dermatologist Christine Cain, D.V.M., of PennVet. Signs that your dog needs to come inside include whining, shivering, hiding and lethargy. If your pet’s skin changes color or is cold or hard to the touch, seek medical attention immediately. And when you warm up your car, don’t forget to check wheel wells and under the hood — cats and wild animals may seek shelter there to avoid the cold.

PROTECT THEIR PAWS. Snow and ice, road salt and chemical ice-melting agents can irritate dogs’ paw pads and the delicate skin in between, explains Heidi Cooley, D.V.M., of Banfield Pet Hospital. Signs of irritation include lifting up paws higher than is typical or refusing to walk, unusually rough or cracked paw pads, redness, bleeding and oozing. If your dog will wear them, booties can help protect their sensitive feet. If not, paw balm can help form a barrier and heal dry, cracked pads. If it’s long, trimming the fur between their pads can help reduce the potentially painful collection of snow or ice there. When your pet comes inside, wipe their feet with a damp cloth to reduce irritation and keep them from licking off toxic salt or de-icing chemicals.

KEEP THEM AWAY FROM ANTIFREEZE. In addition to toxic road salt and de-icing agents, vehicle antifreeze is extremely poisonous to animals. If ingested, it may cause severe suddenonset kidney failure that can be fatal, Cooley notes. Keep antifreeze on a high shelf where pets can’t get to it, and if you suspect that yours may have ingested some, take them to the vet immediately or call the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 (a $65 fee applies).

Winter Woes

Just like ours, pets’ skin can get irritated and itchy in the winter because of drier indoor air, and allergies to dust mites or mold may flare up as well, says Cain. Those can all cause itchiness of the face, paws, ears, armpits or groin and can lead to secondary skin infections that show up as red skin, hair loss or areas that look crusty or pimply. Head shaking, scratching, redness, discharge or smelly ears may indicate an infection too. Cain recommends bathing your pet more often than usual with a gentle moisturizing shampoo to help soothe their dry or itchy skin or talking to your vet about supplements like fish oil capsules. As allergies can be environmental or food-based, get a workup from your vet to determine the best course of treatment. Remember to use flea and tick prevention year-round as well, since flea infestations can occur indoors at any time of year.
