EDITOR'S NOTE

Behind-the-scenes M

ost letters that end up being published are approved — pending space considerations — as soon as I get to read them. They then go to an editor who corrects any mistakes in grammar and punctuation, and are placed in a folder, waiting their turn to be laid out on an actual newspaper page. If we have already filled our quota for letters for the upcoming week, we save them for the following weekly issue. Most of these letters are published within two weeks of our receiving them. Like everything else in the paper, letters are still carefully reviewed before publication by copyeditors, proofreaders and our team. The majority of letters that we don’t use at all are also decided on right away. This could be for a wide variety of reasons, such as too many similar letters on the same topic, or the letter doesn’t meet our standards. Then there are what I refer to as the “borderline letters.” While they have some redeeming factor, such as addressing an important topic, they raise some concerns either regarding content or the tone of the letter. Sometimes we have already “closed” a thread, and we discuss whether the points raised in the letter are valid enough that we should re-open it. These letters are circulated among members of our editorial board for review and discussion. Oftentimes a decision is reached after a round of emails, sometimes we actually have an in-person meeting about them.

This is where Pilar serves as an editor in-chief of Martha Stewart Living in 2013

Few readers would imagine how much consideration we give the letters we reject, let alone those we do publish! There is another category of letters that we mark “under consideration.” While they meet our standards, at first glance they don’t seem all that compelling. We wait to see what else we have that particular week, consider how much space we have, and then decide.

BRUSH ARTS

style

Sometimes, it’s hard to imagine that you can learn to do your own makeup just as well as any professional makeup artist. This process is quite difficult and it requires a lot of different tools and products. But once you learn even the most basic makeup skills, you will realize that the whole thing is not impossible to do. The first step is to get the necessary brushes.

13

APRIL 2020

STYLE

What materials to choose

There are natural and synthetic makeup brushes. The natural ones are made of sable, squirrel, and goat wool. These brushes are more expensive, they feel better, and they are great for shading. Use natural brushes for shades, powder, dry blush, and bronzers. As for synthetic brushes, they are usually made of nylon and polyester. Synthetic brushes are not as soft as natural ones. They are more affordable, so they can be replaced more often. Thanks to their synthetic materials, they are easier to shape. Use synthetic brushes for beauty products with a liquid, creamy, or gel-like texture. For example, for foundations, creamy blush, and highlighters.

For foundation

For concealer

For blush

For highlighter

Use big slanted synthetic brushes to apply foundation. Thanks to the shape, they will allow you to apply creamy substances in thin layers, hiding the imperfections.

If you use dry blush, choose natural brushes. The brush has to be rounded, soft, and fluffy.

14

APRIL 2020

The double brush in the picture above is used for concealer and can also be used for the foundation. Because it’s supposed to be used with creamy and liquid substances, this brush has to be synthetic. It’s flat with a rounded tip.

This is another natural brush, it’s flat and mediumsized. Use thin brushes for applying blush and dry highlighters.

STYLE

For powder

Powder brushes are the biggest and they should be made of natural materials. They are good for all sorts of powders. You can also use these brushes for dry blush, highlighters, and bronzers.

What products to choose

Micellar water is a great tool for washing brushes but it’s also pretty expensive. You can also use cleansing foam and it doesn’t have to be very expensive. If you want to make sure all the bacteria is gone, use a 9% vinegar and water solution. To make it, mix water and vinegar in a 1:2 proportion. You can also use regular anti-bacterial liquid soap. You can also use mild hair shampoo, like one for children. To clean the brushes, you can also use a dish detergent mixed with olive oil. To make the solution, mix the detergent and the oil in a 2:1 proportion.

For shades

Natural brushes for eyeshadow are great for dry beauty products for eyes. They are not good for drawing small details. Use sharper brushes for this purpose.

For eyeliner

Synthetic slanted brushes are good for eyeliners. This brush has longer fibers than an eyebrow brush.

16

APRIL 2020

How to wash the brushes

The first thing you need to know is that makeup brushes should be washed at least once a week. Otherwise, there might be dangerous bacteria on them. In order to wash makeup brushes, follow these general recommendations. Wet the brush with water. Take the product you’re going to use to wash the brushes and put it on a special brush for washing the brushes, or simply on your palm. Dip the brush in the washing product, and rotate it to make sure the product gets in between the fibers. After that, wash the brush in cold, clean water. Keep the metal part and the handle from getting wet. If needed, repeat the process. Remove the excess water, shape the brushes correctly, and dry them in a horizontal position.

For eyebrows

This is another synthetic slanted brush with shorter fibers. Use it to shape the eyebrows and add finishing touches.

STYLE

PONYTAILS ON!

A tall ponytail is a simple and stylish hairdo that will be suitable for creating any type of look, whether it be everyday, festive or official.

18

APRIL 2020

STYLE

Variant #1

1. Make a regular ponytail, and secure it with an elastic band. 2. Take 6-8 bobby pins and fasten them perpendicular to the elastic band around the ponytail. 3. Separate a hair strand from the ponytail. 4. Wrap it around the ponytail in the place where the elastic band is. Make sure the strand conceals the bobby pins completely. 5. Secure the end of the strand behind the ponytail with the help of another bobby pin. 6. Enjoy your new hairdo.

Variant #2

1. Collect the upper third of your hair, make a ponytail, and secure it with an elastic band. 2. Lower the elastic 1 inch to 1.5 inches down, and let the ponytail through the upper part. 3. Separate the ponytail from the rest of your hair and flip it forward toward the forehead. 4. Tie the remaining two-thirds of the hair into another ponytail and secure with an elastic band closer to the base of the first ponytail. 5. Flip the first ponytail back. 6. Push the second ponytail through it. 7. Tighten the first elastic band to secure the hairdo and create volume. 8. Cover the first ponytail with the second one, and neatly straighten the strands.

20

APRIL 2020

Variant #3

1. Collect the top third of your hair, tie it into a ponytail, and secure it with an elastic band. 2. Split the remaining two-thirds into 2 big strands. 3. Bring them together over the first ponytail, tie them into the second ponytail, and secure them with an elastic band. 4. Tighten the second elastic band to fix the hairdo and create volume.

home SHOPPING LISTS Going shopping without being organized beforehand can cause you to wander from aisle to aisle and lose precious time. Plus, when you finish and find yourself in front of the cashier, you’ll see that you spent more than you should have. Having a shopping list with you can help you save time, money, and nerves.

23

APRIL 2020

HOME 1. Find out what you need.

Searching all around the house for what you’re missing and what you need to buy is time-consuming and exhausting. That’s why keeping a primary list on the fridge will save you a lot of time. You can’t make a shopping list in just 5 minutes, but if you make a primary one, it could save you a lot of trouble. Here’s how to get one started: Put a list on the fridge where you can write down what you are out of. Remind everyone that if they don’t put the item on the list, it won’t be bought. This will get everyone involved and give you a better chance of getting everything you need when it’s time to shop. This list can include more than just food. You can also write down other things you need in your home. Write the item down, even when you’re just running low.

2. Clean out your kitchen.

Before you write your list, clean out your fridge and pantry. Throw out anything that’s spoiled or that has passed its expiration date. This will help you to easily see what you’re missing, and you’ll have room for new groceries when you get back.

3. Organize your list according to your coupons.

Even though it may seem like a lot of work, using coupons is a great way to save some money. And when you’re creating your list, you might want to mark or write the items in a separate list that you plan to use the discounts for. Find coupons on flyers, in newspapers, or simply check to see if they’re at store entrances. Don’t let coupons trick you into buying unnecessary things. Only use coupons for the items you already planned to buy.

24

APRIL 2020

4. Write the list according to store aisle.

To save time and energy when shopping, and also not to overlook an item from your list, write down the items you need under the aisle category. Below is an example of how to organize your list. Frozen food section: frozen peas, ice cream, pizza, etc. Veggies: cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Beauty supplies: face creams, shampoo, etc.

5. Consider visiting more stores.

Other stores may have different types of discounts. So let’s say one store has a discount on meat and another one on beauty supplies. It’s worth the trip if it’s on your way. Just remember to update your grocery list by adding a category for the different stores.

PESTS AWAY

There are many products available in stores for getting rid of cockroaches, but they may be toxic for your children, your pets, and for you. However, there are also natural remedies that can help you keep these insects away from your home without harming your family or the environment.

26

APRIL 2020

HOME 1. Vinegar Procedure: Mix water and vinegar in equal quantities. Dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe all bathroom surfaces, floors, bathtub, door frames, and windows. Vinegar is a disinfectant that gets rid of any smell that can attract cockroaches but, at the same time, its own smell will keep these insects away from any entryways to your home.

2. Bay leaves and garlic Procedure: Place some laurel leaves or cloves of garlic in any place in your house where there might be insects. Rosemary may also be useful. Laurel leaves and garlic are elements that we all have at home and that come in handy to repel any unwanted visitors.

28

APRIL 2020

HOME 3. Lavender and catmint Procedure: It’s a good idea to have them at home. If you live in an apartment, you can place these plants on the balcony or in flowerpots close to those places where insects can be found. Lavender and catmint are powerful repellents that are useful not only against cockroaches but also against mosquitoes.

4. Baking soda and sugar Procedure: A great way to get rid of cockroaches is to mix baking soda and sugar in equal quantities and to place this mixture behind the furniture. Don’t forget to put it behind the fridge and oven, since these insects usually hide near any sources of heat.

5. Orange oil Procedure: If you live in a house and have lots of plants, then you should prepare a mixture combining 3 tablespoons of liquid soap, 1 oz (30 ml) of orange oil, and 135 oz (4 L) of water. Spray the mixture onto the plants to chase cockroaches and ants away.

29

APRIL 2020

Suggestions Try to find their hiding spots. During the day they are usually in dark and damp places, which are difficult to reach. They may also be found in drainpipes, basements, and under wooden floors. Don’t leave any food or food scraps lying around. Try to keep your house clean, especially your kitchen. Take out the garbage every day. If you’re going on vacation, spend some time cleaning your house thoroughly and, if possible, keep the floors free from any objects.

health CHOOSE AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH

Research shows that electric toothbrushes are 21% better at removing plaque and 11% more likely to prevent gum disease. Therefore, buying this device is considered a good investment in the health of your teeth. And though the initial investment cost can be daunting, it’s still a good way to save money since several people can use one toothbrush with their personal nozzles.

31

APRIL 2020

HEALTH 1. Types of electric toothbrushes Mechanical: The cleansing head of such brushes is driven by a built-in motor. Thanks to this, the brush rotates, pulsates, reciprocates, and cleans the surface of the teeth. Sonic: The oscillation of the brush comes from generating sound waves. They create a special range of movement with the bristles and form a homogeneous mixture of water, paste, and air inside the oral cavity. This mixture circulates and the flow of liquid in the mouth gets to the hard-to-reach areas where a lot of plaque tends to accumulate. Ultrasonic: It’s the most powerful type of brush that’s based in ultrasonic technology. Due to the increased vibration, these brushes “accelerate” to 2.4 million movements per minute. If we compare these to sonic brushes, the speed of their vibration fluctuates between 9,000 and 40,000 movements per minute. The high frequency allows you to effectively destroy plaque without mechanical impact. All you need to do is put the brush on your teeth.

4. Cleaning modes All electric toothbrushes have at least one cleansing mode. It’s called “clean” or “daily clean,” and it’s set by default. Such a mode is suitable for almost everyone. Different models can have additional cleansing modes, which can include: “whitening” “gum care” “for sensitive teeth” “deep cleaning” “tongue cleaning” Each mode differs in power and cleaning time. Thus, the modes for deep cleaning and whitening typically last for 3 minutes instead of the usual 2, while the modes for sensitive teeth and gum care require less bristle movement for more gentle cleaning.

2. The movement of the head Electric toothbrushes combine one or several types of movements. Rotation: A small round head quickly rotates and makes many circular movements per minute. Vibrations: The head vibrates, creating pulsations and the extra movement of bristles. Oscillations: The head makes sweeping movements. It moves bristles from one side to the other or rotates, changing its direction after every spin. Multidirectional: The head quickly moves from side to side, then up and down. There is no convincing data that some movement types are better than others. However, research that compared the efficiency of regular toothbrushes and electric ones proved that rotation oscillation models are the best pick.

5. Source of power Electric toothbrushes are either batterypowered or work from a built-in battery. As a rule, battery-powered models cost less but you’ll have to spend money on replaceable batteries. However, you can save some cash here as well if you buy rechargeable batteries and charge them periodically. Models with built-in batteries come together with a charger. Make sure to take note of how long the battery lasts and how often you’ll need to charge it before making the purchase.

32

APRIL 2020

3. Heads Big manufacturers offer a wide range of changeable heads. For example, one type can be good for regular tooth brushing, and the other one, for whitening and improving the condition of the gums. You can always use the same head or change it according to your current needs. Also, heads are divided according to the stiffness of the bristles. It can be very soft, medium-hard, and hard. Experts recommend using a toothbrush with soft bristles. Harder bristles can damage the enamel on the teeth. Moreover, it’s recommended to change the head of the brush every 3 months for optimal oral hygiene. That’s why you need to take into account not only the type of the head but also its cost when choosing the brush. In order to save some money, opt for a model with inexpensive removable heads and buy them in jumbo packs.

6. Additional functions The timer helps you to brush your teeth for 2 minutes precisely — that’s the time dentists recommend one should spend brushing their teeth. Some toothbrushes automatically stop after 2 minutes, while others start to vibrate when the timer stops. The pressure sensor lets you know if you press too hard. Hard pressing can harm tooth enamel. The sensor warns you to weaken it with the help of light or sound signals. Indicator bristles help you to replace the brush’s head in time. When a replacement is required, the bristles will slowly fade to white, losing their initial color. Synchronization with a smartphone lets you control the cleaning process and gives you live instructions for better results.

WHAT TO

WEAR

Most women are familiar with the situation of opening a closet full of clothes only to realize they have nothing to put on. Creating a capsule wardrobe can help greatly with this all too common scenario. A capsule wardrobe is a set of clothes with pieces that are interchangeable with each other by style and color. Normally, such a wardrobe consists of 512 items, excluding footwear and accessories. With a wardrobe like this, you can create many different combinations with a minimal number of items.

Making up a capsule wardrobe, step #1

There’s no universal capsule wardrobe that will suit everyone. It may consist of one set for a young mother and a different set for an office worker — and a third for vacation. The list of things is compiled individually, depending on one’s lifestyle, the specific outdoor climate of where they live, their dress code at work, and personal preferences.

Step #2

Opt for one key item when you start to collect your capsule wardrobe, whether it be a formal suit or a blazer, trousers, or a skirt. It’s this one item that will form the style and color palette of your future wardrobe. In our case, the key item that will be the center of the wardrobe is a yellow pantsuit.

First, draw a circle diagram before creating the capsule wardrobe and split it into different life sphere sectors. Thanks to this, you’ll see what spheres prevail in your life and what pieces you should start with. For example, if you’re a mother on maternity leave, the biggest sector of your diagram will be occupied by family and walks with the kids. It means that most of the clothes in your wardrobe should be casual and suitable for long walks. If you’re an office worker, the basics of your wardrobe should consist of an official style and formal pieces.

Step #3

Choose several top and bottom pieces, all matching the key item. In order to make the capsule wardrobe work, it should contain 5+ tops and 2 to 3 bottoms, and all of them should be interchangeable both by style and color. We created a capsule wardrobe for an employee involved in the creative sphere or with a non-strict dress-code that contains looks for the office, business meetings, café visits, shopping trips, and walks with friends and family. Our capsule wardrobe contains 12 items. 9 of them are tops: a yellow blazer, a black leather jacket, a blue blazer, a basic white piece, black and purple turtlenecks, a white blouse, a Tshirt with a print, and a sweatshirt. It also contains 3 bottom pieces, each of which matches the majority of the tops.

37

APRIL 2020

Step #4

Choose one or several pairs of shoes that fit all the looks you’ve created.

Mix the capsule wardrobe items in various combinations and create different looks. Here are some options that can be created based on the wardrobe in our examples above: 1–3. A yellow suit (blazer + trousers) + any of the 3 turtlenecks 4. A yellow suit + a white blouse 5. A yellow suit + a T-shirt with a print 6 and 7. A yellow blazer + a white (or black) turtleneck + a pleated skirt 8 and 9. A blue blazer + a white (or black) turtleneck + a pleated skirt 10. A T-shirt with a print + black trousers + a leather jacket 11–13. A yellow blazer + black trousers + any of the 3 turtlenecks 14–16. A blue blazer + any of the 3 turtlenecks or a white blouse + black trousers 17. A blue blazer + the sweatshirt with a parrot on it + yellow trousers 18–20. A black leather jacket + any of the turtlenecks + a pleated skirt

Step #5

Based on the clothing combinations you created, choose any accessories (bags, gloves, belts, scarves, and jewelry) that will match your wardrobe. Your capsule wardrobe is ready!

SWEET MARSHMALLOWS A dessert is usually something that is very hard to resist, even more so if it has marshmallows as the main ingredient. These spongy treats are versatile when it comes to making pastries and sweets. They are ideal for making a quick treat in the afternoon or for inviting your friends to taste a new snack that will surprise them.

41

FOOD

Cookie and marshmallow sandwiches

Puffed rice and marshmallow bars

Stuffed marshmallow balls

Ingredients 6 large cookies (they can be oatmeal or butter) 3 large marshmallows 3 tbsp of chocolate-hazelnut spread (or dulce de leche)

Ingredients 1 tbsp of butter 1 cup mini marshmallows 1 tsp of red food coloring 1 tsp of green food coloring 2-3 cups of puffed rice Raisins or chocolate chips

Ingredients 20-30 mini marshmallows 9 ounces (250 grams) of puff pastry dough 3 ounces (75 grams) of cocoa powder

1. Place the marshmallows on a wooden skewer. 2. Grill them above the opening of a lit toaster or on the stove burner, just make sure they are over a low and indirect heat source so as not to burn them. Rotate them so that you cook the entire surface. 3. Spread chocolate-hazelnut cream or dulce de leche on the cookies, whichever you prefer. Then, make a sandwich by “trapping” a roasted marshmallow between 2 cookies.

1. In a saucepan, melt the butter. Add the marshmallows and pour in the green food coloring. 2. Stir well until a semi-liquid consistency is obtained. Pour in the puffed rice and mix. Repeat the first point using the red food coloring, then stir in the puffed rice. 3. Once all the green ingredients have been mixed together properly, put them in a removable mold. Before adding them, put another smaller circular mold inside the larger mold to create a thin layer. 4. Place the red mixture in the center and then remove the molds. Flatten it out to fill the space. 5. Decorate the dessert with some raisins, or you can use chocolate chips. Cut into triangles to give it the appearance of sliced watermelon.

1. Cut the dough into mediumsized circles. Place some mini marshmallows inside. Form a little ball with your hands. 2. Place the filled balls in a plastic Ziploc bag. 3. Pour the cocoa over them. Close the bag and mix until the powder has adhered to all the balls. 4. Place them in a silicone mold and bake them in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 15 minutes. 5. Allow them to cool for a few minutes before eating.

42

APRIL 2020

Edible roses for decoration Ingredients 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of marshmallows (about 1 cup) 5 ounces (150 grams) of powdered sugar (approximately ¾ cup) 1 tsp of red food coloring 1. Place the marshmallows in a deep glass bowl with a splash of water. Microwave them for 1 minute. Then, sprinkle the powdered sugar over them. Stir until you obtain a doughy consistency, without lumps. 2. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Then remove the contents from the bowl and place them on a floured flat surface. Pour the red coloring over the dough. Mix with your hands until the color is evenly incorporated. 3. Flatten the dough for a few minutes, until a thin layer is formed. 4. With the help of a round cutter, make several cuts on the dough. You can cut 2 or 3 different sizes. 5. Place the cut dough on top of each other. Fold them with a little water between each fold. Roll them up delicately. 6. Separate the leaves with your fingers, so that it looks like an open rose. You can use them to decorate cupcakes, ice cream, or candies.

FOOD

Marshmallow jelly Ingredients 16 fluid ounces (½ liter) of milk 8-10 large marshmallows 2 eggs Dulce de leche Fruits of your choice (for garnish) 1. In a half-filled milk container, place the marshmallows and eggs. 2. Close the container and whip it vigorously. Cook in the microwave for 1 minute. 3. Gently place it on a plate. 4. Garnish with dulce de leche or chocolate syrup and fruit of your choice.

TIPS & TRICKS

How to Read a Barcode

Barcodes have been used by humanity for several decades and are there on most items that we buy nowadays. We have already stopped paying attention to them even though we probably should. In some cases, information from a barcode can turn out to be very useful.

WHAT TYPES OF BARCODES ARE THERE There are 2 main categories of barcodes: 1D (One-Dimensional) and 2D (Two-Dimensional). One-dimensional (linear) barcodes relate to the barcodes of the first generation and code data with the help of parallel black and white stripes of various widths. The length of a 1D barcode depends on the volume of information that it contains. Two-dimensional (matrix) barcodes are the barcodes of the new generation. They encrypt data using 2D symbols and shapes and can contain more information. 2D codes are usually square in shape. The most famous of these codes is the QR code. HOW TO INTERPRET BARCODES Due to their complexity, 2D codes almost can’t be read without special equipment. The good thing is that you don’t always need a scanner for that — most mobile phones can scan and interpret QR codes. When it comes to linear barcodes, their details can be read easily. The first thing you need to find out is what type of 1D barcode you are dealing with. UPC-code It is one of the most widespread codes for labeling consumer products in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries This code can contain 12 or 6 digits.

EAN-code EAN codes are used for labeling goods all over the world, and mainly in Europe. They can contain 13 or, more rarely, 8 digits. Of course, there are several more varieties of linear barcodes but it’s either EAN or UPC codes that are normally used for retail trading. WHAT THE DIGITS ON A 13-DIGIT EAN CODE MEAN The first 2 digits of the code indicate the manufacturing country of the goods. The next 5 digits indicate the manufacturer. The second set of 5 will help you identify the product. It’s the product code provided by the manufacturer. The last digit is a check digit. It is calculated from the first 12 digits with the help of a special formula. An important note: If you decided to calculate the check digit of a barcode yourself and it doesn’t correspond to the one indicated on the barcode, it’s likely that it contains a mistake. Each country has a special department that provides codes to product manufacturers and maintains a central database. The entire EAN code system is overseen by the International Article Numbering Association based in Brussels.

WHAT THE DIGITS ON A 12-DIGIT UPC CODE MEAN The first digit in a UPC code is the symbol of the standard system of numeration which is assigned by the Uniform Code Council (UCC). It indicates the category of a product. 3 is used for indicating medical goods, 2 for indicating articles where the price varies by weight, 4 shows that a product is not a non-food item. The next 5 digits indicate the manufacturer. These numbers are also issued to the manufacturers by the Uniform Code Council. The next 5 digits on the code (from 7 to 11) are the product code that is assigned to the article by the manufacturer. The last, the 12th digit, is a check digit, just like with EAN codes. It checks that the previous 11 digits match what is entered in the UPC common database.
