EDITOR'S NOTE

Power of the color W

ell, I usually share with you my monthly letter on the first of the month (or the first Monday of the month). But last Monday, I felt compelled to give you a personal update. And I cannot thank you enough for all your heartfelt messages of kindness and encouragement. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. As I mentioned in my note last Monday, my One Little Word for 2019 is forward — as in let’s move forward! Let’s do this one thing: forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead. So, let’s do just that… It’s time to reveal January’s word for the month, as well as the color for the month. January Word of the Month Okay – I’ll preface this by saying this “word” (or phrase, as the case is this time) is controversial amongst the team here. In fact, I’m somewhat surprising them and changing things up by using this word / phrase. When I threw out this phrase as a possibility for the word of the month, the girls voted no to this idea. They didn’t think it was very compelling or motivating or exciting. But with the word (or phrase) of the month selection, I always have to keep it real with where I am in life. Have I piqued your interest yet? Here goes… The January phrase of the month is “back to basics”. And yes I agree with the team — not the most exciting set of words ever. But you know what? Sometimes we need a good reminder to not neglect the important areas of life. And I know for me personally, I let a lot of things fall by the wayside during the second half of 2018. I just didn’t have the capacity from an energy standpoint to deal with much. But January is a perfect time for a little wake up call. After all, what we do this month will set the tone for the rest of the year. So, while the topics this month might not be super glamorous, my hope is that getting “back to basics” will help us all to lay a great foundation for this year! We will be talking business, finance, home, food, and much more over the remainder of the month. So, hang with me here as we take care of business to set the right tone for 2019! When the color was announced in December, we immediately wrote a primer for you on the hue. But this month, we’d like to take the discussion deeper — how to wear it, the psychology of the color, how to incorporate it in interior design, and more . As I mentioned in December, I was initially unsure about the color choice. And I still remain undecided to be frank. I think we will all warm up to the color in spring and summer months. In the meantime, let’s learn all we can about it!

STYLE NATURAL OILS Castor oil, thanks to its ricinoleic acid and vitamin E content, can enhance eyelash growth when mixed with coconut or almond oil, according to a study. Almond oil is emollient and also contains vitamins A, B, and E, which have antioxidant and moisturizing properties to strengthen and increase eyelash growth. Olive oil is a great antioxidant and is rich in vitamin E, which can be effective for eyelash growth too. Instructions: Before going to bed, clean your face very well. Take a clean mascara brush and dip it into the oil. Bear in mind that you can only use this brush in this oil. Apply to one eye and then to the other, in the same way that you apply mascara. Repeat the process as many times as necessary, until the eyelashes are covered well with oil. Perform this procedure every night.

GREEN TEA INFUSION Green tea cleans the follicles and also has a high content of antioxidants. Instructions: Take a handful of green tea leaves and boil them in water for about 10 minutes. Let the infusion sit for 5 minutes. Soak a cotton ball and apply it to the eyelashes before you go to sleep.

VASELINE If you were looking for an inexpensive product to make your eyelashes grow longer, Vaseline might be an option as it’s popular for its moisturizing properties. Applying it to the eyelashes stimulates the hair follicles and helps them grow. Instructions: With a clean face, put Vaseline on your finger or on a makeup brush. Apply it evenly to your eyelashes.

EAT FOODS THAT STIMULATE THEIR GROWTH There are a number of foods that can stimulate eyelash growth. Foods rich in vitamins and proteins, like eggs, beans, fish, and soy. Foods rich in Omega 3, like salmon.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYELASHES Brush your eyelashes daily: The daily brushing of hair has been known to stimulate its growth according to a Spanish study. We can apply this same technique to the eyelashes. Just make sure it is a soft brush. However, the results of this method could take longer to be noticed than with the previous methods we’ve mentioned. Avoid rubbing your eyes: Rubbing your eyes frequently can loosen your eyelashes and cause them to fall out. In addition, dirt from your hands can obstruct the follicles and hinder their normal growth. Clean your eyelashes: Clean follicles are essential for eyelash growth. Take off your makeup and clean your face every day.

MAKE THEM LOOK LONGER WITH A FEW TRICKS There are a few tricks that can make your eyelashes look longer. They are only a temporary solution, but they will help you get out of a pinch, for instance if you’re about to attend an event, a party, or maybe a date. Use eyeliner to give volume to your eyelashes. Curl your eyelashes. Use false eyelashes. Apply mascara.

BONUS: CHAMOMILE TO KEEP YOUR EYELASHES HEALTHY AT ALL TIMES Chamomile is a natural and easy-to-prepare remedy, and because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it can be used to take care of healthy eyes and eyelashes. Instructions: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, place 2 bags of chamomile tea in the water. When it is ready, turn the fire off and let the infusion sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Wet a couple of cotton pads and gently rub them over your eyelashes.

SMOOTHING INGRIDIENTS

Dry hair can have multiple causes, such as chemical treatments, excessive use of flat irons or electric curling irons, and washing it more than necessary.

20

JAN/FEB 2019

STYLE ALOE VERA AND ROSE WATER Not only does aloe vera help cleanse oil residue in your hair, but it can also condition damaged and dry hair, which improves its appearance. On the other hand, rose water prevents skin dehydration, which could be beneficial for your scalp. If you want to use both ingredients at the same time, follow these steps: 1. Mix equal parts of aloe vera gel and rose water in a spray bottle. 2. Spray it on your hair every day.

BANANA AND OLIVE OIL Not only are bananas rich in minerals and antioxidants, but they also have antimicrobial properties that can help fight common hair issues, such as a dry scalp. This is how you can make a moisturizing mask with this natural ingredient: 1. Mash a ripe banana with a fork. 2. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil and mix until you get a smooth paste. 3. Apply it to your hair, from the roots to the ends. 4. Finally, wash it out with a mild shampoo.

AVOCADO, ALOE VERA, AND COCONUT OIL Avocado contains lots of mineral-rich oils that can help strengthen your hair. On the other hand, due to its molecular weight, coconut oil can penetrate your hair, reducing frizz and dryness. Get a nourishing and moisturizing mask by combining both of these ingredients together as the following steps show: 1. Mix 1 ripe avocado, 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil. 2. Apply to damp or dry hair, and leave it on for 30 minutes. 3. Rinse it out with warm water, then dry thoroughly.

NATURAL OILS Because of compounds like vitamin E, fatty acids, and various antioxidants, some natural oils could help you treat the outermost layer of your skin. Most of these would actually help you to moisturize both your hair and scalp. If you want to use these as a hair treatment, do the following: 1. Apply almond, avocado, coconut oil, or argan oil once or twice a week. Make sure you apply it evenly to all your hair. Leave it on for a few minutes, then wash it out with a mild to gentle shampoo. 2. When it comes to applying coconut oil, you can leave it on overnight. However, make sure to use a handkerchief or an old T-shirt as a pillowcase to avoid stains on your pillow. 3. Wash your hair in the morning.

RICE WATER Rice water contains vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that can help you alleviate inflammation on the scalp while, at the same time, treat dry hair. To use this rather special ingredient, you just have to follow these steps: 1. Wash 2 tablespoons of white or brown rice by placing them under the running tap to remove dirt and impurities. 2. Place the rice in a container or bowl that you can cover, and add 2 cups of clean water. Let it soak in there for at least 30 minutes. 3. Mix it well, then strain it through a sieve or a colander. Make sure to save the resulting water in a jar or bottle. You can keep it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Remember to always shake or stir before using. 4. Apply it to wet hair after rinsing out your regular shampoo, massaging from the roots to the ends.

NATURAL YOGURT AND OLIVE OIL If you’ve recently bleached or colored your hair, there are few things you can do to treat it. Follow these steps: 1. Mix a cup of plain yogurt and a tablespoon of olive oil. 2. Apply it all over your hair once a week and leave it on for 10 minutes. 3. Rinse with warm water. There is evidence that yogurt has been used in the Middle East as a treatment to promote hair growth and restoration.

WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HAIR FROM BECOMING DEHYDRATED 1. Dry it at a lower temperature. If you already struggle with dry hair, it’s recommended that you choose lower temperatures instead of higher ones when using a hair dryer or flat iron, if you use these at all. This will prevent the hair from drying out even more. 2. Include more vitamins in your diet. Vitamins A and C, biotin, and iron promote growth and healthy hair, and therefore, hydrated hair. Check with your doctor about the right amounts of vitamins you should take, or try to eat foods that are rich in these components. 3. Don’t wash it every day. Washing your hair with shampoo makes it clean, that’s true. However, in addition to removing oil and dirt, it also removes the skin’s natural sebum that keeps hair moisturized and healthy. That’s why it’s better to wash your hair twice a week using products that match your hair type. When drying, avoid rubbing it with a towel. Instead, gently massage or wrap your hair for a few minutes. 4. Protect it from environmental factors. Common things, such as sun exposure, wind, salt, and water — either from the sea or your tap, for example — can cause your hair to dry out. Therefore, it’s often recommended to use a cap, hat, or certain products to help protect your hair from these conditions.

home FIND A WARM SPOT During the winter season, many of us spend way more time at home to shelter from the cold, and we try to keep things warm and cozy.

25

JAN/FEB 2019

HOME SEAL THE WINDOW FRAMES.

✅ Examine all your windows and their frames. If you find a crack that is letting air enter, seal it with adhesive tape. ✅ You can also protect them by applying a sealant on the window frames to prevent the current from circulating and cooling your rooms.

BLOCK COLD AIR CURRENTS.

⛔ During the colder seasons, the openings under the doors of your rooms could be your worst enemy since the cold air can enter through them. ✅ To help keep your room warm, block drafts with a pad designed to be placed under closed doors. You could also roll up a blanket or towel and it will work the same way.

INSTALL THICK, DARK CURTAINS.

✅ During sunny winter days, keep your windows closed and your curtains open. This way, your rooms will be warmer for several hours before dusk, when the temperature drops. ✅ To insulate against extreme cold during the night, place one or more thick curtains on your windows and keep them closed. The interior areas will stay warm while you sleep.

LIGHT SOME CANDLES.

✅ You can light candles in whatever room you’re hanging out in. Not only will they provide a pleasant smell and a decorative touch, but they will also help to preserve a pleasant and comfortable temperature inside. It is recommended that you place them away from flammable materials, such as curtains, sheets, magazines, or books. ✅ Try to place large candles in different corners of your home. If you are reading a book in the living room, light them there and they’ll protect you from the cold. Just be sure that when you leave the house or are about to go to bed, you remember to put them out to avoid fires.

USE RUGS IN THE LIVING ROOM AND BEDROOMS.

✅ Despite the cold outside, you can keep your rooms warm by covering your floors with rugs. These work very well as thermal insulators. ✅ Choose rugs that are made of wool. In addition to giving a cozy and aesthetic touch to the interior decoration of your home, they are ideal ways to prevent your feet from feeling the cold floor.

PLACE YOUR BED AWAY FROM THE WINDOWS AND COVER YOUR MATTRESS.

⛔ Glass cools down significantly during the night, and it’s recommended that you place your bed as far away from your windows as possible to prevent your mattress from staying cold. During the day, leave the curtains open so that your mattress receives sunlight and warms up for a few hours. ✅ Another alternative to help keep your mattress at a comfortable temperature at bedtime is to use a winter mattress cover or place a thermal sleeping bag over it.

26

JAN/FEB 2019

KEEP UNUSED ROOMS CLOSED.

✅ To keep the heat inside your home and prevent it from escaping to rooms you’re not using, close the doors that lead to them. This way, you can enjoy a comfortable temperature in your living room or bedroom.

COOKING ARTS A lot of people use induction cooktops nowadays. The technology of magnetic induction is a relatively new invention, which is why there are many questions about how exactly induction cooktops work and what their advantages are.

28

JAN/FEB 2019

HOME WHAT AN INDUCTION COOKTOP IS

In induction cooktops, an electric current is used for heating. It goes through a spiral copper wire right under the burner. As a result, it makes an electromagnetic field that is the source of the heat. An ordinary induction cooktop looks like a glass stove. That’s because they are made of the same materials. But in glass stoves, the sources of heat are metal spirals and halogen lamps. Glass stoves are the same as ordinary electric stoves.

HOW THEY’RE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER STOVES

Gas and electric stoves heat the burner or the panel that transmits the heat to the pot or the frying pan. An induction cooktop heats the pot itself, and the panel remains relatively cold. As a result, the dishes and the stove itself are way easier to clean.

THE ADVANTAGES OF INDUCTION COOKTOPS

Because induction cooktops heat the dish directly, they’re faster than electric or gas stoves. For example, water boils 2 times faster. Induction cooktops are smooth like modern electric stoves. They’re always cold enough so you can clean them right after cooking. For the same reason, the risk of getting burned on this stove is very little. Once you remove the pot from the stove, the heating turns off. Electric cooktops need a lot of time to heat up and cool down, and it’s hard to adjust the temperature on gas stoves. Induction cooktops give you full control of the temperature. Another advantage is that the heat exchange stops right after you turn off the burner, so there’s almost no chance the food will get overcooked.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF INDUCTION COOKTOPS

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF INDUCTION COOKTOPS

Induction cooktops are more expensive than electric or gas stoves because it’s a relatively new technology. You will need special pots and pans for this type of cooktop. They’re supposed to be made of metal with magnetic properties, such as stainless steel or cast iron. Cooking on an induction cooktop might seem hard. The pot has to be right in the center of the burner for it to work. The pot should have a specific shape with a flat bottom. Most induction stoves don’t turn off immediately when you remove the pot or put it aside while cooking. But there might be some glitches that make the process uncomfortable. During your first tries, you might overcook your food. That’s because induction cooktops are faster than any other stove, so you might need time to get used to this faster mode of cooking. The surface of induction stoves is easily scratchable because it’s made of smooth glass. To prevent any damage, manufacturers advise using pots with flat bottoms and to not let them slide.

32

One of the advantages of an induction cooktop is that it doesn’t require a lot of care. In order to keep the cooktop clean, all you need to do is wipe it after each use until the pieces of food dry out. If you need a thorough cleaning, use a kitchen towel and a soft detergent designed for induction tops. Don’t use any abrasive sponges. When you finish cleaning, don’t forget to wash off the detergent with a wet towel and dry the surface of the cooktop.

health WOMEN USES PADS Sanitary pads are made of absorbing fabric and attach to the underwear using a sticky layer on the back and wings. The inside part of the pad is made of the material that absorbs the menstrual fluids.

35

JAN/FEB 2019

HEALTH THE ADVANTAGES OF USING SANITARY PADS

HOW TO USE PADS

1. Open the pad. 2. Remove the protective layer from the sticky part on the pad. 3. Put the pad into your underwear with the sticky side facing the fabric. Make sure they stick together — it will help you prevent leaks. 4. If you have wings on the pad, spread them, remove the protective piece from the sticky part, and wrap them around the sides of your panties.

Pads are easy to use, which is why women that have just started getting their periods prefer them. Pads are produced in a lot of different variants for different intensities of menstruation. They’re ideal for wearing overnight since tampons can only be used for 4-8 hours and menstrual cups, 8-12 hours. Using pads almost completely excludes the risk of toxic shock syndrome — a dangerous complication that happens because of a toxin buildup produced by the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Usually, the risk factors increase when you use superabsorbent tampons or menstrual cups.

HOW TO DISPOSE OF PADS

Wrap the used pad in toilet paper or a pack from a new pad and throw it into the trash. Never flush the pads down the toilet — it can lead to clogging.

THE DISADVANTAGES

HOW OFTEN YOU SHOULD REPLACE THE PADS

The outline of the pad can be seen from under the clothes, which may make women feel uncomfortable. Women can’t swim with pads and it’s hard to do certain kinds of sports. Sanitary pads can get displaced, which can lead to leaks. Pads are hard to wear with thong underwear. Disposable pads end up in dumpsters and hurt the environment.

Experts recommend replacing pads every 4-8 hours or even more often if you feel uncomfortable. Also, pads can be left on overnight in order to prevent you from having to get up in the middle of the night to change them. If you’re bleeding too much, you need superabsorbent pads.

HOW TO CHOOSE SANITARY PADS

REUSABLE PADS

Reusable pads are made of thick fabric and function like regular pads but can be washed and used again. Reusable pads are good if you suffer from skin irritation from regular pads, you want to save money, or you care a lot about the environment. Of course, it’s not very easy to wash and dry such pads, especially if you’re away from home.

There are different sizes of sanitary pads. Thin for if you’re not bleeding a lot Regular for average bleeding Superabsorbent for heavy bleeding In addition, there are pads with wings that fix the pad on the sides of the underwear to protect it from leaks and stains. You can use any pad that suits your needs.

Family Ties Although it can be very challenging, we need to learn how to deal with our difficult family members if we want to live our lives in peace.

40

JAN/FEB 2019

DON’T EXPECT THEM TO CHANGE.

Accept the person for who they are. Know that sometimes your efforts to try to make them a better person won’t be rewarded. Accept that they are unable to change, at least at that certain point in time. Just assume this is their behavior and temper your expectations.

BE DIRECT AND ASSERTIVE.

Whenever you talk to them, stay focused and be direct and assertive in everything you are saying. Make sure it is very clear. This will help you avoid getting into a fight, where both of you will become defensive.

ENCOURAGE DIFFICULT PEOPLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES.

Let them express their point of view without interfering. Try to remain neutral to what they say. Just listen and encourage them to speak. Try to arrive at a place of mutual respect. Ask them why they feel judged or why they feel they’re misunderstood.

WATCH FOR TRIGGER TOPICS.

During your conversations or even their interactions with others, try to observe and figure out what topics represent points of disagreement between you and this person. Know the topics and be aware when they are brought up. Prepare yourself beforehand for when you’ll be talking about these things so you can be direct and nonconfrontational.

SWITCH PERSPECTIVES.

In a calm moment and when you’re by yourself, try switching perspectives. You will not only start to understand the other person better, but you will also stop taking things so personally. Know that the other person had difficult experiences and that they are just expressing it in their actions. This will help you to create a greater connection with that person.

KNOW WHAT TOPICS ARE OFFLIMITS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM.

During your conversations or even their interactions with others, try to observe and figure out what topics represent points of disagreement between you and this person. Know the topics and be aware when they are brought up. Prepare yourself beforehand for when you’ll be talking about these things so you can be direct and nonconfrontational.

42

JAN/FEB 2019

SET BOUNDARIES.

Although you need to be respectful and understanding of the situation, be sure to set some boundaries. These boundaries should be set during a calm moment and never during a fight. Make sure you do it in a clear and simple language, said directly to the person in question, and repeated until they are heard.

FOCUS ON YOUR OWN WELL-BEING FIRST.

While you’re trying to be as good, respectful, and attentive as you can to make the other person happier, make sure to put your well-being first. Take some time for yourself and surround yourself with people you get along with and who can support you and make you feel happy.

USE “I” STATEMENTS.

Using “I” statements takes the blame off the person you are talking to. It will make the person less defensive. Use phrases like, “I feel threatened by comments like that.” Starting the phrase with “I” gives the feeling that what you’re talking about is more about you and less about them.

FOOD

ORANGE SPONGE CAKE Ingredients 3 ½ cups of flour without baking powder (sifted) 1 cup sugar ⅔ cup vegetable oil or melted butter 2 eggs 2 tbsp baking powder 1 cup of whole or skim milk Juice of one large orange Grated orange zest 1 tsp butter 1 pinch of salt (optional) 1. Before starting, preheat your oven to 180ºC (350ºF). 2. Spread butter on the inside of the mold you’ll be using. Doing that will prevent your cake from sticking at the end when you want to unmold it. 3. Mix the flour and baking powder in a big bowl. In this step you can add a pinch of salt if you want to. Then set it aside for later. 4. In a separate bowl, break the eggs and add sugar. Beat them until everything is well-combined. You can use a whisk or an electric mixer. 5. Add the oil, zest, and orange juice to the same bowl where you beat the eggs. Mix again until well-combined. 6. Pour the mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and add the milk gradually. Mix very well, making sure that all the lumps disappear. 7. Pour the mixture into the buttered pan and bake it in the oven for about 45 minutes. 8. Remove from oven and cover with a clean cloth. Let cool for one hour. 9. Once cold, remove the orange cake from the mold and serve.

A TASTE OF JAPAN

Baked sushi rolls are a great idea for a snack and as a main meal. To make them, you need to buy the Japanese ingredients from a specialized store or use ingredients from almost any supermarket.

49

JAN/FEB 2019

FOOD

INGREDIENTS Basic: 100 grams of Japanese mayo (or any dense type of mayo) spicy kimchi sauce (or garlic paste, or chili pepper paste) 1 tbsp of soy sauce 1 tsp of sesame oil 50 grams of tobiko or masago caviar Additional ingredients to add if you’d like: wasabi pepper onion lemon juice Tabasco sauce

Rolls and “inside-out” rolls Both traditional and baked rolls can be different types, depending on how you make them. The most popular ones are maki and uramaki. Maki are rice rolls wrapped in nori with a filling inside. Uramaki are inside-out rolls where the rice is on the outside and the filling is on the inside. You can choose the filling that you like. Just remember that seafood is great with cucumbers, avocado, and cream cheese. Spicy sauce Baked rolls are usually made with sauce on top. The recipe might be different, but it’s usually a spicy sauce you can make yourself.

1. Put all the ingredients into the bowl. 2. Mix the sauce with the silicone spatula. Rice preparation Rice for sushi and rolls has to be cooked in a special way. It shouldn’t be too soft, but should also be sticky enough to make a roll. It’s better to use special sushi rice. 1. Wash the rice with cold water. Do it as many times as necessary to remove all the starch. 2. Boil the rice in water according to the instructions on the pack. Don’t add salt. 3. Cool the rice down for 15 minutes. 4. Put the rice on a flat plate and mix it with special rice vinegar. You need 1213 grams of vinegar for every 100 grams of rice. Check to see if the sauce contains salt and sugar. If not, you need to add 0.5 tsp of sugar and 0.5 tsp of salt for every 100 grams. 5. Stir the rice until it becomes shiny. 6. While making the rolls, your hands should be wet to prevent the rice from sticking to your fingers.

FOOD INGREDIENTS Basic: rice sushi vinegar nori Filling: You can choose the ingredients you like. We used: salmon eel fried in unagi sauce crab meat masago caviar cream cheese cucumber avocado You can also use: chicken meat shrimp oysters cheese salmon caviar Tamagoyaki omelet bell pepper Shiitake mushrooms tofu lettuce For decoration and serving: white or black sesame marinated ginger soy sauce wasabi sauce

MAKI ROLLS 1. Take a bamboo mat. You can cover it in plastic wrap to make it easier to wash. 2. Put a nori sheet with the rough side up. 3. Wet your hands, take a handful of cooked rice, and put it on the sheet. 4. Spread the rice on the nori with your fingers. Leave one of the edges empty to make it easier in the next steps. The rice should be in an even thin layer, without any spaces. 5. Put the filling in the middle. Every ingredient should be placed along the entire length of the nori. 6. Wet the long (empty) edge of the nori. 7. Make a roll using the mat. 8. Be sure that the filling remains inside. 9. When the roll is done, press on the mat making the roll round, square, or any other shape. 10. Wet a sharp knife. 11. Cut the roll into 6 or 8 parts. Make the cuts in a single confident move. 12. Put the rolls into a baking mold. You can use baking paper to prevent the rolls from sticking to the surface. 13. Put the spicy sauce on every roll. 14. Bake the rolls at 350°F for 7-10 minutes. When the sauce gets a bit dark, you can remove the rolls from the oven. 15. Serve the rolls while they are still warm. Pour soy sauce in a dish, and put some wasabi and marinated ginger on the plate. Eat the rolls with chopsticks.

URAMAKI ROLLS 1. In uramaki rolls, the rice has to be on the outside and the nori should be on the inside. Begin by cutting a nori sheet in half and putting it on the mat. 2. Wet your hands, take a handful of rice and put it on the rough side of the nori. 3. Spread the rice evenly so that the nori is completely covered. 4. If you want to decorate the rolls with tobiko or masago caviar or sesame as we did, you can do that now. 5. Carefully turn the nori so that the rice is below. It’s easier to do if you cover the rice with another bamboo mat. 6. Put the filling in the middle of the nori. 7. Use the mat to make the rolls and make sure the filling stays inside. 8. You can cut the uneven ends if you wish. 9. Wet a sharp knife and cut the roll into 6 or 8 even parts. Make the cut with a quick move while keeping the roll from losing its shape. 10. Put the rolls into the baking mold. 11. Decorate every roll with the spicy sauce. 12. Bake the rolls at 350°F for 7-10 minutes. When the sauce gets a bit dark, you can remove the rolls from the oven. 13. Serve the rolls while they are still warm. Pour soy sauce in a dish, and put some wasabi and marinated ginger on the plate. Eat the rolls with chopsticks.

BANANA-OATMEAL PANCAKES (NO GLUTEN) Ingredients 2 eggs ¾ cup of gluten-free oatmeal 1 banana 1 tbsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp of honey 1 tbsp of coconut oil Optional: 1 tbsp of cocoa 1 tbsp of brown sugar

1. Crush the banana with a fork. 2. Add the vanilla extract, the oatmeal, and the 2 eggs. Mix well until you get a dough with a thick consistency. If you prefer, instead of mixing manually, you can use a blender to save time. You will also get a more uniform mixture without any lumps. 3. Heat a tablespoon of coconut oil in a non-stick frying pan. Add the pancake mix and wait until you can spot a few bubbles appearing on the side facing up. Then flip the pancake over and wait until it’s cooked. 4. Decorate your pancakes with your favorite add ons. You can use any type of nut, chopped fruit, powdered sugar, or honey. Variations If you are a chocolate lover and you have a sweet tooth, you can add a spoonful of brown sugar and a spoonful of cocoa powder to the mixture. In addition to gaining in color and aroma, your mixture will have an intense chocolate flavor.

TIPS & TRICKS

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR GLOVE SIZE The easiest way to choose gloves is to try them on before buying them. Then, you’ll be 100 % sure you’ve got the right size. But sometimes, you can’t try them on, for example, when shopping online. So, you can make a few simple measurements to determine your glove size.

MEASURE YOUR HAND Choose the hand you write with. Take a cm tape measure and put it around the hand in the widest spot. Make sure the tape is tight against your hand. Write down the result. Measure the length of your palm — from the base of your hand to the tip of your middle finger. Write down the result. Choose the biggest number of the two. For example, if the first number if 17 cm and the length of the palm is 18, take the length of your palm. FIND YOUR SIZE IN THE CHART Glove size can be shown in numbers or letters. The numbers are usually the length of the palm or the girth of your palm in inches. To find it, divide the results in cm by 2.54. You can use the chart above to find the right size. In our example, we have 18 cm, which is 7.09 inches. This would be the ladies’ size M.

CHOOSE THE LENGTH OF YOUR GLOVES There are different glove lengths. The longest — elbow and longer — are usually worn on special occasions, like at the theater or official events. Mid-sized and short gloves are used for everyday purposes.
