FACE OFF MAKEUP
style
If your face isn’t perfectly symmetrical, you can use some makeup hacks to add balance to it.
19
JAN/FEB 2020
STYLE Fix a puffy eyelid.
✅ If puffiness appears heavier only on one of your eyelids, try to apply eyeshadow to it. If you have a lighter skin tone, choose a matte beige shadow. If you have a deeper skin tone, choose taupe or brown shadow. ✅ Apply the eyeshadow in a windshield wiper motion to the crease of the eye using a small, tapered brush.
Change the shape of the eyelid.
✅ If one of your eyelids looks smaller, you can either make it look larger or minimize the larger lid. To make the smaller lid look larger, apply a shimmery cream color all over the lid. Then use a peachy nude tone pencil on the inner rim. To make the other lid look smaller, apply a matte taupe shadow to the lid. Then finish with a dark brown pencil on both inner rims.
Fill in a sparse eyebrow.
✅ If one of your eyebrows looks sparser than the other, take an eyebrow pencil and fill it in. ✅ Using tiny strokes, work into the already existing hairs of your eyebrow until it looks similar to your thicker eyebrow.
Balance out an uneven nose. ✅ If your nose looks uneven, try to blend a matte taupe contour powder more heavily on the side of your nose that is fuller. ✅ You can also add a pearly brightener down the center of the nose to create more balance.
Even out your Cupid’s bow.
✅ If you have uneven peaks on your top lip, try to make them more symmetrical either with lipstick or with lip gloss. If you use a lipstick bullet, dab the tip of your ring finger on the lipstick and form 2 rounded peaks on your upper lip using your finger. Then apply lipstick straight from the tube and cover all your lips up to the corners. If you prefer lip gloss, take a fleshy pink lip pencil, gently reshape your Cupid’s bow, and fill it in with the pencil. Then coat your lips with your lip gloss of choice.
Contour the shape of your face.
✅ If you have excess or bloated skin on your jaw or chin, apply a matte taupe shading powder that’s a couple of shades deeper than your skin tone to these areas. ✅ Use an angled powder brush to blend the powder into your skin. Tip: If you have asymmetries in the forehead area along your hairline, you can correct them in the same way.

A GIRLY CURLY HAIR Many women think that a hair straightener is a very simple device used to straighten hair and make it look silky. But in fact, this device can also curl hair, making locks different in size and volume. Important. Before using a hair straightener, we recommend that you apply a thermal protection product to your hair. While using a hair straightener, don’t keep it in the same spot for a long time, or you will damage the hair structure. Don’t use a hair straightener on wet hair, dry it before the procedure.

health TAMPONS FIGURE
Tampons are small tubes of cotton wool that you use during your period. There are 2 types of tampons — ones that come with an applicator and others without an applicator that you insert with your finger. In both cases, there’s a string at one end of the tampon, that you pull to remove it.
39
JAN/FEB 2020
HEALTH
What are the benefits of using tampons? You can’t feel them when they’re in properly. You don’t have to worry about them being visible. You can swim in them and play other sports.
How to choose tampons?
Tampons come in different “sizes” depending on their absorbency: light — small tampons with low absorbency. They are good for a low flow. regular — they are medium-sized and medium absorbency. They are good for a medium flow. super — they are a bit bigger than usual. They have the highest absorbency and are sold with the marking “super” or " super plus." They are good for a very intense, heavy flow. You should remember that toxic shock syndrome is primarily associated with using super-absorbent tampons. So it’s best to use the lowest or lightest absorbency that lasts you a few hours. In addition to the size, consider whether or not the tampons have an applicator — a small stick made of cardboard or plastic that helps to insert the tampon. Applicators can be useful for those who have difficulty inserting a tampon. A tampon without an applicator is inserted by pushing it in with a finger. For proper placement of a tampon, strictly follow the instructions on the product packaging.
What should you do if you forgot to remove a tampon?
Don’t panic. It’s not possible for a tampon to get lost inside you, and you can remove it by yourself. If you still can’t get the tampon out, go to your GP practice or nearest sexual health clinic as soon as possible. Healthcare staff will be able to remove it for you. Remember that tampon manufacturers advise that a tampon shouldn’t be left in for more than 8 hours.
What are the drawbacks?
Inserting them can be uncomfortable, especially when trying for the first time. They can sometimes irritate and dry out your mucosal lining, making it itchy and uncomfortable. The biggest downside to wearing tampons is the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS). It used to be primarily associated with using superabsorbent tampons. Often, toxic shock syndrome results from toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria, but the condition may also be caused by toxins produced by group A streptococcus (strep) bacteria. Tampons have a limit on usage time — 4 to 8 hours. Tampons inevitably end up in landfills and harm the environment.
How to dispose of tampons?
Wrap the used tampon in toilet paper and throw it into the trash bin. Never flush used tampons down the toilet. This can cause blockages.
How often do you have to change tampons?
Experts recommend changing your tampon every 4 to 8 hours, or more often if you have a heavy flow. Never leave it in longer than 8 hours. This can cause toxic shock syndrome. You can leave a tampon overnight, but you should insert it right before bed, set an alarm, and replace the tampon as soon as you get up in the morning.

APPLICABLE JOBS A CV (or resume) is the first step to getting a new job. This is the document that a future employer reads before making a decision about whether to invite a candidate to an interview or not.
44
JAN/FEB 2020
Education
What to write about in this section: Where you studied and what your profession is. Write about the years of your studies, the name of the institution, and your profession. Just like work experience, the institutions should go in reverse chronological order. Achievements in your studies. If you don’t have a lot of work experience, take more about your educational achievements. Maybe, you’ve taken part in conferences, received awards, done some studies. Courses and classes. Talk only about the ones that have to do with the job you are trying to get.
The look of your CV
1. A standard CV shouldn’t be longer than an A4-page. If you have a considerable amount of work experience, you can have 2 pages, but no more. 2. Choose readable fonts and font sizes. The best fonts for a CV are Arial, Helvetica, or Times New Roman with a font size of 10-12 for the text and 14-16 for the title. 3. Use bulleted lists for listing your skills, duties, and other things. They help structure the information in an easily readable way. 4. Read the prepared CV. After you finish writing it, put it aside for 2-3 hours. Then, take it and scan it for typos. Or have a trusted friend take a look at it.
45
JAN/FEB 2020
Work experience
What to write about in this section: The experience related to the vacancy. If you want the job of a bookkeeper, talk about your experience in this field. If you don’t have any experience, talk about your practice in college and internships you’ve had. Describe the experience in reverse chronological order — first, start with the last company you worked for and finish with the first one. The names of the positions you had and the companies you worked for. Every description has to include the position you had, the name of the company, and the time period that you worked there. Goals and achievements. Briefly talk about 5-7 main duties you had and 2-3 results of your work. Use verbs for the descriptions. Like, “did,” “finished,” “completed.” What not to write about: Why you left the job. Only talk about if you are asked at the interview. Unrelated job experience.
Skills
What to write about in this section: The skills and knowledge that has to do with the job. For example, an IT-developer can talk about the programming languages they know, a designer — about the software they can use and so on. Soft skills. There are hard skills and soft skills. The hard skills are those that help you do your actual job. The soft skills are those that make the end result even better. For example, the ability to manage a team, conduct negotiations, or plan your working day. Speaking foreign languages. Usually, people write the language they speak and there is a level of how well they do this — from A1 to C2. It couldn’t hurt to share how proficient you are at each of these things in the foreign language you speak: reading, translating text, talking, writing letters. What not to write about: Obvious things. Maybe, 10 years ago, you could say that you could use a computer but today when everybody can, this information is not necessary. Personal qualities and hobbies. There’s a separate section for this.
CV photo
A good photograph will make your CV look different from everyone else’s. But be careful and choose the right photo. Don’t use any of your photos from vacation, restaurants, walking downtown, and so on. The best option is a professionally-done photograph of you wearing your work clothes.
Useful recommendations
1. Choose a convenient file format. The universally accepted CV format is a PDF. 2. Write your contact and personal information at the beginning of the CV. You need to write your last name, first name, phone number, e-mail, and a link to your social media page (if the page is about work). If it’s your personal page, don’t link it in the CV. 3. Follow the correct order. CVs start with work experience. Then, education, skills, and personal qualities follow. 4. Prepare a CV for every position you want. Don’t just write “bookkeeper, finance manager, auditor.” An employer might think that you don’t really know which job you want. It’s better to create 3 separate CVs and describe the exact skills and work experience each of the positions requires.
Personal qualities
What to write about in this section: The qualities of your character that are related to a profession. Again, use verbs and exact phrases. Interests and personal achievements that are related to your position. For example, a journalist can talk about their personal blogs. What not to write about: Hobbies that have nothing to do with the profession. Most employers don’t care if you are interested in Italian cuisine or going to the swimming pool. And if you have some dangerous hobbies like skydiving, this might even scare some employers.
Typical mistakes
1. Don’t use the word CV in the title. An HR-employee already knows what this file is. The perfect title is the name of the position or your first and last name. 2. Make sure your e-mail address looks professional. An employer will not take an address like kitty95@gmail.com seriously. 3. Don’t write any personal information. Don’t include your home address or any details from your documents. The employer doesn’t need to know that right now.

Cheesy Potato Soup 3 cups chopped potatoes ½ cup shredded cheddar or Swiss cheese 1 tbsp of butter 1 cup minced onion 2 ½ tbsp flour 1 ½ cups whole or skimmed milk ¾ cup chicken or vegetable broth ½ cup of water ⅛ tsp ground red pepper 2 tbsp chopped chives Chopped parsley to garnish (optional) 1. Melt the butter in a medium-size pot and sauté the onion until tender or transparent. 2. Add the flour and stir actively for 30 seconds to prevent the ingredients from sticking to the pot. 3. Add the potatoes, milk, broth, and water. Stir and cook over medium heat until it boils. 4. Once the soup is boiling, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This step may take more or less time, depending on the thickness of the potato pieces. We recommend that you check the pot from time to time by sticking a knife or fork in the potatoes. 5. Add the cheese of your choice, the ground red pepper, and cook until the cheese melts. The soup should take on a creamy consistency. 6. Serve it while it’s hot, and sprinkle the chopped chives and parsley on top. You can shred more cheese on top for a sharper flavor.

TIPS & TRICKS
How to Defrost Car Windows
A lot of us have woken up to our car windows being completely frozen, making it impossible to drive. TURN THE HEATER ON. Start the car’s engine. Turn the heater on using the defroster setting. Leave it on for a while so it absorbs the moisture within the car.
PRESS THE AIR CONDITIONER BUTTON. While it may seem to contradict the previous step, activating your air conditioner will help dry the air within the car faster thanks to the coils present in your A/C system.
TURN THE AIR RECIRCULATION OFF. Make sure your air recirculation is turned off. Winter air is cold and dry and bringing it into the car will increase the absorption capacity to dry the saturated air trapped within it more efficiently.
SWEEP OFF THE SNOW. If there’s snow, make sure to sweep it off with a soft brush.
MAKE A DEFROSTING SOLUTION. Make a defrosting solution by mixing 2/3 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1/3 cup of water. Don’t use hot water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the icy windows and you will see the ice start to disappear.
SCRAPE WHILE YOU WAIT. While you’re waiting for the ice to melt and the inside of the car to warm up, you can also use a scraper and a de-icer to speed up the process.
Note: The alcohol’s freezing point is 138 degrees below freezing so you can store it in your car if needed.
