I
n her bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, cleaning consultant Marie Kondo writes, “When we really delve into the reasons why we can’t let something go, there are only two: an attachment to the past or a fear for the future.” As I write this, I am seated at my new workstation, surrounded by boxes filled with stuff—but I’m happy to report that I have two boxes less to worry about. I was so inspired by Kondo’s method that I have begun the slow, arduous process of letting go. Today: my workstation; tomorrow: my house! Letting go—whether of stuff or relationships is often painful, but it’s necessary. Kondo writes about clients who, after decluttering once and for all, were able to get rid of the barriers that were keeping good things from coming into their lives; clients who finally started the business they had long been meaning to start, or who left a highly toxic relationship, or who lost the weight they’d been wanting to lose for years. I’ve been feeling unsettled lately, and I suspect it’s partly because of the physical clutter around me. I relish the thought of a clutter-free space, and am excited to see the good things that await after my big cleanup.

Additionally, some white liquid might come out of the wound, and it might get red and itch. Such side effects are considered to be normal and don’t require any medical attention. But in order to avoid complications, it’s better to take good care of the wound from the start.

Taking care of ear, nose, eyebrow, nipple, and belly piercings
Taking care of lip and tongue piercings
Healing period: Ear: 6-8 weeks (cartilage: 2-4 months) Nose: 4-6 months Eyebrow: 6-8 weeks Belly button: up to 6 months Nipple: 3-6 months How to take care of the piercing: Touch the piercing with clean hands only. Make sure not to infect the wound. Wash the wound with chlorhexidine. Do it at least 3 times a day before the initial symptoms disappear. Wear loose clothing to avoid excess irritation of the wound. Also, it’s better not to wear hats or use earphones if you have ear piercings. What not to do: Don’t take a bath, swim in the pool or the sea, or go to a sauna. It’s better to take quick showers. After your shower, don’t forget to disinfect the wound. Don’t sunbathe. Don’t go to tanning salons or walk outside when it’s hot. Don’t use beauty products. Stay away from using anything aside from medical solutions. Don’t do difficult physical exercise. Don’t lift weights and only partake in light workouts.
Healing period: Lip: 6-8 weeks Tongue: 3-6 weeks How to take care of the piercing: Always disinfect your hands before touching the piercing. Don’t touch the wound with dirty cotton swabs, napkins, or fabrics. Use mouthwash. Make sure it doesn’t contain alcohol. Wash the mouth after every time you eat. This will prevent the food from getting stuck under the piercing. What not to do: Don’t eat hot, cold, spicy, salty, or bitter foods. It’s better to eat warm, not super solid foods. Don’t drink coffee, sparkling water, or other aggressive drinks. Don’t smoke. If you’re a smoker, avoid doing so for at least a couple of days until the bleeding stops.
16
JUNE 2017
General recommendations You can make a salt solution to wash the wound — 1/4 tsp of salt with warm water. Don’t use too much salt or it could cause skin irritation. Don’t rotate the piercing. Be extra careful at all times. Don’t remove the coagulated blood aggressively. Take a cotton swab, soak it in chlorhexidine, hold it on the wound for a few seconds, and then remove the blood. Don’t use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. They slow down the healing process, dry out the skin, and kill the good cells. Don’t drink alcohol. You can’t drink alcohol 1 day before getting pierced or 2-3 days after. Don’t drink any on the day of the procedure, not even a little bit. Wait for the wound to fully heal. It might look great on the outside but it will be bad inside. Be patient and careful throughout the entire healing process.

How to Make a Paste for Sugaring
Recommendations:
What you’ll need: baby powder or talc 2/3 glass of sugar 2 tbsp of lemon juice 2 tbsp of water small saucepan aloe vera gel wooden spatulas (optional) How to use it: 1. Pour sugar into the saucepan. Add the lemon juice and water to it. 2. Put the mixture on low heat. Keep boiling it for 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly. Don’t leave the paste unattended, otherwise, it will harden quickly. 3. Leave the mixture to cool for 10–20 minutes. It should thicken and resemble honey in its consistency. 4. While the paste is cooling down, apply some talc to the depilation zone, or use the baby powder. It will help you decrease the potential for pain and increase the efficiency of the procedure. 5. Take a spatula and apply the paste against hair growth with its help. Then remove it with a sharp movement. It’s important to do everything this way to avoid the appearance of ingrown hairs. Advice: to reduce pain after removal, press on the depilation area with your hand. 6. Apply aloe vera gel after the procedure. It will improve your skin condition.
21
The optimal hair length for depilation is 4–8 mm. Make sure to use a scrub one day prior to the sugaring procedure in order to remove the outermost layer of the epidermis. Take a hot shower before the procedure in order to steam the skin. Heat the mixture in a water bath before using it again. But don’t keep the paste for more than 2 days, otherwise, it’ll thicken. Don’t do any sugaring procedures if your skin is damaged or if it has rashes, scratches, or abrasions.

health RIPE LEGS Strawberry legs are a harmless skin condition that doesn’t necessarily cause a person any discomfort. However, some people see it as an aesthetic problem and are always looking for ways to get rid of it.
33
JUNE 2017
HEALTH
Why strawberry legs appear Strawberry legs may appear because of different reasons, and sometimes they may overlap each other. Improper shaving techniques may cause razor burn and lead to ingrown hairs. Sometimes, the skin around the hair follicle may become darker because of the irritation, making strawberry legs more visible. Clogged pores are open comedones that become blocked with bacteria and skin oil. When such pores are exposed to air, they may turn darker. Dry skin doesn’t directly cause strawberry legs, but dryness makes skin more prone to irritation and razor burn. Folliculitis is a skin condition that manifests itself with inflamed hair follicles. It may cause itchiness and the appearance of red bumps. Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition when red bumps or dry patches appear on the skin. They usually don’t itch or cause any discomfort.
How to get rid of strawberry legs Shave correctly. Since the wrong shaving technique is one of the reasons for the appearance of red bumps on the legs, it’s important to remember a few rules on how to avoid this irritation. Use a really sharp razor. If the device you’re using pulls your body hair while shaving, it’s time to replace it. Using dull razors damage the skin, increasing the chance of irritation. Make sure you soften your hair before shaving. Take a warm (not hot) shower to hydrate your skin. Use a moisturizing shaving cream or gel. This product will help your razor blade slide easier. Shave in the direction of hair growth with long and steady strokes. Don’t press the razor blade too hard and rinse it with water after every stroke. Exfoliate your skin properly. Regular exfoliation helps prevent ingrown hairs and reduces the visibility of strawberry legs. It’s better to opt for gentle exfoliators, especially if you already have skin irritation. For example, you can use a washcloth or a loofah. If you want to use a body scrub, go for a gentle one. You can also try products with salicylic acid or glycolic acid. These ingredients act like chemical exfoliators and help reduce the appearance of clogged pores. When you treat your strawberry legs and want to maintain the result, you can try more harsh exfoliating methods, like dry brushing.
Moisturize your skin. Moisturize your legs regularly — especially after shaving them — to replenish the skin’s moisture. It’s better to opt for moisturizers that don’t contain preservatives to avoid any possible side effects, like stinging. Seek professional help. If home remedies don’t work, consult a dermatologist to determine the cause of your skin condition and find the most suitable treatment method. A doctor might suggest different options, including electrolysis and laser therapy, which help remove hair and prevent irritation.

PORTRAIT How to draw a portrait Step 1. Start with simple shapes. Draw a circle with a cross inside of it — the lines should cross in the center of the circle. Step 2. Inside the circle, draw a rectangle, so that the corners are on the circle lines. Step 3. Measure the distance from the center of the circle to the lower line of the rectangle. From the line, measure the same distance down and draw a dot — this is where the chin will end. Now, draw the outline of the chin and cheeks, as the picture above shows. Step 4. Above the horizontal line, you drew on the first step, mark a spot where the eyebrows are going to go. The spot for the eyes will be a bit lower. Step 5. To draw the eyes, measure their width. Divide the distance from one side of the circle to the other into 5 equal sections. After that, draw the eyes and eyebrows left and right from the central line. Step 6. The lower side of the rectangle you drew in the second step shows the spot where the tip of the nose will be. The width may vary, but usually, it’s smaller than the distance of the inside corners of the eyes. Draw the nose. Step 7. Find a spot to draw the mouth: the upper lip should go on the lower edge of the circle. Based on the position of the pupils, draw a proportional mouth. The lower lip is usually fuller than the upper one. Step 8. Draw the ears. Watch the nose tip and the eyebrow line that define the position of the ears. Step 9. Add the hairline. If you are drawing someone with long straight hair that covers the forehead, the hairline won’t be visible, but it’s still better to mark it. It starts on the upper side of the rectangle you drew on your second step.
ARTIST
It seems that it’s impossible to draw well if you are not talented. But the reality is that the basics of drawing can be learned by anyone who is ready to follow simple rules and practice. You can only master something if you practice a lot. So, one of the first and more effective exercises is drawing a portrait.
How to draw eyes The shape and the size of the eyes are different in different people. People’s age also has a big influence on their eyes. For example, in older people, the eyes are hidden under the eyelids, there are visible dark circles under the eyes, and the eyebrows get bushy. Young women have thick eyelashes and thin eyebrows. Step 10. Draw the hair. Pay attention to how it grows: if it’s styled naturally, there’s more volume at the top. Step 11. Now add the neck. To make it look proportional, it’s better to draw it by looking at the horizontal line under the nose tip. Female necks are a bit narrower than male ones.
Draw the pupil considering the light and shadows or the end product will look fake.
How to draw a mouth To draw an attractive mouth, start with sketches of the shapes. The lips are always separated from each other with a clear line. The lower lip is always simple and there’s more detail on the upper lip. Make sure that the middle line between the lips is always lower toward the edges, even if a person is smiling.

CORN ON THE COB We will show you 3 ways to cook it correctly, so you will always have an easy and delicious summer dish that only requires the corn on the cob itself, water, butter, salt, and pepper.
43
JUNE 2017
FOOD
THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO Choose the freshest corn on the cob. Try to buy it from farms or local markets. Purchase the ones that have bright green husks that are tightly wrapped around the cob.
Let’s get started. First, peel the corn and clean everything.
METHOD 2: MICROWAVED 1. Wet a paper towel and wring it out. 2. Wrap the corn in the wet paper towel so it steams as it cooks. 3. Put the corn wrapped in the wet towel inside the microwave and let it cook for 5 minutes.
METHOD 1: BOILED 1. Add a good quantity of salt to a large stockpot. Don’t be afraid to leave the water salty as it will be responsible for all the flavor in the corn. Bring it to a boil. 2. Once the water is boiling, add the previously peeled corn using tongs. 3. Wait for the water to return to a boil and cook the corn for 5 minutes. 4. Using tongs, remove the corn from the boiling water and put it on a platter. 5. Butter the corn on the cob on top. 6. Add a pinch of salt and pepper.
METHOD 3: OVEN-ROASTED 1. Preheat the oven to 375ºF. 2. Put each cob on a piece of aluminum foil. 3. Place butter in the center of each cob. Add salt and pepper. 4. Wrap them. 5. Put them in the oven for about 30 minutes. 6. After 30 minutes, take them out of the oven and let them cool for around 5 minutes before opening them.

OUTER ALIGN
ON THE CENTER
REFLECTION
Place the photos so that the outer edge of the frames makes a big square or a rectangle. This is why it’s called “outer align.”
In order to use this plan, choose 1 or 2 frames to be in the middle, and the photos on the right and on the left should be symmetric.
Place the photos along the horizontal line below and above it to make them look like reflections of each other.
9 SQUARES
SPIRAL
STAIRS
This is a popular plan. Just hang 9 photos in identical frames. The frames should be aligned on the outer edge and be at the same distance from each other. This is good for the home or an office.
Start with the center piece and place the others around it in a spiral. Leave identical gaps between the frames.
Make a staircase of photos...along a staircase.
52
JUNE 2017
LIVING
CLOTHESPINS 1. Take a big frame. 2. Hammer 2 nails on the edges. 3. Put a rope between the nails. 4. Print out your favorite photos and put them on the rope with small clothespins. 5. Hang the frame on the wall. You can easily change the photos if you get tired of them.
COMIC BOOK FRAME 1. Take a wide photo frame. 2. Cut out comic book strips. 3. Use glue to attach the pictures to the frame. 4. Make sure you cover the entire edge of the frame. 5. Place the photo into the frame. This frame will look great on your kid’s desk.
1. Take a square piece of thick cardboard. 2-4. Cut out a frame. 5. Pick a piece of wrapping paper in a color and pattern that you like. The paper should be square-shaped as well but a bit bigger than the frame. It should be enough to cover the edges on all the sides. 6. Place the cardboard frame on the back of the paper. 7. Fold the paper around the frame on each side. Cut out the corners of the wrapping paper as the photo shows. Put some glue on each side of the frame. 8. Attach the wrapping paper to the frame. 9. Use a box cutter to cut the frame and make room for a photo. 10. Put some more glue on the back of the frame. Use a box cutter to get rid of the extra wrapping paper. 11. Put a photo into the frame. 12. Decorate the wall with your new frames.
TYPICAL MISTAKES WE MAKE WHEN HANGING PICTURES AND PHOTOS Placing photos and paintings too high on the wall Photos should be about 145 cm to 150 cm from the floor to the center of the picture. This is a standard distance. It also works if you have several photos or pictures. The group should be treated as one and its center should be 145 cm to 150 cm from the floor. Placing photos too high above furniture The lower part of the frame should be about 10cm to 15 cm from the upper edge of the furniture. This distance allows you to keep some connection between the photo and the furniture. Placing very small photos on big walls If you have a big wall and small photos, hang several photos in a group. Placing several photos too far from each other If you’re hanging several photos on the same wall, treat them as a whole. The distance between each picture should be about 7 cm to 10 cm. Using black and white photos with colored ones on the same wall Colored photos attract more attention, so use black and white photos and colored ones on different walls or even in different rooms. Placing a group of completely different photos on the same wall This could be classic family photos with pets and retro pictures, for example. Think about the story you want to tell with your photos and group them accordingly.
CARDBOARD FRAMES WITH WRAPPING PAPER ON THEM
CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS 1. Take a big frame and flip it so its back is facing you. 2 and 3. Use a glue gun to attach Christmas tree lights to the frame. 4. The lights should have batteries in them. Fix them to the frame too. 5. Use pins to attach the photos to the lights. Be careful not to damage the wires. 6. Hang the frame on the wall.

TIPS & TRICKS
HOW TO CHOOSE A MANGO The fruit of the mango tree is hardly considered “exotic” anymore. They can be found in most grocery stores almost all year round. However, sometimes choosing a good fruit can feel like an impossible task.
APPEARANCE It’s hard to tell precisely what color a ripe mango fruit should be. It can be red, orange, yellow, or even completely green — it all depends on the type of fruit it is. The same thing applies to its shape. Some types of mangos have elongated or oval shapes while other types appear more like circles. Despite differences in color, a mango’s peel must be smooth and even. Scratches, dents, and cracks on the skin are unacceptable. Rot and bacteria can easily get into the fruit through these, which why it’s better to opt for mangos with perfectly smooth skin. An important note: Small black dots on mangos don’t mean that the fruit is damaged. They appear on ripe fruits that are ready to eat. SOFTNESS Ripe mangos are soft and firm at the same time. A shapeless fruit can turn out to be spoiled, while an overly firm one might be unripe. In order to check the ripeness of the fruit, press it slightly with your finger. Ripe fruit will have a small dent left under it. If there’s a very visible and noticeable dent that was left after pressing the fruit, it’s likely that you’re holding an unfresh mango. If you feel that the fruit is too firm, it means it’s not ripe yet. SMELL Ripe mangos always smell good. It can have a slightly fruity or even pine-ish aroma that will be sensed mainly in the area of the stalk. Some ripe fruits may even have juice on the stalk. If the fruit doesn’t have any smell, it’s likely that it hasn’t ripened yet. If a mango has a sour smell, it means the fruit has started to go bad, and you shouldn’t buy it.
WHAT TYPE OF MANGO YOU’D BETTER STAY AWAY FROM If the fruit has a wrinkled surface, it’s likely that it was picked from the tree too early and didn’t have time to ripen. If the fruit extracts lots of juice when you press it, the mango is likely overripe and has started to go bad. If the mango has a lackluster peel and dull coloring, it’s likely that this fruit has started to turn. If the fruit is wet to the touch, don’t buy it. There’s a good chance that there was a spoiled fruit lying next to it, and mold could’ve already penetrated the mango that you picked up. HOW TO HELP MANGOS TO RIPEN If you’ve accidentally bought an unripe mango, there are several ways to help it ripen, fast. In a dark place Put your mango in a storage room or a kitchen cabinet for a couple of days to speed up ripening. Don’t put the fruit into the fridge — it can ripen only in a warm place. In a paper bag Leave the mango in a paper bag for several days. The fruit will intensively release ethylene in such conditions, thus helping itself to ripen. In a bag with bananas Place some mango in one bag with 2-3 yellow bananas and leave the fruit at room temperature for 2-4 days. The fruit will release ethylene that will help it to ripen. In rice Place mango in dry fresh rice, which will speed up the release of ethylene in the fruit. Therefore, the fruit will ripen faster. An important note: make sure to check the mango while it’s ripening. It can overripen quite fast and start to go bad.
