EDITOR'S NOTE

Speaking About Summer I

’m pretty sure I was born a summer person. In fact, I’m certain I was, because my birthday coincides with the summer solstice. Throughout my childhood, June delivered any kid’s dream: school year over, swimming pools open, and a birthday party on the longest day of the year. Even now, I think of June as a call to play. It’s a month for outdoor concerts, local festivals, and backyard fun. 5-Minute Crafts ® readers are all in, as we learned when we asked on Facebook about your favorite warm-weather parties. Easy barbecues and cookouts are staples, but you like to think bigger, too. You love bonfires and backyard campouts; neighborhood game fests; corn roasts, Cajun feasts, and lobster bakes. Just to name a few.

JUNE 2019

HOME Use the room's corners creatively

An ordinary corner can perfectly fit a sofa, a wardrobe, and a number of boxes. This layout is comfortable for both homework and play. The corners help make the room spacious and allow for modern designs.

Three-inone: A bed, book shelves and a workspace This design means everything's close at hand, and there's still room to spare!

A chalkboard wall is the perfect tool for stimulating your child's creativity

Boxes mean there's space for every single toy They can help you make a room stylish while keeping the mess to a minimum. Using plastic baskets as shelves is another smart idea. Even old skateboards can be useful!

Plus you no longer have to worry about them ruining the wallpaper!

Wall pockets can be used to store anything

They're perfect for all kinds of toys. You can even get bedside pockets! They also mean your kids will have a clear work desk.

26

JUNE 2019

HOME Focus on books

Using plastic baskets, your child can have both a comfortable sofa and a whole library all in their own room. These 'book trees' look great and can save a lot of space.

Find a way to store their shoes effectively You can use an over-the-door pocket shoe organizer. There is a lot of empty space under their beds as well! Have you noticed? In this case, each pair of shoes has its very own tube, meaning they don't spend hours searching through that messy pile for the ones they want. You can make this wooden shoe rack in 5 minutes. Now you have a multi-story rack for all of their shoes!

Adopt the 'Tetris strategy' for your kid's wardrobe

Fitting several beds into a room for siblings This one will fit two kids. This bed is designed for three. And this super-bed will fit the whole family!

It's both a table and a wardrobe! Who told you that a wardrobe has to be vertical and touch the ceiling... Clear plastic storage boxes really are the best! There's a separate mini section for each item of clothing.

Use the floor as a play area

A carpet can turn into a racetrack in an instant.

SWEEP CLEAN

Today, there are so many different vacuum cleaner models that it’s really hard to make a choice because you have to consider so many different things. For example, people that have small apartments with simple designs might like vacuum cleaning robots, and those who have pets might like a washer. Or maybe you need a simple and not-so-expensive vertical vacuum that looks more like a mop.

30

JUNE 2019

HOME Types of vacuums

Modern canister vacuum cleaners can be pretty light and easy to move, and they are good at different tasks thanks to a flexible hose, long tubes, and different attachments. Such vacuums are good for different types of dirt and surfaces, can work with pet fur, and are also great for carpets, curtains, walls, furniture, and hard-to-reach spaces. They are great for medium and big apartments, but thanks to the power of the big engine, they are not very energy-efficient. It’s hard to find enough space to store such vacuums in smaller apartments. Classic vertical vacuums have elongated bodies that go along the pipe. In most situations, they are easier to store because they’re small. Most models are good for carpets. They might have a motorhead, which is great for collecting trash, including hair and fur. But it’s difficult to use them to clean under the bed unless you have some special attachments. Such models can’t be lifted to clean anything vertical. There are some models that have a small engine, and the duster is above the handle. When the pipe is disconnected, they turn into handheld devices and are great for collecting dust and dirt in hard-toreach spots. The power of such a vacuum is not that high, but it’s much more energy-efficient. Handheld vacuums are usually bought for cleaning cars, but they can be great for small apartments when you need just a bit of cleaning. They’re small and light, have batteries, and don’t need a lot of space for storage. But on the other hand, if you need to do a major clean, they’re not reliable. Depending on the model, robot vacuums can clean the dust and carpets and even wash the floor, killing bacteria with UV light and detergent. Thanks to the sensors, they can see objects around themselves, avoid them, and even cross some small obstacles. They have batteries, so they might go to the charging station and then continue cleaning. On the other hand, if there’s a lot of furniture legs around or cables and other stuff, such vacuums will have a hard time cleaning without your constant supervision.

Types of cleaning

Most vacuums are made to collect dust and small trash. And the filters inside clear the air and let it back out. There are models that can also wash the floor. Such vacuums are more expensive, but they are a better choice when you need to do a lot of cleaning in a big space, especially with kids or pets in it. But remember, before you buy such a model, find out of it’s recommended to wash laminate floors with it.

Types of filters for clearing the air

Most vacuums have a duster inside them. It may be disposable (made of paper or synthetic material) or reusable (made of fabric). A good duster has a high level of filtration, and when you take it out, the dust should remain inside. Some dusters are covered in an anti-bacterial solution. You should also know that some vacuum models can only have specific dusters from a certain brand. So it’s better to buy the models that can go with any duster. Cyclone filters are used in vacuums designed for cleaning without water. The air that gets inside is cleared and it goes around so that dust and dirt that gets in stays on the walls of the container. The dirt goes into the trash bin and the container can be cleaned with a wet cloth, depending on the recommendations from the manufacturer. The filters can be washed. Water filters are used not only in the vacuums that can wash. It’s designed like this: The air gets into a container with water where all the dust and dirt remains. The air comes out clean and humidified. Some models can even ionize the air. But after each use, such a filter has to be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Important: With washing vacuums, the filtration system is different. During cleaning, the water gets from the container and onto the surface, and then the vacuum sucks it back along with the dust. After cleaning, you just need to remove the dirty water. You can clean carpets, furniture, and even wash windows.

It’s also important to note how a robot vacuum moves: cheaper models go around the space in a chaotic order, which makes the cleaning less effective. So it’s better to buy the models that create a map of the space, calculate the optimal itinerary, and then move accordingly. Even if this robot has to go to the charging station, at least a part of the room will be clean.

34

JUNE 2019

Coarse air filters

They are necessary to protect the engine of the vacuum. Without them, dust and dirt might get into the engine and make the power lower. Such filters are usually made of foam or microfiber and placed between the duster and the engine. Depending on the model, it should be changed about once a year.

Fine air filters

They clear the air before letting it back out. Many models have HEPA filters that can retain the smallest dust particles together with viruses and bacteria. The better the class of the filter (from E10 to U17), the more effective it is. Most filters like these are disposable and should be replaced about every 1-2 years. But there are also models you can use several times after you wash them with water and dry at room temperature.

What type of vacuum you need if you suffer from allergies Buy a model with good sucking power, as they can collect all the dust, dirt, and hair from any surface, including carpets with long fibers. The duster is supposed to keep the dust and dirt safely inside to minimize contact with allergens. It can be a disposable paper duster or a water filter because, if you use a cyclone-filter vacuum, you might have to breathe in air filled with allergens when cleaning it. You should at least use an H14 HEPA filter. Such filters can collect and hold the smallest allergens. The coarse filter should have an anti-bacterial cover that can kill the microorganisms in the air.

LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, happens when your blood pressure is higher than normal. This can result in serious conditions, such as heart disease.

41

JUNE 2019

HEALTH Cut back on sugar.

Restricting the quantity of sugar you eat can help you lose weight and lower your blood pressure. Sugar can increase your chances of getting heart disease.

Reduce your sodium intake.

Large quantities of sodium can increase your blood pressure. Controling your intake will not only lower your blood pressure, but it will also prevent it from rising in the first place. Reduce the quantity of salt you use and stay away from salty nuts or meats rich in sodium, like ham, bacon, and even salmon.

Drink some lowcalorie cranberry juice.

Low-calorie cranberry juice such as POM Wonderful is a good ally when it comes to treating cardiovascular disease. It can improve circulation and insulin resistance as well as prevent diabetes.

Eat some dark chocolate.

Studies show that dark chocolate and other cocoa-rich products are an interesting way to reduce blood pressure as they may help dilate blood vessels.

Increase your potassium intake.

Potassium can help lower the effect salt has on your system and can ease the tension in your blood vessels. The best sources of potassium are fruits and vegetables, like bananas, oranges, grapefruit, cooked broccoli, cooked spinach, and pumpkin.

Exercise regularly.

Exercising for around 30 minutes most days a week can lower your blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mm Hg. Try to be as consistent as possible with your exercise or your blood pressure may rise again.

LEARN NOBEL TOPICS When we want to learn about a topic that’s completely new to us, uncertainty may arise about how to do it quickly and effectively. Whether it’s to learn more about a certain subject or put together a presentation, there’s a helpful technique to efficiently learn about any given topic. This will share the Feynman method with you, created by a physicist and Nobel Prize winner named Richard Feynman, that can transform learning into a simple and systematized process.

46

JUNE 2019

1. Pick a subject and write it down. Write the name of the chosen concept or theme (like Greek mythology) at the top of a sheet of paper. If the subject is still a bit unfamiliar to you, proceed to study it in the way you usually would. If, on the other hand, you already know something about it, write everything you know as a “brainstorming” session or in short sentences (no need to delve into them).

2. Explain the subject. Write an explanation of the subject on this page. Try to use simple language, as if you were making a short presentation in front of a class: no reason to beat around the bush. Imagine an invisible student listening carefully to you. This process will help you highlight what you do and don’t understand. Because if you only read information, you can come to believe that you have memorized all of it; but it’s only when you try to explain it that you discover where your knowledge is insufficient.

3. Go back to what you don’t understand. If you detected gaps in your knowledge, such as facts you missed or processes you couldn’t explain, it’s time to actually learn. Go back to your sources and review the data that wasn’t clear to you the first time. The purpose of this step is to repeat things as much as possible. Imagine a hole that you must fill with information. By doing a second and third check, you’ll make that hole smaller and eventually cover it.

4. Re-write and simplify. Review your notes and read them out loud. If the explanation is not straightforward and demands time to clarify, you’re probably not understanding something. Try to make analogies, as you would if you had to explain it to a child. This will not only make you understand it better but dominate the subject as well. Feynman said, “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.” Think of a little boy asking “why” about everything. We can’t just explain something to him with facts and expect the boy to accept it just because. By assuming that the information must be clear enough to be understood by a child, you will realize the subtle difference between knowing and understanding.

TIPS & TRICKS

How to Open a Can Without a Can Opener

This has happened to a lot of us: we really want to eat our canned food and we can’t find or don’t have access to a can opener and we don’t know what to do.

METHOD 1: SPOON 1. Put gloves on your hands. 2. Hold the spoon in your hand. Make sure that you can control the spoon with your thumb and that the spoon is facing the center of the can. 3. Rub one of the edges of the can vigorously back and forth until you break through the metal. 4. Put the spoon in the hole you just created and go around the can. 5. Leave a little bit of the top of the can and you can now lift the lid.

METHOD 2: CONCRETE OR ROCK 1. Flip the can over, so the top part is facing the concrete or rock. 2. Rub the can along the concrete or rock. 3. After some time the can will start to depress and you can just press the lid and it will open. 4. Alternatively, you could also squeeze the can with your hands until the lid pops out.
